It's the first day of the newest season of Russian hockey. This is the ninth year for the KHL, and the beginning of my fifth year of covering it. I wasn't sure I'd do this, but I've got the motivation to go with it. With no further delay, Metallurg Magnitogorsk hosts CSKA Moscow in a rematch of last year's Gagarin Cup finals. Viktor Fasth of Moscow and Vasily Koshechkin of Magnitogorsk man the nets. Moscow opened with a Dmitry Kugryshev goal, assisted by Bud Holloway and Bogdan Kiselevich. Magnitogorsk tied it on an Oskar Osala goal, via Evgeny Timkin. Metallurg took the lead with a Sergei Mozyakin goal, coming off of Chris Lee and Andrei Bereglazov. Magnitogorsk added on with a second period goal by Sergei Tereshchenko on the power play, powered by Bereglazov and Osala. CSKA got one back with a Kugryshev goal, with a lone assist by Konstantin Alexeyev. The game ended 3-2, with the three stars awarded to Osala, Bereglazov, and Kugryshev.
