NHL 2018/19 - Day 17

DC, as the Washington Capitals host the Florida Panthers. James Reimer and Braden Holtby are in the creases. Florida began in the first period with a Vincent Trocheck goal, his second of the season, made possible by Jonathan Huberdeau and Alexander Petrovic. Washington tied it on a John Carlson goal, his fourth of the year, courtesy of Lars Eller and Michal Kempny. The Panthers retook the lead on an Evgenii Dadonov power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Aleksander Barkov and Trocheck. Florida added on with a Colton Sceviour goal, passed from Huberdeau and Trocheck. The Panthers extended the lead as Jared McCann scored, thanks to Denis Malgin and Keith Yandle. Pheonix Copley replaced Holtby in goal for the second period. The Capitals replied in the second period on a Brett Connolly goal, via Jakub Vrana and Christian Djoos. Washington got closer with a Vrana goal, his second of the year, assisted by Eller and Connolly. The Capitals tied it as Devante Smith-Pelly scored, with the help of Matt Niskanen and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Michael Hutchinson relieved Reimer in goal at this time. Florida regained the lead with a Huberdeau power play goal, his second of the season, with assists provided by Dadonov and Mike Hoffman. Washington tied it again on a Nicklas Backstrom power play goal in the third period, his second of the year, with helpers from Eller, who got a sock trick, and Kuznetsov. The tie went to a shootout, where Barkov, Trocheck, and Huberdeau bested T.J. Oshie and Kuznetsov as the Panthers took a 6-5 win. The three stars were Huberdeau, Trocheck, and Connolly, while Dadonov, Barkov, Vrana, Eller, and Kuznetsov get the honorable mentions.

Down in Dallas, the Stars welcome the Minnesota Wild. Devan Dubnyk and Ben Bishop protect the nets. Dallas got going in the third period with a Jason Spezza goal, via Miro Heiskanen and Devin Shore. Minnesota tied it on a Matt Dumba goal, his third of the season, coming off of Mikael Granlund and Zach Parise. The Wild added on with a Ryan Suter goal, his second of the year, passed from Eric Staal and Jason Zucker. Minnesota iced it at 3-1 with a Parise empty net goal, his second of the campaign, set up by Suter. The three stars were Dubnyk (33 for 34 in saves), Suter, and Parise.

Finally, the Calgary Flames bring in the Nashville Predators. Pekka Rinne and Mike Smith are the masked men. Nashville led off in the first period with a Ryan Johansen goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Filip Forsberg and Ryan Ellis. Calgary tied it on an Elias Lindholm goal, his fifth of the year, helped along by Johnny Gaudreau and Mark Giordano. The Predators took the lead back in the second period with a Craig Smith goal, his third of the season, assisted by Kyle Turris and Kevin Fiala. The Flames tied it again with a Matthew Tkachuk power play goal, his third of the year, powered by Lindholm and Giordano. Nashville retook the lead again with a Fiala power play goal, with assists provided by Ellis and Turris. Calgary tied it again in the third period with a Sam Bennett goal, his second of the season, guided in by Derek Ryan and Michael Stone. The Predators pulled ahead on a Zac Rinaldo goal, with a lone assist by Yannick Weber. Nashville iced it at 5-3 with an unassisted Forsberg empty net goal, his fifth of the year. The three stars were Fiala, Forsberg, and Ellis, while Turris, Lindholm, and Giordano get the honorable mentions.
