MLB Day 163 2012

Again, we run with a full slate today. The first games comes from...

Chicago, where the Cubs host the Pittsburgh Pirates. Wandy Rodriguez and Jason Berken are called on to start. Pittsburgh got going in the first inning as Garrett Jones hit a sacrifice fly to get Starling Marte home. The Pirates added on in the second inning as Rod Barajas singled home Pedro Alvarez. Pittsburgh kept going in the third inning on an Andrew McCutchen solo home run. Chicago got on the board in the bottom of the third as Anthony Rizzo singled to score Joe Mather. The Pirates shot back in the fourth inning when Marte tripled to force in Clint Barmes before scoring on a Travis Snider single, and then Snider scored as Jones doubled him in. The Cubs answered in the fifth inning as Mather grounded into a fielder's choice that gave time for Dave Sappelt to dash home, followed by Alfonso Soriano singling to drive in Darwin Barney. Pittsburgh got another in the seventh inning on a Barmes solo shot. Chicago answered in the eighth inning when Luis Valbuena singled Starlin Castro across the dish. The Cubs tried a ninth inning rally when Soriano singled Mather safely home, followed by Valbuena walking with the bases loaded to force in Barney, but they fell short and lost 7-6. Rodriguez was given the win, Joel Hanrahan turned an ugly save for his thirty-fifth of the year, and Berken was not freed from the loss.

Up in Canada, the Toronto Blue Jays host the Boston Red Sox. Clay Buchholz and Carlos Villanueva are the inconsistent pitchers. Toronto opened with a first inning Yunel Escobar single to knock in Edwin Encarnacion. Boston answered in the second inning on a Cody Ross solo home run. The Red Sox took the lead in the fourth inning on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia single to plate Ross. The Blue Jays retied it in the fifth inning on an Adam Lind sacrifice fly to allow Anthony Gose to dash home. Boston took the lead in the ninth inning on a Pedro Ciriaco double to drive in Saltalamacchia. This was good for a 3-2 win,picked up by Craig Breslow, while Andrew Bailey finished off for the save, and Steve Delabar was in line for the loss.

Back in the States, the Minnesota Twins host the Chicago White Sox. Francisco Liriano faces his old team, who pitched Samuel Deduno against him. Chicago began in the first inning as Paul Konerko grounded out to get Kevin Youkilis home. The White Sox added on in the third inning when Konerko hit a two-run home run, also scoring Adam Dunn. Chicago kept going in the fourth inning as Gordon Beckham singled to knock in Dayan Viciedo. Minnesota got on the board in the seventh inning as Trevor Plouffe hit a two-run home run, sweeping in Justin Morneau. The White Sox struck again in the ninth inning as Alexei Ramirez singled to score Orlando Hudson. The Twins tried a ninth inning rally as Morneau grounded into a double play that saw Ben Revere score, but they still lost 5-3. Liriano earned the win, Matt Thornton got a spot save, and Deduno was charged with the loss.

Over in Cleveland, the Indians host the Detroit Tigers. Anibal Sanchez and Justin Masterson are the shaky pitchers. Detroit started in the first inning as Brennan Boesch reached on an error that allowed Andy Dirks to come home, followed by Alex Avila singling to knock in Prince Fielder. The Tigers added on in the fourth inning with Austin Jackson hitting a sacrifice fly to get Quintin Berry home. Detroit struck again in the fifth inning as Avila doubled to plate Boesch. The Tigers padded the lead in the seventh inning on a Miguel Cabrera solo home run. Cleveland got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when Russ Canzler doubled to knock in Carlos Santana before scoring on a Lonnie Chisenhall single. The Indians pulled closer in the eighth inning on an Asdrubal Cabrera single to drive in Cord Phelps. They got no closer, losing 5-3, with the win going to Sanchez, the save turned by Jose Valverde, and the loss pinned on Masterson.

East to New York, as the Yankees host the Tampa Bay Rays. James Shields faces a lesser foe in Ivan Nova. New York got going in the second inning on a two-run home run by Curtis Granderson, also scoring Raul Ibanez, followed by an Eduardo Nunez solo home run. The Yankees padded the lead in the fifth inning as Derek Jeter singled to score Ichiro Suzuki. Tampa Bay got on the board in the sixth inning on an Evan Longoria solo shot. The Rays pulled closer in the seventh inning on a 2-RBI Luke Scott single, plating both Ben Francisco and Ryan Roberts. New York got one back in the eighth inning as Alex Rodriguez singled to score Robinson Cano. This produced the 5-3 final, with the win belonging to Nova, the save tossed by Rafael Soriano, and the loss was stuck on Shields.

South to Atlanta, where the Braves host the Washington Nationals. Edwin Jackson and Tommy Hanson are on the mound. Washington led off as Adam LaRoche hit a two-run home run, also scoring Jayson Werth in the first inning. The Nationals padded the lead in the second inning with Jackson sacrificing, which combined with an error to allow both Jesus Flores and Steve Lombardozzi to dash home. Atlanta got on the board in the bottom of the second as Dan Uggla doubled in Freddie Freeman. The Braves got another in the fourth inning on a Freeman solo home run. Atlanta tied it in the sixth inning as Jason Heyward hit a two-run home run, sweeping in Martin Prado. The Braves took the lead in the eighth inning when Andrelton Simmons was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Jeff Baker. This was good for a 5-4 win, with Eric O'Flaherty in line for the win, Craig Kimbrel closing out for the save, and Ryan Mattheus was on the hook for the loss.

Westward to Houston, as the Astros host the Philadelphia Phillies. Kyle Kendrick and Dallas Keuchel are the back-of-the-rotation pitchers. Houston began in the first inning on a two-run home run by Justin Maxwell, also scoring Jose Altuve. The Astros added on in the second inning as Altuve grounded into a fielder's choice that provided time for Jason Castro to score. Houston struck again in the fifth inning as Brett Wallace hit a ground rule double to force in the pitcher Keuchel. The Astros extended the lead in the sixth inning on a J.D. Martinez single that knocked in Castro. This was it for the scoring, with the final being 5-0. Keuchel earned the win and Kendrick was handed the loss.

Up in Kansas City, the Royals host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Zack Greinke and Jeremy Guthrie are the veteran pitchers. Los Angeles got things going in the fifth inning as Kendrys Morales hit a solo home run. The Angels added on in the eighth inning with Torii Hunter singling home Vernon Wells. Kansas City tried a ninth inning rally, tying the game as Billy Butler hit a two-run home run, also scoring Alex Gordon, before completing the comeback on an inside-the-park solo shot form Salvador Perez to clinch a 3-2 victory. Kelvin Herrera was in line for the win and Ernesto Frieri blew up for the loss.

Southeast to Miami, as the Marlins host the Cincinnati Reds. Johnny Cueto and Mark Buehrle are the staff aces pitching. Miami quickly started in the first inning as Giancarlo Stanton tripled to force in both Justin Ruggiano and Jose Reyes before finishing his trip on a Carlos Lee sacrifice fly. Cincinnati got on the board in the third inning as Wilson Valdez singled home Ryan Hanigan. The Reds pulled closer in the fourth inning on a Scott Rolen single to plate Jay Bruce. The Marlins extended the lead in the fifth inning as Reyes doubled home Ruggiano before scoring on a two-run home run by Lee. Cincinnati chipped away in the eighth inning as Ryan Ludwick hit a two-run home run, also scoring Joey Votto. This produced the 6-4 final score, with the win belonging to Buehrle, the save tossed by Steve Cishek, and the loss stuck on Cueto.

Way to the north, the Milwaukee Brewers host the New York Mets. Jenrry Mejia is mismatched with Shaun Marcum. New York opened in the first inning as Lucas Duda singled in Daniel Murphy. Milwaukee tied it in their half of the inning as Ryan Braun doubled home Rickie Weeks. The Mets took the lead in the fourth inning with Mejia sacrificing to get Jordany Valdespin home, followed by Ruben Tejada singling to score Andres Torres before coming home on a double by Murphy. The Brewers pulled ahead in the bottom of the fourth as Logan Schafer tripled to force in Nyjer Morgan and Jean Segura before scoring on a wild pitch, and then Weeks hit a two-run home run, also scoring Norichika Aoki. Milwaukee extended the lead in the fifth inning with Travis Ishikawa tripling to push in Morgan before coming the final 90 feet on an Aoki single. The Brewers got another in the seventh inning as Weeks doubled to drive in Segura. New York tried a ninth inning rally as Ike Davis hit a two-run home, sweeping in David Wright, and producing the 9-6 final. Brandon Kintzler was credited with the win and Mejia was dinged for the loss.

South again to Texas, as the Rangers host the Seattle Mariners. Jason Vargas and Scott Feldman take their turns in the rotation. Seattle began in the first inning as Michael Saunders singled in Franklin Gutierrez. The Mariners extended the lead in the third inning as Dustin Ackley hit a solo home run, followed by Saunders tripling both Kyle Seager and John Jaso across the dish before scoring on a single from Justin Smoak, who later scored as Eric Thames hit a single. Texas got on the board in the bottom of the third as Nelson Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Ian Kinsler. The Rangers pulled closer in the sixth inning on a three-run home run by Mike Napoli, sweeping in Cruz and Michael Young. Texas pulled even in the seventh inning with Cruz singling to plate Josh Hamilton, followed by David Murphy grounding out to allow Adrian Beltre safe passage home. Seattle took the lead back in the eighth inning on a Smoak solo shot. The Mariners struck again in the ninth inning as Smoak singled to drive in Munenori Kawasaki. This was good for an 8-6 win, picked up by Lucas Luetge, while Tom Wilhelmsen converted the save, and Tony Scheppers was nailed for the loss.

Westward to Arizona, as the Diamondbacks welcome the San Francisco Giants. Barry Zito and Wade Miley are penciled in to pitch. San Francisco was first to score with a first inning groundout by Marco Scutaro to bring in Angel Pagan. Arizona tied it in the fourth inning on a Justin Upton solo home run. The Giants retook the lead in the fifth inning when Buster Posey hit a two-run home run, also scoring Scutaro. The Diamondbacks took one back in the eighth inning on a Paul Goldschmidt single to plate Aaron Hill. They failed to get the equalizer, falling 3-2, with the win going to Zito, the save tossed by Sergio Romo, and the loss was stuck on Miley.

Further to the west, the San Diego Padres host the Colorado Rockies. Drew Pomeranz and Casey Kelly are the young starters. San Diego got going in the second inning as Andy Parrino doubled Cameron Maybin home. The Padres extended the lead in the third inning on a three-run home run by Jesus Guzman, sweeping in Logan Forsythe and Chase Headley. Colorado rallied back in the seventh inning as Chris Nelson doubled to plate Wilin Rosario, followed by Charlie Blackmon singling to score Tyler Colvin, and DJ LeMahieu hitting a sacrifice fly to finish Nelson's trip around. They failed to tie the game, losing 4-3, with the win belonging to Kelly, the save tossed by Luke Gregerson, and loss pinned on Pomeranz.

Up in Oakland, the Athletics host the Baltimore Orioles. Zach Britton and Jarrod Parker are on the hill. Baltimore started in the second inning on a Mark Reynolds double to knock in Adam Jones. The Orioles got another in the third inning as Nate McLouth hit a solo home run. Oakland rallied ahead in the bottom of the third as Stephen Drew hit a solo shot, followed by Josh Reddick singling in Coco Crisp, Yoenis Cespedes doing the same for Jonny Gomes, and Chris Carter doubling to plate both Reddick and Cespedes. The scoring ended here, with the final being 5-2. Parker notched the win, Grant Balfour worked from a jam for the save, and Britton was shelled in the loss.

Finally, we end in Los Angeles, with the Dodgers hosting the St. Louis Cardinals. Jaime Garcia and Joe Blanton pace the game. St. Louis led off with a first inning two-run home run by Allen Craig, also scoring Matt Holliday. Los Angeles got on the board in their half of the inning as Adrian Gonzalez singled home Shane Victorino. The Dodgers tied it in the third inning on a Mark Ellis solo home run. The Cardinals retook the lead in the sixth inning as Craig singled to plate the pitcher Garcia. Los Angeles tied it in the ninth inning as Luis Cruz doubled Dee Gordon around, before winning 4-3 as Juan Rivera singled to drive in Elian Herrera. Ronald Belisario was in line for the win, while the Jason Motte was responsible for the loss.
