MLB Day 161 2012

Only eight games today, with the pivotal White Sox-Tigers game being postponed until Monday. Most of the National League are traveling. The games begin in...

Baltimore, as the Orioles host the Tampa Bay Rays. Jeremy Hellickson and Wei-Yin Chen are on the mound. Tampa Bay opened in the fourth inning as Jeff Keppinger hit a sacrifice fly to get Ben Zobrist home. Baltimore took the lead in the seventh inning with a 2-RBI Taylor Teagarden double, plating both Manny Machado and Robert Andino. The Rays tied it in the eighth inning as Zobrist singled home Desmond Jennings. The Orioles won 3-2 in the fourteenth inning on a Machado single to knock in Adam Jones. Randy Wolf picked up the win and Chris Archer was stuck with the loss.

Out in California, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim host the Oakland Athletics. Brett Anderson and Jered Weaver receive the starting nods. Los Angeles finally got things going in the seventh inning on a Torii Hunter solo home run, followed by Mark Trumbo singling in Erick Aybar, Alberto Callaspo doing the same for both Trumbo and Vernon Wells, Mike Trout scoring on a passed ball, and Hunter singling to finish Callaspo's trip around. This was it for the scoring, with the final being 6-0, giving the win to Weaver, while Anderson was stuck with the loss.

Up in Canada, the Toronto Blue Jays host the Seattle Mariners. Felix Hernandez opposes a lesser foe in Henderson Alvarez. Toronto started in the first inning with a two-run home run by Adam Lind, also scoring Colby Rasmus. Seattle got on the board in the second inning as Carlos Peguero doubled in both John Jaso and Justin Smoak. The Blue Jays answered in the fourth inning when Brett Lawrie singled to score both Jeff Mathis and Anthony Gose, followed by a three-run Edwin Encarnacion home run, sweeping in Lawrie and Rasmus. Toronto extended the lead in the fifth inning when Mathis singled to get Kelly Johnson home. The Mariners replied in the seventh inning as Dustin Ackley hit a solo home run. This was as close as it go, with the final being 8-3. Alvarez picked up the win and Hernandez was shelled in the loss.

Back in the States, the Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees. Phil Hughes and Felix Doubront are the overrated pitchers. New York began in the fourth inning as Andruw Jones hit a sacrifice fly to get Alex Rodriguez home. The Yankees got another in the seventh inning as Derek Jeter singled to knock in Steve Pearce. This gave them a 2-0 lead that they took to be a final, with Hughes earning the win, while Rafael Soriano tossed the save, and Doubront was the unlucky losing pitcher.

South to Texas, with the Rangers hosting the Cleveland Indians. Zach McAllister and Derek Holland are the young pitchers. Texas led off in the fourth inning as Michael Young singled to score Adrian Beltre, followed by Mitch Moreland grounding into a fielder's choice to allow Nelson Cruz to dash home. Cleveland tied it in the sixth inning as Matt LaPorta hit a two-run home run, also scoring Vinny Rottino. The Rangers retook the lead in the eighth inning when Cruz reached on an error to get Elvis Andrus home, and Young singled Beltre around. The Indians tried a ninth inning rally as Ezequiel Carrera hit a solo home run, before taking the lead on a two-run blast by Jason Kipnis, sweeping in Jason Donald. They held on for a 5-4 win, picked up by Scott Maine, while Chris Perez tossed the save, and Joe Nathan was on the hook for the loss.

Staying in the state, the Houston Astros host the Philadelphia Phillies. Tyler Cloyd and Lucas Harrell are the back-of-the-rotation starters. Philadelphia was first to score with a second inning Erik Kratz double to drive in Domonic Brown. The Phillies extended the lead in the third inning on a Ryan Howard sacrifice fly to bring in Juan Pierre, a John Mayberry singled to plate Chase Utley, and a Kevin Frandsen single doing the same for Mayberry. Houston got on the board in the fourth inning as Matt Dominguez hit a three-run home run, sweeping in Justin Maxwell and Jason Castro. The Astros took the lead in the eighth inning as Jed Lowrie doubled in both Dominguez and Jordan Lyles, followed by Brandon Barnes singling Lowrie the rest of the way home. This was good for a 6-4 win, picked up by Wesley Wright, while Wilton Lopez turned the save, and Phillippe Aumont was pinned with the loss.

North to Minnesota, as the Twins host the Kansas City Royals. Luis Mendoza and Liam Hendriks are penciled in to pitch. Kansas City wasted little time in scoring first with a 2-RBI Salvador Perez single in the first inning, scoring both Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon. Minnesota got one back in their half of the inning on a Josh Willingham solo home run. The Royals added on in the fifth inning as Billy Butler doubled in David Lough. The Twins got one back in the eighth inning as Willingham drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Drew Butera. Minnesota tied it in the ninth inning on a Trevor Plouffe solo shot. The Twins won in the tenth inning by a 4-3 score as Denard Span doubled to drive in Alexi Casilla. Glen Perkins was in line for the win, while Francisley Bueno was given the loss.

Finally, we end in Los Angeles, as the Dodgers host the St. Louis Cardinals. Lance Lynn and Josh Beckett take the hill. Los Angeles began in the first inning as Adrian Gonzalez doubled to knock in Mark Ellis. St. Louis tied it in the second inning when Skip Schumaker singled in Yadier Molina. The Cardinals took the lead in the seventh inning as Allen Craig singled home Shane Robinson. This was good for a 2-1 final, with the win going to Lynn, the save converted by Jason Motte, and the loss stuck on Paco Rodriguez.
