Two matinees on today, with only eleven games total for travel day. We begin in...
New York, as the Yankees host the Texas Rangers. Derek Holland and Ivan Nova are the overrated pitchers. Texas got on the board in the first inning as Adrian Beltre singled both Michael Young and Josh Hamilton home. The Rangers added on in the sixth inning when David Murphy singled home Hamilton and Craig Gentry grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Beltre to get home. New York answered in their half of the inning when Derek Jeter singled to knock in Ichiro Suzuki, followed by Nick Swisher singled to plate Jeter, Andruw Jones hitting a two-run home run that also scored Swisher, and Russell Martin singling to bring around Casey McGehee. Texas took the lead back in the seventh inning as Murphy doubled home Young, before scoring alongside Beltre on a Gentry single. The Yankees got one back in the bottom of the seventh as Mark Teixeira grounded into a fielder's choice to give Raul Ibanez time to come home. The Rangers extended the lead in the eighth inning as Beltre hit a sacrifice fly to give time for Elvis Andrus to come home, followed by Geoveny Soto singling to drive in Hamilton. Texas got one more in the ninth inning on an Andrus single that got Nelson Cruz in, making it a 10-6 final, with the win going to Tanner Scheppers while Boone Logan was handed the loss.
Over in Pittsburgh, the Pirates hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers. Joe Blanton and A.J. Burnett will be handed the ball. Pittsburgh established a first inning lead on a three-run home run by Garrett Jones, sweeping in Jordy Mercer and Andrew McCutchen. Los Angeles got on the board in the second inning with a James Loney solo home run. The Dodgers got another in the fourth inning as Elian Herrera reached on a bunt single that combined with an error to bring around Mark Ellis, followed by a two-run home run from Hanley Ramirez, also scoring Andre Ethier. The Pirates retied it in the bottom of the fourth on a Clint Barmes triple forcing in Rod Barajas. Pittsburgh took the lead again in the fifth inning with another three-run Jones home run, again scoring Mercer and McCutchen, followed by a Pedro Alvarez solo shot. The Pirates shot back in the bottom of the seventh with a 2-RBI Barmes single to bring in Gaby Sanchez and Alvarez. This was it for the scoring at 10-6, with Burnett getting the win and Blanton suffering the loss.
Back east into Baltimore, as the Orioles host the Boston Red Sox. Clay Buchholz and Chris Tillman receive the starting nods. Baltimore got going in the second inning with a 2-RBI Adam Jones double to plate Nick Markakis and J.J. Hardy. Boston replied in the second inning as Scott Podsednik singled to drive in Nick Punto. The Orioles answered in the bottom of the second with a Mark Reynolds solo home run. The White Sox took the lead in the fifth inning with Dayan Viciedo and Tyler Flowers solo shots. Chicago padded the lead in the eighth inning with a three-run Alex Rios home run, sweeping in Kevin Youkilis and Adam Dunn, followed by an Alexei Ramirez solo home run. This gave them a 7-2 win, with Liriano earning the win while Laffey was pinned with the loss.
Back in the States, the Atlanta Braves host the San Diego Padres. Jason Marquis and Kris Medlen are the little-known pitchers. Atlanta started in the first inning as Chipper Jones hit a two-run home run, also scoring Michael Bourn. The Braves added on in the fifth inning with solo shots by Jason Heyward and Jones, followed by Paul Janish singing in Freddie Freeman. This made it 6-0, with Medlen throwing a five-hit complete game shutout, while Marquis had no help in the loss.
North to Cincinnati, as the Reds host the New York Mets. Matt Harvey and Homer Bailey will take the mound. Harvey got the win, Jon Rauch tossed a spot save, and Bailey was stuck with the loss.
Up to Milwaukee, as the Brewers hosted the Philadelphia Phillies. Cliff Lee opposes a lesser foe in Marco Estrada. This gave them a 7-4 lead, with Livan Hernandez getting the win, Jim Henderson converting the save, and Josh Lindblom was dealt the loss.
Down in Kansas City, the Royals host the Oakland Athletics. Daniel Straily and Luke Hochevar will make the starts. Oakland got things going in the sixth inning on a Coco Crisp solo home run.
