Just two games on tonight, beginning with...
The Washington Capitals welcoming the Pittsburgh Penguins. Matt Murray and Braden Holtby tend the twines. Washington got going in the second period with a Lars Eller goal, his fifth of the season, with a lone assist by Tom Wilson. Pittsburgh tied it on a Sidney Crosby power play goal, his sixteenth of the year, powered by Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. The Penguins took the lead on a Bryan Rust goal, his seventh of the campaign, helped along by Jake Guentzel and Crosby. This stood for the eventual 2-1 final score, with the three stars going to Crosby, Murray (31 for 32 in saves), and Rust.
Out west, the Colorado Avalanche bring in the Montreal Canadiens. Carey Price faces a lesser foe in Philipp Grubauer in goal. Montreal kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Brendan Gallagher power play goal, his fifteenth of the season, powered by Jeff Petry and Jonathan Drouin. Colorado tied it in the second period with a Mikko Rantanen goal, his sixteenth of the year, via Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche took the lead on a Gabriel Landeskog goal in the third period, his twenty-third of the season, passed from MacKinnon and Rantanen. This held up for a 2-1 win, with the three stars given to Rantanen, Grubauer (35 for 36 in saves), and MacKinnon.
