2015-16 NHL Season - Day 44

Nine games on for today, beginning in...

Boston, as the Bruins host the Minnesota Wild. Devan Dubnyk faces a lesser foe in Jonas Gustavsson in goal. Boston was first to score in the first period on a Brad Marchand goal, his seventh of the season, courtesy of Brett Connolly. Minnesota tied it in the second period on a Jason Zucker goal, his sixth of the year, passed from Mikko Koivu and Nino Niederreiter. The Bruins retook the lead on a Loui Eriksson goal, his seventh of the season, coming off of David Krejci and Adam McQuaid. Boston added on with another Eriksson goal, his second of the game and eighth of the year, coming on the power play from Patrice Bergeron and Torey Krug. The Wild got one back with a Jordan Schroeder goal, via Ryan Suter and Ryan Carter. The Bruins answered in the third period on Eriksson's third of the game and ninth of the season, made possible by Krejci and Matt Beleskey. This made it 4-2, the final, with the three stars being Eriksson, Krejci, and Marchand.

Over in Philadelphia, the Flyers welcome the San Jose Sharks. Martin Jones and Steve Mason are the masked men. San Jose won 1-0 in overtime on a Melker Karlsson goal, his third of the season, assisted by Joonas Donskoi and Paul Martin. The three stars were handed to Jones (34 save shutout), Karlsson, and Mason (20 for 21 in saves).

Across Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Penguins bring in the Colorado Avalanche. Reto Berra and Marc-Andre Fleury are in the creases. Colorado led off in the first period with a Matt Duchene power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Jarome Iginla and Tyson Barrie. Pittsburgh tied it in the second period on a David Perron goal, his third of the year, guided in by Ian Cole and Beau Bennett. The Penguins took the lead with an Evgeni Malkin power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Kris Letang and Phil Kessel. Pittsburgh added on with a Chris Kunitz goal, his third of the year, with a lone helper by Nick Bonino. The Avalanche got one back with a third period goal by Barrie, helped along by Iginla. The Penguins replied on a Sidney Crosby goal, his third of the season, courtesy of Pascal Dupuis and Cole. Colorado countered with a Duchene goal, his second of the game and tenth of the year, assisted by Gabriel Landeskog and Mikhail Grigorenko. This only made it 4-3, the final, with the three stars going to Duchene, Barrie, and Cole, while Iginla gets an honorable mention.

Back to DC, with the Washington Capitals hosting the Dallas Stars. Kari Lehtonen and Philipp Grubauer receive the starting nods. Dallas struck first in the first period on a Tyler Seguin goal, his eleventh of the season, assisted by John Klingberg and Jamie Benn. Washington tied it on a Nicklas Backstrom goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Taylor Chorney and Dmitry Orlov. The Stars took the lead in the third period with a Cody Eakin goal, his sixth of the season, passed from Klingberg and Valeri Nichuschkin. The Capitals retied it on an Alex Ovechkin goal, his ninth of the year, courtesy of Backstrom and T.J. Oshie. Dallas shot back on a Jason Spezza goal, his eighth of the campaign, going in unassisted. This made it 3-2, with the three stars given to Lehtonen (33 for 35 in saves), Backstrom, and Klingberg.

Up in Montreal, the Canadiens welcome the Arizona Coyotes. Mike Smith and Mike Condon are set to start. Arizona began in the first period on a Martin Hanzal goal, his fourth of the season, with a lone assist by Anthony Duclair. The Coyotes added on with a Shane Doan goal, his fifth of the year, via Tobias Rieder and the goalie Smith. Arizona extended the lead in the second period as Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored his fourth of the season on the power play, going in unassisted. Montreal got on the board with a Max Pacioretty goal, his tenth of the year, assisted by Brendan Gallagher and Tomas Plekanec. The Canadiens got closer in the third period on a Dale Weise goal, his ninth of the campaign, coming off of Andrei Markov and Pacioretty. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars going to Pacioretty, Ekman-Larsson, and Smith (31 for 33 in saves).

West to Ontario, where the Ottawa Senators bring in the Columbus Blue Jackets. Curtis McElhinney and Craig Anderson will be in goal. Ottawa got going in the second period on an Erik Karlsson goal, his fourth of the season, made possible by Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Milan Michalek. The Senators added on with another Eriksson goal, his fifth of the year and second of the game, via Bobby Ryan and Kyle Turris. Ottawa iced it at 3-0 on a Turris empty net power play goal, his ninth of the campaign, set up by Karlsson. The three stars belonged to Karlsson, Anderson (25 save shutout), and Turris.

Down in Tampa Bay, the Lightning host the New York Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist and Ben Bishop tend the twines. Tampa Bay opened in the first period on an Alex Killorn goal, his third of the season, helped along by Valtteri Filppula. New York tied it in the third period as Dominic Moore scored his second of the year, an unassisted goal. The Lightning took the lead on a shorthanded Filppula goal, his second of the campaign, set up by J.T. Brown. This stood for a 2-1 win, with the three stars going to Filppula, Bishop (20 for 21 in saves), and Killorn.

Staying in the state, the Florida Panthers welcome the Anaheim Ducks. Frederik Andersen and Roberto Luongo protect the nets. Anaheim dented the scoreboard in the second period on a Cam Fowler power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. The Ducks added on with an Andrew Cogliano shorthanded goal in the third period, his second of the year, set up by Shawn Horcoff. Florida got on the board with an Aleksandar Barkov goal, his fourth of the season, fueled by Jaromir Jagr. Anaheim iced it at 3-1 with a Jakob Silfverberg empty net goal, set up by Getzlaf and Sami Vatanen. The three stars went to Cogliano, Andersen (23 for 24 in saves), and Getzlaf.

Finally, the St. Louis Blues bring in the Buffalo Sabres. Linus Ullmark is mismatched with Jake Allen in goal. St. Louis started on a first period goal by Kevin Shattenkirk, his second of the season, a power play goal powered by Alexander Steen and Vladimir Tarasenko. Buffalo tied it in the second period on a Sam Reinhart goal, his fourth of the year, guided in by Rasmus Ristolainen and Jack Eichel. The Blues took the lead back on a Tarasenko goal, his twelfth of the season, coming on the power play from Steen and David Backes. The Sabres tied it again on a Ryan O'Reilly goal, his seventh of the year, fueled by Brian Gionta and Matt Moulson. St. Louis won 3-2 with a lone tally by Steen in the shootout. The three stars went to Steen, Tarasenko, and Allen (32 for 34 in saves).
