NHL 2021-22 - Day 181

Four games on for this Friday night action, beginning with...

The Columbus Blue Jackets hosting the Ottawa Senators. Filip Gustavsson and Elvis Merzlikins are in goal. Columbus led off in the first period with a Jack Roslovic power play goal, his twentieth of the season, powered by Cole Sillinger and Kent Johnson. Ottawa tied it on a Brady Tkachuk goal, his twenty-ninth of the year, via Drake Batherson and Josh Norris in the third period. The tie lasted to a shootout, where Tim Stutzle had the lone tally for a 2-1 Senators win. The three stars were Gustavsson (33 for 34 in saves), Tkachuk, and Merzlikins (25 for 26 in saves). 

Up in Minnesota, the Wild welcome the Seattle Kraken. Philipp Grubauer and Marc-Andre Fleury are the masked men. Seattle began in the first period with a Daniel Sprong goal, his thirteenth of the season, via Joonas Donskoi. The Kraken added on with a Yanni Gourde goal, his nineteenth of the year, fueled by Karson Kuhlman and Jared McCann. Minnesota got on the board with a Joel Eriksson Ek power play goal, his twenty-second of the season, powered by Kirill Kaprizov and Kevin Fiala. The Wild tied it in the second period with an Eriksson Ek goal, his second of the game and twenty-third of the year, guided in by Fiala and Matt Boldy. Minnesota pulled ahead on a Kaprizov power play goal, his forty-fifth of the season, with assists provided by Fiala and Eriksson Ek. The Wild extended the lead as Ryan Hartman scored his thirty-third of the year, thanks to Kaprizov. Minnesota padded the lead on a Mats Zuccarello power play goal, his twenty-fourth of the season, made possible by Fiala and Kaprizov. The Wild continued with a Nicolas Deslauriers goal, his eighth of the year, coming off of Fiala and Tyson Jost. Seattle got one back in the third period with a Matty Beniers power play goal, his third of the season, with helpers from Vince Dunn and McCann. This made it 6-3, the final, with the three stars given to Fiala, Kaprizov, and Eriksson Ek, while McCann gets an honorable mention. 

Over in Edmonton, the Oilers bring in the Colorado Avalanche. Darcy Kuemper and Mike Smith protect the nets. Colorado opened in the first period with a Valeri Nichushkin goal, his twenty-third of the season, helped along by Bowen Byram and Cale Makar. Edmonton tied it in the second period with an Evander Kane goal, his eighteenth of the year, via Connor McDavid. The Oilers took the lead with an Evan Bouchard goal, his eleventh of the season, coming off of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Kris Russell. The Avalanche tied it again with a Nichushkin goal, his second of the game and twenty-fourth of the year, assisted by Nathan MacKinnon and Andre Burakovsky. Edmonton retook the lead with Kane's second goal of the game and nineteenth of the season, with helpers from Duncan Keith and Kailer Yamamoto. The Oilers added on with another Kane goal, completing his hat trick on his twentieth of the year, guided in by McDavid and Brett Kulak. Edmonton extended the lead in the third period as as Yamamoto scored his nineteenth of the season, thanks to Kane and McDavid. Colorado got one back on a MacKinnon goal, his thirty-second of the year, made possible by Burakovsky and J.T. Compher. The Oilers iced it at 6-3 with a Russell empty net goal, his second of the campaign, set up by Leon Draisaitl. The three stars were Kane, McDavid, and Yamamoto, while Russell, Nichushkin, MacKinnon, and Burakovsky get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Arizona Coyotes host the Washington Capitals. Vitek Vanecek and Karel Vejmelka are the Czech netminders. Washington started in the first period with a Conor Sheary goal, his eighteenth of the season, assisted by Nicklas Backstrom and Justin Schultz. The Capitals iced it at 2-0 with a John Carlson empty net goal, his sixteenth of the year, set up by Nic Dowd and Sheary. The three stars were Vanecek (19 save shutout), Sheary, and Carlson.
