NHL 2022-23 - Day 166

There's 13 games on the slate for Saturday, beginning with...

The Nashville Predators hosting the St. Louis Blues. Thomas Greiss and Juuse Saros are set to start in goal. Nashville began in the first period with a Thomas Novak goal, his fifteenth of the season, coming off of Luke Evangelista. The Predators added on with a Cody Glass power play goal, his thirteenth of the year, powered by Novak and Evangelista. Nashville extended the lead in the second period on a Colton Sissons shorthanded goal, his twelfth of the season, going in unassisted. The Predators padded the lead as Evangelista scored his sixth of the year, thanks to Kiefer Sherwood and Novak. St. Louis got on the board in the third period with a Calle Rosen goal, his eighth of the season, courtesy of Alexey Toropchenko. Nashville shot back on an unassisted Yakov Trenin goal, his eleventh of the year. The Predators finished it at 6-1 with a Philip Tomasino power play goal, his fifth of the campaign, with assists provided by Tyson Barrie and Novak. The three stars were Novak, Evangelista, and Saros (21 for 22 in saves). 

Up in Pittsburgh, the Penguins welcome the Boston Bruins. Jeremy Swayman and Tristan Jarry protect the nets. Boston led off in the first period with a Charlie McAvoy power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Pavel Zacha and Tyler Bertuzzi. Pittsburgh tied it on a Bryan Rust goal, his seventeenth of the year, via Sidney Crosby and Mark Friedman. The Bruins retook the lead in the second period with a David Pastrnak power play goal, his fifty-fourth of the season, made possible by Dmitry Orlov. The Penguins retied it on another Rust goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the year, going in unassisted. Boston regained the lead on a Pastrnak goal, his second of the game and fifty-fifth of the season, passed from Zacha and Matt Grzelcyk. Pittsburgh tied it with a Jake Guentzel goal, his thirty-fifth of the year, courtesy of Brian Dumoulin and Rust. The Bruins pulled ahead with a Pastrnak goal, completing his hat trick on his fifty-sixth of the season, with helpers from David Krejci and Zacha. The final held at 4-3, with the three stars given to Pastrnak, Rust, and Zacha. 

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets bring in the Florida Panthers. Alex Lyon and Michael Hutchinson are the backups in goal. Florida opened in the first period with a Sam Reinhart power play goal, his twenty-ninth of the season, powered by Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov. The Panthers added on with a Carter Verhaeghe goal, his thirty-seventh of the year, coming off of Gustav Forsling and Barkov. Florida extended the lead in the second period as Verhaeghe scored his second of the game and thirty-eighth of the season, made possible by Aaron Ekblad and Anthony Duclair. The Panthers padded the lead on another Verhaeghe goal, completing his hat trick on his thirty-ninth of the year, courtesy of Brandon Montour and Duclair. Florida kept going in the third period with a Nick Cousins goal, his eighth of the season, helped along by Eric Staal and Reinhart. The Panthers continued with another Verhaeghe goal, his fourth of the game and fortieth of the year, with helpers from Duclair and Barkov. Florida struck again with an Eric Staal goal, his fourteenth of the season, guided in by Reinhart and Ryan Lomberg. The final was 7-0, and the three stars were Verhaeghe, Lyon (21 save shutout), and Barkov, while Reinhart, Duclair, and Staal get the honorable mentions.

Up in Montreal, the Canadiens host the Carolina Hurricanes. Antti Raanta and Sam Montembeault are the goalies. Carolina started in the first period with a Brady Skjei goal, his seventeenth of the season, via Paul Stastny and Brett Pesce. The Hurricanes added on in the second period with a Paul Stastny goal, his ninth of the year, courtesy of Brent Burns and Seth Jarvis. Carolina extended the lead on a Sebastian Aho power play goal, his thirty-fourth of the season, powered by Stefan Noesen and Jack Drury. This made it 3-0, with the three stars being Raanta (14 save shutout), Stastny, and Skjei.

Along to Ottawa, as the Senators welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ilya Samsonov and Mads Sogaard are between the pipes. Toronto got going in the second period with a Michael Bunting goal, his twenty-second of the season, going in unassisted. The Maple Leafs added on with a William Nylander goal, his thirty-seventh of the year, via Alexander Kerfoot. Toronto extended the lead as Radim Zohorna scored, thanks to Jake McCabe and T.J. Brodie. Cam Talbot replaced Sogaard in goal for the third period. The three stars were given to Samsonov (31 save shutout), Bunting, and Nylander in the 3-0 game.

Stateside again, the Philadelphia Flyers bring in the Buffalo Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Felix Sandstrom are the young goalies. Philadelphia kicked off the scoring in the second period with a Morgan Frost goal, his seventeenth of the season, coming off of Brendan Lemieux and Wade Allison. Buffalo tied it on a Kyle Okposo goal, his eleventh of the year, assisted by Peyton Krebs and Matias Samuelsson. The Sabres took the lead in the second period on an Alex Tuch goal, his thirty-third of the season, passed from Casey Mittelstadt. Buffalo added on with a Jordan Greenway goal, his fifth of the year, made possible by Tyson Jost and Rasmus Dahlin. The Sabres extended the lead as Jeff Skinner scored his thirty-third of the season, thanks to Mittelstadt and Owen Power. Buffalo padded the lead on a Tuch goal, his second of the game and thirty-fourth of the year, fueled by Mittelstadt and Skinner. The Flyers got one back on another Frost goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the season, guided in by Joel Farabee and Travis Sanheim. Philadelphia got closer in the third period with a Travis Konecny goal, his twenty-eighth of the year, helped along by Noah Cates. The Sabres iced it at 6-3 with a shorthanded goal by Tuch, completing his hat trick on his thirty-fifth of the campaign, set up by Jack Quinn. The three stars were given to Tuch, Mittelstadt, and Skinner, while Frost got an honorable mention.

Down in Tampa Bay, the Lightning host the New York Islanders. Ilya Sorokin and Andrei Vasilevskiy tend the twines. Tampa Bay struck first in the first period with a Mikhail Sergachev goal, his ninth of the season, guided in by Ross Colton and Darren Raddysh. The Lightning added on in the second period with a Tanner Jeannot goal, his sixth of the year, via Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Ian Cole. Tampa Bay extended the lead as Nikita Kucherov scored his twenty-ninth of the season, thanks to Brayden Point and Sergachev. The Lightning padded the lead on a Steven Stamkos goal, his thirty-third of the year, passed from Raddysh and Point. Semyon Varlamov replaced Sorokin in goal. Tampa Bay kept going in the third period with a Point power play goal, his forty-eighth of the season, powered by Kucherov and Alex Killorn. The final held at 5-0, with the three stars given to Vasilevskiy (38 save shutout), Point, and Kucherov, while Sergachev and Raddysh get the honorable mentions.

Northwest to Chicago, as the Blackhawks welcome the New Jersey Devils. Mackenzie Blackwood and Alex Stalock are in the blue paint. New Jersey dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Dougie Hamilton goal, his twentieth of the season, assisted by Ondrej Palat and Jack Hughes. Chicago tied it on a Tyler Johnson goal, his eleventh of the year, via Taylor Raddysh and Jason Dickinson. The Blackhawks took the lead with a Lukas Reichel goal, his sixth of the season, passed from Andreas Athanasiou and Raddysh. The Devils tied it on an Erik Haula goal, his eleventh of the year, fueled by Timo Meier and Hamilton. New Jersey pulled ahead on a Jesper Boqvist goal, his ninth of the season, guided in by Hughes and Jesper Bratt. The Devils added on with a Ryan Graves goal, his seventh of the year, with helpers from Haula and Boqvist. Chicago pulled one back with an Athanasiou goal, his sixteenth of the season, helped along by Jonathan Toews and Nikita Zaitsev. New Jersey replied with a Timo Meier goal, his thirty-seventh of the year, coming off of Damon Severson. The Devils iced it at 6-3 with a Dawson Mercer empty net goal, his twenty-fourth of the campaign, set up by Nico Hischier and Tomas Tatar. Further west, the Colorado Avalanche bring in the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger and Alexandar Georgiev tend the twines. Colorado was first to score in the first period with a Nathan MacKinnon goal, his thirty-third of the season, guided in by Mikko Rantanen. The Avalanche added on in the second period with a Logan O'Connor goal, his ninth of the year, via Andrew Cogliano. Dallas got on the board with a Tyler Seguin power play goal, his nineteenth of the season, powered by Evgenii Dadonov and Jason Robertson. Colorado replied with a MacKinnon power play goal, his second of the game and thirty-fourth of the year, fueled by Rantanen and J.T. Compher. The Avalanche extended the lead with a Valeri Nichushkin empty net goal, his seventeenth of the season, set up by Rantanen. The Stars got one back with a Joe Pavelski power play goal, his twenty-fourth of the year, with assists provided by Robertson and Miro Heiskanen. Colorado iced it at 5-2 with an empty net goal by Rantanen, his forty-ninth of the campaign, going in unassisted. The three stars were Rantanen, MacKinnon, and Robertson.

Down in Arizona, the Coyotes host the San Jose Sharks. Kaapo Kahkonen and Ivan Prosvetov are in the blue paint. San Jose started in the first period with a Noah Gregor goal, his sixth of the season, via Nico Sturm. The Sharks added on with a Jacob Peterson power play goal, powered by Logan Couture and Erik Karlsson. San Jose extended the lead as Kyle Criscuolo scored, going in unassisted. Arizona got on the board with a J.J. Moser power play goal, his seventh of the year, with assists provided by Matias Maccelli and Victor Soderstrom. The Sharks replied on a Danil Gushchin power play goal, coming off of Karlsson and Jacob MacDonald. San Jose padded the lead in the third period with another Gregor goal, his second of the game and seventh of the season, helped along by Sturm. The Sharks continued with a Couture power play goal, his twenty-seventh of the year, with helpers from Tomas Hertl and Karlsson. San Jose piled on with Gregor finishing his hat trick on his eighth of the season, thanks to Kevin Labanc and Karlsson. The Coyotes got one back with a Milos Kelemen goal, dished from Jack McBain and Brett Ritchie. This only made it 7-2, the final, with the three stars handed to Gregor, Karlsson, and Couture, while Sturm gets an honorable mention.

North to Edmonton, where the Oilers welcome the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Jack Campbell are the experienced goalies. Edmonton drew first blood in the first period with a Zach Hyman goal, his thirty-fourth of the season, via Mattias Ekholm. The Oilers added on in the second period with a Leon Draisaitl goal, his forty-eighth of the year, fueled by Evander Kane. Edmonton extended the lead as Darnell Nurse scored his eleventh of the season, going in unassisted. The Oilers padded the lead on a Draisaitl power play goal, his second of the game and forty-ninth of the year, with assists provided by Hyman and Connor McDavid. Edmonton continued with a McDavid goal, his sixty-second of the season, guided in by Evan Bouchard and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Lukas Dostal replaced an injured Gibson in goal. The Oilers kept going with a Draisaitl shorthanded goal, completing his hat trick on his fiftieth of the year, set up by Ekholm. This made it 6-0, the final, with the three stars going to Draisaitl, McDavid, and Campbell (36 save shutout), while Hyman and Ekholm get the honorable mentions.

Backtracking to Seattle, as the Kraken bring in the Los Angeles Kings. Pheonix Copley and Martin Jones receive the starts in goal. Los Angeles cracked the scoresheet in the second period with a Sean Durzi goal, his ninth of the season, via Alex Iafallo and Kevin Fiala. The Kings added on in the third period with a Carl Grundstrom goal, his twelfth of the year, going in unassisted. Seattle got on the board with an Oliver Bjorkstrand power play goal, his eighteenth of the season, powered by Daniel Sprong and Justin Schultz. Los Angeles finished it at 3-1 with a Fiala empty net goal, his twenty-third of the year, set up Iafallo and Blake Lizotte. The three stars were Fiala, Iafallo, and Copley (25 for 26 in saves).

Finally, the Vegas Golden Knights host the Minnesota Wild. Marc-Andre Fleury and Laurent Brossoit patrol the creases. Minnesota opened in the first period with a Matt Boldy goal, his twenty-ninth of the season, courtesy of John Klingberg and Joel Eriksson Ek. Vegas tied it on a Ben Hutton goal, his third of the year, guided in by Jack Eichel and Alex Pietrangelo. The Golden Knights took the lead on a Zach Whitecloud goal, his fifth of the season, made possible by Chandler Stephenson. Vegas added on in the second period with a Brett Howden goal, his fifth of the year, helped along by Ivan Barbashev and Eichel. The Golden Knights iced it at 4-1 in the third period with a Stephenson empty net goal, his fourteenth of the campaign, set up by Nicolas Roy. The three stars were Eichel, Stephenson, and Brossoit (29 for 30 in saves).
