NHL 2016/17 - Day 110

All three of today's games are early as the NHL succumbs to the ratings monster that is the Super Bowl. We begin in...

DC, as the Washington Capitals host the Los Angeles Kings. Peter Budaj and Philipp Grubauer are given the starting nods in goal. Washington struck first in the first period with a Lars Eller goal, his ninth of the season, made possible by Brett Connolly. The Capitals added on with a Marcus Johansson goal, his sixteenth of the year, coming off of Evgeny Kuznetsov and Brooks Orpik. Washington extended the lead in the second period as Connolly scored his tenth of the season, thanks to Tom Wilson and Karl Alzner. The Capitals padded the lead on a T.J. Oshie goal, his twentieth of the year, assisted by Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin. Washington iced it at 5-0 with a third period goal by Justin Williams, his eighteenth of the campaign, via Johansson. The three stars were Connolly, Johansson, and Grubauer (38 save shutout).

In Canada, the Montreal Canadiens welcome the Edmonton Oilers. Cam Talbot and Al Montoya draw the starts in goal. The scoreless tie lasted into the shootout, where Leon Draisaitl scored to give the Oilers the 1-0 win. The three stars were Talbot (22 save shutout), Montoya (32 save "shutout"), and Draisaitl.

Finally, the New York Rangers bring in the Calgary Flames. Brian Elliott and Henrik Lundqvist are in the blue paint. Calgary was first to score in the first period with a Dougie Hamilton power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Mikael Backlund and Matthew Tkachuk. New York tied it on a Rick Nash power play goal, his fifteenth of the year, with assists provided by Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh. The Rangers took the lead in the third period with a Michael Grabner goal, his twenty-third of the season, assisted by Brady Skjei and J.T. Miller. The Flames tied it again on a Troy Brouwer goal, his ninth of the year, passed from Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan. New York retook the lead with a Chris Kreider goal, his twenty-first of the season, courtesy of Mika Zibanejad and Dan Girardi. The Rangers added on with a Jesper Fast goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Miller and Grabner. Calgary answered with a Backlund goal, his sixteenth of the season, going in unassisted. This only made it 4-3, the final, with the three stars handed to Grabner, Backlund, and Miller.
