NHL 2022-23 - Day 37

We're up for nine games today. First up...

The Buffalo Sabres host the Vancouver Canucks. Spencer Martin and Craig Anderson are set to start in goal. Vancouver led off in the first period with a Dakota Joshua goal, his third of the season, passed from Nils Aman and William Lockwood. The Canucks added on with an Ethan Bear goal, coming off of Bo Horvat and Conor Garland. Buffalo got on the board with a Jeff Skinner goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Rasmus Dahlin and Alex Tuch. Vancouver replied in the second period with an Elias Pettersson goal, his seventh of the season, assisted by Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The Sabres fired back with another Skinner goal, his second of the game and fifth of the year, helped along by Tage Thompson and Tuch. The Canucks answered with a J.T. Miller goal, his tenth of the season, a power play goal powered by Horvat. Vancouver extended the lead as Horvat scored his fourteenth of the year on the power play, thanks to Brock Boeser and Pettersson. Buffalo pulled one back with a Tuch goal, his eighth of the season, with helpers from Owen Power and Thompson. The Sabres got closer in the third period with a Casey Mittelstadt goal, his fourth of the year, courtesy of Dylan Cozens and Peyton Krebs. The final held at 5-4, with the three stars awarded to Horvat, Tuch, and Skinner, while Pettersson and Thompson get the honorable mentions.

Over in Montreal, the Canadiens welcome the New Jersey Devils. Vitek Vanecek and Jake Allen are the goalies. New Jersey got going in the second period with a Jack Hughes power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Dougie Hamilton and Jesper Bratt. The Devils added on with an unassisted Hamilton goal, his fifth of the year. Montreal got on the board with an Evgenii Dadonov goal, via Sean Monahan and David Savard. New Jersey fired back with another Hughes goal, his second of the game and seventh of the season, passed from Dawson Mercer. The Devils extended the lead in the third period as Bratt scored his sixth of the year, thanks to Hughes and Mercer. New Jersey padded the lead on a John Marino empty net goal, his second of the campaign, going in unassisted. The final was 5-1, with the three stars being Hughes, Bratt, and Hamilton, while Mercer gets an honorable mention.

Down in Tampa Bay, the Lightning bring in the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger and Brian Elliott receive the starts in goal. Tampa Bay opened in the first period with a Ross Colton goal, his fourth of the season, made possible by Vladislav Namestnikov and Philippe Myers. Dallas tied it on a Mason Marchment power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz. The Lightning took the lead back in the second period with a Nick Paul power play goal, his sixth of the season, with assists provided by Corey Perry and Colton. The Stars tied it on a Joe Pavelski power play goal, his ninth of the year, helped along by Miro Heiskanen and Jamie Benn. Dallas took the lead with a Robertson goal, his eleventh of the season, assisted by Pavelski and Heiskanen. Tampa Bay retied it with a Steven Stamkos goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Ian Cole and Alex Killorn. The Lightning took the lead with a Cole goal, coming off of Paul and Killorn. The Stars tied it on a shorthanded Radek Faksa goal, going in unassisted. Tampa Bay won 5-4 in overtime with a Killorn goal, his fifth of the campaign, fueled by Mikhail Sergachev and Stamkos. Also in Florida, the Panthers host the Washington Capitals. Darcy Kuemper and Sergei Bobrovsky protect the nets. The Panthers added on in the second period with a Sam Reinhart power play goal, his third of the year, powered by Aaron Ekblad and Matthew Tkachuk. Florida fired back in the third period with a Nick Cousins goal, his second of the year, via Gustav Forsling and Tkachuk. The Maple Leafs added on with a Mitchell Marner goal, his fourth of the year, guided in by Morgan Rielly and Tavares. Toronto extended the lead in the second period as Michael Bunting scored his third of the season, with the help of Auston Matthews and William Nylander. Pittsburgh got on the board with a Rickard Rakell goal, his seventh of the year, fueled by Jason Zucker and Evgeni Malkin. The Penguins got closer with a Sidney Crosby goal, his seventh of the season, going in unassisted. The Maple Leafs fired back on a Bunting goal, his second of the game and fourth of the year, helped along by Pontus Holmberg and Matthews. The Blue Jackets added on in the second period with a Boone Jenner power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Johnny Gaudreau and Kent Johnson. Philadelphia got on the board with a Kevin Hayes goal, his fourth of the season, helped along by Travis Konecny and Scott Laughton. The Flyers tied it on a Noah Cates goal, his third of the year, fueled by Zack MacEwen and Owen Tippett. Columbus took the lead on a Jenner goal, his second of the game and sixth of the season, going in unassisted. Down in Nashville, the Predators host the Minnesota Wild. Marc-Andre Fleury and Juuse Saros guard the cages. The Predators added on with a Duchene power play goal, his fourth of the year, powered by Johansen and Roman Josi. Minnesota got on the board with a Frederick Gaudreau goal, his third of the season, via Mats Zuccarello and Kirill Kaprizov. The final held at 2-1, with the three stars going to Duchene, Johansen, and Saros (33 for 34 in saves).

Out west, the Vegas Golden Knights welcome the San Jose Sharks. James Reimer and Logan Thompson are the masked men. Vegas dented the scoreboard in the first period with a Jack Eichel goal, his tenth of the season, via Shea Theodore and Chandler Stephenson. San Jose tied it in the second period with a Luke Kunin goal, his third of the year, guided in by Erik Karlsson and Nico Sturm.The Golden Knights retook the lead with a Jonathan Marchessault goal, his seventh of the season, fueled by Alex Pietrangelo. The Sharks retied it in the third period with a Matt Nieto goal, his second of the year, assisted by Alexander Barabanov and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. San Jose pulled ahead on a Timo Meier power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Logan Couture and Barabanov. The Sharks added on with a Couture empty net goal, his seventh of the year, set up by Tomas Hertl and Karlsson. San Jose iced it at 5-2 with a Mario Ferraro empty net goal, going in unassisted. Finally, the Anaheim Ducks bring in the Detroit Red Wings. Ville Husso and John Gibson patrol the creases. Detroit drew first blood in the first period with a Jonatan Berggren power play goal, powered by Filip Hronek and Lucas Raymond. Anaheim tied it on a Mason McTavish power play goal, his second of the season, with assists provided by Adam Henrique and Cam Fowler. The Red Wings took the lead back in the second period with a Michael Rasmussen goal, his second of the year, courtesy of David Perron and Oskar Sundqvist. The Ducks tied it in the third period with a John Klingberg goal, via Fowler and Trevor Zegras. Anaheim won 3-2 in overtime with a Ryan Strome goal, his fifth of the campaign, set up by Zegras. The three stars were Zegras, Strome, and Fowler.

The Ottawa Senators hosting the New York Islanders. Semyon Varlamov and Cam Talbot guard the cages. New York led off in the first period with an Oliver Wahlstrom power play goal, his fifth of the season, powered by Anders Lee and Mathew Barzal. Ottawa tied it in the second period with a Drake Batheron power play goal, his fifth of the year, with assists provided by Tim Stutzle and Claude Giroux. The Islanders retook the lead with a Noah Dobson goal, his fifth of the season, going in unassisted. New York added on in the third period with a Jean-Gabriel Pageau power play goal, his second of the year, helped along by Dobson and Barzal. The Senators got one back with a Giroux goal, his eighth of the season, coming off of Brady Tkachuk and Stutzle. The Islanders iced it at 4-2 with a Brock Nelson empty net goal, his ninth of the year, set up by Casey Cizikas and Cal Clutterbuck. Out west, the Calgary Flames welcome the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Quick and Jacob Markstrom protect the nets. Calgary began in the first period with a Jonathan Huberdeau goal, his second of the season, assisted by Rasmus Andersson and Noah Hanifin. Los Angeles tied it on an Arthur Kaliyev power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Viktor Arvidsson and Trevor Moore. The Kings took the lead with another Kaliyev goal, his second of the game and sixth of the season, via Blake Lizotte and Matt Roy. The Flames retied it on an Andrew Mangiapane goal, his third of the year, guided in by Milan Lucic and Nazem Kadri. Calgary took the lead on a Brett Ritchie goal, his fourth of the season, with a lone assist from Blake Coleman. The Flames added on with a Tyler Toffoli goal, his sixth of the year, coming off of Elias Lindholm and Adam Ruzicka. Calgary extended the lead in the second period as Lindholm scored his sixth of the season on the power play, thanks to Toffoli and Kadri. Los Angeles got one back with a Kevin Fiala goal, his sixth of the year, courtesy of Alexander Edler and Rasmus Kupari. The Flames fired back with a Ruzicka goal, his second of the season, fueled by Lindholm and Toffoli. Backtracking to Chicago, as the Blackhawks bring in the Carolina Hurricanes. Pyotr Kochetkov and Petr Mrazek are set to start in goal. Carolina struck first in the first period with a Jordan Martinook goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Brent Burns and Jordan Staal. The Hurricanes added on with a Staal goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Burns and Martinook. Carolina extended the lead in the second period as Andrei Svechnikov scored his twelfth of the campaign, thanks to Jesper Fast. This stood for a 3-0 win, with the three stars awarded to Kochetkov (27 save shutout), Martinook, and Staal, while Burns gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Colorado Avalanche host the St. Louis Blues. Jordan Binnington and Alexandar Georgiev are the masked men. Colorado got going in the second period with a Mikko Rantanen goal, his eleventh of the season, via Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar. St. Louis tied it on a Robert Thomas goal, his third of the year, coming off of Pavel Buchnevich and Vladimir Tarasenko. Six games on for a Sunday, beginning with one matinee as...

The Philadelphia Flyers host the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger faces a lesser foe in Felix Sandstrom in goal. Dallas began in the first period with a Matej Blumel goal, assisted by Tyler Seguin and Esa Lindell. The Stars added on with a Lindell goal, his second of the season, via Jason Robertson and Joe Pavelski. Philadelphia got on the board in the second period with a Travis Konecny goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Kevin Hayes and Owen Tippett. Dallas replied with a Pavelski power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Miro Heiskanen and Jamie Benn. The Stars extended the lead in the third period with a Luke Glendening shorthanded goal, his second of the year, set up by Ty Dellandrea and Lindell. Dallas padded the lead as Robertson scored his tenth of the season on the power play, with the help of Pavelski and Roope Hintz. The final was 5-1, with the three stars going to Lindell, Pavelski, and Robertson. 

Over in Boston, the Bruins welcome the Vancouver Canucks. Thatcher Demko and Linus Ullmark guard the cages. Boston added on in the second period with a Pavel Zacha goal, his third of the year, guided in by Lindholm and Clifton. The Bruins extended the lead as Brad Marchand scored his fifth of the season on the power play, thanks to Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy. The Canucks got one back in the third period with an unassisted Sheldon Dries power play goal. The Sharks tied it with a Nico Sturm goal, his sixth of the campaign, passed from Erik Karlsson and Vlasic. The tie went to a shootout, where Alexander Barabanov and Nick Bonino lifted the Sharks to 3-2 win over Kaprizov and the Wild. The three stars were Vlasic, Kaprizov, and Sturm.

Back east, the New York Rangers host the Arizona Coyotes. Connor Ingram is mismatched with Igor Shesterkin in goal. New York got going in the second period with a Barclay Goodrow goal, his fourth of the season, going in unassisted. The Rangers added on with an Adam Fox goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Filip Chytil and Artemi Panarin. New York extended the lead in the third period on a Chris Kreider power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Mika Zibanejad and Adam Fox. Arizona got on the board with a Clayton Keller power play goal, his sixth of the year, with assists provided by Nick Ritchie and Travis Boyd. The Rangers finished it at 4-1 with a Ryan Carpenter goal, fueled by Braden Schneider and Jimmy Vesey.

Seattle struck first in the first period with a Jordan Eberle power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Vince Dunn and Andre Burakovsky. Winnipeg tied it in the second period on a Mark Scheifele power play goal, his ninth of the year, helped along by Sam Gagner and Kyle Connor. The Kraken retook the lead with a Brandon Tanev goal, his fourth of the season, via Oliver Bjorkstrand and Yanni Gourde in the third period. The Jets tied it on a Blake Wheeler power play goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Connor and Neal Pionk. Winnipeg won 3-2 in overtime with a Scheifele goal, his second of the game and tenth of the campaign, helped along by Josh Morrissey. The three stars were Scheifele, Connor, and Wheeler.

The Oilers iced it at 4-2 with a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins empty net goal, his eighth of the year, set up by Connor McDavid and Jesse Puljujarvi.

The Blue Jackets took the lead back with an Emil Bemstrom goal, via Gustav Nyquist and Bean. The Islanders tied it again on another Nelson goal, his second of the game and eighth of the year, guided in by Anders Lee and Aho. Columbus gained the lead with a Marcus Bjork goal, assisted by Bemstrom and Nyquist. New York tied it as Mayfield scored his fourth of the season, thanks to Mathew Barzal and Oliver Wahlstrom. The Islanders won 4-3 in overtime with a Zach Parise goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Adam Pelech. The three stars were Mayfield, Bemstrom, and Nelson, while Aho, Nyquist, and Bean get the honorable mentions. 

Southwest to Nashville, where the Predators welcome the New York Rangers. Jaroslav Halak and Juuse Saros are between the pipes. Nashville kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Juuso Parssinen goal, made possible by Filip Forsberg and Mikael Granlund. The Predators took the lead with a Mark Jankowski goal, his second of the season, via Roman Josi in the second period. New York got on the board with a Filip Chytil goal, his fourth of the year, courtesy of Adam Fox and Kaapo Kakko. This only made it 2-1, the eventual final, with the three stars being Saros (34 for 35 in saves), Jankowski, and Parssinen. 

Out west, the Colorado Avalanche bring in the Carolina Hurricanes. Antti Raanta and Pavel Francouz make the starts in goal. Colorado drew first blood in the first period with a Cale Makar power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche added on with a Makar goal, his second of the game and third of the year, via Rantanen and Artturi Lehkonen. Carolina got on the board in the second period with a Jordan Staal goal, his third of the season, made possible by Jordan Martinook and Jesper Fast. Colorado answered in the third period with a MacKinnon goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Rantanen and Devon Toews. The Avalanche iced it at 4-1 with an empty net goal by Rantanen, his tenth of the campaign, going in unassisted. The three stars were Rantanen, Makar, and MacKinnon. 

Up in Calgary, the Flames host the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Jacob Markstrom tend the twines. Calgary led off in the first period with an Elias Lindholm goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Adam Ruzicka and Rasmus Andersson. Winnipeg tied it on a Neal Pionk goal, his fourth of the year, via Josh Morrissey. The Flames took the lead back with a Ruzicka goal, assisted by Lindholm and Andersson. The Jets tied it in the second period with a Pierre-Luc Dubois goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Morrissey and Pionk. Calgary regained the lead on a Trevor Lewis shorthanded goal, his third of the year, set up by Mikael Backlund and Noah Hanifin. This stood for a 3-2 win, with the three stars going to Ruzicka, Lindholm, and Pionk, while Andersson and Morrissey get the honorable mentions.

Down in Vegas, the Golden Knights welcome the St. Louis Blues. Jordan Binnington and Adin Hill man the nets. St. Louis began in the first period with a Brandon Saad goal, his second of the season, via Calle Rosen and Ryan O'Reilly. Vegas tied it on a Reilly Smith shorthanded goal, his eighth of the year, set up by Chandler Stephenson. The Golden Knights took the lead in the second period with a Phil Kessel goal, his third of the season, coming off of William Karlsson and Paul Cotter. The Blues tied it again with an Ivan Barbashev goal, his second of the year, passed from Brayden Schenn. St. Louis pulled ahead with an O'Reilly goal, his third of the season, assisted by Josh Leivo and Niko Mikkola. The final held at 3-2, with the three stars going to O'Reilly, Barbashev, and Saad.

In California, the Anaheim Ducks bring in the Chicago Blackhawks. Arvid Soderblom and Anthony Stolarz receive the starts in goal. Anaheim opened in the first period with a Troy Terry goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of Trevor Zegras. The Ducks added on with an Adam Henrique goal, his fifth of the year, via Terry and Simon Benoit. Chicago got on the board with a Jarred Tinordi goal, passed from Max Domi and Patrick Kane. The Blackhawks tied it on a Filip Roos goal in the second period, courtesy of Kane and Domi. Chicago gained the lead in the third period with a Tinordi goal, his second of the game, going in unassisted. The three stars of the 3-2 game were Tinordi, Domi, and Kane, while Terry gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings host the Detroit Red Wings. Alex Nedeljkovic and Cal Petersen are set to start in goal. Los Angeles started in the first period with a Carl Grundstrom goal, his fourth of the season, via Rasmus Kupari and Alexander Edler. Detroit tied it on a Dominik Kubalik power play goal, his seventh of the year, powered by Filip Hronek and David Perron. The Kings retook the lead with a Kevin Fiala power play goal, his fifth of the season, with assists provided by Drew Doughty and Adrian Kempe. Los Angeles added on in the second period with a Sean Durzi goal, his second of the year, coming off of Phillip Danault and Arthur Kaliyev. The Kings extended the lead as Durzi scored his second of the game and third of the season on the power play, thanks to Kaliyev and Danault. The Red Wings got one back with a Dylan Larkin power play goal in the third period, his seventh of the year, with helpers from Oskar Sundqvist and Lucas Raymond. Detroit got closer with a Hronek goal, passed from Kubalik and Perron. This only made it 4-3, the final, with the three stars handed to Durzi, Kubalik, and Hronek, while Danault and Kaliyev get the honorable mentions.

Four games on for a Friday night. First up...

The Toronto Maple Leafs host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Casey DeSmith and Erik Kallgren are the backups in goal. Toronto led off in the first period with a Zach Aston-Reese goal, his second of the season, via Denis Malgin and David Kampf. Pittsburgh tied it on an Evgeni Malkin goal, his sixth of the year, coming off of Chad Ruhwedel. The Penguins took the lead in the second period with a Jason Zucker goal, his fourth of the season, passed from Malkin and Marcus Pettersson. The Maple Leafs tied it on a William Nylander power play goal, his sixth of the year, powered by Morgan Rielly and Mitchell Marner. Pittsburgh reclaimed the lead in the third period with a Brock McGinn goal, his third of the season, made possible by Danton Heinen. The Penguins iced it at 4-2 with a Jake Guentzel empty net goal, his eighth of the year, set up by Sidney Crosby. The three stars were Malkin, McGinn, and DeSmith (28 for 30 in saves). 

In DC, the Washington Capitals welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Darcy Kuemper tend the twines. Washington began in the first period with an Anthony Mantha goal, his fifth of the season, guided in by Lars Eller. The Capitals added on in the second period with a Sonny Milano goal, coming off of John Carlson. Washington extended the lead as Aliaksei Protas scored his third of the year, thanks to Nick Jensen and Martin Fehervary. The Capitals padded the lead in the third period with a Conor Sheary goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Mantha and Milano. Tampa Bay got on the board with a Nick Perbix goal, his second of the year, courtesy of Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Ian Cole. Washington finished it at 5-1 with a Milano goal, his second of the game, helped along by Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alex Ovechkin. The three stars were Milano, Mantha, and Kuemper (28 for 29 in saves). 

Down in Dallas, the Stars bring in the San Jose Sharks. James Reimer and Jake Oettinger are the masked men. Dallas opened in the first period with a Jamie Benn goal, his fifth of the season, going in unassisted. San Jose tied it on an Alexander Barabanov power play goal, powered by Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture. The Sharks took the lead with an Evgeny Svechnikov goal, his third of the year, passed from Oskar Lindblom and Steven Lorentz. The Stars retied it on a Benn goal, his second of the game and sixth of the season, via Ty Dellandrea. San Jose retook the lead in the second period with a Timo Meier goal, his seventh of the year, helped along by Kevin Labanc. The Sharks added on with a Couture goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of Barabanov. San Jose extended the lead in the third period as Hertl scored his fourth of the year, thanks to Meier and Jaycob Megna. Dallas got one back on a Roope Hintz goal, his sixth of the season, made possible by Jason Robertson and Joe Pavelski. The Stars got closer with a Pavelski goal, his seventh of the year, fueled by Robertson and Miro Heiskanen. The final held at 5-4, with the three stars going to Benn, Hertl, and Meier, while Couture, Barabanov, Pavelski, and Robertson get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Seattle Kraken host the Minnesota Wild. Marc-Andre Fleury and Martin Jones are in the creases. Minnesota started in the first period with a Mats Zuccarello goal, his sixth of the season, fueled by Jon Merrill and Kirill Kaprizov. This was it for the scoring in the 1-0 Wild win. The Boston Bruins hosting the Calgary Flames. Dan Vladar and Linus Ullmark are in goal. Calgary led off in the first period with a Noah Hanifin goal, assisted by Andrew Mangiapane and Mikael Backlund. Boston tied it on a Connor Clifton goal, courtesy of Tomas Nosek and David Pastrnak. The Bruins took the lead in the second period with a Charlie McAvoy goal, guided in by Pavel Zacha and Hampus Lindholm. Boston iced it at 3-1 in the third period with a Pastrnak empty net goal, his ninth of the campaign, set up by Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. The three stars went to McAvoy, Ullmark (31 for 32 in saves), and Pastrnak.

Over in Buffalo, the Sabres welcome the Vegas Golden Knights. Logan Thompson and Eric Comrie protect the nets. Down in New Jersey, the Devils bring in the Ottawa Senators. Anton Forsberg and Vitek Vanecek are in the creases. Ottawa tied it on a Shane Pinto power play goal, his seventh of the year, powered by Claude Giroux and Jake Sanderson. The Senators took the lead on a Travis Hamonic goal, his second of the season, fueled by Mark Kastelic and Austin Watson. The Devils tied it on a Nico Hischier goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by John Marino and Ryan Graves. New Jersey took the lead in the second period on a Miles Wood goal, his sixth of the year, coming off of Michael McLeod and Nathan Bastian.
