NHL 2019-20 - Day 51

We're ready to go with a 13-game slate again, beginning with...

The New York Islanders hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins. Matt Murray and Thomas Greiss are in goal. Pittsburgh started in the first period with an Evgeni Malkin goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Jake Guentzel and John Marino. New York tied it on a Scott Mayfield goal, his third of the year, via Mathew Barzal. The Penguins retook the lead in the second period with an unassisted Bryan Rust goal, his eighth of the season. The Islanders tied it again with an Anthony Beauvillier power play goal, his eighth of the year, powered by Derick Brassard and Ryan Pulock. New York gained the lead in the third period with a Brock Nelson power play goal, his seventh of the season, with assists provided by Beauvillier and Barzal. Pittsburgh tied it as Patric Hornqvist scored his sixth of the year, thanks to Malkin and Brian Dumoulin. The Islanders won 4-3 in overtime with a Nelson goal, his second of the game and eighth of the campaign, guided in by Barzal. The three stars were Nelson, Barzal, and Beauvillier, while Malkin gets an honorable mention.

Down in Florida, the Panthers welcome the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Sergei Bobrovsky draw the starts in goal. Anaheim opened in the first period with a Max Jones goal, his third of the season, fueled by Jakob Silfverberg and Jacob Larsson. The Ducks added on with a Nick Ritchie goal in the second period, his third of the year, courtesy of Ondrej Kase and Erik Gudbranson. Anaheim extended the lead on a Rickard Rakell power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Cam Fowler and Ryan Getzlaf. The Ducks padded the lead on an unassisted Kase goal, his second of the year. Florida got on the board with a Brett Connolly goal, his ninth of the season, coming off of Frank Vatrano. The Panthers pulled back with another Connolly goal, his second of the game and tenth of the year, with helpers from Vincent Trocheck and Anton Stralman. Florida got closer with an Aaron Ekblad goal in the third period, his third of the season, assisted by Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov. The Panthers tied it as Dominic Toninato scored his second of the year, thanks to Ekblad and Mike Hoffman. Florida won 5-4 in overtime with an Ekblad goal, his second of the game and fourth of the campaign, made possible by Huberdeau and Barkov. The three stars belonged to Ekblad, Connolly, and Kase, while Huberdeau and Barkov get the honorable mentions.

Back north, the Boston Bruins bring in the Buffalo Sabres. Linus Ullmark is mismatched with Tuukka Rask in goal. Buffalo led off in the first period with a Rasmus Ristolainen power play goal, powered by Jack Eichel and Victor Olofsson. Boston tied it with a Brad Marchand goal, his fourteenth of the season, coming off of Zdeno Chara and David Pastrnak. The Bruins took the lead with a Marchand power play goal in the second period, his second of the game and fifteenth of the year, with assists provided by Matt Grzelcyk and Danton Heinen. Boston added on in the third period with a Pastrnak power play goal in the third period, his twentieth of the season, guided in by Heinen and Patrice Bergeron. The Sabres got one back with a Brandon Montour goal, his second of the year, via Conor Sheary and Rasmus Dahlin. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars being Marchand, Pastrnak, and Heinen.

South again to Raleigh, as the Carolina Hurricanes host the Philadelphia Flyers. Brian Elliott and Petr Mrazek are in the blue paint. Carolina began in the first period with a Sebastian Aho goal, his eleventh of the season, passed from Teuvo Teravainen and Brett Pesce. The Hurricanes added on with a Teravainen power play goal, his sixth of the year, powered by Andrei Svechnikov and Ryan Dzingel. Philadelphia got on the board with a Claude Giroux goal, his sixth of the season, made possible by Travis Konecny and Philippe Myers. The Flyers tied it on an Ivan Provorov power play goal, his fifth of the year, with assists provided by Giroux and Konecny. Philadelphia took the lead in the second period on a shorthanded Morgan Frost goal, his second of the season, set up by Giroux. Carolina retied it in the third period with a Lucas Wallmark goal, his third of the year, fueled by Brock McGinn and Joel Edmundson. The Flyers reclaimed the lead with a Giroxu goal, his seventh of the season, helped along by Frost and Konecny. Philadelphia iced it at 5-3 with a Kevin Hayes empty net goal, his fifth of the year, going in unassisted. The three stars belonged to Giroux, Frost, and Konecny, while Teravainen earned an honorable mention.

Along to Columbus, where the Blue Jackets welcome the Detroit Red Wings. Jimmy Howard and Joonas Korpisalo are the goalies. Columbus struck first in the first period with an Alexandre Texier goal, his third of the season, assisted by Seth Jones and Cam Atkinson. Detroit tied it on a Tyler Bertuzzi goal, his ninth of the year, passed from Anthony Mantha and Madison Bowey. The Blue Jackets retook the lead in the second period on an Atkinson power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Jones and Zach Werenski. The Red Wings claimed the lead again with a Filip Hronek goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Robby Fabbri and Andreas Athanasiou. Detroit pulled ahead on a shorthanded Luke Glendening goal, his third of the season, set up by Frans Nielsen. Columbus retied it in the third period with an Oliver Bjorkstrand power play goal, his fifth of the year, with helpers from Gustav Nyquist and Pierre-Luc Dubois. The Blue Jackets took the lead with a Boone Jenner goal, his sixth of the season, fueled by Bjorkstrand and Vladislav Gavrikov. Columbus added on with an Eric Robinson goal, his third of the year, via Werenski and Alexander Wennberg. The Red Wings got one back with another Bertuzzi goal, his second of the game and tenth of the campaign, guided in by Dennis Cholowski and Athanasiou. This only made it 5-4, the final, with the three stars being Atkinson, Bjorkstrand, and Bertuzzi, while Jones, Werenski, and Athanasiou get the honorable mentions.

Southwest to St. Louis, as the Blues bring in the Calgary Flames. David Rittich and Jordan Binnington guard the cages. St. Louis kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Zach Sanford goal, his second of the season, via Robert Thomas. The Blues added on in the second period with an Oskar Sundqvist goal, his fifth of the year, courtesy of Sanford. St. Louis extended the lead on a David Perron power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Alex Pietrangelo and Brayden Schenn. The Blues padded the lead in the third period as Sundqvist scored his second of the game and sixth of the year, thanks to Sanford and Thomas. St. Louis kept going with a Vince Dunn goal, his fourth of the campaign, made possible by Thomas and Sanford. The final was 5-0, with the three stars awarded to Binnington (40 save shutout), Sanford, and Sundqvist, while Thomas gets an honorable mention.

Over in Nashville, the Predators host the Vancouver Canucks. Jacob Markstrom and Pekka Rinne are between the pipes. Nashville drew first blood in the first period with a Ryan Johansen goal, his third of the season, made possible by Roman Josi and Viktor Arvidsson. Vancouver tied it on an Elias Pettersson power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Quinn Hughes and Bo Horvat. The Canucks added on with a Tyler Graovac power play goal, with assists provided by Alexander Edler and Josh Leivo. The Predators retied it in the second period with a Calle Jarnkrok power play goal, his seventh of the season, passed from Mikael Granlund and Craig Smith. Vancouver regained the lead with a J.T. Miller power play goal, his ninth of the year, assisted by Brock Boeser and Pettersson. The Canucks added on with a Boeser power play goal, his tenth of the season, guided in by Hughes and Miller. Vancouver extended the lead as Horvat scored his eighth of the year on the power play, with the help of Pettersson and Hughes. Juuse Saros replaced Rinne in goal. Nashville got closer in the third period with a Matt Duchene goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of Jarnkrok and Granlund. The Canucks capped it at 6-3 with a shorthanded and unassisted empty net goal by Tanner Pearson, his fifth of the year. The three stars belonged to Pettersson, Hughes, and Miller, while Horvat, Boeser, Jarnkrok, and Granlund get honorable mentions.

Up in Minnesota, the Wild welcome the Colorado Avalanche. Philipp Grubauer faces a lesser foe in Alex Stalock in goal. Minnesota got going in the second period with a Mats Zuccarello power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Mikko Koivu and Ryan Suter. The Wild added on with a Jordan Greenway goal, his second of the year, via Luke Kunin and Joel Eriksson Ek. Colorado got on the board with a Cale Makar power play goal, his sixth of the season, with assists provided by Nathan MacKinnon and Andre Burakovsky. The Avalanche tied it with another Makar goal, his second of the game and seventh of the year, fueled by Burakovsky and Samuel Girard. Minnesota regained the lead in the third period with a Jason Zucker goal, his seventh of the campaign, with helpers from Eric Staal and Ryan Suter. This stood for a 3-2 win, with the three stars given to Makar, Zucker, and Burakovsky.

Way south to Dallas, as the Stars bring in the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Ben Bishop tend the twines. Dallas dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Mattias Janmark goal, his third of the season, via Andrej Sekera and Corey Perry. The Stars added on with a Jason Dickinson goal, his third of the year, coming off of Taylor Fedun and Perry. Dallas extended the lead as Radek Faksa scored his sixth of the season, thanks to Perry. Winnipeg got on the board with a Kyle Connor goal, his eighth of the year, passed from Mark Scheifele. The Jets got closer with a Patrik Laine goal, his sixth of the season, courtesy of Tucker Poolman and Mathieu Perreault. Winnipeg tied it on a Luca Sbisa goal, assisted by Andrew Copp and Nathan Beaulieu. The Stars retook the lead on a Jamie Benn goal, his fifth of the year, going in unassisted. Dallas finished it at 5-3 with a Tyler Seguin empty net goal, his sixth of the campaign, set up by Dickinson and Miro Heiskanen. The three stars went to Perry, Dickinson, and Benn.

Backtracking to Chicago, as the Blackhawks host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Curtis McElhinney and Corey Crawford are the veterans in goal. Tampa Bay was first to score in the first period on a Mikhail Sergachev power play goal, powered by Yanni Gourde and Pat Maroon. Chicago tied it in the third period with a Brent Seabrook goal, his third of the season, passed from Brandon Saad and Jonathan Toews. The Lightning retook the lead with an Anthony Cirelli goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Victor Hedman and Alex Killorn. Tampa Bay added on with a Brayden Point goal, his fifth of the season, with a lone assist by Ondrej Palat. The Blackhawks got one back with a Dylan Strome goal, his fifth of the year, fueled by Andrew Shaw and Patrick Kane. The Lightning iced it at 4-2 with a Cedric Paquette empty net goal, his second of the campaign, set up by Cirelli and Killorn. The three stars were Cirelli, Killorn, and Point.

In the desert, the Arizona Coyotes welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen and Darcy Kuemper protect the nets. Toronto cracked the scoresheet in the first period with a Tyson Barrie goal, assisted by Ilya Mikheyev and Jake Muzzin. The Maple Leafs added on with a Pierre Engvall shorthanded and unassisted goal in the second period. Toronto extended the lead in the third period as Auston Matthews scored his fifteenth of the season, thanks to William Nylander and Mikheyev. Arizona got on the board with a Vinnie Hinostroza goal, his third of the year, via Christian Dvorak and Jordan Oesterle. This only made it 3-1, the final, with the three stars handed to Engvall, Andersen (30 for 31 in saves), and Mihkeyev.

In Nevada, the Vegas Golden Knights bring in the San Jose Sharks. Aaron Dell and Marc-Andre Fleury receive the starting nods in goal. San Jose got going in the second period with a Timo Meier goal, his sixth of the season, with a lone assist by Dylan Gambrell. Vegas tied it in the third period with a Brayden McNabb goal, his second of the year, passed from William Carrier. The Sharks won 2-1 in overtime with a Logan Couture goal, his fourth of the campaign, fueled by Marc-Edouard Vlasic. The three stars went to Dell (37 for 38 in saves), Couture, and Meier.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings host the Edmonton Oilers. Mike Smith and Jonathan Quick are the experienced goalies. Los Angeles struck first in the first period with a Tyler Toffoli goal, his fifth of the season, passed from Jeff Carter and Drew Doughty. The Kings added on with an Anze Kopitar goal, his eighth of the year, assisted by Dustin Brown and Doughty. Los Angeles extended the lead as Carter scored his seventh of the season, thanks to Carl Grundstrom and Toffoli. Edmonton got on the board in the second period with an unassisted Connor McDavid goal, his sixteenth of the year. The Kings shot back on a Michael Amadio goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Nikolai Prokhorkin and Doughty. Los Angeles padded the lead in the third period with a Toffoli power play goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year, powered by Carter and Amadio. This stood for a 5-1 win, with the three stars awarded to Toffoli, Carter, and Doughty, while Amadio gets an honorable mention.
