Pittsburgh kept going in the third inning on an Andrew McCutchen solo home run. Chicago got on the board in the bottom of the third as Anthony Rizzo singled to score Joe Mather. The Pirates shot back in the fourth inning when Marte tripled to force in Clint Barmes before scoring on a Travis Snider single, and then Snider scored as Jones doubled him in. The Cubs answered in the fifth inning as Mather grounded into a fielder's choice that gave time for Dave Sappelt to dash home, followed by Alfonso Soriano singling to drive in Darwin Barney. Pittsburgh got another in the seventh inning on a Barmes solo shot. Chicago answered in the eighth inning when Luis Valbuena singled Starlin Castro across the dish. The Cubs tried a ninth inning rally when Soriano singled Mather safely home, followed by Valbuena walking with the bases loaded to force in Barney, but they fell short and lost 7-6. Rodriguez was given the win, Joel Hanrahan turned an ugly save for his thirty-fifth of the year, and Berken was not freed from the loss.
Up in Canada, the Toronto Blue Jays host the Boston Red Sox. Clay Buchholz and Carlos Villanueva are the inconsistent pitchers. Toronto opened with a first inning Yunel Escobar single to knock in Edwin Encarnacion. Boston answered in the second inning on a Cody Ross solo home run. The Red Sox took the lead in the fourth inning on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia single to plate Ross. The Blue Jays retied it in the fifth inning on an Adam Lind sacrifice fly to allow Anthony Gose to dash home. Boston took the lead in the ninth inning on a Pedro Ciriaco double to drive in Saltalamacchia. This was good for a 3-2 win,picked up by Craig Breslow, while Andrew Bailey finished off for the save, and Steve Delabar was in line for the loss.
Back in the States, the Minnesota Twins host the Chicago White Sox. Francisco Liriano faces his old team, who pitched Samuel Deduno against him. Chicago kept going in the fourth inning as Gordon Beckham singled to knock in Dayan Viciedo. Minnesota got on the board in the seventh inning as Trevor Plouffe hit a two-run home run, sweeping in Justin Morneau. The White Sox struck again in the ninth inning as Alexei Ramirez singled to score Orlando Hudson. The Twins tried a ninth inning rally as Morneau grounded into a double play that saw Ben Revere score, but they still lost 5-3. Liriano earned the win, Matt Thornton got a spot save, and Deduno was charged with the loss.

The Giants retook the lead in the fifth inning when Buster Posey hit a two-run home run, also scoring Scutaro. The Diamondbacks took one back in the eighth inning on a Paul Goldschmidt single to plate Aaron Hill. They failed to get the equalizer, falling 3-2, with the win going to Zito, the save tossed by Sergio Romo, and the loss was stuck on Miley.
Further to the west, the San Diego Padres host the Colorado Rockies. Drew Pomeranz and Casey Kelly are the young starters. San Diego got going in the second inning as Andy Parrino doubled Cameron Maybin home. The Padres extended the lead in the third inning on a three-run home run by Jesus Guzman, sweeping in Logan Forsythe and Chase Headley. The Cubs added on in the fourth inning as Anthony Rizzo doubled both Darwin Barney and David DeJesus in, followed by Alfonso Soriano singling Valbuena safely home. Pittsburgh got on the board in the fifth inning with Pedro Alvarez singling to provide time for Gaby Sanchez to get home. The Pirates pulled closer in the sixth inning as Sanchez singled to score Starling Marte, followed by Alvarez grounding out to allow Garrett Jones to dash home. Chicago extended the lead in their half of the inning as Castro hit a three-run home run, sweeping in Valbuena and Soriano. Pittsburgh got one back with a seventh inning Andrew McCutchen solo home run. This was as close as it got, leaving the final at 7-4. Rusin picked up the win, Carlos Marmol converted his twentieth save of the year, and McDonald was dinged for the loss.

Thursday Night Football Week 2
Tonight's football dosage comes in the form of a huge NFC North game, as the Green Bay Packers host the Chicago Bears. Green Bay started with a second quarter Mason Crosby field goal of 48 yards. The Packers added on as Crosby lined up for a field goal, but holder Tim Masthay had other ideas, throwing 27 yards for a touchdown to Tom Crabtree, leaving Crosby to tack on the extra point instead. Green Bay added on when Crosby kicked a 35 yard field goal. Chicago got on the board in the third quarter as Robbie Gould nailed a field goal from 45 yards out. The Packers answered on a big Crosby fourth quarter field goal, true from an impressive 54 yards away. Green Bay kept going as Aaron Rodgers tossed a 26 yard touchdown to Donald Driver, and Crosby was there with the PAT. The Bears got some back as Jay Cutler found Kellen Davis on a 21 yard touchdown pass, and Gould iced it with the extra point. This was as close as it got, with the final being 23-10, and both teams moved to 1-1.

St. Louis got going in the second inning as Pete Kozma tripled to force both David Freese and Daniel Descalso home. San Diego answered in their half of the inning as Chris Denorfia singled to knock in Everth Cabrera before scoring on a Logan Forsythe double. The Padres took the lead on a two-run home run by Cameron Maybin, also scoring Yasmani Grandal. San Diego extended the lead in the fourth inning as Jesus Guzman singled Denorfia around, followed by Yonder Alonso doing the same to finish Guzman's trip around. The Cardinals shot back in the sixth inning with an Allen Craig single that drove in Matt Holliday. The Padres answered in the seventh inning as Will Venable reached on a fielder's choice that got Maybin home, before he scored on a Denorfia single that combined with an error. San Diego added on in the eighth inning as Venable singled to plate both Alonso and Maybin, followed by Denorfia singling Cabrera around. Two games on the Monday slate in football to close week 1. The first is...
The Baltimore Ravens hosting the Cincinnati Bengals. Baltimore began with a first quarter field goal by Justin Tucker from 46 yards away. The Ravens added on as Ray Rice ran 7 yards for a touchdown, and Tucker supplied the extra point. Cincinnati got on the board in the second quarter as Mike Nugent nailed a field goal of 34 yards. Baltimore shot back as Joe Flacco tossed a 34 yard touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin, and Tucker was good on the extra point. The Bengals pulled back as BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed 6 yards for a touchdown, and Nugent tacked on the extra point. Cincinnati got closer in the third quarter as Nugent made a 19 yard field goal. The Ravens extended the lead as Flacco hooked up with Dennis Pitta on a 10 yard touchdown pass, and Tucker again made the PAT. Baltimore later added on with a Tucker field goal of 40 yards. The Ravens got more as Ed Reed picked off Andy Dalton, and returned the ball 34 yards for a touchdown, allowing Tucker another extra point. San Diego tied it as Nate Kaeding hit a 23 yard field goal. The Chargers took the lead in the second quarter as Philip Rivers tossed a 6 yard touchdown pass to Malcom Floyd, iced off by a Kaeding extra point. The Raiders got some back as Janikowski kicked in a 19 yard field goal. San Diego extended the lead in the third quarter with a 28 yard field goal by Kaeding. The Chargers struck again on another field goal by Kaeding, this time from 19 yards. San Diego added on again in the fourth quarter as Kaeding booted a 41 yard field goal. The Chargers continued kicking, as Kaeding supplied another field goal from 45 yards away. Oakland got some back when Carson Palmer tossed a 2 yard touchdown pass to Rod Streater, and then converted the two-point attempt with another Palmer and Streater connection. This only made it 22-14, a final, with San Diego going to 1-0 while Oakland fell to 0-1.

NFL Week 1 Afternoon/Night Games 2012
With the schedule imbalance from morning to afternoon, I'll throw the primetime game in here to beef it up a bit too. Four total in this post, with the first in...
Tampa Bay, as the Buccaneers host the Carolina Panthers. Tampa Bay opened in the first quarter as Josh Freeman threw a 6 yard touchdown pass to Mike Williams. The Buccaneers added on with a 36 yard field goal from Connor Barth. Tampa Bay struck again in the second quarter as Barth nailed a 20 yard field goal. Carolina got on the board in the third quarter as Cam Newton passed 22 yards to Brandon LaFell, and then Justin Medlock kicked in the extra point. The Buccaneers extended the lead with a fourth quarter field goal from Barth, good from 40 yards away. The Panthers shot back as Medlock nailed a field goal of 21 yards. This made it 16-10, a final, with Tampa Bay going to 1-0 and Carolina falling to 0-1.

The Packers got some back in the fourth quarter as Randall Cobb returned a punt 75 yards to the end zone for a touchdown, followed by Rodgers passing to Jordy Nelson for the two-point conversion. The 49ers extended the lead again on a 23 yard Frank Gore touchdown run, with Akers nailing the extra point. Denver took the lead back as Manning passed 1 yard for a touchdown to Jacob Tamme, and then Manning found Willis McGehee on the two-point conversion. The Broncos extended the lead on a Prater field goal of 26 yards. Denver iced it with Tracy Porter picking off Roethlisberger and taking it 44 yards to the end zone for a touchdown, but the two-point attempt failed as McGehee could not run the ball in. This finished the scoring at 31-19, with Denver going to 1-0 and Pittsburgh falling to 0-1.

Finally, we go back south to San Francisco, as the Giants host the Los Angeles Dodgers. Joe Blanton and Barry Zito pace the game. San Francisco began in the first inning as Hunter Pence doubled both Angel Pagan and Pablo Sandoval in. The Giants added on in the fifth inning as Marco Scutaro hit a sacrifice fly to get Pagan in. San Francisco struck again as Buster Posey hit a sixth inning solo home run. This ended the scoring at 4-0, with the win going to Zito and the loss to Blanton.

NFL Week 1 Morning Games 2012
You've seen the kickoff of the season, now here's the bulk of the games. For those of you read last year, you know that I split the games up by their scheduled starts. This will be easier this year thanks to the NFL moving the Afternoon Games back by 10-15 minutes. As a note, I will try to do every game this season, but if unseen circumstances arise, I will put my priorities in order and take time off as needed. That said, happy football season.
Our first game comes from Kansas City, as the Chiefs host the Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta opened with a first quarter Matt Ryan touchdown pass of 8 yards to Julio Jones, with Matt Bryant making the extra point. Kansas City got on the board with a 39 yard field goal by Ryan Succop. The Falcons extended the lead with a Bryant field goal from 34 yards. The Chiefs shot back in the second quarter on a 22 yard touchdown pass from Matt Cassel to Kevin Boss, and the Succop PAT tied the game. Atlanta regained the lead on another Ryan touchdown to Jones, this time for 14 yards, and Bryant provided the extra point. Kansas City pulled even again when Cassel ran 5 yards for a touchdown, and Succop put the equalizer through the uprights with the extra point. The Falcons took the lead with a field goal of 21 yards by Bryant. Atlanta kept going in the third quarter as Ryan rushed 5 yards for a touchdown, finished off with a Bryant extra point. The Falcons padded the lead as Ryan found Tony Gonzalez for a 7 yard touchdown pass, and Bryant again tacked on the extra point. Atlanta struck again in the fourth quarter as Bryant nailed a 30 yard field goal. The Falcons got some more with a 41 yard field goal for Bryant. The Chiefs got some too little, too late points when Shaun Draughn rushed 4 yards for a touchdown, and Succop tacked on the extra point. This made it 40-24 Falcons, a final. Atlanta goes to 1-0 while Kansas City starts in an 0-1 hole.
Into Ohio, where the Cleveland Browns host the Philadelphia Eagles. Cleveland led off in the first quarter as Phil Dawson kicked a 43 yard field goal. Philadelphia tied it in the second quarter when Alex Henery nailed a 42 yard field goal. The Eagles pulled ahead when Michael Vick found Jeremy Maclin on an 18 yard touchdown, and Henery supplied the extra point. The Browns got some back in the third quarter as Dawson booted a 42 yard field goal. Cleveland pulled closer in the fourth quarter as Dawson made a 22 yard field goal. The Browns took the lead as D'Qwell Jackson intercepted Vick, returning the ball 13 yards for a touchdown, and Dawson was good on the PAT. Philadelphia edged ahead with Vick connecting with Clay Harbor on a 4 yard touchdown pass, and Henery nailed the extra point to give them a 17-16 lead. This held as the final, with the Eagles improving to 1-0 and the Browns falling to 0-1.
Down in New Orleans, the Saints host the Washington Redskins. Washington began with a first quarter Billy Cundiff 37 yard field goal (presumably tucked just inside the left post). New Orleans gained the lead as Drew Brees threw a 20 yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Graham, and Garrett Hartley made the extra point. The Redskins took the lead back as Robert Griffin III connected with Pierre Garcon on an 88 yard touchdown pass, and Cundiff made the extra point. The Saints replied as Courtney Roby picked up a loose ball after a blocked punt and took it 4 yards for the touchdown, with Hartley supplying the extra point. Washington extended the lead again in the third quarter as Alfred Morris rushed 1 yard for a touchdown, and Cundiff got the extra point in. Cundiff also tacked on a 37 yard field goal for the Redskins. New Orleans shot back with a field goal of 21 yards for Hartley. Washington answered in the fourth quarter as Cundiff was true from 45 yards away. Detroit took a late lead as Stafford connected with Smith on a 5 yard touchdown pass, and Hanson's extra point made it 27-23, the final. The Lions' comeback effort puts them at 1-0 while The Rams take a disheartening loss to fall to 0-1.
South again, with the Tennessee Titans welcoming the New England Patriots. Tennessee got on the board with a first quarter 28 yard field goal from Rob Bironas. New England took the lead when Tom Brady found Aaron Hernandez for a 23 yard touchdown, finished off by a Stephen Gostkowski extra point. The Patriots added on in the second quarter as Dont'a Hightower recovered a fumble and took it 6 yards for a touchdown, with Gostkowski capping the play off with the extra point. New England extended the lead as Brady found Rob Gronkowski for a 2 yard touchdown, and Gostkowski added on the extra point. The Titans answered in the third quarter with Jake Locker throwing a 29 yard touchdown to Nate Washington, and Bironas was true with the extra point. The Patriots padded the lead as Stevan Ridley ran 1 yard for a touchdown, and Gostkowski provided the extra point. Tennessee got some back in the fourth quarter on a 24 yard field goal by Bironas. Into Texas, as the Houston Texans host the Miami Dolphins. Miami led off when Dan Carpenter kicked a first quarter 39 yard field goal. Houston tied it in the second quarter with a 35 yard Shayne Graham filed goal. The Texans gained the lead as Arian Foster ran for a 14 yard touchdown, and Graham supplied the extra point. Houston struck again when Foster ran 2 yards for another touchdown, with Graham again making the extra point. The Texans extended the lead with Matt Schaub finding Andre Johnson for a 14 yard touchdown connection, with Graham kicking another PAT. The Dolphins got some back in the third quarter as Marcus Thigpen returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown, allowing Carpenter to make the extra point. The Jets struck again in the second quarter as Sanchez connected with Stephen Hill for a 33 yard touchdown, and Folk again made the extra point. New York padded the lead with a 68 yard punt return by Kerley, taking it all the way home for the touchdown, and Folk added the PAT. Buffalo got on the board with a 56 yard C.J. Spiller touchdown run, followed by Rian Lindell's extra point. The Jets extended the lead on a Folk field goal of 25 yards. New York got another field goal from Folk from 39 yard away. The Jets kept going in the third quarter as Antonio Cromartie intercepted Ryan Fitzpatrick and returned the ball 40 yards for the touchdown, with Folk supplying another extra point. New York added on again as Sanchez found Hill for a 17 yard touchdown, finished off by the Folk extra point. The Bills got some back when Fitzpatrick passed to the proper team, finding Scott Chandler for a 5 yard touchdown, and Lindell was there to make the extra point. Buffalo pulled closer in the fourth quarter as Fitzpatrick tossed a 6 yard touchdown to Donald Jones, and Lindell again had the extra point. West to Minnesota, where the Vikings host the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville was first on the board in the first quarter with a 19 yard field goal from Josh Scobee. The Jaguars added on in the second quarter as Blaine Gabbert threw a 1 yard touchdown pass to Marcedes Lewis, but Scobee missed the nefarious extra point, the first such miss of the season. Minnesota got on the board with a 3 yard touchdown run by Adrian Peterson, and Blair Walsh made the extra point. The Vikings took the lead in the third quarter as Peterson found the end zone again on a 2 yard touchdown run, and Walsh supplied another extra point. Jacksonville pulled back on a Scobee field goal from 26 yards. Minnesota shot back in the fourth quarter as Walsh hit a field goal of 20 yards. Scobee answered for the Jaguars by making a 47 yard field goal. The Vikings kept pace when Walsh was true on a field goal from 42 yards away. Jacksonville stormed ahead as Gabbert found Cecil Shorts for a 39 yard touchdown connection, and then funneled the ball to Justin Blackmon for the two-point conversion. Minnesota practiced some heartbreak though, tying the game on a Walsh field goal from a whopping 55 yards away, forcing overtime. Under new rules, both teams get possession in overtime now, but the Jaguars did nothing with their attempt, and fell 26-23 in an especially heartbreaking manner.
