NHL 2016/17 - Day 49

Just three games on tonight, beginning with...

The New York Islanders hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins. Matt Murray and Thomas Greiss are in goal. New York opened in the first period on a Johnny Boychuk goal, his third of the season, coming off of Josh Bailey and Brock Nelson. The Islanders added on in the second period with a Jason Chimera goal, his second of the year, via Scott Mayfield and Anthony Beauvillier. New York extended the lead as Casey Cizikas scored his third of the season, with the help of Mayfield and Andrew Ladd. Pittsburgh got on the board in the third period on a Conor Sheary goal, his fifth of the year, helped along by Patric Hornqvist and Sidney Crosby. The Penguins got closer with a Justin Schultz goal, assisted by Ian Cole. Pittsburgh tied it on an Evgeni Malkin goal, his ninth of the season, courtesy of Brian Dumoulin and Crosby. The Islanders regained the lead with an Anders Lee goal, his fifth of the year, made possible by Thomas Hickey and Boychuk. New York iced it at 5-3 with a Nikolay Kulemin empty net goal, his second of the campaign, set up by Cizikas. The three stars were Boychuk, Cizikas, and Mayfield, while Crosby gets an honorable mention.

Over west to Calgary, where the Flames welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jhonas Enroth and Chad Johnson are the former Buffalo Sabres in goal. Calgary started with a Freddie Hamilton goal in the first period, made possible by Micheal Ferland and Deryk Engelland. The Flames added on with a Kris Versteeg goal, his third of the season, via Sean Monahan and Troy Brouwer. Calgary extended the lead as Matt Stajan scored his second of the year, passed from Michael Frolik and Alex Chiasson. The final held at 3-0, with the three stars going to Johnson (39 save shutout), Hamilton, and Versteeg.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings bring in the San Jose Sharks. Martin Jones and Peter Budaj are in the creases. San Jose struck first in the first period with a Kevin Labanc goal, his second of the season, passed from Logan Couture and Joel Ward. The Sharks added on with a Couture goal, his eighth of the year, courtesy of Joonas Donskoi and Ward. San Jose extended the lead as Ryan Carpenter scored, thanks to Mikkel Boedker. Los Angeles got on the board in the second period with a Dustin Brown power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Marian Gaborik and Nic Dowd. The Sharks iced it at 4-1 with a Couture empty net goal in the third period, his second of the game and ninth of the year, going in unassisted. The three stars were Couture, Ward, and Jones (26 for 27 in saves).
