NHL 2018/19 - Day 94

Eleven games on for a busy night across the league, beginning in...

Boston, as the Bruins host the Minnesota Wild. Alex Stalock is mismatched with Tuukka Rask in goal. Boston started in the first period with a Danton Heinen goal, his fifth of the season, passed from John Moore and Torey Krug. The Bruins added on with a Brad Marchand goal, his sixteenth of the year, courtesy of Patrice Bergeron and Moore. Boston extended the lead as Jake DeBrusk scored his fourteenth of the season on the power play, with the help of Bergeron and Marchand. The Bruins padded the lead with a Bergeron power play goal in the second period, his fourteenth of the year, powered by Marchand and Krug. This stood for the eventual 4-0 win, with the three stars going to Marchand, Bergeron, and Rask (24 save shutout), while Moore and Krug get the honorable mentions.

Over in Buffalo, the Sabres welcome the New Jersey Devils. Keith Kinkaid and Carter Hutton are the goalies. New Jersey led off in the first period with a Blake Coleman goal, his thirteenth of the season, assisted by Miles Wood and Travis Zajac. Buffalo tied it in the second period with a Jeff Skinner goal, his twenty-ninth of the year, with a lone assist by Tage Thompson. The Sabres took the lead on a C.J. Smith goal, passed from Johan Larsson and Kyle Okposo. Buffalo added on with a Casey Mittelstadt goal, his sixth of the season, guided in by Zach Bogosian and Rasmus Dahlin. The Sabres extended the lead on a shorthanded Jake McCabe goal, his third of the year, set up by Evan Rodrigues and Vladimir Sobotka. Buffalo padded the lead as Lawrence Pilut scored, thanks to Conor Sheary and Rasmus Ristolainen. This held up for a 5-1 win, with the three stars given to Hutton (20 for 21 in saves), Smith, and Pilut.

Also in New York, the Islanders bring in the Carolina Hurricanes. Curtis McElhinney and Thomas Greiss are the backups in goal. New York opened in the first period with an unassisted Brock Nelson goal, his fourteenth of the season. Carolina tied it on a Saku Maenalanen goal, passed from Victor Rask and Warren Foegele. The Hurricanes took the lead with a Greg McKegg goal, his second of the year, made possible by Micheal Ferland and Trevor van Riemsdyk. The Islanders retied it in the third period on a Devon Toews goal, his second of the season, fueled by Anders Lee and Nelson. Carolina responded with a Justin Williams goal, his tenth of the year, via McKegg. The Hurricanes added on with a Jaccob Slavin power play goal, his fifth of the season, powered by Dougie Hamilton and Rask. New York pulled back with a Nelson goal, his second of the game and fifteenth of the year, going in unassisted. They failed to equalize, losing 4-3, with the three stars being Nelson, McKegg, and Rask.

In Pittsburgh, the Penguins host the Florida Panthers. Roberto Luongo and Matt Murray are the masked men. Pittsburgh began in the first period with a Tanner Pearson goal, his sixth of the season, made possible by Marcus Pettersson and Patric Hornqvist. The Penguins added on with a Bryan Rust goal, his tenth of the year, coming off of Jake Guentzel and Sidney Crosby. Pittsburgh extended the lead as Rust scored his second of the game and eleventh of the season while shorthanded, set up by Matt Cullen and Brian Dumoulin. The Penguins padded the lead on a shorthanded and unassisted Riley Sheahan goal, his sixth of the year. Florida got on the board with an Aleksander Barkov goal, his seventeenth of the season, assisted by Aaron Ekblad and Evgenii Dadonov. Pittsburgh replied in the third period with a Crosby goal, his twentieth of the year, fueled by Evgeni Malkin and Pettersson. This made it 5-1, the final, with the three stars handed to Rust, Murray (36 for 37 in saves), and Crosby, while Pettersson takes an honorable mention.

Further along, the Detroit Red Wings welcome the Montreal Canadiens. Antti Niemi and Jimmy Howard are in the creases. Montreal got going in the second period with a Brendan Gallagher goal, his sixteenth of the season, assisted by Tomas Tatar and Phillip Danault. The Canadiens added on with a Joel Armia goal, his fourth of the year, passed from Max Domi and Jordie Benn. Detroit got on the board with an Andreas Athanasiou goal, his sixteenth of the season, fueled by Luke Glendening. Montreal replied in the third period with a Jeff Petry goal, his ninth of the year, via Tatar. The Red Wings got one back on an Athanasiou power play goal, his second of the game and seventeenth of the campaign, powered by Anthony Mantha and Gustav Nyquist. The final remained at 3-2, with the three stars being Tatar, Athanasiou, and Petry.

To the south, the Tampa Bay Lightning bring in the Columbus Blue Jackets. Sergei Bobrovsky and Andrei Vasilevskiy guard the cages. Tampa Bay drew first blood in the first period with a Mathieu Joseph goal, his eleventh of the season, coming off of Mikhail Sergachev. The Lightning added on with a Brayden Point goal, his twenty-fifth of the year, assisted by Nikita Kucherov and Tyler Johnson. Tampa Bay extended the lead in the third period as Kucherov scored his twenty-first of the season, with the help of Johnson and Point. The Lightning padded the lead with a Point goal, his second of the game and twenty-sixth of the year, via Sergachev. This produced the 4-0 final score, with the three stars being Point, Vasilevskiy (31 save shutout), and Kucherov, while Johnson and Sergachev earn honorable mentions.

Back north, the Washington Capitals host the Philadelphia Flyers. Mike McKenna and Pheonix Copley are the lesser-known goalies. Washington struck first in the first period with a Tom Wilson goal, his thirteenth of the season, passed from Jakub Vrana. Philadelphia tied it with a Jakub Voracek goal, his eleventh of the year, with a lone assist by Oskar Lindblom. The Capitals reclaimed the lead with a T.J. Oshie goal, his twelfth of the season, coming off of Lars Eller and John Carlson in the second period. Washington added on with an unassisted Vrana goal, his thirteenth of the year. The Capitals extended the lead as Vrana scored his second of the game and fourteenth of the season on the power play, thanks to Travis Boyd and Carlson. The Flyers got one back in the third period with a Wayne Simmonds goal, his thirteenth of the year, made possible by Voracek and Sean Couturier. Philadelphia pulled closer with a Claude Giroux goal, his fourteenth of the season, assisted by Couturier and Voracek. Washington iced it with a shorthanded and unassisted empty net goal by Oshie, his second of the game and thirteenth of the year. The three stars of the 5-3 game were Vrana, Voracek, and Oshie, while Carlson and Couturier get the honorable mentions.

Westward to St. Louis, as the Blues welcome the Dallas Stars. Ben Bishop and Jake Allen protect the nets. Dallas kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Tyler Seguin goal, his sixteenth of the season, made possible by John Klingberg and Alexander Radulov. The Stars added on with a Klingberg power play goal in the second period, his sixth of the year, powered by Radulov and Seguin. Dallas extended the lead as Seguin scored his second of the game and seventeenth of the season, thanks to Miro Heiskanen and Roman Polak. St. Louis got on the board with a David Perron goal, his fifteenth of the year, fueled by Alex Pietrangelo and Carl Gunnarsson. This only made it 3-1, the eventual final, with the three stars belonging to Seguin, Klingberg, and Bishop (26 for 27 in saves), while Radulov gets an honorable mention.

In Canada, the Winnipeg Jets bring in the Colorado Avalanche. Philipp Grubauer and Connor Hellebuyck receive the starting nods in goal. Winnipeg was first to score in the first period with a Mathieu Perreault goal, his ninth of the season, coming off of Brandon Tanev and Dmitry Kulikov. The Jets added on with a Kyle Connor power play goal, his fifteenth of the year, powered by Blake Wheeler and Jacob Trouba. Colorado got on the board with a Gabriel Landeskog power play goal, his twenty-sixth of the season, via Tyson Barrie and Nathan MacKinnon. Winnipeg replied in the second period with a shorthanded Wheeler goal, his seventh of the year, set up by Mark Scheifele and Trouba. The Jets extended the lead as Bryan Little scored his eighth of the season on the power play, with the help of Tyler Myers and Josh Morrissey. The Avalanche got one back with a Carl Soderberg goal, his twelfth of the year, passed from Matt Calvert and Erik Johnson. Colorado got closer with a Ryan Graves goal, his second of the season, guided in by Mikko Rantanen and Soderberg. Winnipeg countered with an Andrew Copp goal in the third period, his third of the year, fueled by Brendan Lemieux and Myers. The Jets padded the lead as Scheifele scored his twenty-third of the season, thanks to Wheeler. The Avalanche got one back with Landeskog's second goal of the game and twenty-seventh of the year, assisted by MacKinnon and Barrie. Winnipeg capped it at 7-4 with a Trouba empty net power play goal, his fourth of the campaign, with helpers from Wheeler, who got a sock trick, and Scheifele. The three stars were awarded to Wheeler, Scheifele, and Landeskog, while Soderberg, MacKinnon, Barrie, Trouba, and Myers all get honorable mentions.

Back stateside, the Vegas Golden Knights host the New York Rangers. Alexandar Georgiev is mismatched with Marc-Andre Fleury in goal. Vegas cracked the scoresheet in the first period with a Cody Eakin goal, his thirteenth of the season, passed from Alex Tuch and Jon Merrill. The Golden Knights added on in the second period with a Brandon Pirri power play goal, his seventh of the year, powered by Max Pacioretty and Nate Schmidt. Vegas extended the lead as Jonathan Marchessault scored an unassisted goal, his fourteenth of the season. New York got on the board in the third period with a Mika Zibanejad goal, his twelfth of the year, helped along by Mats Zuccarello and Chris Kreider. The Golden Knights answered with a Ryan Carpenter empty net goal, his third of the season, set up by Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Paul Stastny. The Rangers got one back with a Jesper Fast goal, his sixth of the year, assisted by Jimmy Vesey and Boo Nieves. This only made it 4-2, the final, with the three stars going to Marchessault, Pirri, and Eakin.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks host the Edmonton Oilers. Cam Talbot and Aaron Dell are in the creases. San Jose dented the scoreboard in the first period with an Evander Kane goal, his fifteenth of the season, coming off of Tomas Hertl and Erik Karlsson. The Sharks added on with a Marcus Sorensen penalty shot goal, his eighth of the year, thanks to a hold from Alexander Petrovic. Edmonton got on the board with an Alex Chiasson power play goal, his seventeenth of the season, powered by Connor McDavid and Darnell Nurse. San Jose shot back with a Joonas Donskoi goal, his twelfth of the year, with helpers from Tim Heed and Barclay Goodrow. The Sharks extended the lead in the second period as Kane scored his second of the game and sixteenth of the season, thanks to Brent Burns and Timo Meier. The Oilers replied on a Milan Lucic goal, his second of the year, via Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jesse Puljujarvi. San Jose replied with a Burns power play goal, his eighth of the season, with assists provided by Karlsson and Meier. The Sharks padded the lead in the third period on a Joe Thornton goal, his eighth of the year, fueled by Brenden Dillon and Lukas Radil. San Jose kept going with a Donskoi goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the season, courtesy of Kane and Karlsson, the latter getting a sock trick. This sealed it at 7-2, with the three stars going to Donskoi, Kane, and Burns, while Karlsson and Meier get the honorable mentions.
