NHL 2021-22 - Day 96

Back down to five games on this day. First up...

The Pittsburgh Penguins host the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Tristan Jarry tend the twines. Winnipeg led off in the first period with a Blake Wheeler goal, his second of the season, via Mark Scheifele and Brenden Dillon. The Jets added on in the second period with a Kyle Connor power play goal, his twenty-second of the year, powered by Paul Stastny and Wheeler. Pittsburgh got on the board with a Kasperi Kapanen goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Evgeni Malkin and Danton Heinen. The Penguins tied it on a Jeff Carter goal, his twelfth of the year, going in unassisted. The tie went to a shootout, where Sidney Crosby had the lone tally for a 3-2 Penguins win. The three stars were Wheeler, Carter, and Kapanen. 

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets welcome the Ottawa Senators. Anton Forsberg and Elvis Merzlikins man the nets. Ottawa began in the first period with an Artem Zub goal, his fourth of the season, courtesy of Adam Gaudette and Tyler Ennis. Columbus tied it on a Sean Kuraly goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Jakub Voracek and Zach Werenski. The Senators retook the lead in the second period with a Tim Stutzle goal, his seventh of the season, via Alex Formenton. This stood for the eventual 2-1 final score, with the three stars being Stutzle, Forsberg (35 for 36 in saves), and Zub.

Back east, the New Jersey Devils host the Los Angeles Kings. Cal Petersen and Jon Gillies are the goalies. New Jersey opened in the first period with a Jesper Bratt goal, his twelfth of the season, guided in by Damon Severson. Los Angeles tied it on an Alex Iafallo goal, his twelfth of the year, going in unassisted. The Devils retook the lead on a Bratt power play goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the season, powered by Jack Hughes and Severson. The Kings tied it on a Viktor Arvidsson goal in the second period, his tenth of the year, helped along by Trevor Moore. Los Angeles took the lead in the third period with a Carl Grundstrom goal, his sixth of the campaign, passed from Dustin Brown and Tobias Bjornfot. The final held from here at 3-2, with the three stars being Bratt, Severson, and Grundstrom. 

Out west, the Seattle Kraken bring in the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and Philipp Grubauer are the masked men. Florida started in the first period with an Anthony Duclair goal, his eighteenth of the season, via Jonathan Huberdeau and Aaron Ekblad. Seattle tied it on a Marcus Johansson goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Mark Giordano and Jared McCann. The Kraken took the lead with a Yanni Gourde goal, his ninth of the season, coming off of Adam Larsson and Ryan Donato. Seattle added on with a Colin Blackwell goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Mason Appleton and Riley Sheahan. The Panthers got one back with a Huberdeau power play goal, his sixteenth of the season, powered by Ekblad and Barkov. Florida tied it on an Aleksander Barkov goal, his eighteenth of the year, passed from Huberdeau. The Kraken gained the lead again in the third period with an Appleton goal, his third of the season, assisted by Alex Wennberg and Vince Dunn. Seattle iced it at 5-3 with a Calle Jarnkrok empty net goal, his seventh of the year, going in unassisted. The three stars were Huberdeau, Appleton, and Barkov, while Ekblad gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Vancouver Canucks host the St. Louis Blues. Ville Husso and Michael DiPietro are the lesser-known goalies. Vancouver struck first in the first period with a Tanner Pearson goal, his seventh of the season, helped along by Alex Chiasson and Elias Pettersson. St. Louis tied it on a Justin Faulk goal, his sixth of the year, via Oskar Sundqvist and Brandon Saad. The Blues took the lad in the second period with a Brayden Schenn power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Vladimir Tarasenko and Torey Krug. St. Louis added on with a Jordan Kyrou goal, his sixteenth of the year, coming off of Tarasenko and Faulk. This held up for a 3-1 win, with the three stars being Tarasenko, Faulk, and Husso (38 for 39 in saves).
