NHL 2016/17 - Day 119

Seven games on for tonight, beginning with...

The New Jersey Devils hosting the Colorado Avalanche. Jeremy Smith is mismatched with Cory Schneider in goal. New Jersey opened in the first period with a Pavel Zacha goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Stefan Noesen and Jacob Josefson. Colorado tied it on a Mark Barberio power play goal in the second period, powered by Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen. The Devils took the lead back with an Andy Greene goal, his fourth of the year, via Travis Zajac. New Jersey added on with a Kyle Palmieri goal, his fifteenth of the season, courtesy of Taylor Hall. The Avalanche pulled back with a Mikhail Grigorenko goal, his sixth of the year, helped along by Matt Duchene. This only made it 3-2, the eventual final, with the three stars belonging to Palmieri, Greene, and Zacha.

Over in Pittsburgh, the Penguins welcome the Vancouver Canucks. Ryan Miller and Matt Murray draw the starts in goal. Pittsburgh got going in the second period with an Evgeni Malkin goal, his twenty-third of the season, passed from Olli Maatta and Trevor Daley. The Penguins added on in the third period with a Jake Guentzel goal, his sixth of the year, coming off of Sidney Crosby and Brian Dumoulin. Pittsburgh extended the lead as Phil Kessel scored his twentieth of the season, thanks to Malkin and Scott Wilson. The Penguins iced it at 4-0 with a Matt Cullen goal, his ninth of the year, assisted by Nick Bonino and Kris Letang. The three stars were Malkin, Murray (29 save shutout), and Guentzel.

Up to Ontario, where the Ottawa Senators bring in the Buffalo Sabres. Robin Lehner faces his former crease-mate, Craig Anderson, in goal. Buffalo led off in the first period with a Ryan O'Reilly goal, his twelfth of the season, fueled by Kyle Okposo and Justin Falk. Ottawa tied it on a Bobby Ryan goal, his twelfth of the year, via Erik Karlsson and Fredrik Claesson. The Senators took the lead in the second period with a Dion Phaneuf goal, his eighth of the season, made possible by Ryan. The Sabres retied it on a Matt Moulson goal, his twelfth of the year, coming off of Sam Reinhart and Jack Eichel in the third period. Buffalo took the lead with a Justin Bailey goal, his second of the campaign, fueled by Jake McCabe and Rasmus Ristolainen. This stood for a 3-2 win, with the three stars being Ryan, Bailey, and Moulson.

Staying in the province, the Toronto Maple Leafs host the New York Islanders. Thomas Greiss and Frederik Andersen are the reliable goalies. Toronto started in the first period with a Josh Leivo goal, going in unassisted. The Maple Leafs added on with a Nazem Kadri goal, his twenty-first of the season, coming off of Nikita Zaitsev and William Nylander. Toronto extended the lead in the second period as Nylander scored his fifteenth of the year, thanks to Kadri and Roman Polak. New York got on the board with a Jason Chimera penalty shot goal, his fourteenth of the season, coming from a Matt Hunwick hook. The Maple Leafs replied in the third period with an Auston Matthews power play goal, his twenty-sixth of the year, powered by Leo Komarov and Leivo. Toronto padded the lead on a Tyler Bozak goal, his fourteenth of the season, helped along by James van Riemsdyk and Mitchell Marner. The Maple Leafs chased Greiss with a Matthews goal, his second of the game and twenty-seventh of the year, made possible by Connor Brown. Toronto iced it at 7-1 against Jean-Francois Berube as Hunwick scored, with the help of Leivo and Ben Smith. The three stars were Matthews, Leivo, and Kadri, while Nylander gets an honorable mention.

Over in Manitoba, the Winnipeg Jets welcome the Dallas Stars. Antti Niemi and Connor Hellebuyck are the goalies. Winnipeg struck first in the first period with a Patrik Laine goal, his twenty-fourth of the season, assisted by Andrew Copp and Mark Scheifele. The Jets added on with a Joel Armia goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Shawn Matthias and Paul Postma in the second period. Dallas got on the board with a Jamie Benn goal, his nineteenth of the season, guided in by Jason Spezza and Tyler Seguin. The Stars tied it on a Seguin power play goal, his twenty-first of the year, powered by John Klingberg and Benn. Winnipeg retook the lead in the third period with another Laine goal, his second of the game and twenty-fifth of the season, fueled by Scheifele. The Jets extended the lead as Blake Wheeler scored an empty net goal, his seventeenth of the year, going in unassisted. Winnipeg iced it at 5-2 with an empty net goal by Laine, who completed his hat trick with his twenty-sixth of the campaign, set up by Scheifele, who got a sock trick, and Josh Morrissey. The three stars were Laine, Scheifele, and Benn, while Seguin gets an honorable mention.

Back stateside, the Minnesota Wild bring in the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Devan Dubnyk tend the twines. Anaheim began in the first period with a Joseph Cramarossa goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Corey Perry and Hampus Lindholm. This held up all game for a 1-0 Ducks win, with the three stars awarded to Gibson (37 save shutout), Cramarossa, and Dubnyk (22 for 23 in saves).

Finally, the Edmonton Oilers host the Arizona Coyotes. Cam Talbot faces a lesser foe in Louis Domingue in goal. Arizona was first to score with a Josh Jooris goal in the first period, his third of the season, passed from Jordan Martinook and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Edmonton tied it on a second period Leon Draisaitl power play goal, his twenty-first of the year, powered by Milan Lucic and Oscar Klefbom. The Oilers took the lead on a Matt Hendricks goal, his third of the season, via Iiro Pakarinen and Mark Letestu. The Coyotes retied it on a Martin Hanzal goal, his fourteenth of the year, helped along by Max Domi and Radim Vrbata. Edmonton regained the lead with a Letestu power play goal, his eleventh of the season, with assists provided by Connor McDavid and Draisaitl. The Oilers added on in the third period with a Klefbom goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Anton Slepyshev and Draisaitl. Edmonton extended the lead as Patrick Maroon scored his twentieth of the campaign, thanks to Klefbom and McDavid. This stood for a 5-2 win, with the three stars being Draisaitl, Letestu, and Klefbom, while McDavid gets an honorable mention.
