MLB Day 122 2012

Getaway day once again, full slate on a Sunday. The end of this post will be delayed as I'm seeing the Sounders and Galaxy play some soccer today, in unusually hot weather for the northwest. Speaking of that particular region...

The New York Yankees are hosting the Seattle Mariners to lead us off. Hisashi Iwakuma and Freddy Garcia will be pitching. Seattle opened with a first inning Jesus Montero single to knock in Dustin Ackley. The Yankees tied it in their half of the inning as Mark Teixeira singled Derek Jeter safely home. The Yankees took the lead in the second inning when Curtis Granderson reached on an error that allowed Chris Stewart to come home. New York added on in the fourth inning as Jeter singled Stewart home. The Mariners replied in the fifth inning as Montero singled to drive in Michael Saunders. The Yankees shot back in the bottom of the fifth on a Raul Ibanez solo home run. New York struck again in the sixth inning with a 2-RBI Ibanez single, plating both Stewart and Granderson. This was all they needed for a 6-2 win, which belonged to Garcia, while Iwakuma was pinned with the loss.

Back west, the Detroit Tigers host the Cleveland Indians. Chris Seddon and Max Scherzer are set to make the starts. Cleveland started in the first inning as Michael Brantley singled in Asdrubal Cabrera, followed by Travis Hafner doing the same for Carlos Santana. Detroit got on the board in their half of the inning as Prince Fielder singled home Austin Jackson. The Indians struck again in the third inning as Shin-Soo Choo hit a solo home run. The Tigers got one back in the bottom of the third as Miguel Cabrera grounded out to bring Jackson home. Detroit tied it in the fourth inning with Alex Avila singling to knock in Jhonny Peralta. Cleveland got the lead back in the fifth inning on a Santana single to drive in Asdrubal Cabrera. The Tigers tied it again in the bottom of the fifth as Omar Infante hit a solo shot. The Indians took the lead back in the seventh inning as Hafner singled Santana across the dish. Detroit tied it again in the bottom of the seventh, as Fielder's sacrifice fly allowed Infante to dash home. Cleveland took the lead in the tenth inning on a pair of solo home runs by Hafner and Ezequiel Carrera, and a Lou Marson double to get Jack Hannahan in. The Tigers tried a rally in the bottom of the tenth as Jackson doubled to drive in Avila, before retying the game with a 2-RBI Infante single to get Andy Dirks and Jackson across the dish, and then they won with a two-run Miguel Cabrera home run to finish Infante's trip around and the game with a 10-8 score. Darin Downs was in line for the win while Chris Perez was dealt the loss.

Down into Cincinnati, with the Reds hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates. A.J. Burnett and Homer Bailey are the solid starters. Cincinnati began with a first inning Jay Bruce double to drive in Drew Stubbs. Pittsburgh took the lead in the second inning as Neil Walker hit a two-run home run, also scoring Garrett Jones. The Reds tied it in the third inning with a Stubbs solo home run. The Pirates took the lead back in the fourth inning when Starling Marte tripled to force in both Gaby Sanchez and Clint Barmes. Pittsburgh got another in the ninth inning with an Andrew McCutchen solo shot, followed by Rod Barajas reaching on an error to get Walker home. This was good for a 6-2 win, picked up by Burnett, while Joel Hanrahan got the last out for a save, and Bailey was stuck with the loss.

South to Atlanta, as the Braves host the Houston Astros. Bud Norris and Kris Medlen are penciled in to pitch. Atlanta got things going in the second inning on a David Ross solo home run. Houston tied it in the sixth inning on a Justin Maxwell double to get Marwin Gonzalez home. Atlanta struck again in the seventh inning with Jones doubling Jason Heyward safely home. The Braves got another in the eighth inning on a Michael Bourn single to plate Ross. This set them up to win 6-1, with Jonny Venters notching the win and Norris suffering the loss.

Back into DC, as the Washington Nationals host the Miami Marlins. Ricky Nolasco is mismatched with Stephen Strasburg. Washington was first to score with a 2-RBI Strasburg single scoring Jayson Werth and Danny Espinosa, followed by Adam LaRoche doing the same for Strasburg and Steve Lombardozzi. Miami got on the board in the seventh inning with a Greg Dobbs double to drive in Carlos Lee. This wasn't enough for them to avoid a 4-1 loss, with the win going to Strasburg, Drew Storen closing up for the save, and Nolasco was handed the loss.

Southward to Tampa Bay, where the Rays host the Baltimore Orioles. Miguel Gonzalez and David Price receive the starting nods. Baltimore started the scoring in the tenth inning with a Taylor Teagarden double to knock in Mark Reynolds. This was it for the scoring, leaving the final at 4-2, with the win going to Nate Jones, the save to Addison Reed, and the loss to Jason Isringhausen.

Out in Colorado, the Rockies host the San Francisco Giants. Tim Lincecum and Tyler Chatwood are the underwhelming pitchers.
