NHL 2021-22 - Day 102

It's Hockey Day in Canada, so the games start early this Saturday. The first of ten is in...

Ottawa, as the Senators host the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Anton Forsberg man the nets. Anaheim led off in the first period with a Rickard Rakell goal, his ninth of the season, coming off of Josh Manson and Sam Steel. Ottawa tied it on a Tyler Ennis goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Lassi Thomson and Thomas Chabot. The Ducks took the lead in the third period with a Troy Terry goal, his twenty-fifth of the campaign, via Ryan Getzlaf. This made it 2-1, the final, with the three stars awarded to Gibson (44 for 45 in saves), Terry, and Rakell.

Stateside, the Philadelphia Flyers welcome the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Quick and Carter Hart are the goalies. Philadelphia began in the first period with a Gerry Mayhew goal, his third of the season, assisted by Rasmus Ristolainen and Morgan Frost. The Flyers added on in the second period with a Cam Atkinson goal, his sixteenth of the year, fueled by Claude Giroux. Los Angeles got on the board with a Viktor Arvidsson goal, his eleventh of the season, helped along by Sean Durzi and Phillip Danault. Philadelphia shot back on an Atkinson shorthanded and unassisted goal in the third period, his second of the game and seventeenth of the year. The Kings pulled back on an Arvidsson power play goal, his second of the game and twelfth of the season, powered by Arthur Kaliyev and Durzi. Los Angeles tied it on an Anze Kopitar goal, his fourteenth of the year, going in unassisted. The Flyers won 4-3 in overtime with a Scott Laughton goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Atkinson and Ivan Provorov. The three stars went to Atkinson, Arvidsson, and Durzi. 

Over in St. Louis, the Blues bring in the Winnipeg Jets. Eric Comrie and Ville Husso patrol the creases. St. Louis opened in the first period with a Vladimir Tarasenko power play goal, his fifteenth of the season, powered by Brayden Schenn and Justin Faulk. Winnipeg tied it on a Paul Stastny goal, his tenth of the year, going in unassisted. The Jets took the lead in the second period with a Kyle Connor goal, his twenty-fourth of the season, passed from Pierre-Luc Dubois. Winnipeg added on with a Nate Schmidt power play goal, his second of the year, with assists provided by Mark Scheifele and Connor. The Jets iced it at 4-1 with a Stastny empty net goal, his second of the game and eleventh of the campaign, set up by Neal Pionk. The three stars were handed to Stastny, Connor, and Comrie (28 for 29 in saves).

Down in Florida, the Panthers host the San Jose Sharks. James Reimer and Sergei Bobrovsky are the veterans in goal. San Jose started in the first period with a Tomas Hertl goal, his twenty-second of the season, coming off of Rudolfs Balcers. The Sharks added on with a Jonathan Dahlen power play goal, his tenth of the year, powered by Noah Gregor. Florida got on the board with a Gustav Forsling goal, his second of the season, assisted by Sam Reinhart and Mason Marchment. San Jose replied in the second period with a Matt Nieto goal, his fourth of the year, passed from Nick Bonino and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. The Panthers got one back in the third period with an Aleksander Barkov goal, his twentieth of the season, helped along by Jonathan Huberdeau and Carter Verhaeghe. The Sharks answered with another Dahlen power play goal, his second of the game and eleventh of the year, with assists provided by Brent Burns and Bonino. Florida pulled back with a Marchment goal, his sixth of the season, courtesy of Reinhart. The Panthers tied it as Huberdeau scored his seventeenth of the year, with the help of Verhaeghe and MacKenzie Weegar. Florida won with a Sam Bennett goal in overtime, his twenty-first of the campaign, made possible by Huberdeau. Back north, the Montreal Canadiens welcome the Edmonton Oilers. Stuart Skinner and Samuel Montembeault man the nets. Edmonton was first to score in the first period with an Evander Kane goal, assisted by Evan Bouchard and Kailer Yamamoto. The Oilers added on with a Zach Hyman goal, his twelfth of the season, via Kris Russell and William Lagesson. Edmonton extended the lead as Leon Draisaitl scored his thirtieth of the year, thanks to Warren Foegele. Montreal got on the board in the second period with a Josh Anderson goal, his ninth of the season, coming off of Ben Chiarot and Jake Evans. The Oilers answered with a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Hyman and Zack Kassian. Toronto tied it with a Pierre Engvall goal, his sixth of the year, assisted by Morgan Rielly and Jason Spezza. The Red Wings retook the lead with a Namestnikov goal, his twelfth of the season, fueled by Larkin and Moritz Seider. Detroit added on with a Tyler Bertuzzi goal, his twenty-first of the year, guided in by Robby Fabbri and Seider. The Maple Leafs got one back with a Michael Bunting goal, his tenth of the season, with helpers from Justin Holl and David Kampf. The Red Wings responded with a Larkin power play goal, his second of the game and twenty-second of the year, powered by Fabbri and Lucas Raymond. Toronto got one back in the third period with a Bunting goal, his second of the game and eleventh of the season, helped along by Auston Matthews and Holl. The Maple Leafs tied it on a Bunting goal, completing his hat trick on his twelfth of the year, with the help of Mitchell Marner and Matthews. South to Tampa Bay, as the Lightning host the Vegas Golden Knights. Robin Lehner and Andrei Vasilevskiy guard the cages. Vegas kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Brett Howden goal, his sixth of the season, made possible by William Carrier. The Golden Knights added on in the second period with a Carrier goal, his fifth of the year, via Howden. Tampa Bay got on the board in the third period with a Ross Colton goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Corey Perry and Pat Maroon. The Lightning tied it with a Perry goal, his twelfth of the year, going in unassisted. The tie went to a shootout, where Nicolas Roy, Shea Theodore, William Karlsson and Mark Stone tallied for the Golden Knights to give them a 4-3 win over Brayden Point, Steven Stamkos, Colton, and the Lightning. The three stars were Howden, Carrier, and Perry.

Backtracking to Raleigh, as the Carolina Hurricanes welcome the New Jersey Devils. Jon Gillies and Antti Raanta are the backups in goal. Carolina drew first blood in the first period with a Jordan Martinook goal, his second of the season, helped along by Seth Jarvis and Brady Skjei. The Hurricanes added on with an Andrei Svechnikov goal, his fifteenth of the year, guided in by Ian Cole. New Jersey got on the board with a Jesper Boqvist goal, coming off of Jimmy Vesey and Janne Kuokkanen. This only made it 2-1, the final, with the three stars going to Raanta (24 for 25 in saves), Svechnikov, and Martinook.

Out west, the Arizona Coyotes bring in the Buffalo Sabres. Craig Anderson and Karel Vejmelka are in the blue paint. Buffalo dented the scoreboard in the first period on a Kyle Okposo power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Jacob Bryson and Cody Eakin. The Sabres added on with a Peyton Krebs goal, his third of the year, passed from Casey Mittelstadt and Alex Tuch. Buffalo extended the lead in the second period as Tuch scored his fourth of the season, thanks to Krebs and Tage Thompson. Arizona got on the board in the third period with a Shayne Gostisbehere power play goal, his eighth of the year, with assists provided by Clayton Keller and Phil Kessel. The final held at 3-1, with the three stars belonging to Anderson (27 for 28 in saves), Krebs, and Tuch.

Finally, the Calgary Flames host the Vancouver Canucks. Thatcher Demko and Jacob Markstrom tend the twines. Calgary won 1-0 in overtime with a Johnny Gaudreau goal, his seventeenth of the campaign, assisted by Elias Lindholm. The three stars were Gaudreau, Markstrom (15 save shutout), and Demko (31 for 32 in saves).

NHL 2021-22 - Day 101

We've got a five-game Friday on the schedule, beginning with...

The Pittsburgh Penguins hosting the Detroit Red Wings. Calvin Pickard and Casey DeSmith are the backups in goal. Detroit led off in the first period with a Givani Smith goal, his third of the season, coming off of Sam Gagner and Joe Veleno. Pittsburgh tied it on a Jake Guentzel power play goal, his twenty-second of the year, powered by Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby in the second period. The Red Wings retook the lead on a Filip Zadina power play goal, his fifth of the season, with assists provided by Michael Rasmussen and Nick Leddy. The Penguins tied it again in the third period with a Guentzel goal, his second of the game and twenty-third of the year, helped along by Crosby. The tie went to a shootout, where Lucas Raymond's lone tally lifted the Red Wings to a 3-2 win. The three stars were Guentzel, Crosby, and Zadina. 

Over in New York, the Rangers welcome the Minnesota Wild. Cam Talbot and Igor Shesterkin guard the cages. New York began in the first period with a Barclay Goodrow goal, his tenth of the season, made possible by Jacob Trouba and Ryan Strome. The Rangers added on with a Chris Kreider goal, his thirty-first of the year, via Trouba and Mika Zibanejad. Minnesota got on the board in the second period with a Kevin Fiala goal, his twelfth of the season, assisted by Ryan Hartman and Jordie Benn. The Wild tied it with a Mats Zuccarello power play goal, his thirteenth of the year, powered by Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy. Minnesota took the lead in the third period with a Frederick Gaudreau goal, his third of the campaign, coming off of Fiala and Zuccarello. This made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars going to Fiala, Zuccarello, and Trouba.

Washington opened in the first period with a Tom Wilson power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, powered by Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Capitals added on with a John Carlson power play goal, his ninth of the year, with assists provided by Kuznetsov and Backstrom. Washington extended the lead as Trevor van Riemsdyk scored, thanks to Connor McMichael and Joe Snively. The Capitals padded the lead in the second period on a McMichael goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Lars Eller and Justin Schultz. Washington continued with a Backstrom goal, his third of the year, passed from Dmitry Orlov. NHL 2021-22 - Day 100

The 100th game day of the season is here, with ten games to be played. First up...

The Montreal Canadiens host the Anaheim Ducks. Anthony Stolarz and Cayden Primeau are the backups in goal. Anaheim started in the first period with a Sam Carrick goal, his ninth of the season, fueled by Sam Steel and Buddy Robinson. The Ducks added on with a Cam Fowler power play goal, his sixth of the year, powered by Adam Henrique and Kevin Shattenkirk. Anaheim extended the lead as Troy Terry scored his twenty-fourth of the season on the power play, thanks to Fowler and Shattenkirk. Samuel Montembeault replaced Primeau in goal. Montreal got on the board with a Jake Evans goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Rem Pitlick and Josh Anderson. The Ducks replied with a Trevor Zegras goal, his eleventh of the season, made possible by Jakob Silfverberg and Simon Benoit. The Canadiens got one back with an Artturi Lehkonen power play goal, his sixth of the year, with assists provided by Mike Hoffman and Tyler Toffoli. The Hurricanes retied it on a Nino Niederreiter goal, his thirteenth of the year, passed from Jaccob Slavin and Vincent Trocheck. The tie went to a shootout, where Andrei Svechnikov's lone tally lifted the Hurricanes to a 3-2 win. The three stars were Niederreiter, Stepan, and Andersen (37 for 39 in saves).

Toronto added on in the second period with a Tavares power play goal, his sixteenth of the year, with assists provided by Marner and Matthews. The Ducks got one back with a Jakob Silfverberg goal, his third of the season, passed from Buddy Robinson and Sam Carrick. Anaheim tied it in the third period on a Vinni Lettieri goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Kevin Shattenkirk and Steel. The Flames added on with an Andrew Mangiapane goal, his nineteenth of the year, passed from Nikita Zadorov and Milan Lucic. Calgary extended the lead as Matthew Tkachuk scored his nineteenth of the season, thanks to Johnny Gaudreau and Rasmus Andersson. The Flames padded the lead in the third period with an Elias Lindholm goal, his fourteenth of the year, assisted by Gaudreau and Noah Hanifin. Calgary continued with an Erik Gudbranson goal, helped along by Adam Ruzicka. The Flames struck again with another Tkachuk goal, his second of the game and twentieth of the season, with helpers from Gaudreau. The Carolina Hurricanes hosting the Vegas Golden Knights. Laurent Brossoit is mismatched with Frederik Andersen in goal. Carolina got going in the second period with a Nino Niederreiter goal, his twelfth of the season, fueled by Jesper Fast and Jordan Staal. The Hurricanes added on with a Vincent Trocheck goal, his tenth of the year, via Andrei Svechnikov and Derek Stepan. Vegas got on the board with a Nolan Patrick goal, his second of the season, passed from Keegan Kolesar. Carolina shot back in the third period with a Sebastian Aho goal, his eighteenth of the year, assisted by Tony DeAngelo and Teuvo Teravainen. The Golden Knights got one back with a Brett Howden goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Shea Theodore and Patrick. Vegas tied it on a Nicolas Hague goal, his fourth of the year, with helpers from William Carrier and Mattias Janmark. The Hurricanes won 4-3 in overtime with another Aho goal, his second of the game and nineteenth of the campaign, courtesy of Svechnikov. The three stars were given to Aho, Patrick, and Svechnikov.

Up in New Jersey, the Devils welcome the Dallas Stars. Braden Holtby and Akira Schmid man the nets. Dallas led off in the first period with a Joe Pavelski goal, his eighteenth of the season, coming off of Jason Robertson. The Stars added on with a Jacob Peterson goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Alexander Radulov and Joel Kiviranta. Dallas extended the lead as Pavelski scored his second of the game and nineteenth of the season, thanks to Miro Heiskanen and Roope Hintz. Jon Gillies replaced Schmid in goal for the second period. The Stars padded the lead on a Hintz goal, his nineteenth of the year, passed from Pavelski in the second period. New Jersey got on the board with a Jesper Bratt power play goal, his fourteenth of the season, powered by Jack Hughes and Damon Severson. The Senators padded the lead in the second period on an Alex Formenton goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Tim Stutzle and Brady Tkachuk. Ottawa padded the lead in the third period when Ennis finished his hat trick with his fourth of the year, with the help of Josh Brown and Lassi Thomson. Winnipeg tied it again on a Pierre-Luc Dubois power play goal, his eighteenth of the year, powered by Perfetti and Nate Schmidt. The Panthers pulled ahead again with a Carter Verhaeghe goal, his fifteenth of the season, with helpers from Aaron Ekblad and Maxim Mamin. Florida added on in the third period with a Sam Bennett goal, his eighteenth of the year, guided in by Anthony Duclair and Ekblad. This stood for a 5-3 win, with the three stars going to Marchment, Lundell, and Reinhart, while Ekblad and Perfetti get the honorable mentions.

The Oilers tied it on a Leon Draisaitl goal, his twenty-ninth of the year, courtesy of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jesse Puljujarvi. Edmonton won 3-2 in overtime with a Connor McDavid goal, his twentieth of the campaign, assisted by Darnell Nurse. The three stars were McDavid, Draisaitl, and McLeod.

Finally, the Seattle Kraken host the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros and Philipp Grubauer protect the nets. NHL 2021-22 - Day 97

It's a busier Monday with seven games on, beginning with...

The New York Rangers hosting the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Quick and Igor Shesterkin man the nets. New York opened in the first period with a Chris Kreider power play goal, his thirtieth of the season, powered by Adam Fox and Artemi Panarin. Los Angeles tied it in the second period with a Blake Lizotte goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Mikey Anderson and Trevor Moore. The Kings took the lead with an Alex Iafallo power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, with assists provided by Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe. The Rangers retied it in the third period with a Barclay Goodrow goal, his eighth of the year, passed from Panarin and Ryan Strome. The tie went to a shootout, where the Rangers got a 3-2 with tallies by Panarin, Alexis Lafreniere and Fox, while Kopitar and Quinton Byfield tallied for the Kings. The three stars were Panarin, Fox, and Shesterkin (34 for 36 in saves). 

Along to DC, as the Washington Capitals welcome the Vegas Golden Knights. Robin Lehner and Vitek Vanecek are the goalies. Vegas got going in the second period with a Michael Amadio goal, his fourth of the season, fueled by Brett Howden. This held for a 1-0 final, with the three stars awarded to Lehner (34 save shutout), Amadio, and Vanecek (28 for 29 in saves). 

Up in Boston, the Bruins bring in the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Tuukka Rask are the veterans in goal. Anaheim started in the first period with a Derek Grant power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Ryan Getzlaf and Hampus Lindholm. The Ducks added on in the second period with a shorthanded Isac Lundestrom goal, his ninth of the year, set up by Lindholm. Boston got on the board with a David Pastrnak goal, his twentieth of the season, coming off of Tomas Nosek and Nick Foligno. Anaheim shot back with a Getzlaf goal, his third of the year, guided in by Rickard Rakell and Lindholm. The Bruins got one back with a Taylor Hall power play goal, his ninth of the season, with assists provided by Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. The Ducks fired back with a Troy Terry goal, his twenty-third of the year, helped along by Kevin Shattenkirk and Cam Fowler. Philadelphia tied it in the second period with an Ivan Provorov goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Travis Konecny and Justin Braun. The Stars retook the lead in the third period with a Jacob Peterson goal, his seventh of the season, assisted by Alexander Radulov and Ryan Suter. Dallas iced it at 3-1 with a Joe Pavelski empty net goal, his seventeenth of the year, set up by Hintz and Esa Lindell. The three stars went to Hintz, Oettinger (27 for 28 in saves), and Peterson. 

Westward to Minnesota, as the Wild welcome the Montreal Canadiens. Cayden Primeau and Cam Talbot are set to start in goal. Montreal began in the first period with a Mike Hoffman goal, his seventh of the season, assisted by Laurent Dauphin and Jeff Petry. Minnesota tied it on a Jared Spurgeon goal, his fourth of the year, courtesy of Alex Goligoski and Jordan Greenway. The Wild took the lead with a Marcus Foligno goal, his seventeenth of the season, coming off of Greenway and Jon Merrill. Minnesota added on in the second period with a Connor Dewar goal, passed from Nico Sturm and Goligoski. The Wild extended the lead as Sturm scored his seventh of the year, thanks to Dewar and Spurgeon. Minnesota padded the lead on a Mats Zuccarello goal, his twelfth of the season, fueled by Kirill Kaprizov.
