There are five games on tonight in the hockey world.
Leading off, the Boston Bruins host the Ottawa Senators. Craig Anderson and Tim Thomas will play goal. Ottawa struck first with a Nick Foligno goal, his third of the season, courtesy of Stephane Da Costa and Bobby Butler. Boston replied with Milan Lucic netting a power play goal, his fourth of the year, powered by Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg. Da Costa put the Senators back ahead with his third of the season, coming off of Foligno and Chris Neil. The Bruins retied it in the second period with Patrice Bergeron notching his third of the year, thanks to Tyler Seguin and Brad Marchand. Boston took the lead with Chris Kelly sinking his third of the season, with helpers provided by Rich Peverley and Chara. Ottawa retied the game in the third period on a Jared Cowen goal from Neil and Foligno. The Bruins gained the lead back with a Johnny Boychuk goal, via Kelly and Jordan Caron. Boston made it 5-3 on a Daniel Paille goal, his second of the year from Shawn Thornton and Gregory Campbell. This was the final, and the three stars went to Peverley, Bergeron, and Foligno, although better choices could be Da Costa, Neil, Kelly, or Chara.
Down to Raleigh, where the Carolina Hurricanes host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Dwayne Roloson and Cam Ward put on the masks. Tampa Bay opened the scoring with a Teddy Purcell goal, his fourth of the season, fueled by Marc Andre Bergeron and Ryan Malone. Carolina tied it on a Chad LaRose goal, his second of the year, a power play goal, courtesy of Jay Harrison and Alexei Ponikarovsky. The Hurricanes made it 3-1 with a pair of goals from Jeff Skinner, his fifth and sixth of the campaign, with only two assists being awarded, going to Joni Pitkanen and Jussi Jokinen. The Lightning got one back in the third period with Brett Connolly's goal, thanks to Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier. Carolina made it 4-2 with another LaRose goal, his second of the game and third of the season, with Jiri Tlusty picking up the lone assist. The final was 4-2, and Skinner, LaRose, and Ward (28 for 30 in saves) were the three stars.
Moving northwest to Detroit, where the Red Wings welcomed the Minnesota Wild. Josh Harding opposed Jimmy Howard in front of the cages. Nicklas Lidstrom gave Detroit an early lead with his third of the season, via Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. Minnesota tied it late in the third period with Mikko Koivu's goal coming off of Justin Falk and Devin Setoguchi. The tie was broken by Setoguchi in overtime, on his fourth of the year, a power play goal made possible by Koivu and Pierre-Marc Bouchard, for a 2-1 Wild win. The three stars were Setoguchi, Harding (36 for 37 in saves), and Datsyuk, with honorable mention to Lidstrom and Koivu.
Moving back toward the east, the Washington Capitals host the traveling Anaheim Ducks. Jonas Hiller and Tomas Vokoun play in the blue paint. Saku Koivu led off the scoring for Anaheim, and was assisted by Teemu Selanne and Cam Fowler. Selanne extended the Ducks lead with his fourth of the season, courtesy of Koivu and Toni Lydman. Selanne added on in the second period for Anaheim with his second of the game and fifth of the year, via Fowler and Francois Beauchemin. Washington got on the board with Joel Ward netting his third of the season, thanks to Brooks Laich and Jason Chimera. The Capitals cut the deficit with a Dennis Wideman goal, his third of the year, with helpers by Laich and Ward. The Ducks made it 4-2 with a Corey Perry power play goal, his fifth of the season, powered by Fowler and Selanne, the former finishing a sock trick. Washington got it back as Troy Brouwer registered his second of the year, with the assistance of John Erskine and Wideman. The Capitals tied it late on a Nicklas Backstrom goal, his third of the season, guided in by Chimera and Laich, the latter wrapping up a sock trick. Backstrom gave Washington the win in overtime on his second of the game and fourth of the year, with helpers from Jeff Schultz and Alex Ovechkin for a 5-4 win. The three stars were Backstrom, Selanne, and Laich, with honorable mention to Ward, Wideman, Chimera, Koivu, and Fowler.
Wrapping the day up in Alberta, with the Calgary Flames hosting the Vancouver Canucks. Roberto Luongo and Miikka Kiprusoff play between the pipes tonight. Vancouver struck first with a Chris Higgins goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Jannik Hansen and Manny Malhotra. The Canucks added on with a power play goal by Alexandre Burrows, his fourth of the year powered by Ryan Kesler and Alexander Edler. Vancouver kept it coming with Daniel Sedin notching his fifth of the season with the man advantage, courtesy of Henrik Sedin's tenth assist and Edler. The Canucks kept rolling in the second period on Cody Hodgson's third of the year, made possible by Maxim Lapierre and Dale Weise. Edler added on for Vancouver with his third of the season, and Hodgson and David Booth tallied assists to make it 5-0. Calgary avoided the shutout in the last minute as Alex Tanguay sank his second of the year, with the help of Tom Kostopoulos and Chris Butler for a 5-1 final. The three stars were Edler, Luongo (28 for 29 in saves), and Higgins, with honorable mention to Hodgson.
