Major League Soccer 2016 - Week 26

Only six games as this week is during an international break. We begin with Thursday's lone game, featuring...

New York City FC hosting DC United. Bill Hamid and Josh Saunders are in goal. DC saw a yellow card for a thirty-third minute foul by Luciano Acosta. United started in the thirty-sixth minute with a Lloyd Sam goal, via Patrick Nyarko and Acosta. DC's Rob Vincent took a yellow card for a fifty-eighth minute foul. New York City tied it on a seventy-ninth minute David Villa goal. New York City took the lead on an eighty-fifth minute goal by Frank Lampard, assisted by Villa and Khiry Shelton. United retied it in stoppage time on a Lamar Neagle goal, set up by Julian Buescher. New York City regained the lead two minutes later on Lampard's second of the game, coming off of Shelton. The game ended 3-2, with Lampard the man of the match for his brace, including the winner.

On Saturday, the first of six games had the Vancouver Whitecaps FC welcoming the New York Red Bulls. Luis Robles and David Ousted play goal. New York's Alex Muyl had a yellow card for a twentieth minute foul. Vancouver saw Fraser Aird take a yellow card for his foul in the twenty-ninth minute. The Red Bulls got going in the fiftieth minute on a Bradley Wright-Phillips goal. Mike Grella of New York received a yellow card for his foul in the sixtieth minute. The Whitecaps saw a yellow card assessed to Andrew Jacobson in the eighty-eighth minute for a foul. The game ended at 1-0, with Wright-Phillips the man of the match for his winner.

East to New England, where the Revolution bring in the Colorado Rapids. Zac MacMath and Brad Knighton are the backups in goal. New England opened in the twelfth minute with a Juan Agudelo goal, assisted by Gershon Koffie and Lee Nguyen. Colorado saw yellow cards for Sam Cronin in the twenty-second minute, Dominique Badji in the twenty-ninth minute, and MacMath in the thirty-second minute, all for fouls. The Revolution added on in the forty-ninth minute on a Chris Tierney goal, passed from Diego Fagundez and Kelyn Rowe. The Rapids took a yellow card for a Bobby Burling foul in stoppage time. The game ended at 2-0, with Agudelo the man of the match for his winner.

Backtracking to Chicago, where the Fire host the Philadelphia Union. John McCarthy and Sean Johnson are in the six-yard boxes. Chicago was first to score when Philadelphia's Roland Alberg committed an own goal in the twenty-second minute. The Fire saw yellow cards for Joao Meira in the fifty-eighth minute, Razvan Cocis in the sixty-first minute, and Johan Kappelhof in the sixty-fourth minute, all for fouls. Chicago added on with a seventy-first minute Michael de Leeuw goal. Chicago extended the lead as Arturo Alvarez scored in the ninetieth minute, with the help of de Leeuw. The final stood at 3-0, with de Leeuw the man of the match with his goal and assist.

Down in Texas, FC Dallas welcomes the Portland Timbers. Jake Gleeson and Chris Seitz are the gloved men. Dallas struck first in the fourteenth minute with a Mauro Diaz penalty kick goal. Jack Jewsbury of Portland took a yellow card for a twenty-second minute foul. Dallas added on in first half stoppage time with a Victor Ulloa goal. Juan Esteban Ortiz of Dallas took a yellow card for a forty-sixth minute foul. The Timbers saw Liam Ridgewell booked on a yellow card for a fifty-second minute foul. Dallas extended the lead as Walker Zimmerman scored in the fifty-third minute, thanks to Diaz. Matt Hedges of Dallas had a yellow card for a fifty-fourth minute foul, as did teammate Maximiliano Urruti in the fifty-ninth minute. Portland got on the board with an eighty-seventh minute goal from Diego Valeri, courtesy of Zarek Valentin. Ned Grabavoy of the Timbers took a yellow card in second half stoppage time. The game ended at 3-1, with Diaz the man of the match.

Finally, the short week ends with the Los Angeles Galaxy bringing in the Columbus Crew SC. Steve Clark and Brian Rowe protect the nets. Los Angeles dented the scoreboard in the seventy-eighth minute on a Baggio Husidic goal, assisted by Sebastian Lletget. The Galaxy added on with an eighty-second minute Giovani dos Santos goal, guided in by Robbie Rogers. Columbus got on the board with an Adam Jahn stoppage time goal on the penalty kick. This only made it 2-1, the final, with the man of the match being Rowe (seven for eight in saves).

KHL 2016/17 - Day 13

Only two games on the slate today, beginning with...

Ugra Khanty-Mansiysk hosting Traktor Chelyabinsk. Vasily Demchenko and Alexander Sharychenkov are in goal. Chelyabinsk led off in the first period with an Alexander Chernikov goal, guided in by Yury Petrov. Khanty-Mansiysk tied it on an Andrei Ankudinov goal, assisted by Igor Radulov and Vitaly Shulakov. The tie went to a shootout, where Pavel Varfolomeyev scored twice for Ugra to top one tally by Traktor's Igor Mirnov for a 2-1 Ugra win. The three stars went to Varfolomeyev, Sharychenkov (27 for 28 in saves), and Demchenko (32 for 33 in saves).

The other game sees Severstal Cherepovets host Ak Bars Kazan. Emil Garipov and Jakub Kovar protect the nets. Cherepovets began in the first period with an Igor Skorokhodov goal, coming off of Igor Magogin and Vitaly Sitnikov. Kazan tied it in the second period with an Alexander Svitov power play goal, powered by Vasily Tokranov and Jiri Sekac. Ak Bars took the lead in the third period on a Mikhail Sidorov goal, fueled by Mikhail Zhukov and Sekac. Severstal tied it on a Pavel Chernov power play goal, made possible by Adam Masuhr and Dmitry Kagarlitsky. Kazan won 3-2 on an overtime penalty shot goal by Vladimir Tkachyov, after he was interfered with by Denis Yezhov. The three stars were Tkachyov, Sekac, and Sidorov.

KHL 2016/17 - Day 12

Six games on for today, beginning with...

Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg hosting Salavat Yulaev. Niklas Svedberg and Vladimir Sokhatsky. Yekaterinburg led off in the first period with an Alexander Torchenyuk power play goal, powered by Anatoly Golyshev and Artyom Gareyev. Ufa tied it on a Mikhail Vorobyov goal, guided in by Anton Lazarev and Kirill Kaprizov. Avtomobilist took the lead back with a Gareyev goal, passed from Golyshev. Salavat Yulaev retied it with a Teemu Hartikainen power play goal in the second period, with assists from Andreas Engqvist and Sami Lepisto. Yekaterinburg took the lead on a Torchenyuk goal, assisted by Nikolai Timashov and Golyshev, the latter getting a sock trick. Ufa tied it once more with an Igor Grigorenko goal, made possible by Zakhar Arzamastsev. The tie went to a shootout, where Avtomobilist prevailed on goals by Dmitry Monya and Tommi Kivisto, topping Kaprizov's lone tally. The three stars went to Torchenyuk, Golyshev, and Gareyev.

Westward to St. Petersburg, where SKA welcomes Lada Togliatti. Ilya Ezhov and Igor Shestyorkin draw the starts in goal. St. Petersburg opened in the first period with an Anton Belov goal, fueled by Evgeny Dadonov and Vadim Shipachyov. SKA added on with an Alexander Barabanov goal, guided in by Sergei Shirokov and Nikolai Prokhorkin. Togliatti got on the board with an Alexei Volgin power play goal, with a lone assist by Georgy Belousov. St. Petersburg replied in the second period with a Dadonov goal, made possible by Nikita Gusev and Maxim Chudinov. SKA extended the lead as Gusev scored in the third period, with the help of Chudinov and Dadonov. St. Petersburg finished it at 5-1 with a Barabanov goal, his second of the game, coming off of Prokhorkin and Shirokov. The three stars went to Barabanov, Dadonov, and Gusev, while Chudinov, Prokhorkin, and Shirokov get the honorable mentions.

In Moscow, Dynamo brings in Sibir Novosibirsk. Alexei Krasikov and Alexander Yeryomenko protect the nets. Moscow began in the first period with a power play goal by Artyom Podshendyalov, powered by Alexei Tsvetkov and Artyom Fyodorov. Dynamo added on with an Alexander Rybakov goal, via Mat Robinson. Moscow extended the lead as Ansel Galimov scored, thanks to Dmitry Markovin and Konstantin Gorovikov. Novosibirsk got on the board with a Konstantin Okulov goal, helped along by Oleg Gubin. Dynamo padded the lead with a Tsvetkov goal, courtesy of Podshendyalov and Fyodorov. This made it a 4-1 win, with the three stars given to Tsvetkov, Podshendyalov, and Fyodorov.

Moving along to Yaroslavl, where Lokomotiv hosts Metallurg Novokuznetsk. Andrei Kareyev is mismatched with Alexei Murygin in goal. Yaroslavl struck first in the first period with a Yegor Averin goal, assisted by Mikhail Pashnin and Andrei Loktionov. The game ended 1-0 for Lokomotiv, with the three stars awarded to Averin, Murygin (10 save shutout), and Kareyev (26 for 27 in saves).

Backtracking to Podolsk, where Vityaz welcomes Avangard Omsk. Oleg Shilin and Harri Sateri guard the cages. Omsk started in the first period with an Alexander Perezhogin goal, passed from Valentin Pyanov and Anton Burdasov. Avangard added on with a Burdasov goal in the second period, coming off of Pyanov and Ivan Fishchenko. Podolsk got on the board with an Alexei Kopeikin goal, assisted by Alexei Semenov and Mario Kempe on the power play. Omsk replied in the third period on an Ilya Mikheyev goal, with a lone helper by Denis Parshin. Vityaz pulled back on an unassisted Maxim Afinogenov power play goal. This only made it 3-2, with the three stars given to Burdasov, Pyanov, and Mikheyev.

Finally, Medvescak Zagreb brings in Spartak Moscow. Markus Svensson and Danny Taylor are in the creases. Moscow got going in the third period with a Lukas Radil power play goal, powered by Vyacheslav Leshchenko and Vadim Berdnikov. This proved enough for a 1-0 Spartak win, with the three stars awarded to Svensson (32 save shutout), Radil, and Taylor (29 for 30 in saves).

KHL 2016/17 - Day 11

There's four games on today, but the first one holds a special importance. We begin with...

Amur Khabarovsk hosting Kunlun Red Star Beijing. Andrei Makarov and Juha Metsola are in goal for this historic event. Beijing opened in the first period on a Sean Collins power play goal, powered by Tomas Marcinko and Martin Bakos. Khabarovsk tied it in the third period with a Kristian Kuusela goal, via Teemu Ramstedt on the power play. Kunlun Red Star regained the lead on a Tuukka Mantyla goal, helped along by Brett Bellemore. This stood for a 2-1 win, with the three stars going to Mantyla, Collins, and Makarov (32 for 33 in saves).

Out west, Ugra Khanty-Mansiysk welcomes Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Vasily Koshechkin and Alexander Sharychenkov are the goalies. Magnitogorsk started in the first period with a Sergei Tereshchenko goal, via Denis Kazionov and Denis Platonov. Khanty-Mansiysk tied it on a second period Pavel Varfolomeyev goal, assisted by Denis Gorbunov and Evgeny Lapenkov. Ugra took the lead with a Varfolomeyev goal in the third period, passed from Lapenkov and Gorbunov. This stood for a 2-1 win, with the three stars given to Sharychenkov (40 for 41 in saves), Varfolomeyev, and Lapenkov, while Gorbunov gets an honorable mention.

Further along, Severstal Cherepovets brings in Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk. Ivan Lisutin and Jakub Kovar draw the starts in goal. Nizhnekamsk got going in the third period with a Richard Gynge goal, coming off of Dan Sexton and Igor Polygalov. Neftekhimik iced it at 2-0 with an unassisted Sexton empty net goal. The three stars were Lisutin (32 save shutout), Sexton, and Gynge.

Finally, CSKA Moscow hosts Ak Bars Kazan. Emil Garipov and Ilya Sorokin are the masked men. Moscow struck first in the first period with an Alexander Popov power play goal, powered by Denis Denisov and Bogdan Kiselevich. Kazan tied it on a Justin Azevedo goal, courtesy of Vladimir Tkachyov. Ak Bars took the lead with a Mikhail Zhukov goal in the second period, made possible by Vasily Tokranov and Azevedo. CSKA tied it again in the third period on a Kirill Petrov goal, fueled by Denisov and Popov. Moscow took the lead with a Denisov power play goal, assisted by Maxim Mamin and Igor Ozhiganov. CSKA iced it at 4-2 with an unassisted empty net goal by Ivan Telegin. The three stars went to Denisov, Popov, and Azevedo.

NWSL Standalone: Boston Breakers v. Houston Dash - 8/31/16

Just before the schedule gets crazy over the next week or so, the Breakers and Dash meet up for a single game to get all the teams level on games played. Lydia Williams and Jami Kranich protect the nets. Find the game here. Morgan Brian of Houston intercepted a Louise Schillgard pass in the second minute. Brooke Elby of the Breakers blocked a Rachel Daly shot on a pass from Kealia Ohai on the counterattack. The Dash struck first in the third minute on an Ohai goal, assisted by Carli Lloyd, giving them a 1-0 lead. Cami Privett stole the ball and cleared it for Houston after Natasha Dowie lost control for Boston in the fourth minute. Whitney Engen of Boston broke up a pass from Ohai to Lloyd in the sixth minute. Christen Westphal of the Breakers booted a ball out of bounds for a corner kick for Houston, producing a shot. Kristie Mewis started the Boston counterattack in the seventh minute, but they didn't get a shot off. Dowie took a pass for Boston and shot wide left of the Dash keeper Williams' goal. Elby broke up a Houston attack by stealing Lloyd's pass for Brian in the ninth minute. Engen served a ball to Dowie in the tenth minute, but it went too long and the Breakers saw their attack end as Williams grabbed it. Westphal and Ghoutia Karchouni of Boston weren't able to produce a cross against Becca Moros and Denise O'Sullivan of Houston in the twelfth minute. Moros blocked and Privett cleared a shot from Mewis in the thirteenth minute. In the fourteenth minute, Moros found Daly in the box, and she beat Kranich, but Elby tracked it down and poked it away for a corner kick by Andressa. Mewis cleared the service safely away. Brian's centering pass to Ohai was cleared away by Engen in the sixteenth minute after a long spell of Houston possession. Ohai found Brian on the run in the seventeenth minute, and she made her way into the box before shooting wide right. Brittany Ratcliffe had a cross in the nineteenth minute for the Breakers, blocked by Ellie Brush of the Dash. Daly put a ball into the box, which Boston keeper Kranich had little trouble grabbing in the twenty-first minute. Lloyd ripped a shot in the twenty-third minute, saved by Kranich. A cross from Poliana found Ohai in the twenty-fifth minute, and she managed a deflected shot that Kranich covered. Karchouni and Engen managed to end a Houston possession as Lloyd tried to create a shot in the twenty-sixth minute. Privett headed out a Schillgard cross in the twenty-seventh minute. Mewis, Dowie, Westphal, and Schillgard all combined for a chance in the twenty-eighth minute, but Williams caught the curling ball for the save. The Breakers produced another chance as Mewis shot wide left after taking a pass from Elby, who has switched sides with the early substitution of Kylie Strom in for Westphal. Mewis nearly blocked a Williams clearance after Privett sent the ball a bit lazily back to the Houston keeper in the thirty-second minute. In the thirty-third minute, the Dash went up 2-0 as Daly flicked a ball up to Ohai, who ran from the midfield line and curled a ball into the net for her second goal of the game. Kassey Kallman was unable to catch up defensively. The Breakers saw Dowie head a ball wide right in the thirty-fourth minute. Dowie and Angela Salem both had shots blocked. In the thirty-sixth minute, Salem tried to go through most of the Houston defense before O'Sullivan stopped her progress cleanly for Houston. Privett kept the ball away from Dowie in the thirty-ninth minute, starting a Dash counterattack. Andressa cleared a Schillgard pass to Dowie in the fortieth minute as the Breakers build a bit more possession. Daly took a pass from Poliana in the forty-second minute, then dropping back to Lloyd, whose heavy touch forced Engen to make a play, and she got a bit of a bump but kept the ball away from Ohai. Kallman blocked a Daly cross after Andressa found the Houston forward, and Daly had danced around Kranich in the forty-fourth minute to create the chance. Ohai managed a cross after a Moros pass in stoppage time, and Lloyd sent it just wide right. The game went into halftime at 2-0 for the Dash. Impressing for Houston are the LB Moros, DM Brian, LW Lloyd, ACM O'Sullivan, RW Andressa, LF Ohai, and RF Daly, while the Breakers have seen their best play from CB Engen, DM Karchouni, RW Mewis, and RF Schillgard. In the forty-sixth minute, Ohai found Daly, who poked the ball just wide left on Houston's first chance of the second half. Brush headed a Schillgard cross in the forty-seventh minute. Mewis and Ratcliffe combined for another chance, shooting on goal, but Williams saved it and Brian cleared it for the Dash. Privett blocked Ratcliffe's forty-ninth minute cross to Mewis, denying another Breakers chance. On the counterattack, Lloyd had a shot blocked by Boston's defense. Ohai set up Andressa in the fiftieth minute for a shot, which went wide right. Privett intercepted Mewis' pass for Ratcliffe in the fifty-second minute. Ohai had a shot bounce off the post in the fifty-second minute, and then Strom blocked O'Sullivan's shot, and Ohai's was blocked by Engen before the Dash earned a corner kick. Andressa's set piece curled over the throng of players and out for a goal kick by Kranich. Houston had a series of passes in the fifty-fourth minute ending with a flubbed shot from Moros on a Lloyd pass. Strom won a corner kick for the Breakers off of Brian, and Karchouni's fifty-sixth minute service went long. Lloyd's pass for O'Sullivan in the fifty-eighth minute was just a bit behind as the game calms down a bit. Engen cleared an Ohai cross in the fifty-ninth minute. Karchouni found Dowie in the sixtieth minute, but Williams was up to the task in saving Dowie's shot. Ohai and Lloyd connected again, but the shot was saved by Kranich, after another strong Houston passing sequence. In the sixty-second minute, Lloyd buried a shot from way out, after receiving the pass from Andressa. The shot went over Kranich, making it 3-0 Houston. Lloyd took another shot in the sixty-sixth minute, firing low and wide left this time. In the sixty-eighth minute, Andressa sent a shot over the bar. Ohai and Brian each had efforts deflected in the sixty-ninth minute, by Kallman and Engen. Andressa and O'Sullivan created a chance, but Daly got caught offside, so the shot and save by Kranich were negated by the whistle. Kallman stole a pass from O'Sullivan to Daly in the seventy-fourth minute, even as it seems the Dash are just kicking the ball around now without much challenge from the Breakers. Daly got beat by Kranich on a high-bouncing ball in the box. Daly's cross was a bit too fast for Houston sub Janine Beckie to get on in the seventy-seventh minute. Engen cleared a cross from Ohai to Lloyd in the seventy-eighth minute. Dowie won a corner kick for the Breakers in the eightieth minute. Mewis served this in, but Poliana blocked it out. The Breakers earned a corner kick in the eighty-third minute after Poliana let Strom get behind her. Mewis took this set piece, but it was cleared by Houston. Salem cleared a cross from Chioma Ubogagu. Stephanie Verdoia of Boston blocked a shot by Amber Brooks in the eighty-fifth minute. Mewis managed a long shot that Williams saved off her leg. Brush poked a ball away from Dowie after a forward pass from the Breakers in the eighty-sixth minute. The game slowed down in the later minutes. Elby did well in the eighty-ninth minute to block Lloyd's cross and Ubogagu's settling attempt. Dowie fired a shot wide left in the ninetieth minute. Dowie got Boston on the board with a goal in stoppage time after a pass from Kyah Simon, cutting the score to 3-1. Dowie nearly had another, but she was offside, and Williams handled it anyway. Ratcliffe nearly had one for the Breakers, but Williams was there. The game ended at 3-1, with Ohai the Outsider Sports Woman of the Match. Dowie made a good impression in the second half for the Breakers.

KHL 2016/17 - Day 10

There's six games on the schedule for today, beginning with...

Amur Khabarovsk hosting Admiral Vladivostok. Ivan Nalimov and Juha Metsola are in goal. Khabarovsk started in the first period with a Kristian Kuusela goal, fueled by Kirill Kapustin. Vladivostok tied it on a Vladimir Tkachyov power play goal, powered by Andrei Sigaryov and Vadim Krasnoslobodtsev. Amur took the lead back in the second period with a Kapustin goal, assisted by Artyom Zub and Tomas Zohorna. Khabarovsk added on with a Jan Kolar power play goal, with assists provided by Teemu Ramstedt and Maxim Kondratyev. Igor Bobkov replaced Nalimov in goal. Amur took the win 3-1, with the three stars being Kapustin, Metsola (25 for 26 in saves), and Kolar.

West to Yekaterinburg, where Avtomobilist welcomes Traktor Chelyabinsk. Vasily Demchenko and Igor Ustinsky are in the blue paint. Chelyabinsk was first to score in the first period with a Yury Petrov goal, courtesy of Alexander Chernikov. Yekaterinburg tied it on a Dmitry Megalinsky goal in the second period, helped along by Tommi Kivisto and Alexei Simakov. The game went to overtime, where Traktor won on an unassisted Kirill Koltsov goal for a 2-1 final. The three stars were Koltsov, Petrov, and Demchenko (30 for 31 in saves).

Out to Slovakia, where Slovan Bratislava brings in the Sochi Leopards. Konstantin Barulin and Barry Brust are the veteran goalies. Bratislava opened in the first period with a power play goal by Patrik Luza, powered by Tomas Zigo. Slovan added on with an Ivan Svarny power play goal, guided in by Marek Viedensky. Sochi got on the board in the third period with a Ben Maxwell power play goal, made possible by Oscar Fantenberg and Eric O'Dell. Bratislava iced it at 3-1 with a Pavol Skalicky empty net goal, set up by Patrik Lusnak and Andrej Meszaros. The three stars went to Brust (38 for 39 in saves), Svarny, and Luza.

Backtracking to Moscow, where Dynamo hosts Metallurg Novokuznetsk. Mikhail Biryukov and Alexander Lazushin are the masked men. Moscow led off in the first period with a Yakov Rylov goal, assisted by Ansel Galimov and Artyom Fyodorov. Dynamo added on with a Mat Robinson power play goal, powered by Alexei Sopin. Moscow extended the lead as Alexei Tereshchenko scored, thanks to Maxim Karpov. Dynamo padded the lead with a shorthanded Semyon Kokuyov goal, set up by Rylov. Moscow kept going in the third period with a power play goal by Sopin, coming off of Alexander Rybakov and Alexander Osipov. The game ended at 5-0, with Rylov, Sopin, and Kokuyov earning the three stars.

Further along, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl welcomes Avangard Omsk. Dominik Furch and Alexander Sudnitsin guard the cages. Omsk got going in the second period with an Alexander Kucheryavenko goal, coming off of Erik Gustafsson and Andrei Kuteikin on the power play. Yaroslavl tied it with a Staffan Kronwall goal, assisted by Brandon Kozun on the power play. Lokomotiv took the lead in the third period with a Patrik Hersley goal, via Kozun and Andrei Loktionov on the power play. Avangard tied it again with an Alexander Perezhogin goal, guided in by Gustafsson and Kuteikin. Yaroslavl won 3-2 with a Yegor Korshkov goal in overtime, going in unassisted. The three stars belonged to Kozun, Gustafsson, and Kuteikin.

Finally, Medvescak Zagreb brings in Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. Ilya Proskuryakov faces a lesser foe in Niko Hovinen in goal. Nizhny Novgorod began in the first period with an Evgeny Grachyov goal, going in unassisted. Torpedo added on with an Evgeny Mozer goal, helped along by Vladimir Galuzin and Alexei Potapov. Nizhny Novgorod extended the lead on a power play goal by Maxim Osipov, powered by Ivan Vishnevsky and Galuzin. Torpedo padded the lead as Sam Lofquist scored, thanks to Galuzin, who got a sock trick, and Potapov. Zagreb got on the board with a power play goal by Colby Genoway, via Derek Smith and Francis Pare. Nizhny Novgorod replied in the third period with a Dmitry Semin goal, with a lone assist by Galuzin. Torpedo struck again on a Grachyov goal, with helpers from Kirill Urakov and Osipov. The game ended 6-1, with the three stars going to Galuzin, Grachyov, and Osipov, while Potapov gets an honorable mention.

KHL 2016/17 - Day 9

Only four games for today, beginning with...

Ugra Khanty-Mansiysk hosting Salavat Yulaev Ufa. Niklas Svedberg and Vladislav Fokin protect the nets. Khanty-Mansiysk got going with a Pavel Medvedev power play goal in the second period, powered by Roman Lyuduchin. Ufa tied it on a power play goal by Zakhar Arzamastsev, courtesy of Anton Lazarov and Kirill Kaprizov. Ugra took the lead back with another Medvedev goal, assisted by Lyuduchin. Salavat Yulaev went ahead in the third period with an Igor Grigorenko goal, guided in by Andreas Engqvist and Sami Lepisto. Ufa took the lead on a Denis Kulyash goal, via Evgeny Bodrov. This stood for a 3-2 win, with the three stars being Medvedev, Kulyash, and Lyuduchin.

Next up, Severstal Cherepovets welcomes Lada Togliatti. Ilya Ezhov and Jakub Kovar man the creases. Togliatti led off in the first period with a Georgy Belousov goal, assisted by Anton Shenfeld and Viktor Komarov. Lada added on with another Belousov goal, made possible by Shenfeld and Dmitry Sinitsyn. Togliatti extended the lead in the second period as Alexander Bumagin scored, thanks to Nikita Filatov and Mikael Johansson. Cherepovets got on the board with a Dmitry Kagarlitsky goal, with a lone assist by Evgeny Mons. Severstal tied it with a Mons goal, passed from Kagarlitsky. Cherepovets tied it with Kagarlitsky's second goal of the game, fueled by Clay Wilson and Mons. The tie went to a shootout, where two goals from Maxim Trunyov and one more from Daniil Vovchenko weren't enough for Severstal, as Lada's Filatov scored three times before Belousov ended the game with his tally for a 4-3 win. The three stars went to Belousov, Kagarlitsky, and Filatov, while Mons and Shenfeld get the honorable mentions.

Into Moscow, where CSKA brings in Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk. Ville Kolppanen is mismatched with Viktor Fasth in goal. Moscow dented the scoreboard in the second period with an Artyom Blazhiyevsky goal, assisted by Igor Ozhiganov. CSKA added on with a Bud Holloway power play goal, powered by Jonas Enlund and Kirill Petrov. Moscow extended the lead as Holloway scored again, thanks to Petrov and Andrei Svetlakov on the power play. CSKA padded the lead with a Denis Denisov goal in the third period, with a lone assist by Bogdan Kiselevich. Nizhnekamsk got on the board with an Igor Polygalov goal, coming off of Andrei Sergeyev and Dmitry Makarov. This only made it 4-1, the final, with the three stars going to Holloway, Petrov, and Fasth (26 for 27 in saves).

Finally, SKA St. Petersburg hosts Ak Bars Kazan. Emil Garipov and Igor Shestyorkin draw the starts in goal. St. Petersburg began with a first period goal by Vadim Shipachyov, assisted by Evgeny Dadonov and Nikita Gusev. Kazan tied it on a Jiri Sekac power play goal, powered by Justin Azevedo and Vasily Tokranov. Ak Bars took the lead with a Tokranov goal, fueled by Anton Glinkin and Atte Ohtamaa. Kazan added on with an Andrei Popov goal, guided in by Glinkin and Ohtamaa on the power play. Ak Bars extended the lead as Vladimit Tkachyov scored a power play goal, with the help of Roman Abrosimov and Artyom Lukoyanov. Evgeny Ivannikov took over for Shestyorkin in goal. Kazan padded the lead on a Maxim Lazarev goal in the second period, with helpers from Alexander Svitov and Dmitry Obukhov. SKA got one back with a Sergei Shirokov power play goal, helped along by Pavel Datsyuk and Ilya Kovalchuk. St. Petersburg got closer with a Gusev power play goal, coming off of Maxim Chudinov and Dadonov. SKA chipped closer with a third period power play goal by Datsyuk, made possible by Shirokov and Kovalchuk. St. Petersburg tied it as Datsyuk scored with five seconds left on the clock, thanks to Vyacheslav Voynov and Kovalchuk, the latter getting a sock trick. In the shootout, Gusev was topped by Tkachyov and Lukoyanov, giving Ak Bars a thrilling 6-5 win. The three stars were awarded to Lukoyanov, Kovalchuk, and Datsyuk, while Gusev, Tokranov, Glinkin, Ohtamaa, Shirokov, Dadonov, and Tkachyov get honorable mentions.

KHL 2016/17 - Day 8

Just five games today in a calm part of the schedule to end August. We begin with...

Amur Khabarovsk hosting Vityaz Podolsk. Harri Sateri and Alexander Pechursky are in the blue paint. Khabarovsk opened in the first period with a Jan Kolar goal, via Teemu Ramstedt and Tomas Zohorna. Podolsk tied it on an unassisted Maxim Afinogenov power play goal. Vityaz took the lead in the second period with a Miro Aaltonen goal, passed from Mario Kempe. Podolsk added on with a third period goal from Alexei Kopeikin, courtesy of Nikita Vyglazov and Alexei Makeyev. This made it 3-1, the final, with the three stars given to Sateri (33 for 34 in saves), Aaltonen, and Kopeikin.

Next up, Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg welcomes Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Vasily Koshechkin and Vladimir Sokhatsky are the goalies. Yekaterinburg got going with a Rok Ticar goal in the third period, assisted by Evgeny Chesalin and Andrei Alexeyev. Avtomobilist added on with an Anatoly Golyshev power play goal, powered by Pavel Turbin. This made it a 2-0 final, with the three stars awarded to Sokhatsky (28 save shutout), Ticar, and Golyshev.

Further west, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hosts Dynamo Moscow. Alexander Lazushin and Alexei Murygin are the masked men. Moscow started in the first period with an Artyom Fyodorov goal, guided in by Juuso Hietanen. Yaroslavl tied it on a Brandon Kozun goal, fueled by Maxime Talbot and Mikhail Pashnin. Dynamo took the lead back in the second period on a Semyon Kokuyov goal, coming off of Alexander Rybakov and Mat Robinson. Moscow added on with a Daniil Tarasov goal, assisted by Ilya Nikulin and Rybakov. Lokomotiv got one back with a Talbot goal in the third period, with helpers from Rushan Rafikov and Andrei Loktionov. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars given to Tarasov, Rybakov, and Talbot.

Out in Slovakia, Slovan Bratislava bring in Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. Ivan Kasutin and Justin Pogge are between the pipes. Nizhny Novgorod led off in the first period with a Kirill Rasskazov goal, made possible by Evgeny Mozer. Bratislava tied it on an Ivan Svarny goal in the second period, helped along by Jeff Taffe. Torpedo took the lead back on a Kaspars Daugavins goal, via Vladimir Galuzin and John Norman. Nizhny Novgorod added on with a Fredrik Pettersson power play goal, going in unassisted. Slovan got one back on a Vaclav Nedorost goal, fueled by Andrej Meszaros in the third period. Bratislava tied it on a Ziga Jeglic goal, guided in by Nedorost and Marek Viedensky. Slovan took the lead with a Jakub Valsky goal, with helpers from Patrik Luza and Tomas Kubalik. Bratislava extended the lead as Taffe scored a power play goal, thanks to Meszaros. Slovan padded the lead with a Nick Plastino power play goal, with a lone assist by Jonathan Cheechoo. Torpedo got one back with an Evgeny Grachyov goal, helped along by Kirill Urakov and Vyacheslav Kulyomin. Bratislava iced it at 7-4 with a Meszaros empty net goal, set up by Viedensky while shorthanded. The three stars went to Taffe, Meszaros, and Nedorost, while Viedensky gets an honorable mention.

Finally, Medvescak Zagreb hosts the Sochi Leopards. Dmitry Shikin and Danny Taylor play goal. Sochi began in the first period with a power play goal by Ilya Krikunov, powered by Andre Petersson and Igor Ignatushkin. Zagreb tied it in the second period with a Mark Katic goal, helped along by Goran Bezina and Bobby Butler. Medvescak took the lead with a Colby Genoway goal, assisted by Francis Pare and Derek Smith. The Leopards retied it on a Ben Maxwell power play goal, courtesy of Petersson and Oscar Fantenberg in the third period. Zagreb won 3-2 with a Shaone Morrisonn goal, coming off of Brandon McMillan and Edwin Hedberg in overtime. The three stars went to Morrisonn, Petersson, and Genoway.

Major League Soccer 2016 Week 25

The weekend is full of action for MLS. We begin with one Friday game in...

Salt Lake, as Real hosts the Colorado Rapids in the Rocky Mountain Derby. Tim Howard and Nick Rimando are the American goalies. Colorado opened in the fifth minute with a Shkelzen Gashi goal. Salt Lake tied it in the thirty-ninth minute with a Yura Movsisyan goal, assisted by Demar Phillips. Real took the lead with a Movsisyan goal in the forty-eighth minute, made possible by Plata. The Rapids saw yellow cards for Dillon Powers in the sixtieth minute, Marc Burch in the eighty-fourth minute, and Howard in stoppage time, the first and third for fouls and the second for dissent. The game ended at 2-1, with Movsisyan named man of the match for his brace.

On Saturday, DC United welcomed Chicago Fire in the first of six games. Sean Johnson and Bill Hamid are the experienced goalies. Jared Jeffrey of DC took a yellow card in the nineteenth minute for his foul. United struck first in the twenty-fifth minute on a Luciano Acosta goal, assisted by Marcelo Sarvas and Patrick Nyarko. Michael de Leeuw tied it in the thirty-first minute with his goal for Chicago. Khaly Thiam of the Fire took a red card for a foul and abusive language in the thirty-fourth minute, putting them at ten men. Johan Kappelhof of Chicago took a yellow card in the thirty-sixth minute for his foul. DC took the lead back in the fortieth minute with a Patrick Mullins goal, coming off of Nyarko. United added on with a Mullins goal in first half stoppage time, passed from Acosta. The Fire chipped back with a goal a minute later from Razvan Cocis, courtesy of de Leeuw and Kappelhof. de Leeuw of Chicago had a yellow card for a forty-seventh minute foul. DC extended the lead in the fifty-first minute on a Nyarko goal, with assists from Steve Birnbaum and Lloyd Sam. United padded the lead as Mullins finished his hat trick, thanks to Sean Franklin and Acosta in the seventy-fourth minute. DC refused to stop, scoring again in the eighty-ninth minute on a Nick DeLeon goal set up by Acosta. The game mercifully ended at 6-2, with the man of the match being Mullins for his hat trick in a thorough victory for the hosts.

Over to Philadelphia, where the Union bring in Sporting Kansas City. Alec Kann and Andre Blake play goal. Kansas City saw yellow cards in the twentieth minute for Jimmy Medranda's foul and Roger Espinoza's dissent. Philadelphia's Warren Creavalle took a yellow card for a fifty-first minute foul. In the fifty-ninth minute, Medranda took a second yellow card for a foul, putting Sporting down to ten men. The Union got going in the sixty-seventh minute on a Roland Alberg goal, set up by Fabinho. Espinoza of Kansas City took a straight red card for his eighty-seventh minute foul, putting his team down to nine men. Philadelphia added on with a stoppage time goal from Tranquillo Barnetta, assisted by Alberg. The Union's Alejandro Bedoya received a yellow card a minute later for a foul. The game ended at 2-0, with Alberg the man of the match for his goal and assist.

Along to Columbus, where the Crew SC host the San Jose Earthquakes. David Bingham and Steve Clark are the keepers. Columbus started in the thirty-second minute on an Ethan Finlay goal, set up by Justin Meram and Nicolai Naess. Bingham exited the match at halftime, replaced by Andrew Tarbell. Darwin Ceren of San Jose had a yellow card for a sixty-fifth minute foul. The Crew added on in the eighty-fourth minute with a Meram penalty kick goal. This made it 2-0, the final, with the man of the match being Meram for his goal and assist.

Up in Canada, Toronto FC welcomes the Montreal Impact. Evan Bush and Alex Bono are set to start in goal. Montreal went down to ten men in the forty-third minute when Calum Mallace took a straight red card for violent conduct. Toronto's Marco Delgado received a yellow card in the forty-fourth minute for his foul. Toronto saw a yellow card for a forty-eighth minute Eriq Zavaleta foul. Jonathan Osorio of Toronto took a yellow card for a foul in the seventieth minute. The Impact dented the scoreboard on an Ignacio Piatti goal in the seventy-third minute, made possible by Dominic Oduro and Matteo Mancosu. Montreal saw yellow cards for the keeper Bush in the seventy-third minute for time wasting, and for fouls by Mancosu in the eighty-first minute and Kyle Bekker in stoppage time. Still, the Impact won 1-0, with the man of the match being Piatti for his winner.

Down in Texas, the Houston Dynamo bring in FC Dallas. Chris Seitz and Joe Willis are between the posts. Houston was first to score in the nineteenth minute on an Alex goal, assisted by Boniek Garcia. Dallas tied it with a fifty-ninth minute Mauro Diaz penalty kick goal. Dallas took the lead on a sixtieth minute goal by Michael Barrios, coming off Maynor Figueroa. Dallas added on with a Barrios goal in the seventy-ninth minute, via Tesho Akindele. The Dynamo's Erick Torres had a yellow card for a foul in stoppage time. The game ended at 3-1, with Barrios the man of the match for his brace.

Finally, the Los Angeles Galaxy host the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. David Ousted and Brian Rowe guard the woodwork. Vancouver took a yellow card for Fraser Aird in the twenty-seventh minute for his foul. Los Angeles took a yellow card for a fifty-third minute foul by Robbie Rogers. The game ended at 0-0. The man of the match was Ousted for his three-save clean sheet.

On Sunday, the first of three games sees the New York Red Bulls welcome the New England Revolution. Brad Knighton is mismatched with Luis Robles in goal. New York drew first blood in the fifty-fifth minute on a Bradley Wright-Phillips goal. New England had yellow cards for Gershon Koffie in the seventy-first minute and Kelyn Rowe in the eighty-fifth minute. Gonzalo Veron of the Red Bulls took a yellow card for his foul in stoppage time. Four minutes later, the Revolution's Juan Agudelo and New York's Robles each took yellow cards for fouls. The game ended at 1-0, with Wright-Phillips the man of the match for his winner.

Out west, the Portland Timbers bring in the Seattle Sounders FC. Stefan Frei and Jake Gleeson are the gloved men. Portland led off in the sixteenth minute with a goal by Vytautas Andriuskevicius, assisted by Jack Jewsbury. The Timbers added on in the twenty-first minute with a Fanendo Adi goal. Seattle's Nicolas Lodeiro took a yellow card for a foul in the twenty-sixth minute. Portland extended the lead as Lucas Melano scored in the twenty-ninth minute, thanks to Diego Chara and Diego Valeri. The Timbers padded the lead on a Steven Taylor goal in the forty-fourth minute, courtesy of Valeri. Andreas Ivanschitz of the Sounders had a yellow card for a foul in first half stoppage time. Seattle got on the board in the forty-seventh minute with an Ivanschitz goal, coming off of Lodeiro. The Sounders got closer with a fifty-first minute Jordan Morris goal, fueled by Lodeiro and Ivanschitz. In the seventy-eighth minute, Seattle's Joevin Jones took a yellow card for a foul. The Sounders' Nelson Valdez had a yellow card in second half stoppage time for dissent. The game ended at 4-2, with the man of the match being Melano for his game-winner.

Finally, the week ends with Orlando City SC hosting New York City FC. Josh Saunders and Joe Bendik protect the nets. Orlando City began in the thirty-second minute with a goal by Kaka. Maxine Chanot of New York City took a yellow card for a fifty-fourth minute foul. In the fifty-fifth minute, New York City tied it on a Steven Mendoza goal. In the fifty-ninth minute, Thomas McNamara of New York City received a yellow card for his foul. Orlando City retook the lead with a Kaka penalty kick goal in the sixty-third minute. Orlando City's Antonio Nocerino took a yellow card for delaying the restart of play in the eightieth minute. The game ended at 2-1, with the man of the match being Kaka for his brace.

NWSL Week 16

The top-flight women's soccer league in the US is back, ready to put the sour taste of the Olympics away with the final push for the club playoffs. We begin the five-game weekend with Friday's match, featuring...

The Orlando Pride hosting the Washington Spirit. Kelsey Wys and Ashlyn Harris are in goal. Here's the game.Washington won a corner kick in the first minute as Cali Farquharson's cross was blocked out of bounds. Christine Nairn's service went to Joanna Lohman, who headed it wide left off a defender. The next corner kick saw Nairn try short and Orlando's Kaylyn Kyle cleared it. Things settled down mostly after this early Spirit attack. Kyle surrendered another corner kick from the Pride, poking it away from Farquharson. Nairn's service in the sixth minute was cleared by Maddy Evans initially and the Pride collectively kept the ball from danger. Cheyna Williams made an attack in the seventh minute for Washington, with Kyle doing enough to disrupt her. Jasmyne Spencer won a ball from Ali Krieger near the end line, and then passed in for Alex Morgan, who laid off for Kristen Edmonds, but she shot over the bar for the Pride. Dunn and Williams tried to combine in the twelfth minute, but it didn't quite work out for Washington. Toni Pressley took an Orlando free kick in the fourteenth minute, which Wys mishandled and Morgan nearly got a poke on before Wys recovered to save the Spirit. Nairn made a steal in the seventeenth minute, going to Farquharson, who tried to pick out Dunn. Krieger had a free kick for the Spirit in the nineteenth minute, finding Farquharson, whose first shot was blocked and her second shot sailed wide left. Kyle and Dani Weatherholt combined to clear a Lohman shot in the twentieth minute. Edmonds tried a shot but whiffed on it, and Lohman made the steal for the Spirit. Cami Levin shut down Williams on her twenty-third minute attack for Washington. Dydasco and Estelle Johnson combined for Washington to block and clear a cross attempt by the Pride's Sam Witteman. Weatherholt's redirected cross in the twenty-seventh minute found Morgan, who headed it on goal and forced Wys into a big save. Edmonds took the corner kick for Orlando in the twenty-seventh minute, and it trickled out to Levin eventually, who shot wide left. Morgan challenged Wys pretty hard in the twenty-eighth minute, but the Washington keeper did enough to get the ball away. Pressley of the Pride fouled Washington's Farquharson in the twenty-ninth minute, earning a yellow card. Nairn's free kick went for goal but was wide right. Edmonds did a free kick in the thirty-second minute for Orlando, cleared immediately by Williams. Harris had to make a save in the thirty-third minute on a hard shot from Nairn. Krieger took a yellow card for a thirty-fourth minute foul on Spencer. Williams couldn't get around Kyle on a Dunn pass in the thirty-sixth minute. Dydasco danced around Weatherholt in the thirty-sixth minute, finding Williams, who also made a move before roofing a shot and giving Washington a 1-0 lead. Nairn's thirty-ninth minute free kick was easily cleared by Kyle of the Pride. Morgan's forty-first minute cross was picked up by Wys after a hop too long for Spencer. Witteman's forty-third minute long ball for Morgan caught the Pride striker offside. Krieger's pass in stoppage time was too much for Dunn to handle, and Harris got there first. The game went into halftime at 1-0, with the best players for the Spirit being LB Dydasco, RB Krieger, LW Nairn, RW Lohman, LF Farquharson, and RF Williams. The Pride's top players are CB Kyle, DM Evans, LW Spencer, and striker Morgan. Dunn tried a cross in the forty-eighth minute a bit too long for any Spirit teammate, allowing Orlando's Levin to clear it. Morgan found Spencer in the fiftieth minute as Orlando started to mount an attack, but no shooting chance occurred. Nairn blocked an Evans pass into the box in the fifty-second minute. The Spirit made it 2-0 with a Nairn goal in the fifty-fifth minute, coming on a passing sequence from Katie Stengel and Williams. In the fifty-ninth minute, Witteman and Morgan connected for a chance, which landed on the top of Wys' net. Dunn, Lohman, and Stengel combined for a chance that forced Harris into a save at her post in the sixty-first minute. Nairn's corner kick didn't cause any trouble. Dunn got fouled by Witteman and Weatherholt just outside the box, giving Nairn a free kick for the Spirit in the sixty-third minute. Stengel managed to direct it just wide left of goal. Evans chipped a shot in the sixty-fourth minute, going wide left of Wys' goal. Whitney Church blocked a Morgan shot in the sixty-eighth minute after Edmonds and Spencer set up shop for the Pride in the box of Washington. Edmonds fed Spencer for a sixty-ninth minute shot that got deflected by Dydasco for an Orlando corner kick. Edmonds' service curled onto the top of the goal. In the seventy-first minute, Levin took a pass from Spencer and crossed it in for Sarah Hagen, and the sub buried it to cut the score to 2-1 on the Pride's first goal of the night. Krieger blocked a Spencer run in the box in the seventy-second minute as Orlando seems to have more confidence. Tori Huster took a shot for Washington that Harris dove to save. Francisca Ordega managed a shot in the seventy-fourth minute for the Spirit. Ordega went around Witteman and tried a cross in the seventy-sixth minute, but she hit the outside netting. Williams had a shot in the seventy-ninth minute go just wide right after she got around Pressley. Kyle poked the ball away from Stengel in the eighty-second minute, giving Washington a corner kick. This didn't produce anything of danger. In the eighty-third minute, Morgan received a ball over the top and shot wide right. Ordega tried a cutback to Stengel in the eighty-fifth minute, which Orlando's Monica broke up. Dydasco blocked a Spencer cross in the eighty-sixth minute. Alyssa Kleiner ripped a shot wide left and low in the eighty-seventh minute for the Spirit. Ordega tried to pick out Kleiner in the eighty-ninth minute, but Levin proved disruptive. Jamia Fields managed a shot in the ninetieth minute for the Pride, caught by Wys for the save. Levin had a cross floated in to Wys' arms. The game ended at 2-1, with Williams the Outsider Sports Woman of the Match. Also impressing was the RB Levin.

On Saturday, the first of three games saw the Seattle Reign FC welcome the Portland Thorns FC in the first of two Cascadia clashes for the cities this weekend (see my MLS post tomorrow for Sounders v. Timbers). Michelle Betos and Haley Kopmeyer protect the nets. You can find the game here. Merritt Mathias finally cleared a third minute Portland attack after Kopmeyer was forced into a save. Jess Fishlock flipped a ball in for Seattle, but it went long in the fourth minute. In the fifth minute, Fishlock's pass for Mathias caught the Reign's forward offside. Beverly Yanez and Rumi Utsugi couldn't quite connect in the seventh minute for Seattle, but they did produce a corner kick. Nahomi Kawasumi served it in, and Kim Little had a couple of chances blocked. Manon Melis saw her shot deflected by Katherine Reynolds to create another corner kick in the eighth minute. The shot from Melis went high and wide. Nadia Nadim had a run in the eleventh minute, taking a pass from the midfield and fired it on goal, which Kopmeyer saved. Melis won a corner kick off of Reynolds in the fourteenth minute. Kawasumi went straight at goal, caught by Betos. Little put a ball in the box in the sixteenth minute, which Betos bobbled. Kawasumi found it for the Reign, but the Thorns keeper recovered to stop the play. Little and Fishlock combined in the nineteenth minute for a shot, which hooked wide right for Seattle. Fishlock went long in the twenty-second minute, but Reynolds broke it up before Yanez could get there, disrupting a solid Seattle attack. Little had a shot on the next attack that Betos handled well for Portland. The Thorns' Nadim tried to find Mallory Weber, but Lauren Barnes of the Reign broke up the play in the twenty-fourth minute. Mathias had a shot through Meghan Klingenberg of Portland in the twenty-fifth minute, saved by Betos. Kendall Fletcher of Seattle broke up Nadim's pass for Tobin Heath as the Thorns have built a few more attacks. In the twenty-seventh minute, the Reign went up 1-0 on a Melis goal, passed from Kawasumi. Fletcher and Yanez cleared a twenty-ninth minute free kick from Heath. Kawasumi won a corner kick in the thirty-third minute off of Reynolds. She took it herself for Seattle, going for Fletcher, whose header was blocked away and eventually cleared by Portland. Fishlock found Kawasumi out wide in the thirty-seventh minute, which Betos sent away. Kawasumi's corner kick didn't produce a shot opportunity, but the Reign kept it in for awhile with heavy pressure. Heath took a pass from Lindsey Horan in the fortieth minute after the Thorns built an attack deep in Reign territory, but Heath's shot was wide right. Heath had another try through Fletcher's leg that Kopmeyer saved in the forty-first minute. Sonnett headed a Little pass away for a counterattack by Seattle ending without a shooting chance. Little and Rapinoe continue to build their chemistry back up to kill time against the Thorns. Heath's free kick in stoppage time found Allie Long, who flicked it into the top left corner over Kopmeyer. Yanez turned a headed from a Mathias throw-in on goal, which Betos caught. Heath took a corner kick halfway into the stoppage time. Kopmeyer blocked the first one out for another corner kick. Heath served it in again, but Fishlock cleared it. Utsugi cleared a Nadim cross. On the Seattle counterattack, Fishlock found Rapinoe, who buried it in the side netting for a goal, making it 3-1 for the Reign. Christen Press found Stephanie McCaffrey on the next Red Stars attack, which Sky Blue's Christie Rampone disrupted before a good shot could occur. Casey Short and Sam Johnson nearly set up Sam Kerr of Sky Blue for a chance after some lazy passing between the Chicago defenders. The game has seen quick transitions and giveaways in the midfield. Kerr and Erica Skroski broke up a Short possession for Chicago after a pass from Cara Walls, forcing the Red Stars to regroup against the stingy Sky Blue defense. Julie Johnston started a Chicago attack with a long ball for Press in the eleventh minute, and then McCaffrey passed back to Walls, who shot on goal and Stanley saved it for Sky Blue. Press saw her shot in the twelfth minute blocked by Sarah Killion after Walls and Vanessa DiBernardo strung passes together. The Red Stars have had stronger offense so far. Taylor Lytle of Sky Blue found Kerr in the fifteenth minute, but the shot in was picked up by Naeher with ease. McCaffrey lined a shot on goal that Stanley saved on the other side as Chicago quickly made an attack. Johnson broke up a Skroski cross in the seventeenth minute as Sky Blue pushed forward briefly. Natasha Kai put some pressure on Johnston and Naeher, but the Red Stars managed to clear it just in time. Press' eighteenth minute shot was blocked out for a corner kick. DiBernardo took this one for Johnston, but Kai got it first. Press had a cross for Walls, who shot it off of Rampone for another corner kick in the nineteenth minute. DiBernardo served it on top of the net as everyone in the box crashed near the goal. Kristin Grubka broke up a pass from DiBernardo to Walls in the twentieth minute. Kerr won a corner kick off of Short for Sky Blue in the twenty-first minute. Leah Galton served it for Raquel Rodriguez, which Naeher scooped up. Lytle's through ball for Kai didn't connect as Johnston shielded the ball to allow Naeher to get there. Kai had a shot in the thirtieth minute, saved by Naeher. In the thirty-first minute, McCaffrey scored from a very sharp angle after getting around Rampone, giving Chicago a 1-0 lead. Kerr couldn't control a pass from Skroski in the thirty-second minute. Kai tracked down a ball from Galton, and served up a ball for Rodriguez, whose deflected shot hit the side netting. Sky Blue earned a corner kick, taken by Galton. Lytle tried a shot that got blocked as Chicago cleared and countered from there. Short's thirty-sixth minute cross was blocked out for a corner kick by Sky Blue's Skroski. DiBernardo's service was cleared by Grubka, and then Press shot high. Kerr, Lytle, and Killion all tried to make things happen, but Johnston and DiBernardo blocked for the Red Stars. Killion had a shot saved by Naeher and cleared off the line by Gilliland, followed by Gilliland blocking a Killion header off of a Kai flick, and Kerr put the ball in the net, but it was waved off. The score remained at 1-0 for the Red Stars after a crazy flurry in the thirty-ninth minute. DiBernardo's fortieth minute shot went over Stanley's goal. Simon surrendered a corner kick after poking the ball off McCaffrey's foot during her run. DiBernardo served in for Johnston in the forty-second minute, and Press' shot was saved by Stanley. McCaffrey's cross in for DiBernardo, and the subsequent centering pass was cleared by Grubka in the forty-fourth minute. Skroski just blocked a big run and shooting chance from Sofia Huerta. The game went into halftime at 1-0, with the Red Stars' top performances from GK Naeher, RB Gilliland, CB Johnston, DM DiBernardo, RF McCaffrey, and LF Press. Sky Blue's best players have been RB Skroski, CB Grubka, DM Rodriguez, RW Kerr, and LW Lytle. McCaffrey couldn't get around both Skroski and Grubka in the forty-seventh minute. Galton blocked a Gilliland cross in the fiftieth minute. A second effort for Gilliland went too long under pressure from Kelley O'Hara. Galton sent a fifty-first minute cross into Kai, who headed it off the bar and her second try went over the bar, with Johnson defending. Kerr battled well and won against Short in the fifty-third minute on another Red Stars attack. Press had some nifty footwork in the box, but there was a foul negating her efforts in the fifty-fifth minute. Galton won a corner kick off of Gilliland in the fifty-ninth minute for Sky Blue. O'Hara took the set piece short and got it back, but Naeher handled the cross. Lytle's long sixtieth minute shot went wide left and a bit low. Rampone held off a run by Walls on a McCaffrey pass to give Sky Blue possession in the sixty-first minute. Johnston blocked a Lytle cross and then a shot from Kerr went wide left. O'Hara had a dangerous cross poked by Short toward her own goal, and Naeher reacted quickly to avoid friendly fire. Kerr saw a pair of crosses blocked, the latter by Danielle Colaprico of the Red Stars. Sky Blue had shaky defense in the sixty-sixth minute on bad plays by Stanley and O'Hara, but Press failed to release a shot for Chicago. Press did well in the sixty-ninth minute to set up DiBernardo for a big shot that grazed the top of the net. Press and DiBernardo combined again in the seventy-first minute, saved by Stanley. DiBernardo took the corner kick, cleared by Galton to Maya Hayes of Sky Blue on the counterattack. Press made good moves around Killion but couldn't pass around Grubka on a central run in the seventy-second minute. Skroski broke up DiBernardo's pass for Walls in the seventy-third minute. A giveaway from Stanley led to DiBernardo setting up Press for the goal, making it 2-0 for the Red Stars. Press had a cross blocked in the seventy-eighth minute. Alyssa Mautz won a corner kick off of Skroski in the seventy-ninth minute. DiBernardo went for Gilliland, who bounced it down to Huerta, who ripped it home for a 3-0 Chicago lead in the eightieth minute. O'Hara passed to Kerr in the eighty-first minute, who shot it high over the bar. An eighty-third minute O'Hara free kick went wide right. Johnston made a big break in the eighty-fifth minute to keep the ball away from Kerr. Press ran right at Grubka and Rampone in the eighty-sixth minute, firing a shot that Stanley had to parry away for a corner kick. Houston answered with Janine Beckie crossing to Kealia Ohai, and she laid it off for Morgan Brian, who shot it over the bar in the second minute. Abby Erceg of the Flash blocked an Andressa shot for the Dash in the third minute after Ohai's pass. Western New York's Lynn Williams passed over for Jessica McDonald in the fourth minute, but she flubbed the shot and Lydia Williams saved it for Houston. Samantha Mewis found Lynn Williams in the sixth minute for a shot, but Lydia Williams saved it. Cari Roccaro and Becca Moros combined to clear a cross from Doniak in the twelfth minute. Mewis intercepted a passing sequence between Brian and Denise O'Sullivan. On the other side, Lynn Williams lost the ball to Houston's Cami Privett. Doniak won a corner kick off of Moros in the nineteenth minute for Western New York. Jaelene Hinkle took the set piece, going long and tracked down but cleared poorly by Ohai. McCall Zerboni nearly had a shot on a long throw from McDonald, but O'Sullivan defended well and produced a goal kick for the Dash. McDonald fired a shot high in the twenty-fourth minute. Roccaro and Privett again combined to clear a ball from the right wing of the Western New York formation. Zerboni couldn't pick out Doniak, with Roccaro and Moros pressuring the pass in the twenty-seventh minute. Houston struck first in the twenty-eighth minute, with a sequence starting with Brian, who found Ohai, and then it went back to Beckie off of Erceg, and O'Sullivan finished for a 1-0 lead. Moros' through ball to O'Sullivan was a bit long and D'Angelo grabbed it in the twenty-ninth minute. Roccaro outran Lynn Williams to get to Sanderson's long ball in the thirtieth minute. McDonald's long throw went for Erceg, who just missed pulling a shot off. Hinkle's free kick was caught by Lydia Williams in the thirty-second minute. Doniak won a corner kick in the thirty-third minute for Western New York. Hinkle served it in short for Sanderson, and the cross from the different angle didn't work out, getting the Flash caught offside. Mewis found McDonald, whose long run ended with a shot saved by Lydia Williams in the thirty-fifth minute. Lynn Williams took a ball on the right wing for the Flash, getting around Moros, and passing into the box, where McDonald left it for Sanderson, who buried it, tying the game at 1. Previously on the play, Ohai lost the ball to Doniak for the forward ball in the thirty-sixth minute. Privett headed out McDonald's long throw in the thirty-eighth minute. Mewis blocked Andressa's thirty-ninth minute free kick. Erceg shut down Beckie's crossing attempt in the fortieth minute. Ohai had a cross from the other side for the Dash, which Beckie headed well over the bar. Eddy won a battle with Brian in the fiftieth minute to keep the Dash midfielder from crossing the ball. Mewis had a long shot on goal that Lydia Williams saved, and Lynn Williams sent the shot wide right in the fifty-first minute. In the fifty-third minute, Ohai received a pass from Moros and made a long run to curl a ball into the net, giving Houston a 2-1 lead. O'Sullivan cleared a Mewis attempt in the fifty-fifth minute. Lynn Williams got a ball crossed in during the fifty-eighth minute for the Flash, finding Doniak, who scored on a practically open net to retie the game at 2. Mewis and Sanderson laid the foundation for the goal as Lynn Williams had the ball before the goal. Brian couldn't pick out Beckie in the sixtieth minute. Andressa ripped a shot in the sixty-first minute that D'Angelo had to save over the bar for a Houston corner kick. Privett headed the service wide left. Privett denied a McDonald cross in the sixty-second minute as the game has turned wide open. D'Angelo made a save on Ohai in the sixty-third minute after a cross from Poliana. The Flash got a corner kick on the other side, taken by Hinkle but cleared by Beckie of Houston. Dahlkemper blocked a cross from O'Sullivan to keep it away from Ohai. Andressa's free kick after a foul by Zerboni nearly found Ohai, but D'Angelo made the stop. Lydia Williams punched a Hinkle free kick away, ceding a corner kick in the seventieth minute. Hinkle took this one for Sanderson, who served in for Mewis, and her header was blocked and eventually cleared by Houston. Dahlkemper's seventy-third minute free kick was punched out by Lydia Williams. Erceg headed a second effort wide right. Beckie set up Rachel Daly for a seventy-fifth minute shot that went way over the bar. Poliana's seventy-sixth minute cross found Daly, but she sent it wide right under pressure from Eddy. Privett and O'Sullivan combined to stymie Mewis' big run into the Dash box. In the eightieth minute, Hinkle took a long shot that Lydia Williams palmed over the bar for a Western New York corner kick. Privett headed the service from Dahlkemper away in the eighty-first minute. Taylor Smith of the Flash ended a sequence beginning with McDonald's long throw after Sanderson and Lynn Williams had touches to keep the play alive. Mewis blocked a long-range effort from Brooks in the eighty-fourth minute. Smith, Williams, and Sanderson combined to try to find McDonald, but Poliana cleared it. In the eighty-fifth minute, the Flash got a corner kick, and Hinkle served it in. It landed for Janice Cayman on the other side of the field, and she was fouled by Daly, who took a yellow card for it. Sanderson took the free kick, but Lydia Williams punched it out. Daly set up Andressa for a shot in the eighty-seventh minute, but she sent it too far over the goal. Hinkle had a ninetieth minute corner kick, going short for Sanderson and then to Erceg. Louise Schillgard set up Ratcliffe for a sixth minute shot that went just over the bar on a fast break for Boston. Brooke Elby had another shot in quick succession, which Barnhart saved. Silva won a corner kick for Kansas City in the seventh minute. Heather O'Reilly served it in dangerously, but Boston cleared it. Mandy Laddish had a second effort blocked out by Natasha Dowie. Laddish found O'Reilly out wide, and she crossed in for Silva, who headed it wide right narrowly, a great chance for the Blues. Elby had a cross in the twenty-first minute just out of reach of Dowie and Schillgard. Ratcliffe received a pass from Angela Salem in the twenty-second minute, but her cross was picked off by Averbuch of Kansas City. Laddish found O'Reilly on a big run in the twenty-fourth minute, but the Kansas City midfielder shot it wide left one-on-one against Kranich. Groom had a shot off of an Averbuch pass in the twenty-fifth minute, but Kranich had no trouble stopping it for the Breakers. Boston finally got what they wanted on a Schoepfer goal in the thirty-eighth minute, firing a second shot after Lo'eau LaBonta blocked the first one. Groom had a big run into the box to take a pass from Brittany Taylor in the forty-first minute, but Groom's shot missed its target, and the follow-thru injured Whitney Engen of Boston a bit. Elby just broke up a pass from Laddish to O'Reilly in the forty-third minute, and managed to avoid giving up a corner kick as well. Dowie managed to dance around Averbuch in the forty-fifth minute, but Barnhart palmed the curling shot away for a corner kick for the Breakers. Barnhart then caught the Schillgard service. Laddish had a shot just over the bar after O'Reilly tracked the ball down in stoppage time. Silva went give-and-go with O'Reilly after a pass from Katie Bowen, but that shot also soared over the bar. Laddish's second effort caught O'Reilly offside. O'Reilly ripped a shot wide in the fifty-eighth minute for the Blues, who have organized quite a spell of possession. O'Reilly, Tymrak, and Laddish combined for a dangerous chance near Kranich's net, producing a corner kick in the fifty-ninth minute. O'Reilly served this one high, and Kranich punched out. McCarty had a deflected shot in the seventy-second minute that forced Kranich to make a play. Silva got fouled in the seventy-third minute, setting up the Blues for a good free kick. Taylor took this one, going for goal and shooting it high over the bar. Taylor's cross in the seventy-eighth minute found McCarty, who headed it off a Breakers defender after pressure from Averbuch kept the play alive for Kansas City. O'Reilly got a free kick in the seventy-ninth minute, but she served it too far. The Breakers made it 2-0 after Mewis ripped a shot off the bar, and the rebound fell to Dowie, who laid off for Mewis' second shot, which found the back of the net. O'Reilly had a big cross to Groom in the eighty-third minute, but the header went straight at Kranich. Caroline Kastor made a big play in the box for Kansas City, forcing Kranich into a diving stop in the eighty-seventh minute. Engen and King combined to disrupt a McCarty cross on another Blues attack. Taylor made a big run in the eighty-ninth minute, but got dispossessed by Kallman in the box. Engen blocked a Groom run in the ninetieth minute. Taylor's free kick in stoppage time went out of bounds off of a Breaker, creating a corner kick. O'Reilly's service was punched out by Kranich, and the Blues didn't get a second try on the play. The game ended at 2-0 for the Breakers. The DM Schoepfer earned the Outsider Sports Woman of the Match honors. Impressing in the second half were GK Kranich and RW sub Mewis for Boston and RB Taylor of Kansas City.

Just a single game today, with Lada Togliatti hosting Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk. Ivan Lisutin and Ilya Ezhov are in goal. Nizhnekamsk struck first with a first period power play goal by Ivan Lekomtsev, powered by Evgeny Ryasensky. Togliatti tied it on a Stanislav Bocharov goal in the second period, fueled by Gley Koryagin. Lada took the lead with a Denis Zernov goal, going in unassisted. Togliatti added on with a power play goal in the third period from Nikita Filatov, made possible by Yefim Gurkin and Mikael Johansson. This stood for a 3-1 win, with the three stars given to Zernov, Ezhov (27 for 28 in saves), and Filatov.
