NHL 2022-23 - Day 47

A calm Saturday features eight games. First up...

The New York Rangers host the Edmonton Oilers. Jack Campbell and Igor Shesterkin protect the nets. New York led off in the first period with an Alexis Lafreniere goal, his third of the season, made possible by Adam Fox and Ryan Lindgren. The Rangers added on in the second period with a Chris Kreider goal, his tenth of the year, courtesy of Lindgren and Artemi Panarin. New York extended the lead as Julien Gauthier scored his fourth of the season, thanks to Ryan Carpenter and Sammy Blais. Edmonton got on the board in the third period with an Evan Bouchard goal, assisted by Jesse Puljujarvi and Ryan McLeod. The Oilers got closer with another Bouchard goal, via Warren Foegele and McLeod. Edmonton tied it on a Dylan Holloway goal, passed from McLeod. The Oilers gained the lead on a Leon Draisaitl power play goal, his twelfth of the year, powered by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Connor McDavid. The final stood from here at 4-3, with the three stars given to Bouchard, McLeod, and Lindgren. 

Down in Raleigh, the Carolina Hurricanes welcome the Calgary Flames. Dan Vladar and Antti Raanta man the nets. Carolina began in the first period with a Seth Jarvis goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Brent Burns. Calgary tied it on an Adam Ruzicka power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Michael Stone and Noah Hanifin. The Hurricanes retook the lead with a Martin Necas power play goal, his tenth of the season, with assists provided by Stefan Noesen and Andrei Svechnikov. The Flames tied it again with a Tyler Toffoli goal, his seventh of the year, guided in by Jonathan Huberdeau and Mikael Backlund. Carolina pulled ahead in the third period with a Brett Pesce power play goal, helped along by Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Paul Stastny. The final held at 3-2, with the three stars going to Pesce, Necas, and Jarvis.

Further south, the Florida Panthers host the St. Louis Blues. Thomas Greiss and Spencer Knight start in goal. Florida opened in the first period with an Aaron Ekblad goal, his fourth of the season, via Eetu Luostarinen and Gustav Forsling. The Panthers added on with a Radko Gudas goal, his second of the year, going in unassisted. Florida extended the lead as Carter Verhaeghe scored his twelfth of the season, thanks to Sam Reinhart. St. Louis got on the board with a Brandon Saad goal, his fourth of the year, courtesy of Josh Leivo and Ryan O'Reilly. The Panthers shot back in the second period with an Anton Lundell goal, his third of the season, made possible by Reinhart and Forsling. The Blues got one back in the third period with an O'Reilly goal, his third of the year, helped along by Calle Rosen and Saad. St. Louis got closer with a Jordan Kyrou goal, his eighth of the season, coming off of Justin Faulk and Torey Krug. The Blues tied it on a Vladimir Tarasenko goal, his fifth of the year, with helpers from Ivan Barbashev and Pavel Buchnevich. St. Louis won 5-4 in overtime with another Kyrou goal, his second of the game and ninth of the campaign, passed from Krug. The three stars were Kyrou, O'Reilly, and Saad, while Krug, Reinhart, and Forsling get the honorable mentions.

Back north, the New Jersey Devils bring in the Washington Capitals. Charlie Lindgren and Vitek Vanecek are set to start in goal. New Jersey struck first in the first period with a Nico Hischier power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Dawson Mercer and Dougie Hamilton. The Devils added on with a Jack Hughes goal in the second period, his ninth of the year, going in unassisted. New Jersey extended the lead as Hughes scored his second of the game and tenth of the season, thanks to Ryan Graves and Mercer. The Devils padded the lead in the third period on a Hughes goal, completing his hat trick on his eleventh of the year, courtesy of Erik Haula. Washington got on the board with a John Carlson power play goal, his sixth of the season, with assists provided by Dylan Strome and Marcus Johansson. New Jersey fired back on a Fabian Zetterlund goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Michael McLeod and Jonas Siegenthaler. The final held at 5-1, with the three stars going to Hughes, Mercer, and Vanecek (38 for 39 in saves).

To Pittsburgh, as the Penguins host the Toronto Maple Leafs. Erik Kallgren and Casey DeSmith are the backups in goal. Toronto started in the first period with a Mitchell Marner goal, his sixth of the season, courtesy of Auston Matthews and Calle Jarnkrok. The Maple Leafs added on in the second period with a Pontus Holmberg goal, his second of the year, guided in by Marner. Toronto extended the lead as William Nylander scored his twelfth of the season, with the help of Matthews and Michael Bunting. Pittsburgh got on the board in the third period with a Rickard Rakell goal, his ninth of the year, via Jake Guentzel and Sidney Crosby. The Maple Leafs shot back with a Matthews goal, his tenth of the season, coming off of Bunting and Nylander. The final stood at 4-1, with the three stars going to Matthews, Marner, and Bunting, while Nylander gets an honorable mention.

East to New York, as the Islanders welcome the Philadelphia Flyers. Felix Sandstrom and Semyon Varlamov are between the pipes. New York kicked off the scoring in the first period with an Adam Pelech goal, his third of the season, assisted by Anthony Beauvillier. Philadelphia tied it on a Lukas Sedlak goal, his second of the year, fueled by Kevin Hayes and Ivan Provorov. The Flyers took the lead in the second period with a Joel Farabee goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Hayes and Sedlak. The Islanders tied it with a Zach Parise power play goal, his sixth of the year, powered by Ryan Pulock. New York took the lead with a Brock Nelson goal, his eleventh of the season, made possible by Pulock. The Islanders added on with a Beauvillier goal, his fifth of the year, courtesy of Pulock. New York extended the lead as Parise scored his second of the game and seventh of the season on the power play, thanks to Josh Bailey and Pulock. The final stood at 5-2, with the three stars being Pulock, Parise, and Beauvillier, while Sedlak and Hayes get the honorable mentions.

Out west, the Colorado Avalanche host the Dallas Stars. Scott Wedgewood and Alexandar Georgiev are in the blue paint. Colorado was first to score in the first period with a Nathan MacKinnon power play goal, his sixth of the season, going in unassisted. The Avalanche added on with a Josh Manson goal, his second of the year, coming off of Mikko Rantanen and Artturi Lehkonen. Dallas answered in the second period with a Joe Pavelski power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Miro Heiskanen and Jason Robertson. Colorado fired back with a Dryden Hunt goal, his second of the year, made possible by Alex Newhook and Martin Kaut. The Avalanche extended the lead in the third period as Andrew Cogliano scored his third of the season, via Logan O'Connor and Manson. The final held at 4-1 with the three stars being Manson, Georgiev (41 for 42 in saves), and Hunt.

Finally, the Vegas Golden Knights bring in the Vancouver Canucks. Spencer Martin and Logan Thompson draw the starts in goal. Vancouver drew first blood in the first period with a Brock Boeser power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Conor Garland. The Canucks added on with a J.T. Miller power play goal, his eleventh of the year, with assists provided by Quinn Hughes and Andrei Kuzmenko. Vancouver extended the lead in the second period as Elias Pettersson scored his eleventh of the season, thanks to Bo Horvat and Miller. The Canucks padded the lead on a Kuzmenko goal, his ninth of the year, via Nils Aman and Dakota Joshua. Vancouver continued with a Horvat goal, his seventeenth of the season, passed from Miller and Nils Hoglander. Vegas got one back with a Jonathan Marchessault goal, his eighth of the year, courtesy of Reilly Smith and Shea Theodore. NHL 2022-23 - Day 46

After the Thanksgiving break, Friday rolls with 13 games. First up...

The Boston Bruins host the Carolina Hurricanes. Pyotr Kochetkov and Linus Ullmark are the goalies. Carolina led off in the first period with a Stefan Noesen power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov. The Hurricanes added on with a Jesperi Kotkaniemi power play goal, his second of the year, with assists provided by Seth Jarvis and Brett Pesce. Boston got on the board with a David Krejci goal, in the second period, his seventh of the season, via David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha. Jeremy Swayman replaced an injured Ullmark in the third period. The Bruins tied it in the third period with another Krejci goal, his second of the game and eighth of the year, guided in by Zacha and Nick Foligno. Boston won 3-2 in overtime with a Pastrnak goal, his fourteenth of the campaign, fueled by Brad Marchand on the power play. The three stars were Pastrnak, Krejci, and Zacha.

Down in DC, the Washington Capitals welcome the Calgary Flames. Jacob Markstrom and Darcy Kuemper tend the twines. Washington began in the first period with a T.J. Oshie goal, his third of the season, coming off of Erik Gustafsson and Alex Ovechkin. The Capitals added on in the second period with an Evgeny Kuznetsov goal, his third of the year, via Oshie and Sonny Milano. Washington extended the lead in the third period as Ovechkin scored his eleventh of the season on the power play, thanks to Conor Sheary and Milano. The final held at 3-0, with the three stars awarded to Kuemper (32 save shutout), Oshie, and Ovechkin, while Milano gets an honorable mention.

Out west, the Chicago Blackhawks bring in the Montreal Canadiens. Sam Montembeault and Arvid Soderblom are the backups in goal. Montreal opened in the first period with a Joel Edmundson goal, via Sean Monahan. Chicago tied it in the second period with a Caleb Jones goal, assisted by Jason Dickinson and Jujhar Khaira. The Canadiens retook the lead with a Nick Suzuki power play goal, his twelfth of the season, powered by Mike Matheson and Monahan. The Blackhawks tied it in the third period with a Taylor Raddysh power play goal, his fifth of the year, with assists provided by Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. The tie went to a shootout, where Cole Caufield, Suzuki, and Kirby Dach lifted the Canadiens to a 3-2 win over Toews, Andreas Athanasiou, and the Blackhawks. The three stars were Monahan, Suzuki, and Toews.

To Minnesota, as the Wild host the Toronto Maple Leafs. Matt Murray and Marc-Andre Fleury man the nets. Toronto started in the first period with a Mitchell Marner goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Timothy Liljegren and John Tavares. Minnesota tied it on a Kirill Kaprizov power play goal, his twelfth of the year, powered by Joel Eriksson Ek and Mats Zuccarello. The Maple Leafs took the lead back on a Zach Aston-Reese goal, his third of the season, via Pierre Engvall. The Wild tied it in the second period with a Matt Boldy goal, his eighth of the year, passed from Alex Goligoski and Jordan Greenway. Toronto retook the lead with a Calle Jarnkrok goal, his fifth of the season, made possible by Mark Giordano and Tavares. The Maple Leafs added on in the third period with a William Nylander goal, his twelfth of the year, helped along by Michael Bunting and Victor Mete. Minnesota got one back with a Zuccarello goal, his seventh of the season, with helpers from Kaprizov and Goligoski. This only made it 4-3, the final, with the three stars being Kaprizov, Zuccarello, and Tavares, while Goligoski gets an honorable mention.

Next up, the Anaheim Ducks welcome the Ottawa Senators. Cam Talbot and Anthony Stolarz draw the starts in goal. Ottawa struck first in the first period with a Brady Tkachuk power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Drake Batherson and Thomas Chabot. The Senators added on with a Derick Brassard goal, his third of the year, guided in by Mathieu Joseph and Jake Sanderson. Ottawa extended the lead in the second period as Tim Stutzle scored his eighth of the season on the power play, thanks to Alex DeBrincat and Batherson. The Senators padded the lead on an Artem Zub goal, his second of the year, made possible by Brassard and Joseph. Ottawa continued in the third period with a Joseph power play goal, his second of the season, with assists provided by Brassard and Shane Pinto. Philadelphia got on the board in the third period with a Kevin Hayes goal, his sixth of the season, guided in by Nicolas Deslauriers and Travis Sanheim. The final stood at 4-1, with the three stars going to Poehling, Blueger, and Archibald.

In Buffalo, the Sabres host the New Jersey Devils. Akira Schmid and Craig Anderson get the starting nods in goal. New Jersey got going in the second period with a Jack Hughes goal, his eighth of the season, via Dawson Mercer and Erik Haula. The Devils added on with a Jesper Boqvist goal, his third of the year, guided in by Yegor Sharangovich. Buffalo got on the board with a Victor Olofsson goal, his eleventh of the season, passed from Casey Mittelstadt and Henri Jokiharju. New Jersey replied with a Tomas Tatar goal, his fifth of the year, fueled by Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt. Westward to Detroit, as the Red Wings welcome the Arizona Coyotes. Karel Vejmelka and Ville Husso are in the creases. The Red Wings added on in the second period with a Hronek power play goal, his sixth of the year, with assists provided by Jonatan Berggren and Tyler Bertuzzi. Arizona got on the board with a Nick Schmaltz goal, his second of the season, passed from Jakob Chychrun. Detroit fired back on a Jordan Oesterle goal, coming off of Bertuzzi and Raymond. The Coyotes pulled one back with a J.J. Moser goal, his second of the year, guided in by Clayton Keller and Schmaltz. Arizona tied it in the third period with a Chychrun goal, fueled by Shayne Gostisbehere and Schmaltz. The tie went to a shootout, where Dylan Larkin's lone tally gave the Red Wings a 4-3 win. Tampa Bay extended the lead as Point scored his second of the game and eighth of the season on the power play, thanks to Kucherov and Mikhail Sergachev. St. Louis got on the board with a Pavel Buchnevich power play goal, his sixth of the year, powered by Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou. The Blues got one back in the second period with a Kyrou goal, his seventh of the season, assisted by Thomas and Buchnevich. The Lightning replied with a Hagel goal, his sixth of the year, passed from Kucherov and Point. Columbus got on the board with a Yegor Chinakhov power play goal, his fourth of the season, with assists provided by Johnny Gaudreau and Kent Johnson. Dallas tied it on a Wyatt Johnston goal, his fifth of the year, made possible by Jamie Benn and Ty Dellandrea. The Jets retook the lead with a Jansen Harkins goal, coming off of Adam Lowry and Brenden Dillon. The Stars tied it again with a Jamie Benn power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen. Winnipeg regained the lead in the second period with a Lowry goal, his fourth of the year, courtesy of Axel Jonsson-Fjallby and Dylan DeMelo. The Jets added on in the third period with a Kyle Connor goal, his seventh of the season, fueled by Pierre-Luc Dubois and DeMelo. Dallas got one back with a Robertson goal, his seventeenth of the year, assisted by Heiskanen and Tyler Seguin. The Stars tied it on a Robertson goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the season, with helpers from Seguin and Joe Pavelski. Finally, the San Jose Sharks host the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Quick and James Reimer are the veterans in goal. Los Angeles began in the first period with a Jaret Anderson-Dolan goal, made possible by Blake Lizotte and Drew Doughty. San Jose tied it on a Kevin Labanc goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl. The Kings retook the lead with a Phillip Danault power play goal, his seventh of the year, powered by Viktor Arvidsson and Sean Durzi. Los Angeles added on in the second period with an Arvidsson goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Kevin Fiala and Durzi. The Sharks got one back with an Alexander Barabanov goal, his third of the year, going in unassisted. The Kings answered in the third period with a Rasmus Kupari goal, his second of the season, passed from Anderson-Dolan and Arthur Kaliyev. Buffalo led off in the first period with a Jeff Skinner goal, his eighth of the season, via Alex Tuch. St. Louis tied it in the second period with a Pavel Buchnevich power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas. The Sabres took the lead back with a Dylan Cozens goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Vinnie Hinostroza and JJ Peterka. Buffalo added on with a Victor Olofsson power play goal, his tenth of the year, assisted by Owen Power and Casey Mittelstadt. The Sabres extended the lead as Skinner scored his second of the game and ninth of the season on the power play, thanks to Tuch. Buffalo padded the lead on a Jack Quinn goal, his second of the year, going in unassisted. The Sabres continued with another Quinn goal, his second of the game and third of the season, an unassisted tally. The Blues got one back with a Brayden Schenn goal, his sixth of the year, helped along by Noel Acciari and Ivan Barbashev. The final was 6-2, and the three stars were Skinner, Quinn, and Tuch.

Columbus cracked the scoresheet in the third period with a Mathieu Olivier goal, his second of the season, going in unassisted. Montreal tied it on an Arber Xhekaj goal, his third of the year, coming off of Jake Evans and Juraj Slafkovsky. The Canadiens took the lead with a David Savard goal, via Kirby Dach and Cole Caufield. The Wild added on in the second period with a Calen Addison goal, via Jon Merrill and Matt Boldy. Minnesota extended the lead as Marcus Foligno scored his second of the year, thanks to Dumba and Joel Eriksson Ek. Winnipeg got on the board with a Kyle Connor goal, his sixth of the season, fueled by Josh Morrissey and Michael Eyssimont. The Wild shot back on a Kirill Kaprizov power play goal in the third period, his eleventh of the year, powered by Mats Zuccarello and Boldy. Minnesota padded the lead on Foligno's second goal of the game and third of the season, helped along by Eriksson Ek. Backtracking to Detroit, as the Red Wings welcome the Nashville Predators. Kevin Lankinen and Ville Husso are the Finnish goalies. The Red Wings added on with a power play goal by Filip Hronek, his fifth of the year, powered by Jonatan Berggren. East to New York, as the Islanders bring in the Edmonton Oilers. Jack Campbell and Ilya Sorokin are the masked men. New York dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Jean-Gabriel Pageau shorthanded goal, his fourth of the season, set up by Zach Parise and Adam Pelech. The Islanders added on with a Pageau power play goal, his second of the game and fifth of the year, powered by Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee. New York extended the lead as Sebastian Aho scored his second of the season, thanks to Oliver Wahlstrom and Casey Cizikas. The final held from here at 3-0, with the three stars awarded to Sorokin (49 save shutout), Pageau, and Aho.

In DC, the Washington Capitals host the Philadelphia Flyers. Felix Sandstrom and Darcy Kuemper draw the starts in goal. Philadelphia was first to score in the first period with a Morgan Frost goal, his third of the season, courtesy of Travis Sanheim and Joel Farabee. Washington tied it on a Marcus Johansson power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie. The Flyers retook the lead in the second period with a Patrick Brown goal, via Ivan Provorov and Nicolas Deslauriers. The Capitals tied it in the third period with a Sonny Milano goal, his third of the season, assisted by Evgeny Kuznetsov and Oshie. Southwest to Dallas, where the Stars welcome the Chicago Blackhawks. Petr Mrazek and Jake Oettinger are between the pipes. Chicago tied it in the second period with a Seth Jones goal, via Patrick Kane and Jack Johnson. The Blackhawks took the lead with an Andreas Athanasiou goal, his sixth of the year, passed from Max Domi and Caleb Jones. Chicago added on with a Connor Murphy goal, his second of the season, helped along by Jonathan Toews and Jarred Tinordi. The Blackhawks extended the lead in the third period as Domi scored his fifth of the year, thanks to Colin Blackwell and Jake McCabe. The Stars got one back on a Jamie Benn power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Roope Hintz and Joe Pavelski. Dallas got closer with a Mason Marchment goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Tyler Seguin and Denis Gurianov. Anaheim added on with a Troy Terry goal, his eighth of the year, passed from Trevor Zegras. The Rangers got one back with a Braden Schneider goal, his second of the season, with helpers from Mika Zibanejad and Artemi Panarin. Finally, the Seattle Kraken bring in the San Jose Sharks. Kaapo Kahkonen and Martin Jones play in goal. Buffalo kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Rasmus Dahlin goal, his eighth of the season, coming off of Tage Thompson and Jeff Skinner. The Sabres added on with a J.J. Peterka goal, his fourth of the year, via Dylan Cozens and Jack Quinn. Buffalo extended the lead on an Alex Tuch power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Dahlin and Skinner. Montreal got on the board with a Cole Caufield goal, his twelfth of the year, assisted by Kaiden Guhle and David Savard. The Sabres fired back in the second period with a Skinner goal, his sixth of the season, passed from Thompson and Tuch. The Philadelphia Flyers host the Calgary Flames. Jacob Markstrom and Carter Hart protect the nets. Calgary began in the first period with a Jonathan Huberdeau goal, his third of the season, via Blake Coleman. The Flames added on with a Dillon Dube goal, his second of the year, assisted by Coleman and MacKenzie Weegar. Philadelphia got on the board with a Tanner Laczynski goal, passed from Kevin Hayes and Noah Cates. Calgary shot back in the second period with a Rasmus Andersson goal, his second of the season, guided in by Noah Hanifin and Andrew Mangiapane. The Flyers got one back in the third period with a Joel Farabee goal, his fourth of the year, going in unassisted. The Flames fired back on a Coleman empty net unassisted goal, his third of the season. The Islanders tied it in the third period with a Josh Bailey goal, his fourth of the year, going in unassisted. New York won 3-2 in overtime with an Anthony Beauvillier goal, his fourth of the campaign, passed from Brock Nelson and Dobson. The three stars were Dobson, Beauvillier, and Bailey. 

Over in Winnipeg, the Jets welcome the Carolina Hurricanes. Pyotr Kochetkov and David Rittich are in the blue paint. The Jets added on in the second period with a Michael Eyssimont goal, made possible by David Gustafsson and Jansen Harkins. Winnipeg extended the lead in the third period as Josh Morrissey scored his second of the year, thanks to Wheeler and Dubois. Carolina got on the board with a Jaccob Slavin goal, courtesy of Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho. The Hurricanes got closer with a Svechnikov goal, his thirteenth of the season, fueled by Brent Burns and Aho. Carolina tied it as Martin Necas scored his ninth of the year, with the help of Seth Jarvis and Aho. The Jets won 4-3 in overtime with another Morrissey goal, his second of the game and third of the campaign, helped along by Dubois. The three stars were Morrissey, Dubois, and Wheeler, while Aho and Svechnikov get the honorable mentions. 

Back stateside, the St. Louis Blues bring in the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Jordan Binnington are between the pipes. St. Louis kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Noel Acciari goal, his fourth of the season, courtesy of Brayden Schenn. Anaheim tied it on a Cam Fowler goal, his second of the year, via Isac Lundestrom. The Blues took the lead back in the third period with a Justin Faulk power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou. St. Louis iced it at 3-1 with an Acciari empty net goal, his second of the game and fifth of the year, set up by Pavel Buchnevich. The three stars were Acciari, Binnington (27 for 28 in saves), and Faulk. 

To the east, the Nashville Predators host the Arizona Coyotes. Connor Ingram is mismatched with Juuse Saros in goal. Nashville was first to score in the first period with a Mikael Granlund power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Filip Forsberg and Roman Josi. Arizona tied it in the second period with a Lawson Crouse goal, his seventh of the year, guided in by Nick Bjugstad and Matias Maccelli. The Coyotes took the lead on a Bjugstad goal, his second of the season, coming off of Nick Ritchie and J.J. Moser. The Predators retied it in the third period with a Josi power play goal, his fourth of the year, with assists provided by Ryan Johansen and Granlund. Nashville pulled ahead with a Matt Duchene goal, his fifth of the season, with a lone helper by Colton Sissons. Arizona tied it on a shorthanded and unassisted Bjugstad goal, his second of the game and third of the year. The Blue Jackets took the lead in the second period with a Kent Johnson power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Johnny Gaudreau and Marcus Bjork. The Panthers tied it again with an Aaron Ekblad goal, his second of the year, via Forsling and Nick Cousins. Columbus took the lead with a Sean Kuraly shorthanded goal in the third period, his sixth of the season, set up by Eric Robinson and Andrew Peeke. The Blue Jackets added on with a Gaudreau goal, his seventh of the year, passed from Gutsav Nyquist. Columbus extended the lead as Boone Jenner scored his eighth of the season on the power play, with the help of Gaudreau and Emil Bemstrom.
