NHL 2021 - Day 48

There's seven games on the slate this time, beginning with...

The Ottawa Senators hosting the Calgary Flames. David Rittich and Matt Murray are in goal. Ottawa got going in the second period with an Artem Anisimov goal, via Tim Stutzle. The Senators added on with a Drake Batherson goal, his eighth of the season, courtesy of Josh Norris and Stutzle. Calgary got on the board with a Milan Lucic power play goal, his sixth of the year, powered by Mikael Backlund. Ottawa replied with an unassisted Batherson goal, his second of the game and ninth of the season. The Senators extended the lead on Colin White's unassisted empty net goal in the third period, his sixth of the year. Ottawa padded the lead as Evgenii Dadonov scored his seventh of the campaign, thanks to Thomas Chabot and Nikita Zaitsev. The final stood at 5-1, with the three stars being Batherson, Stutzle, and Murray (27 for 28 in saves). 

Down in Florida, the Panthers welcome the Carolina Hurricanes. Alex Nedeljkovic and Chris Driedger make the starts in goal. Carolina began in the first period with a Brett Pesce power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Jake Bean and Martin Necas. Florida tied it in the third period with a Frank Vatrano goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Aleksander Barkov and Carter Verhaeghe. The Panthers took the lead on an Eetu Luostarinen goal, his third of the season, assisted by Mason Marchment. The Hurricanes tied it again with a Vincent Trocheck goal, his eleventh of the year, passed from Nino Niederreiter and Necas. Carolina won 3-2 in overtime with a Necas goal, his third of the campaign, guided in by Sebastian Aho and Dougie Hamilton. The three stars belonged to Necas, Trocheck, and Nedeljkovic (44 for 46 in saves). 

Back north, the Winnipeg Jets bring in the Vancouver Canucks. Thatcher Demko and Connor Hellebuyck are in the creases. Vancouver led off in the first period with a Nate Schmidt goal, his third of the season, made possible by Brandon Sutter and Adam Gaudette. The Canucks added on with a J.T. Miller goal, his fifth of the year, via Schmidt and Elias Pettersson. Vancouver extended the lead on a Nils Hoglander power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Tyler Myers and Gaudette. The Canucks iced it at 4-0 with a Pettersson empty net goal, his ninth of the year, set up by Brock Boeser. The three stars were handed to Demko (27 save shutout), Schmidt, and Gaudette, while Pettersson gets an honorable mention. 

In Nevada, the Vegas Golden Knights host the Minnesota Wild. Cam Talbot and Marc-Andre Fleury guard the cages. Vegas dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Cody Glass power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Mark Stone and Shea Theodore. Minnesota tied it on a Jordan Greenway goal, his third of the year, going in unassisted. The Wild took the lead on a Marcus Foligno goal, his fifth of the season, helped along by Jonas Brodin. The Golden Knights tied it again with a Max Pacioretty power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Stone and Chandler Stephenson. Minnesota regained the lead with a Nick Bonino goal, his second of the season, made possible by Nico Sturm and Foligno. The Wild added on with a Foligno goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year, via Zach Parise and Brodin. Vegas got one back in the third period with a Nicolas Hague goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Stone and Zach Whitecloud. The Golden Knights tied it on an Alex Tuch goal, his eighth of the year, with helpers from Stone and Pacioretty. Vegas won 5-4 in overtime with a Pacioretty goal, his tenth of the campaign, set up by Stone. The three stars were awarded to Stone, Pacioretty, and Foligno, while Brodin gets an honorable mention.

Up to Canada once more, as the Edmonton Oilers welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs. Michael Hutchinson and Mikko Koskinen are the backups in goal. Toronto started in the first period with a Zach Hyman goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Morgan Rielly and Ilya Mikheyev. The Maple Leafs added on with an unassisted William Nylander goal, his ninth of the year. Toronto extended the lead on a Rielly power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Mitchell Marner and Nylander. Mike Smith took over in goal in the second period. This stood for the eventual 3-0 final score, with the three stars given to Hutchinson (31 save shutout), Rielly, and Nylander.

Down in California, the Anaheim Ducks bring in the St. Louis Blues. Ville Husso is mismatched with John Gibson in goal. Anaheim opened in the first period with an Isac Lundestrom goal, his third of the season, coming off of Max Comtois and Cam Fowler. St. Louis tied it on a Jordan Kyrou goal, his eighth of the year, helped along by Ryan O'Reilly and Zach Sanford. The Blues took the lead in the second period with a David Perron goal, his seventh of the season, via Brayden Schenn. St. Louis added on with a Sanford power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Vince Dunn and Justin Faulk. The Blues extended the lead as Dakota Joshua scored, thanks to Kyle Clifford and Marco Scandella. The Ducks got one back in the third period with a Lundestrom goal, his second of the game and fourth of the season, assisted by Rickard Rakell. Anaheim got closer as Lundestrom completed his hat trick on his fifth of the year, with the help of Kevin Shattenkirk and Rakell. The Blues fired back with a Sanford shorthanded empty net goal, his sixth of the season, going in unassisted. The Ducks pulled one back with a Ryan Getzlaf power play goal, his second of the year, with assists provided by Jakob Silfverberg and Fowler. This only made it 5-4, the final, with the three stars being Sanford, Lundestrom, and Fowler, while Rakell gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks host the Colorado Avalanche. Philipp Grubauer and Martin Jones man the nets. Colorado struck first in the first period with a Samuel Girard goal, his third of the season, assisted by Andre Burakovsky and Devon Toews. The Avalanche added on in the second period with a Gabriel Landeskog power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Nazem Kadri and Nathan MacKinnon. San Jose got on the board with a Radim Simek goal, via Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Rudolfs Balcers. The Sharks tied it on a Kevin Labanc goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Evander Kane and Logan Couture. San Jose took the lead in the third period with a Rudolfs Balcers goal, his second of the year, passed from Dylan Gambrell and Timo Meier. The Sharks extended the lead as Erik Karlsson scored on the power play, thanks to Kane and Meier. San Jose padded the lead on a John Leonard goal, his third of the season, made possible by Meier. The Sharks iced it at 6-2 with a Kane empty net goal, his eighth of the year, set up by Brent Burns. The three stars were Kane, Meier, and Balcers.

NHL 2021 - Day 47

Six games on a Sunday, beginning with...

The New York Rangers hosting the Boston Bruins. Tuukka Rask and Alexandar Georgiev are the goalies. Boston began in the first period with a Charlie Coyle goal, his fourth of the season, via David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy. The Bruins added on with a Trent Frederic goal, his second of the year, courtesy of Connor Clifton and Jack Studnicka. Boston extended the lead as McAvoy scored his third of the season, thanks to Pastrnak and Brad Marchand in the second period. New York got on the board in the third period with a Colin Blackwell goal, his fifth of the year, passed from Alexis Lafreniere and K'Andre Miller. The Bruins iced it at 4-1 with a Coyle shorthanded empty net goal, his fifth of the campaign, set up by Sean Kuraly. The three stars were Coyle, Pastrnak, and McAvoy. 

Along to Buffalo, as the Sabres welcome the Philadelphia Flyers. Carter Hart and Jonas Johansson are in the blue paint. Down in New Jersey, the Devils bring in the Washington Capitals. Ilya Samsonov and MacKenzie Blackwood are the young goalies. New Jersey led off in the first period with a Mikhail Maltsev goal, his second of the season, coming off of P.K. Subban and Pavel Zacha. Washington tied it on a Jakub Vrana goal, his seventh of the year, guided in by Tom Wilson and Brenden Dillon. The Capitals took the lead in the second period with a Nicklas Backstrom goal, his tenth of the season, courtesy of Wilson and Vrana. The Devils tied it again on a Yegor Sharangovich goal, his third of the year, helped along by Miles Wood and Travis Zajac. Washington regained the lead with an Alex Ovechkin goal, his seventh of the campaign, with helpers from Lars Eller and Nick Jensen. This held up for a 3-2 win, with the three stars being Vrana, Wilson, and Ovechkin. 

Along to Nashville as the Predators host the Columbus Blue Jackets. Joonas Korpisalo and Juuse Saros are the Finnish goalies. Columbus started in the first period with a Kevin Stenlund goal, his fourth of the season, via Riley Nash and Seth Jones. Nashville tied it on a Nick Cousins goal, his second of the year, made possible by Viktor Arvidsson and Ryan Johansen. The Predators took the lead in the second period with an Eeli Tolvanen power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Filip Forsberg and Roman Josi. Nashville added on in the third period with a shorthanded and unassisted Erik Haula goal, his second of the year. This stood for a 3-1 win, with the three stars being Tolvanen, Saros (28 for 29 in saves), and Haula. 

Back northeast, the New York Islanders welcome the Pittsburgh Penguins. Casey DeSmith and Ilya Sorokin are in the creases. New York opened in the first period with an Oliver Wahlstrom power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Nick Leddy and Josh Bailey. The Islanders added on with a Jean-Gabriel Pageau power play goal, his ninth of the year, with assists provided by Bailey and Wahlstrom in the second period. This held for a 2-0 win, with the three stars being Sorokin (20 save shutout), Wahlstrom, and Bailey. 

Finally, the Chicago Blackhawks bring in the Detroit Red Wings. Thomas Greiss and Kevin Lankinen are the masked men. Chicago struck first in the first period with a Nikita Zadorov goal, fueled by David Kampf. The Blackhawks added on with a Ryan Carpenter goal, his second of the season, via Ian Mitchell and Matthew Highmore. Detroit got on the board with a Sam Gagner goal, his fourth of the year, guided in by Jon Merrill and Vladislav Namestnikov. Chicago replied in the third period with a Pius Suter goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat. The Blackhawks extended the lead with a Carpenter power play goal, his second of the game and third of the year, powered by DeBrincat and Adam Boqvist. Chicago padded the lead as Kane scored his eleventh of the season, with the help of DeBrincat. The Red Wings got one back with an Evgeny Svechnikov power play goal, his second of the year, with assists provided by Filip Hronek and Adam Erne. Philadelphia started in the first period with a Sean Couturier goal, his fourth of the season, via Travis Sanheim. The Flyers added on in the second period with a Shayne Gostisbehere goal, his second of the year, fueled by James van Riemsdyk and Couturier. Philadelphia extended the lead as Scott Laughton scored his fifth of the campaign, thanks to Oskar Lindblom and Jakub Voracek. This made it 3-0, the final, with the three stars going to Couturier, Elliott (23 save shutout), and Gostisbehere. 

Along to New Jersey, where the Devils welcome the Washington Capitals. Vitek Vanecek and MacKenzie Blackwood play in goal. Washington opened in the first period with a Garnet Hathaway goal, his third of the season, courtesy of Justin Schultz and Carl Hagelin. The Capitals added on with a Daniel Sprong goal, his third of the year, passed from Brenden Dillon and John Carlson. Washington extended the lead as Lars Eller scored his fourth of the season, with the help of Conor Sheary. New Jersey got on the board with a Nico Hischier power play goal, his second of the year, powered by P.K. Subban and Jack Hughes. The Devils got closer in the second period with a Pavel Zacha goal, his sixth of the season, made possible by Hischier and Ty Smith. The Capitals answered in the third period with a Jakub Vrana goal, his sixth of the year, helped along by Carlson and Tom Wilson. Just three games on this Friday, beginning with...

The New York Rangers hosting the Boston Bruins. Tuukka Rask and Alexandar Georgiev get the starts in goal. New York opened in the first period with a Julien Gauthier goal, his second of the season, made possible by Ryan Lindgren. The Rangers added on in the second period with a Ryan Strome goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Alexis Lafreniere and Chris Kreider. Boston got on the board with a Patrice Bergeron goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand. New York replied with a Colin Blackwell power play goal, his fourth of the year, powered by Adam Fox and Strome. The Rangers extended the lead as Kreider scored his ninth of the season, thanks to Strome. New York padded the lead in the third period with a Pavel Buchnevich goal, his fifth of the year, fueled by Fox and Lindgren. The Rangers kept going with a Jonny Brodzinski goal, helped along by Kevin Rooney and Brendan Smith. The Bruins pulled one back on a Marchand goal, his tenth of the campaign, with helpers from Pastrnak and Jakub Zboril. Los Angeles got on the board with a Jeff Carter goal in the third period, his fourth of the year, passed from Andreas Athanasiou and Gabriel Vilardi. The three stars of the 3-1 game were Bjugstad, Talbot (27 for 28 in saves), and Eriksson Ek.

Finally, the Arizona Coyotes bring in the Colorado Avalanche. Hunter Miska and Adin Hill are the backups in goal. Ten games on tonight, beginning with...

The New York Islanders hosting the Boston Bruins. Jaroslav Halak and Semyon Varlamov are the veterans in goal. Boston led off in the first period with a Nick Ritchie goal, his seventh of the season, via Jakub Zboril and Charlie Coyle. New York tied it with an Adam Pelech unassisted goal. The Islanders took the lead with a Mathew Barzal goal, his seventh of the year, assisted by Nick Leddy and the goalie Varlamov. The Bruins tied it again in the second period with a Craig Smith goal, his fourth of the season, guided in by Jake DeBrusk and Urho Vaakanainen. New York took the lead with an Anthony Beauvillier goal, going in unassisted. The Islanders added on with a Jordan Eberle goal, his eighth of the year, helped along by Barzal and Anders Lee. New York extended the lead with a shorthanded Jean-Gabriel Pageau goal, his eighth of the season, set up Pelech. The Islanders padded the lead as Lee scored his ninth of the year, thanks to Noah Dobson and Leddy. New York continued with an Oliver Wahlstrom goal, his second of the campaign, coming off of Ryan Pulock and Casey Cizikas. Chicago dented the scoreboard in the third period with a Patrick Kane goal, his tenth of the season, assisted by Alex DeBrincat and Calvin de Haan. The Blackhawks iced it at 2-0 with a Carl Soderberg empty net goal, his fourth of the year, going in unassisted. The three stars were Subban (27 save shutout), Kane, and Korpisalo (25 for 26 in saves).

South to Tampa Bay, as the Lightning welcome the Carolina Hurricanes. James Reimer and Curtis McElhinney are the experienced goalies. North again to DC, as the Washington Capitals bring in the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tristan Jarry and Vitek Vanecek draw the starts. Washington opened in the first period with a Nicklas Backstrom goal, his ninth of the season, passed from Nick Jensen and Jakub Vrana. The Capitals added on in the third period with a T.J. Oshie goal, his fifth of the year, via Lars Eller and John Carlson. Pittsburgh got on the board with a shorthanded and unassisted Brandon Tanev goal, his fifth of the season. The Penguins tied the game on a Jake Guentzel goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Kris Letang and Sidney Crosby. Washington took the lead on a Tom Wilson power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Carlson and Alex Ovechkin. The Capitals added on with a Carl Hagelin empty net goal, his second of the year, going in unassisted. Washington extended the lead as Eller scored an empty net goal, his third of the campaign, with the help of Oshie and Backstrom. The final was 5-2, with the three stars given to Oshie, Carlson, and Backstrom, while Eller gets an honorable mention.

In Canada, the Ottawa Senators host the Calgary Flames. David Rittich and Matt Murray are the masked men. The Senators added on with an Erik Gudbranson goal, coming off of Chris Tierney. Ottawa replied with a Connor Brown goal, his fifth of the season, going in unassisted. The Senators extended the lead as Erik Brannstrom scored his second of the year, an unassisted goal. Artyom Zagidulin replaced Rittich in goal. Ottawa padded the lead in the third period on a Colin White goal, his third of the season, passed from Nick Paul. The Senators continued with a White goal, his second of the game and fourth of the year, helped along by Thomas Chabot and Evgenii Dadonov. This stood for a 6-1 win, with the three stars handed to White, Murray (29 for 30 in saves), and Gudbranson.

Back stateside, the Detroit Red Wings welcome the Nashville Predators. Pekka Rinne and Jonathan Bernier are between the pipes. Detroit kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Luke Glendening goal, his second of the season, coming off of Filip Zadina and Darren Helm. Nashville tied it on a Mikael Granlund power play goal, his fourth of the year, powered by Roman Josi and Eeli Tolvanen. The Red Wings retook the lead in the second period with a Sam Gagner goal, assisted by Bobby Ryan. The Predators tied it in the third period with an Erik Haula goal, courtesy of Ryan Ellis and Luke Kunin. Detroit reclaimed the lead with another Gagner goal, his second of the game, fueled by Ryan and Danny DeKeyser. The Red Wings added on with an Adam Erne goal, his second of the season, guided in by Helm and Glendening. Detroit finished it at 5-2 with a Gagner empty net goal to complete his hat trick, going in unassisted. The three stars were Gagner, Ryan, and Helm, while Glendening gets an honorable mention.

Crossing the border again, the Winnipeg Jets bring in the Montreal Canadiens. Carey Price and Connor Hellebuyck tend the twines. Montreal drew first blood in the first period with a Joel Armia goal, his third of the season, via Alexander Romanov and Paul Byron. The Canadiens added on with another Armia goal, his second of the game and fourth of the year, assisted by Jonathan Drouin and Jeff Petry. Winnipeg got on the board in the second period with a Kyle Connor power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele. Montreal responded with a Tomas Tatar power play goal, his fifth of the year, with assists provided by Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Petry. The Jets fired back on a Connor goal, his second of the game and tenth of the season, fueled by Paul Stastny and Nikolaj Ehlers. Tampa Bay led off in the first period with a Ross Colton goal, via Victor Hedman and Alex Killorn. The Lightning added on with a Blake Coleman power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Yanni Gourde and Pat Maroon. Tampa Bay iced it at 3-0 with a Barclay Goodrow empty net goal, his fourth of the year, set up by Killorn in the third period. The three stars were Vasilevskiy (25 save shutout), Colton, and Killorn.

The Maple Leafs won 2-1 in overtime with a Nylander goal, his second of the game and seventh of the campaign, fueled by Matthews and Justin Holl. The Wild responded with a Hartman goal, his third of the year, with helpers from Kaprizov and Zuccarello. Minnesota extended the lead as Nico Sturm scored, thanks to Nick Bjugstad and Nick Bonino. The Coyotes got closer with a Jakob Chychrun goal, his fifth of the year, helped along by Conor Garland and Phil Kessel. Arizona tied it with a Kessel goal, his seventh of the season, via Garland and Ekman-Larsson. The tie lasted to a shootout, where Garland and Christian Dvorak lifted the Coyotes 4-3 over Trevor Zegras and the Ducks.
