NHL 2019-20 - Day 53

Fourteen games on Saturday, including three matinees. We begin with...

The Washington Capitals hosting the Vancouver Canucks. Jacob Markstrom and Braden Holtby are the masked men. Washington led off in the first period with a Jakub Vrana goal, his eleventh of the season, passed from Lars Eller. Vancouver tied it on an Elias Pettersson power play goal, his tenth of the year, powered by J.T. Miller and Quinn Hughes. In the shootout, Bo Horvat had the lone tally for a 2-1 Canucks win. The three stars were Markstrom (32 for 33 in saves), Holtby (32 for 33 in saves), and Pettersson.

Over in Philadelphia, the Flyers welcome the Calgary Flames. David Rittich and Carter Hart are in goal. Philadelphia got going in the second period with a Jakub Voracek goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Travis Sanheim and Sean Couturier. Calgary tied it on an Andrew Mangiapane goal, his fifth of the year, via Mikael Backlund in the third period. The Flyers retook the lead with a Kevin Hayes goal, his sixth of the season, courtesy of Joel Farabee. The Flames tied it again with an Elias Lindholm goal, his eleventh of the year, guided in by Rasmus Andersson and Johnny Gaudreau. The tie went to the shootout, where Matthew Tkachuk secured a 3-2 win for the Flames. The three stars were Rittich (36 for 38 in saves), Lindholm, and Mangiapane.

Out west, the Los Angeles Kings bring in the Arizona Coyotes. Antti Raanta and Jonathan Quick draw the starts in goal. Arizona began in the first period with a Phil Kessel power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Clayton Keller and Derek Stepan. Los Angeles tied it on an Anze Kopitar power play goal in the second period, his ninth of the year, with assists provided by Drew Doughty and Adrian Kempe. The Coyotes retook the lead on a Lawson Crouse goal, his fifth of the season, passed from Carl Soderberg and Vinnie Hinostroza. Arizona added on with an unassisted Christian Fischer empty net goal, his second of the year. Columbus opened in the first period with a Pierre-Luc Dubois goal, his tenth of the season, a power play goal powered by Boone Jenner and Oliver Bjorkstand. Winnipeg tied it on a Blake Wheeler goal, his sixth of the year, fueled by Jack Roslovic and Dmitry Kulikov. The Jets took the lead with a Nikolaj Ehlers goal, his eleventh of the season, with a lone assist by Wheeler in the second period. The Blue Jackets retied it again with a Seth Jones power play goal, his second of the year, with assists provided by Zach Werenski and Cam Atkinson. The Panthers added on with a Brian Boyle goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Colton Sceviour and Anton Stralman. Northeast to Montreal, as the Canadiens welcome the New York Rangers. Alexandar Georgiev and Carey Price man the creases. Montreal drew first blood in the first period with a Max Domi goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Nick Suzuki and Artturi Lehkonen. The Canadiens added on with a Lehkonen goal, his fourth of the year, via Joel Armia and Mike Reilly. Montreal extended the lead as Domi scored his second of the game and sixth of the season, thanks to Suzuki and Ben Chiarot. The Canadiens padded the lead in the second period on a Shea Weber goal, his seventh of the year, assisted by Chiarot and Charles Hudon. New York got on the board with a Filip Chytil goal, his seventh of the season, passed from Artemi Panarin and Brady Skjei. The Rangers got closer with a Pavel Buchnevich goal, his fourth of the year, courtesy of Brett Howden. Back stateside, the New Jersey Devils bring in the Detroit Red Wings. Jonathan Bernier and Louis Domingue receive the starting nods in goal. Detroit dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Taro Hirose goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Madison Bowey. New Jersey tied it on a Kyle Palmieri goal, his eighth of the year, helped along by Taylor Hall and Sami Vatanen. The Devils took the lead in the third period with a Will Butcher goal, his third of the season, passed from Nico Hischier. New Jersey added on with an unassisted Blake Coleman goal, his sixth of the year. The Devils extended the lead as Hall scored an empty net goal, his fourth of the season, going in unassisted. New Jersey padded the lead as Coleman scored his second of the game and seventh of the year, thanks to Miles Wood and John Hayden. This stood for a 5-1 win, with the three stars being Coleman, Hall, and Domingue (19 for 20 in saves).

Way south to Tampa Bay, as the Lightning host the Anaheim Ducks. Ryan Miller and Andrei Vasilevskiy are in the blue paint. Tampa Bay was first to score in the first period with a Brayden Point goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Jan Rutta and Cory Conacher. Next up, the Dallas Stars bring in the Chicago Blackhawks. Robin Lehner and Anton Khudobin will play goal. Dallas began in the first period with a Roope Hintz goal, his tenth of the season, assisted by John Klingberg and Alexander Radulov. Chicago tied it on an Olli Maatta goal, via Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane. The tie went to a shootout, where Joe Pavelski and Tyler Seguin tallied to give the Stars a 2-1 win. Edmonton replied in the second period with a Markus Granlund goal, his second of the year, courtesy of Gaetan Haas and Patrick Russell. The Golden Knights got one back with an unassisted Shea Theodore goal, his second of the season. The Oilers countered in the third period with a McDavid power play goal, his eighteenth of the year and second of the game, powered by Draisaitl. The final remained at 4-2, with the three stars being McDavid, Draisaitl, and Kassian.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks host the New York Islanders. Semyon Varlamov and Martin Jones have the green light to start in goal. San Jose got going in the second period with a Marcus Sorensen goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Mario Ferraro and Joe Thornton. New York tied it on a Casey Cizikas goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock. The Sharks won 2-1 in overtime with a Logan Couture goal, his fifth of the campaign, assisted by Evander Kane and Brent Burns. The three stars were Jones (27 for 28 in saves), Couture, and Sorensen.

Just two games on a quiet Friday night, beginning with...

The Pittsburgh Penguins welcoming the New Jersey Devils. MacKenzie Blackwood and Tristan Jarry are the masked men. Pittsburgh began in the first period with a Dominik Kahun goal, his sixth of the season, made possible by Dominik Simon. New Jersey tied it in the second period with a Taylor Hall power play goal, his third of the year, powered by Nico Hischier and Kyle Palmieri. The Penguins retook the lead on a Jake Guentzel goal, his eleventh of the season, fueled by Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust. Pittsburgh added on in the third period with a Jared McCann goal, his eighth of the year, helped along by Alex Galchenyuk and Brandon Tanev. The Penguins extended the lead as John Marino scored his second of the season, thanks to Zach Aston-Reese and Sam Lafferty. Louis Domingue replaced Blackwood in goal. The final was 4-1, with the three stars given to Jarry (36 for 37 in saves), Guentzel, and McCann.

Up in Ottawa, the Senators bring in the New York Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist and Anders Nilsson are in the creases. Ottawa led off in the first period with a Thomas Chabot goal, his second of the season, assisted by Brady Tkachuk and Anthony Duclair. The Senators added on with a Logan Brown power play goal, powered by Jean-Gabriel Pageau. New York got on the board with a Jacob Trouba goal, his second of the year, passed from Ryan Lindgren and Tim Gettinger. Ottawa replied with a Tyler Ennis goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of Colin White and Chris Tierney. The Senators extended the lead as Duclair scored his tenth of the year on the power play, thanks to Pageau and Chabot. The final held at 4-1 with Duclair, Chabot, and Nilsson (30 for 31 in saves) getting the three stars while Pageau picked up an honorable mention.

The New York Islanders hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins. Matt Murray and Thomas Greiss are in goal. Pittsburgh started in the first period with an Evgeni Malkin goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Jake Guentzel and John Marino. New York tied it on a Scott Mayfield goal, his third of the year, via Mathew Barzal. The Penguins retook the lead in the second period with an unassisted Bryan Rust goal, his eighth of the season. The Islanders tied it again with an Anthony Beauvillier power play goal, his eighth of the year, powered by Derick Brassard and Ryan Pulock. New York gained the lead in the third period with a Brock Nelson power play goal, his seventh of the season, with assists provided by Beauvillier and Barzal. Pittsburgh tied it as Patric Hornqvist scored his sixth of the year, thanks to Malkin and Brian Dumoulin. The Islanders won 4-3 in overtime with a Nelson goal, his second of the game and eighth of the campaign, guided in by Barzal. Finally, the Los Angeles Kings host the Edmonton Oilers. Mike Smith and Jonathan Quick are the experienced goalies. The Montreal Canadiens welcoming the Ottawa Senators. Craig Anderson and Carey Price are in goal. Montreal got going in the second period with a Nick Suzuki power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Phillip Danault and Brendan Gallagher. Ottawa tied it on a Jean-Gabriel Pageau goal, his thirteenth of the year, via Tyler Ennis and Mark Borowiecki. The Senators won 2-1 in overtime with a Brady Tkachuk goal, his eighth of the campaign, passed from Chris Tierney and Nikita Zaitsev. This made it 2-1, the final, with the three stars being Anderson (35 for 36 in saves), Tkachuk, and Pageau.

In New York, the Rangers bring in the Washington Capitals. Braden Holtby and Henrik Lundqvist protect the nets. Along to St. Louis, where the Blues welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Jordan Binnington tend the twines. Tampa Bay was first to score in the first period with an Anthony Cirelli goal, his third of the season, powered by Alex Killorn and Victor Hedman. St. Louis tied it in the second period with a David Perron goal, his ninth of the year, coming off of Colton Parayko and Ryan O'Reilly. The Blues took the lead in the third period with an Oskar Sundqvist goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Robert Thomas. Vegas extended the lead in the third period as Max Pacioretty scored his eighth of the season, thanks to Karlsson and Schmidt. The Golden Knights padded the lead with a Cody Eakin goal, guided in by Jonathan Marchessault. Vegas kept going with a Mark Stone power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Pacioretty. The Golden Knights capped it at 6-0 with a Karlsson goal, his second of the game and eighth of the campaign, fueled by Brayden McNabb and Schmidt.
