NHL 2018/19 - Day 8

The new NHL season enters its second week with three games on a Wednesday. First up...

The Ottawa Senators host the Philadelphia Flyers. Calvin Pickard and Craig Anderson are in the creases. Ottawa started in the first period with a Brady Tkachuk power play goal, powered by Chris Tierney and Maxime Lajoie. Philadelphia tied it on a Jakub Voracek power play goal, with assists provided by Shayne Gostisbehere and Claude Giroux. The Senators took the lead back in the second period on another Tkachuk goal, helped along by Mikkel Boedker and Thomas Chabot. The Flyers tied it again with a Sean Couturier goal, his second of the season, assisted by Radko Gudas and Voracek. Philadelphia pulled ahead with Voracek's second goal of the game, made possible by Gudas. Ottawa retied it on a Lajoie power play goal, his second of the year, coming off of Tierney and Tkachuk. The Flyers regained the lead on a Scott Laughton goal, his second of the season, passed from Dale Weise and Andrew MacDonald. Philadelphia added on in the third period with a Robert Hagg goal, his second of the year, courtesy of Michael Raffl and Weise. The Flyers extended the lead as Giroux scored a power play goal, thanks to Gostisbehere and Voracek. The Senators replied with a Lajoie power play goal, his second of the game and third of the season, with helpers from Tierney, who got a sock trick, and Boedker. Philadelphia finished it at 7-4 with a Laughton empty net goal, his second of the game and third of the year, set up by Voracek and Gudas, both of whom earned sock tricks. The three stars went to Voracek, Tkachuk, and Gudas, while Laughton, Giroux, Weise, Gostisbehere, Tierney, Boedker, and Lajoie earned the honorable mentions.

Stateside, the Washington Capitals welcome the Vegas Golden Knights. Marc-Andre Fleury and Braden Holtby tend the twines. Washington opened in the first period with an Evgeny Kuznetsov power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Nicklas Backstrom and John Carlson. The Capitals added on with an Alex Ovechkin goal in the second period, his third of the year, via Kuznetsov and Brett Connolly. Vegas got on the board with an unassisted Cody Eakin goal. Washington shot back with a Backstrom power play goal in the third period, made possible by Kuznetsov and Carlson. The Golden Knights pulled one back on a Reilly Smith goal, guided in by Nick Holden and William Karlsson. The Capitals answered with Ovechkin's second of the game and fourth of the season, helped along by Kuznetsov and Connolly. Washington iced it at 5-2 with a T.J. Oshie empty net goal, his fourth of the year, set up by Matt Niskanen and Dmitry Orlov. The three stars belonged to Kuznetsov, Ovechkin, and Backstrom, while Connolly and Carlson earn the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Anaheim Ducks bring in the Arizona Coyotes. Antti Raanta and John Gibson are the masked men. Anaheim struck first in the first period with a Ryan Kesler goal, assisted by Andrew Cogliano and Hampus Lindholm. Arizona tied it on a Dylan Strome power play goal, powered by Clayton Keller and Richard Panik. The Coyotes took the lead in the second period on a shorthanded Brad Richardson goal, set up by Michael Grabner and Niklas Hjalmarsson. The Ducks retied it on a Ben Street goal, with a lone assist by Marcus Pettersson. In the shootout, Arizona won 3-2 on a lone tally by Nick Cousins. The three stars were Richardson, Strome, and Gibson (37 for 39 in saves).

NHL 2018/19 - Day 7

We complete the first week of the season with six games on today. First up...

The Carolina Hurricanes host the Vancouver Canucks. Jacob Markstrom and Curtis McElhinney draw the starts in goal. Carolina opened in the first period with an unassisted Jordan Staal goal, his third of the season. Vancouver tied it on a Sven Baertschi goal, coming off of Alexander Edler and Christopher Tanev. The Hurricanes retook the lead with a Brett Pesce goal, via Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho. Carolina added on with an Aho goal, his second of the year, assisted by Micheal Ferland and Teravainen. The Canucks countered in the second period with a Bo Horvat power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Baertschi and Brock Boeser. The Hurricanes shot back with an Andrei Svechnikov goal, his second of the year, guided in by Jaccob Slavin and Dougie Hamilton. Vancouver replied on a Baertschi power play goal, his second of the game, with assists provided by Edler and Elias Pettersson. Carolina responded in the third period with a Warren Foegele goal, his third of the campaign, passed from Justin Williams and Slavin. This stood for a 5-3 win, with the three stars given to Aho, Baertschi, and Teravainen, while Slavin and Edler get the honorable mentions.

Up in Philadelphia, the Flyers welcome the San Jose Sharks. Aaron Dell is mismatched with Brian Elliott in goal. San Jose started in the first period with an unassisted Logan Couture goal. The Sharks added on with a Joe Pavelski goal, made possible by Kevin Labanc and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. San Jose extended the lead as Pavelski scored again, thanks to Labanc. The Sharks padded the lead with an Evander Kane power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Justin Braun and Joonas Donskoi. Philadelphia got on the board in the second period with a Shayne Gostisbehere power play goal, with assists from Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds. San Jose answered on another Kane goal, his second of the game and fourth of the year, passed from Vlasic and Labanc, the latter earning a sock trick. The Sharks kept going with a Tomas Hertl power play goal in the third period, his second of the season, fueled by Erik Karlsson and Brent Burns. San Jose struck again with a Timo Meier goal, his second of the year, via Labanc and Karlsson. The Sharks continued on a Barclay Goodrow shorthanded goal, set up by Marcus Sorensen. The Flyers got one back with a Simmonds power play goal, his third of the campaign, helped along by Jakub Voracek and Giroux. This produced the 8-2 final score, with the three stars belonging to Kane, Pavelski, and Labanc, while Karlsson, Vlasic, Simmonds, and Giroux get the honorable mentions.

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets bring in the Colorado Avalanche. Philipp Grubauer and Sergei Bobrovsky are in the blue paint. Columbus led off in the first period with a Nick Foligno goal, via Alexander Wennberg and Anthony Duclair. The Blue Jackets added on with a Pierre-Luc Dubois power play goal, powered by Cam Atkinson and Foligno. Colorado got on the board in the second period with a Nathan MacKinnon goal, his third of the season, guided in by Mikko Rantanen and Erik Johnson. The Avalanche tied it with a Carl Soderberg power play goal, his second of the year, assisted by Samuel Girard and J.T. Compher. Columbus regained the lead in the third period with an Artemi Panarin goal, his second of the season, passed from Markus Nutivaara and Ryan Murray. The Blue Jackets extended the lead as Foligno scored again, thanks to Wennberg. Columbus iced it at 5-2 with an empty net goal by Josh Anderson, his second of the year, going in unassisted. The three stars were Foligno, Wennberg, and Panarin.

Down to Nashville, as the Predators host the Calgary Flames. Mike Smith and Pekka Rinne are the masked men. Calgary began in the first period with an Elias Lindholm power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Johnny Gaudreau. The Flames added on in the second period with a Sean Monahan power play goal, his third of the year, with assists provided by Matthew Tkachuk and Gaudreau. Calgary extended the lead as Monahan scored in the third period, his second of the game and fourth of the campaign helped along by Gaudreau, who earned a sock trick, and T.J. Brodie. This made it 3-0, the eventual final, with the three stars given to Smith (43 save shutout), Monahan, and Gaudreau.

In Canada, the Winnipeg Jets welcome the Los Angeles Kings. Jack Campbell and Connor Hellebuyck are between the pipes. Los Angeles struck first in the first period with an Ilya Kovalchuk goal, made possible by Drew Doughty and Alex Iafallo. Winnipeg tied it on a Mark Scheifele goal, passed from Brandon Tanev and Josh Morrissey. The Jets took the lead in the second period on a Kyle Connor power play goal, his third of the campaign, powered by Blake Wheeler and Dustin Byfuglien. The Jets held on to win 2-1, with the three stars given to Connor, Scheifele, and Campbell (37 for 39 in saves).

Finally, the Dallas Stars bring in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen and Ben Bishop protect the nets. Toronto drew first blood in the first period with an unassisted Mitchell Marner goal, his second of the season. Dallas tied it on an Alexander Radulov goal, his third of the year, via Tyler Seguin and Miro Heiskanen. The Maple Leafs retook the lead on an Auston Matthews goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Kasperi Kapanen and Morgan Rielly. The Stars retied it in the second period with a Seguin goal, his third of the year, guided in by Esa Lindell and the goalie Bishop. Toronto retook the lead again with a Matthews power play goal, his second of the game and seventh of the season, powered by Rielly and Marner. The Maple Leafs added on with a Ron Hainsey goal, fueled by Kapanen and Par Lindholm. Toronto extended the lead as John Tavares scored a power play goal, his fifth of the year, thanks to Marner and Rielly, the latter earning a sock trick. Dallas got one back with a Jamie Benn power play goal, his third of the season, with helpers from Radulov and Seguin. The Stars got closer on a John Klingberg goal in the third period, his second of the year, made possible by Radulov and Seguin, the latter earning a sock trick. The Maple Leafs fired back with another Tavares goal, his second of the game and sixth of the campaign, courtesy of Marner, who got a sock trick, and Nikita Zaitsev. Toronto iced it at 7-4 with a Connor Brown empty net goal, set up by Rielly and Hainsey. The three stars were Matthews, Tavares, and Seguin, while Marner, Kapanen, Rielly, Hainsey, and Radulov all get big honorable mentions.

NHL 2018/19 - Day 6

It's American Columbus Day and Canadian Thanksgiving, meaning three of today's four games are matinees. First up...

The Boston Bruins host the Ottawa Senators. Mike Condon is mismatched with Tuukka Rask in goal. Boston started in the first period with a Patrice Bergeron goal, his second of the season, via David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy. The Bruins added on with a Bergeron power play goal, his second of the game and third of the year, powered by Brad Marchand and Pastrnak. Ottawa got on the board in the second period with a Ryan Dzingel goal, coming off of Mark Stone and Zack Smith. Boston replied with a Chris Wagner goal, assisted by McAvoy and Sean Kuraly. The Senators replied with another Dzingel goal, guided in by Dylan DeMelo and Thomas Chabot. The Bruins countered in the third period with a Bergeron goal, completing his hat trick on his fourth of the season, courtesy of Marchand and McAvoy, the latter earning a sock trick. Boston extended the lead as Pastrnak scored his second of the year, with the help of Bergeron and Zdeno Chara. Ottawa got one back with a Bobby Ryan goal, fueled by DeMelo and Chris Tierney. The Bruins capped it at 6-3 with a Pastrnak empty net goal, his second of the game and third of the campaign, set up by Marchand, who also got a sock trick. The three stars were Bergeron, Pastrnak, and Dzingel, while Marchand, McAvoy, and DeMelo earn honorable mentions.

In Brooklyn, the New York Islanders welcome the San Jose Sharks. Martin Jones and Robin Lehner play in goal. New York got going in the second period on an Anders Lee power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Josh Bailey and Mathew Barzal. The Islanders added on in the third period with a Scott Mayfield goal, with a lone assist by Casey Cizikas. New York extended the lead as Matt Martin scored, thanks to Valtteri Filppula and Leo Komarov. The Islanders finished it at 4-0 with a Cizikas shorthanded empty net goal, set up by Johnny Boychuk. The three stars were Lehner (35 save shutout), Cizikas, and Lee.

Up in Buffalo, the Sabres bring in the Vegas Golden Knights. Marc-Andre Fleury and Carter Hutton are in the creases. Buffalo opened in the first period with a Jack Eichel power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Rasmus Ristolainen and Kyle Okposo. The Sabres added on in the second period with an Eichel goal, his second of the game and third of the year, via Sam Reinhart and Conor Sheary. Vegas got on the board with an Erik Haula goal, coming off of William Karlsson and Jonathan Marchessault. Buffalo answered with a Marco Scandella goal, helped along by Okposo and Patrik Berglund. The Sabres extended the lead as Jason Pominville scored, thanks to Evan Rodrigues and Zemgus Girgensons. The Golden Knights got one back in the third period on a Marchessault goal, his second of the campaign, guided in by Karlsson. This only made it 4-2, the final, with the three stars handed to Eichel, Okposo, and Marchessault, while Karlsson gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Anaheim Ducks host the Detroit Red Wings. Jimmy Howard and John Gibson are the solid goalies. Detroit struck first in the first period with a Tyler Bertuzzi goal, his second of the season, helped along by Michael Rasmussen and Frans Nielsen. Anaheim tied it with a Hampus Lindholm goal in the second period, via Andrew Cogliano and Kiefer Sherwood. The Red Wings retook the lead on a Darren Helm goal, passed from Danny DeKeyser and the goalie Howard. The Ducks tied it again in the third period with a Jakob Silfverberg goal, guided in by Adam Henrique and Max Comtois. Anaheim won 3-2 in the shootout on a lone tally by Troy Terry. The three stars were Silfverberg, Lindholm, and Cam Fowler.

MLS 2018 Week 32

We've got a full set of games from Saturday to Monday this time. We begin with...

The Montreal Impact hosting the Columbus Crew SC. Zack Steffen and Evan Bush are the gloved men. Montreal opened in the thirty-second minute with a Saphir Taider penalty kick goal. The Impact added on with an Alejandro Silva goal in the forty-fourth minute, made possible by Taider. Pedro Santos of Columbus had a yellow card for a foul in first half stoppage time. Montreal extended the lead as Ignacio Piatti scored in the fifty-ninth minute, thanks to Taider. Micheal Azira of the Impact took a yellow card for his sixty-first minute foul. The Crew's Jonathan Mensah received a yellow card for a ninetieth minute foul. The final held at 3-0, with Taider as the man of the match.

Down in Georgia, Atlanta United FC welcomes the New England Revolution. Brad Knighton and Brad Guzan are the similarly named goalies. Wilfried Zahibo of New England took a yellow card for a sixteenth minute foul. Atlanta started in the seventeenth minute with a George Bello goal, courtesy of Leandro Gonzalez Pirez. Zachary Herivaux of the Revolution picked up a yellow card for his thirty-eighth minute foul. The Five Stripes added on in the fifty-second minute with a Julian Gressel goal, passed from Hector Villalba. New England saw a yellow card for a foul by Guillermo Hauche in the fifty-sixth minute, as did teammate Luis Caicedo in the sixty-fourth minute. The Revolution got on the board in stoppage time with a Juan Agudelo goal, set up by Diego Fagundez. This only made it 2-1, with Atlanta holding on to win and giving Gressel man of the match honors.

A Canadian battle sees Toronto FC bring in the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Stefan Marinovic and Alexander Bono are set to start in goal. Vancouver led off with a Russell Teibert goal in the fourth minute, set up by Yordy Reyna. Gregory van der Wiel of Toronto had a yellow card for a twenty-eighth minute foul. The Whitecaps saw a yellow card for an Aly Ghazal foul in the thirty-fourth minute. Chris Mavinga of the Reds received a yellow card in first half stoppage time for his foul. Toronto went down to ten men in the sixty-sixth minute when van der Wiel received a second yellow card for a foul, earning an ejection. The Reds tied it in the seventy-third minute on a Jozy Altidore penalty kick goal. Vancouver's Reyna took a yellow card for his seventy-sixth minute foul. The Whitecaps took the lead back in the seventy-eighth minute on a Kei Kamara goal, helped along by Jordon Mutch and Reyna. Marinovic of Vancouver received a yellow card for time wasting in the ninetieth minute. The Whitecaps won 2-1, with Reyna picked as man of the match.

Back stateside, the Philadelphia Union host Minnesota United FC. Bobby Shuttleworth and Andre Blake draw the starts in goal. Philadelphia began in the eighth minute with a Cory Burke goal, via Borek Dockal. The Union added on with an Alejandro Bedoya goal in the seventeenth minute, coming off of Keegan Rosenberry and Dockal. Philadelphia extended the lead as Fabrice-Jean Picault scored, thanks to Rosenberry and Haris Medunjanin. The Union padded the lead with a forty-fourth minute Picault goal, assisted by C.J. Sapong. Minnesota got on the board in the fifty-fourth minute with a Darwin Quintero goal, passed from Angelo Rodriguez. Bedoya of Philadelphia had a yellow card for a foul in the fifty-sixth minute. In the seventy-second minute, yellow cards were assessed to Picault of the Union and Alexi Gomez of the Loons. Minnesota's Fernando Bob had a yellow card for his seventy-fifth minute foul. Back north, Sporting Kansas City brings in the Los Angeles Galaxy. David Bingham and Tim Melia are between the sticks. Los Angeles struck first in the twenty-fifth minute on a Zlatan Ibrahimovic penalty kick goal. Kansas City had a yellow card for a foul by Seth Sinovic in the thirty-fourth minute. Sporting had a burst of yellow cards, with Johnny Russell and Ilie Sanchez in the forty-ninth minute for a foul and dissent, respectively, and Daniel Salloi's fiftieth minute foul. Kansas City tied it in the eighty-third minute with a Johnny Russell goal, assisted by Graham Zusi. The Galaxy's Bingham had a yellow card for time wasting in the eighty-ninth minute. The final remained at 1-1, with the man of the match being Russell.

West to Colorado, where the Rapids host Los Angeles FC. Tyler Miller and Tim Howard patrol the penalty areas. Los Angeles drew first blood in the fifteenth minute with a Walker Zimmerman goal. Edgar Castillo of Colorado had a yellow card for his thirty-ninth minute foul. The Black and Gold added on in the forty-second minute with an Adama Diomande goal, helped along by Lee Nguyen. Los Angeles extended the lead as Diomande scored again in the forty-eighth minute, thanks to Aaron Kovar and Benny Feilhaber. Shkelzen Gashi of the Rapids received a yellow card for a fifty-third minute foul, as did teammates Kellyn Acosta in the seventy-seventh minute and Niki Jackson in the eighty-first minute. The final remained at 3-0, with Diomande's brace making him the man of the match.

In Utah, Real Salt Lake welcomes the Portland Timbers. Steve Clark and Nick Rimando are the veterans in goal. Portland had a yellow card for a foul by Diego Chara in the twenty-sixth minute. The Timbers cracked the scoresheet in the thirty-third minute with a Jeremy Ebobisse goal, via Sebastian Blanco. David Guzman of Portland had a yellow card for dissent in the fifty-fifth minute. Salt Lake tied it on a Jefferson Savarino goal in the fifty-fifth minute, set up by Joao Plata. Real saw yellow cards for a foul by Kyle Beckerman in the fifty-eighth minute and a dive by Sunny in the sixty-sixth minute. The Timbers retook the lead with a Blanco goal in the seventieth minute. Portland added on with a Blanco goal in the seventy-third minute, helped along by Diego Valeri and Ebobisse. The Timbers extended the lead as Lucas Melano scored in the eighty-eighth minute. Valeri of Portland had a yellow card for dissent in stoppage time. The Timbers won 4-1, with Blanco the clear man of the match.

Saturday ends with the San Jose Earthquakes bringing in the New York Red Bulls. Luis Robles and James Marcinkowski play in goal. New York kicked off the scoring in the twenty-ninth minute with an Alex Muyl goal. The Red Bulls added on with a Bradley Wright-Phillips goal in the thirty-second minute. New York extended the lead as Aaron Long scored in the fiftieth minute, thanks to Tim Parker and Marc Rzatkowski. Cristian Casseres, Jr. of the Red Bulls had a yellow card for an eightieth minute foul. San Jose got on the board in the eighty-third minute with a Chris Wondolowski goal, made possible by Florian Jungwirth. The final remained at 3-1, with the man of the match being Muyl for the opener.

On Sunday, DC United hosts the Chicago Fire. Stefan Cleveland and Bill Hamid are the keepers. Chicago dented the scoreboard in the fifty-first minute with a Raheem Edwards goal, via Aleksandar Katai. DC tied it in the sixty-second minute with a Wayne Rooney goal. The Black and Red took the lead on a Rooney penalty kick goal in the eighty-first minute. The Fire's Bastian Schweinsteiger received a yellow card for dangerous play in stoppage time. DC won 2-1, with Rooney as the man of the match. 

Finally, Monday Night Futbol sees the Seattle Sounders FC host the Houston Dynamo. Joe Willis and Stefan Frei man the nets. Seattle was first to score in the eighteenth minute with a Will Bruin goal, set up by Cristian Roldan and Nouhou. The Sounders added on with a Roldan goal in the thirty-fourth minute, made possible by Nicolas Lodeiro. Juan Cabezas of Houston had a yellow card for his fifty-fifth minute foul. Seattle extended the lead as Victor Rodriguez scored, thanks to Kelvin Leerdam. The Sounders padded the lead on another Rodriguez goal, helped along by Handwalla Bwana. Leonardo of the Dynamo received a yellow card for an eighty-seventh minute foul. Houston got on the board in the eighty-seventh minute with a DaMarcus Beasley goal, assisted by Arturo Alvarez and Tomas Martinez. This made it 4-1, the final, with Rodriguez selected as man of the match.

Three games on Sunday to close the first weekend of the season. First up...

The Carolina Hurricanes host the New York Rangers. Alexandar Georgiev and Petr Mrazek play in goal. New York began in the first period with a Jimmy Vesey goal, assisted by Kevin Hayes and Jesper Fast. The Rangers added on with a Chris Kreider goal, passed from Brett Howden and Vladislav Namestnikov. Carolina got on the board with a Warren Foegele goal, coming off of Justin Williams and Martin Necas. The Hurricanes tied it with a Jordan Martinook goal, his second of the season, fueled by Williams and Jordan Staal. New York regained the lead in the second period with another Vesey goal, via Brady Skjei and Filip Chytil. Carolina tied it again with a Staal goal, his second of the year, helped along by Foegele and Jaccob Slavin. The Rangers pulled ahead with a Pavel Buchnevich power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Tony DeAngelo and Hayes. The Hurricanes equalized again with a Micheal Ferland goal, his second of the year, with a lone assist by Justin Faulk. New York took the lead once more with a Kreider goal, his second of the game, made possible by DeAngelo and Fast. Carolina retied it on a Lucas Wallmark goal, guided in by Martinook and Andrei Svechnikov. The Hurricanes finally took a lead of their own on a Svechnikov goal, with helpers from Faulk and Calvin de Haan. Carolina extended the lead as Foegele scored his second of the game, with the help of Williams, who got a sock trick, and Staal. The Hurricanes capped it at 8-5 with a Teuvo Teravainen power play empty net goal, set up by Sebastian Aho and Ferland. The Maple Leafs tied it with a Matthews goal, his fourth of the season, helped along by Kapanen. The Maple Leafs pulled ahead again with a Tavares power play goal, his second of the game and third of the season, powered by Mitchell Marner and Rielly. The Blackhawks equalized in the third period on a Brandon Manning goal, passed from Brent Seabrook and Chris Kunitz. Toronto restored the lead when Tavares finished his hat trick on his fourth of the year, assisted by Marner. Chicago tied it again with a Patrick Kane goal, his third of the season, guided in by Jokiharju and Nick Schmaltz. The Maple Leafs surged ahead on a Matthews goal, his second of the game and fifth of the year, with assists provided by Patrick Marleau and Jake Gardiner. The Blackhawks pulled even on a Kane goal, his second of the game and fourth of the season, fueled by Jokiharju, who got a sock trick, and Schmaltz. Toronto won 7-6 in overtime with a Rielly goal, his second of the year, dished from Marleau and Matthews. The three stars were awarded to Matthews, Tavares, and Kane, while Kapanen, Marleau, Marner, Rielly, Schmaltz, Jokiharju, Kohun, and Keith all get honorable mentions.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings bring in the Detroit Red Wings. Jonathan Bernier and Jack Campbell are the backups in goal. Los Angeles got going in the second period with an Anze Kopitar goal, his second of the season, via Ilya Kovalchuk and Jake Muzzin. Detroit tied it on an Anthony Mantha power play goal, powered by Andreas Athanasiou and Dennis Cholowski. The Kings took the lead back with a Paul LaDue goal, coming off of Tyler Toffoli. Los Angeles added on in the third period with an Alex Iafallo goal, courtesy of Kovalchuk. The Red Wings got one back with a Dylan Larkin power play goal, with assists provided by Gustav Nyquist and Cholowski. The Kings iced it at 4-2 with an empty net goal by Iafallo, his second of the game, set up by Toffoli and Alec Martinez. The three stars were Iafallo, Kovalchuk, and Toffoli, while Cholowski gets an honorable mention.

NHL 2018/19 - Day 4

We're back for the first Saturday games of the season, totaling twelve on the day. First up...

The New Jersey Devils are the listed host against the Edmonton Oilers in Gothenburg, Sweden. Cam Talbot and Keith Kinkaid make the starts in goal. New Jersey led off in the first period with a Kyle Palmieri goal, via Damon Severson. Edmonton tied it on a Milan Lucic power play goal, powered by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The Devils retook the lead in the second period with a Palmieri power play goal, his second of the game, coming off of Will Butcher and Nico Hischier. New Jersey added on with a Travis Zajac goal, with a lone helper by Miles Wood. The Devils extended the lead in the third period as Zajac scored his second of the game, with the help of Woods again. The Oilers pulled back on a Draisaitl goal, made possible by Lucic and McDavid. New Jersey capped it at 5-2 with a Stefan Noesen empty net goal, set up by Sami Vatanen and Mirco Mueller.

At the regular times, the Buffalo Sabres welcome the New York Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist and Carter Hutton man the nets. Buffalo began in the first period with a Conor Sheary power play goal, powered by Rasmus Ristolainen and Casey Mittelstadt. The Sabres added on in the second period with another Sheary power play goal, coming off of Sam Reinhart and Jack Eichel. New York got on the board in the third period with a Brett Howden goal, via Adam McQuaid and Ryan Spooner. Buffalo finished it at 3-1 with an unassisted empty net goal by Eichel. The three stars were Sheary, Hutton (43 for 44 in saves), and Eichel.

Down in Dallas, the Stars bring in the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Ben Bishop guard the cages. Dallas opened in the first period with an Alexander Radulov goal, his second of the season, made possible by Tyler Seguin and Connor Carrick. The Stars added on with a Seguin power play goal, powered by Jamie Benn and Jason Spezza. Winnipeg got on the board with a Kyle Connor goal in the second period, his second of the year, via Josh Morrissey and Jacob Trouba. Dallas replied with a Benn power play goal, with helpers from Spezza and Radulov. The Stars extended the lead as Benn scored another power play goal in the third period, thanks to Seguin and John Klingberg. Dallas padded the lead on a Seguin goal, his second of the game, fueled by Radulov. The final held at 5-1, with the three stars awarded to Benn, Radulov, and Seguin, while Spezza and Bishop (32 for 33 in saves) get the honorable mentions.

Northeast again, as the New York Islanders host the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros and Thomas Greiss are the backups in goal. Nashville started in the first period with a Viktor Arvidsson goal, via Filip Forsberg and P.K. Subban. New York tied it on a Mathew Barzal goal, assisted by Josh Bailey. The Predators retook the lead with a Mattias Ekholm goal, passed from Subban and Colton Sissons. The Islanders tied it again in the second period with a Valtteri Filppula goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Tanner Fritz and Luca Sbisa. Nashville pulled ahead again with a Craig Smith goal, helped along by Kyle Turris and Ryan Ellis. The Predators added on with an Arvidsson goal, his second of the game, fueled by Ryan Johansen and Anthony Bitetto. New York got one back with an Anders Lee power play goal, powered by Bailey and Barzal. This only made it 4-3, the eventual final, with the three stars given to Arvidsson, Subban, and Barzal, while Bailey gets an honorable mention.

Over in Pittsburgh, the Penguins welcome the Montreal Canadiens. Carey Price and Mayy Murray protect the nets. Montreal kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Brendan Gallagher goal, coming off of Tomas Tatar and Phillip Danault. The Canadiens added on with a Paul Byron goal, guided in by Artturi Lehkonen and Jeff Petry. Montreal extended the lead as Byron scored again in the second period, thanks to Max Domi and Lehkonen. The Canadiens padded the lead on a Joel Armia shorthanded goal, set up by Byron and Petry. Pittsburgh got on the board with a Riley Sheahan goal, assisted by Kris Letang and Daniel Sprong. Montreal answered in the third period with a Charles Hudon goal, with a lone assist by Andrew Shaw. This produced the 5-1 final score, with the three stars being Byron, Lehkonen, and Petry.

Way to the south, a Florida battle has the Tampa Bay Lightning bringing in the Florida Panthers. Roberto Luongo and Andrei Vasilevskiy are between the pipes. Florida struck first in the first period with a Jacob MacDonald goal, helped along by Vincent Trocheck and Jonathan Huberdeau. Luongo exited the game injured in the middle of the second period. Tampa Bay tied it in the third period with a shorthanded Anthony Cirelli goal, set up by Ryan McDonagh. In the shootout, J.T. Miller and Nikita Kucherov secured the 2-1 win for the Lightning. The three stars went to Cirelli, Vasilevskiy (42 for 43 in saves), and McDonagh.

In Canada, the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Ottawa Senators. Craig Anderson and Frederik Andersen are the similarly named goalies. Ottawa began in the first period with a Dylan DeMelo goal, coming off of Zack Smith and Thomas Chabot. Toronto tied it in the second period on a Morgan Rielly goal, helped along by Mitchell Marner and Zach Hyman. The Maple Leafs took the lead with an Auston Matthews goal, his third of the season, assisted by Patrick Marleau and Tyler Ennis. The Senators retied it with a Chabot goal, passed from Mikkel Boedker and Smith. Ottawa pulled ahead with a Chris Tierney goal, fueled by Ryan Dzingel. Toronto retied it on a Marner power play goal, powered by Matthews and Rielly. The Senators regained the lead in the third period with another Chabot goal, made possible by Bobby Ryan and the goalie Anderson. Ottawa iced it at 5-3 with a Mark Stone empty net goal, set up by Matt Duchene. The three stars were awarded to Chabot, Marner, and Matthews, while Smith and Rielly get the honorable mentions.

Back stateside, the St. Louis Blues welcome the Chicago Blackhawks. Cam Ward and Jake Allen are in the creases. St. Louis led off in the first period with a Colton Parayko power play goal, powered by Pat Maroon and Ryan O'Reilly. The Blues added on with a Vladimir Tarasenko goal, with a lone assist by O'Reilly. Chicago got on the board with a Jonathan Toews goal, his second of the season, via Erik Gustafsson and Alex DeBrincat. The Blackhawks tied it in the second period with a Patrick Kane goal, his second of the year, fueled by Nick Schmaltz. Chicago pulled ahead with a Marcus Kruger goal, helped along by Kane and Schmaltz. St. Louis retied it in the third period with a Tarasenko power play goal, his second of the game, with assists provided by Maroon and O'Reilly, the latter earning a sock trick. The Blues went ahead on a Chris Butler goal, guided in by Jaden Schwartz. The Blackhawks tied it again with another Toews goal, his second of the game and third of the season, courtesy of Henri Jokiharju and DeBrincat. Chicago won 5-4 in overtime with a Toews goal to complete a hat trick, with a lone helper by Brandon Saad. The three stars belonged to Toews, Kane, and Tarasenko, while Schmaltz, DeBrincat, O'Reilly, and Maroon get the honorable mentions.

Up in Minnesota, the Wild bring in the Vegas Golden Knights. Marc-Andre Fleury and Devan Dubnyk tend the twines. Minnesota opened in the first period with a Matt Dumba goal, made possible by Charlie Coyle. Vegas tied it in the third period with a Max Pacioretty goal, assisted by Jonathan Marchessault and Colin Miller. The tie went to a shootout, where Erik Haula gave the Golden Knights a 2-1 win on his lone tally. The three stars were Fleury (29 for 30 in saves), Dubnyk (41 for 42 in saves), and Pacioretty.

Southwest to Colorado, where the Avalanche host the Philadelphia Flyers. Brian Elliott and Semyon Varlamov are the average goalies. Colorado started in the first period with a Colin Wilson goal, coming off of Alexander Kerfoot and Erik Johnson. Philadelphia tied it with a Sean Couturier goal, made possible by Travis Konecny and Claude Giroux. The Avalanche retook the lead with a J.T. Compher goal, his second of the season, assisted by Samuel Girard. The Flyers tied it again in the second period with a Mikhail Vorobyev goal, going in unassisted. Colorado regained the lead with a Gabriel Landeskog goal, guided in by Nathan MacKinnon and Johnson. The Avalanche added on with a Wilson power play goal in the third period, his second of the game, powered by Carl Soderberg and Kerfoot. Colorado finished with a 5-2 win on a MacKinnon empty net goal, his second of the year, set up by Mikko Rantanen and Johnson, the latter earning a sock trick. The three stars were Wilson, Johnson, and MacKinnon, while Kerfoot takes the honorable mention.

Down in Arizona, the Coyotes welcome the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Antti Raanta have the green light to start in goal. Anaheim got going in the second period with a Max Comtois goal, via Cam Fowler and Jakob Silfverberg. This was the only goal in the Ducks' 1-0 win, with the three stars given to Gibson (41 save shutout), Comtois, and Raanta (19 for 20 in saves).

Finally, the Calgary Flames bring in the Vancouver Canucks. Jacob Markstrom and Mike Smith are the goalies. Calgary drew first blood in the first period with an Elias Lindholm goal, via T.J. Brodie and Mark Giordano. Vancouver tied it on an Elias Pettersson goal, his second of the season, coming off of Nikolay Goldobin and Loui Eriksson. The Canucks took the lead with a shorthanded and unassisted Brandon Sutter goal. The Flames retied it on a Giordano goal, fueled by Brodie and Lindholm. Vancouver pulled ahead again in the second period with a Pettersson power play goal, his second of the game and third of the year, powered by Alexander Edler and Bo Horvat. Calgary tied it again with a Johnny Gaudreau power play goal, with assists provided by Sean Monahan and Matthew Tkachuk. The Canucks took the lead again with a Horvat power play goal, with helpers from Pettersson and Edler. The Flames tied it once again with a Monahan power play goal, his second of the season, guided in by Gaudreau and Tkachuk. Calgary took the lead with a Lindholm power play goal, his second of the game, helped along by Gaudreau and Tkachuk. The Flames added on with an Austin Czarnik empty net goal, set up by Giordano. Calgary iced it at 7-4 with a shorthanded and unassisted Michael Frolik goal into an empty net. The three stars went to Lindholm, Pettersson, and Gaudreau, while Giordano, Brodie, Horvat, Monahan, Edler, and Tkachuk get the honorable mentions.

NHL 2018/19 - Day 3

Just a pair of games on tonight in a slow day of hockey. We begin with...

The Columbus Blue Jackets welcoming the Carolina Hurricanes. Curtis McElhinney is mismatched with Sergei Bobrovsky in goal. Carolina opened in the first period with a Jordan Martinook goal, via Andrei Svechnikov. Columbus tied it on a Brandon Dubinsky goal, passed from David Savard. The Hurricanes retook the lead in the second period with a Sebastian Aho goal, coming off of Teuvo Teravainen and Micheal Ferland. Carolina added on in the third period with a Ferland goal, with a lone assist from Aho. This stood for a 3-1 win, with the three stars awarded to Aho, McElhinney (31 for 32 in saves), and Ferland.

On the west coast, the Los Angeles Kings bring in the San Jose Sharks. Martin Jones and Jonathan Quick are the masked men. San Jose started in the first period with a Timo Meier goal, courtesy of Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Joe Thornton. The Sharks added on with an Evander Kane goal, his second of the season, via Antti Suomela and Joonas Donskoi. Los Angeles got on the board with an Anze Kopitar goal, assisted by Alex Iafallo and Derek Forbort. The Kings tied it in the second period on a Tyler Toffoli goal, guided in by Tanner Pearson. San Jose won 3-2 with a Kevin Labanc goal in overtime, made possible by Logan Couture and Erik Karlsson. The three stars went to Labanc, Kane, and Meier.
