NHL 2022-23 - Day 98

There's 13 games on for a packed Thursday schedule, beginning with...

The Toronto Maple Leafs hosting the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Ilya Samsonov man the nets. Toronto got going in the second period with an Auston Matthews goal, his twenty-third of the season, assisted by Michael Bunting and Morgan Rielly. The Maple Leafs added on with another Matthews goal, his second of the game and twenty-fourth of the year, guided in by Bunting and William Nylander. Toronto extended the lead on a Mitch Marner shorthanded goal, his seventeenth of the season, going in unassisted. Winnipeg got on the board with a Kyle Connor power play goal, his twenty-third of the year, powered by Josh Morrissey and Mark Scheifele. Toronto replied with a Mark Giordano empty net goal, his second of the campaign, set up by Pierre Engvall and Alexander Kerfoot. Over in Montreal, the Canadiens welcome the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and Sam Montembeault draw the starts in goal, but Alex Lyon relieved an injured Bobrovsky early in the first period. Florida dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Sam Reinhart power play goal, his fourteenth of the season, powered by Aleksander Barkov. Chicago tied it in the second period with a Jonathan Toews goal, his thirteenth of the year, assisted by Seth Jones and Jake McCabe. The Blackhawks took the lead with a Reese Johnson goal, his third of the season, via Colin Blackwell. NHL 2022-23 - Day 95

Another busy day with 11 games on, beginning with...

The Boston Bruins hosting the Philadelphia Flyers. Carter Hart and Jeremy Swayman protect the nets. Boston opened in the first period with a David Pastrnak goal, his thirty-fourth of the season, assisted by Pavel Zacha and David Krejci. The Bruins added on with a Zacha goal, his sixth of the year, via Krejci and Hampus Lindholm. Boston extended the lead in the second period as Brad Marchand scored his fourteenth of the season, thanks to Matt Grzelcyk and Patrice Bergeron. The Bruins padded the lead on a Zacha goal, his second of the game and seventh of the year, made possible by Krejci. Samuel Ersson replaced Hart in goal. Boston continued in the third period with a Pastrnak power play goal, his second of the game and thirty-fifth of the season, powered by Marchand and Charlie McAvoy. The Bruins kept going with a Grzelcyk goal, his third of the year, with helpers from McAvoy and Pastrnak. Buffalo got on the board with an Alex Tuch goal, his twenty-first of the year, going in unassisted. The Panthers iced it at 4-1 with a Verhaeghe empty net goal, his twentieth of the campaign, set up by Tkachuk and Gustav Forsling. The Lightning added on with a Nick Paul goal in the third period, his sixteenth of the year, going in unassisted. Seattle got on the board with a Vince Dunn goal, his eighth of the season, via Adam Larsson. Tampa Bay replied with a Brandon Hagel empty net goal, his seventeenth of the year, set up by Alex Killorn and Erik Cernak. The Lightning iced it at 4-1 with a Victor Hedman empty net goal, his second of the campaign, with helpers from Hagel and Steven Stamkos. The three stars were Hagel, Vasilevskiy (22 for 23 in saves), and Paul.

South to San Jose, where the Sharks welcome the New Jersey Devils. Vitek Vanecek and James Reimer are in the creases. New Jersey began in the first period with a Ryan Graves goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Nico Hischier and Yegor Sharangovich. San Jose tied it on a Timo Meier goal, his twenty-fifth of the year, courtesy of Mikey Eyssimont and Erik Karlsson. The Sharks took the lead with a Karlsson power play goal, his fourteenth of the season, powered by Meier and Tomas Hertl. The Devils tied it in the third period with a Hischier goal, his twentieth of the year, guided in by Ondrej Palat and Jesper Bratt. San Jose regained the lead on a Nick Bonino goal, his sixth of the season, helped along by Eyssimont and Matt Benning. New Jersey tied it on a Jack Hughes goal, his twenty-ninth of the year, coming off of Dougie Hamilton and Bratt. The Devils won 4-3 with Tomas Tatar netting the lone tally in the shootout. Back east, the Vegas Golden Knights bring in the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger and Logan Thompson guard the cages. The Stars added on in the second period with a Joel Kiviranta goal, his sixth of the year, courtesy of Fredrik Olofsson and Miro Heiskanen. Dallas extended the lead in the third period as Ryan Suter scored, thanks to Nils Lundkvist and Dellandrea. The Stars iced it at 4-0 with a Tyler Seguin empty net goal, his twelfth of the campaign, set up by Joe Pavelski. The three stars were Oettinger (27 save shutout), Dellandrea, and Benn.

Further east, the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Casey DeSmith are set to start in goal. The Rangers added on with a Barclay Goodrow power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by K'Andre Miller and Kakko. New York extended the lead in the second period as Vitali Kravtsov scored his third of the season, thanks to Filip Chytil and Goodrow. Columbus got on the board in the third period with an Andrew Peeke goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Gustav Nyquist and Jack Roslovic. The final held at 3-1, with the three stars being Goodrow, Kakko, and Halak (24 for 25 in saves).

Next up, the New York Islanders bring in the Washington Capitals. Darcy Kuemper and Ilya Sorokin tend the twines. New York led off in the first period with a Sebastian Aho goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Josh Bailey and Noah Dobson. The Islanders added on with a Matt Martin goal, his fourth of the year, via Cal Clutterbuck and Alexander Romanov. Washington got on the board with a Garnet Hathaway goal, his seventh of the year, passed from Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson. The Capitals got closer with a Tom Wilson goal, guided in by Nicklas Backstrom and Dmitry Orlov. Washington tied it in the third period as T.J. Oshie scored his ninth of the season, with the help of Erik Gustafsson and Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Capitals won 4-3 in overtime with an Orlov goal, his third of the year, helped along by Oshie and Sonny Milano. The three stars were Orlov, Oshie, and Wilson.

West again to St. Louis, where the Blues host the Ottawa Senators. Cam Talbot and Jordan Binnington are the veterans in goal. St. Louis began in the first period with a Jake Neighbours goal, his third of the season, via Calle Rosen and Josh Leivo. The Blues added on with a Noel Acciari goal, his tenth of the year, going in unassisted. Ottawa got on the board in the second period with a Tim Stutzle goal, his nineteenth of the campaign, assisted by Brady Tkachuk and Drake Batherson. This only made it 2-1, the eventual final, with the three stars going to Binnington (32 for 33 in saves), Acciari, and Neighbours. 

Finally, the Nashville Predators host the Calgary Flames. Jacob Markstrom and Juuse Saros are between the pipes. Nashville struck first in the first period with a Roman Josi goal, his twelfth of the season, via Ryan McDonagh and Matt Duchene. The Predators added on with a Juuso Parssinen goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Tanner Jeannot and Colton Sissons. Calgary got on the board in the second period with a Nikita Zadorov goal, his seventh of the campaign, guided in by Mikael Backlund and Andrew Mangiapane. The final held from here at 2-1, with the three stars being Saros (38 for 39 in saves), Parssinen, and Josi.

NHL 2022-23 - Day 94

There's just three games on today, beginning with...

The Carolina Hurricanes hosting the Vancouver Canucks. Collin Delia and Pyotr Kochetkov are the young goalies. Carolina began in the first period with a Paul Stastny goal, his third of the season, assisted by Andrei Svechnikov and Calvin de Haan. The Hurricanes added on with a Jordan Martinook goal, his tenth of the year, made possible by Jaccob Slavin. Vancouver got on the board with an Ethan Bear goal, his third of the season, fueled by Andrei Kuzmenko and Jack Studnicka in the second period. The Canucks tied it in the third period with a J.T. Miller goal, his seventeenth of the year, via Quinn Hughes. Carolina retook the lead with a Sebastian Aho goal, his fourteenth of the season, coming off of Teuvo Teravainen and Slavin. Vancouver retied it with a Brock Boeser goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Bo Horvat and Kuzmenko. The tie went to a shootout, where Kuzmenko and Elias Pettersson lifted the Canucks to a 4-3 win over Svechnikov and the Hurricanes. The three stars were Kuzmenko, Slavin, and Svechnikov. 

Up in New York, the Rangers welcome the Montreal Canadiens. Sam Montembeault is mismatched with Igor Shesterkin in goal. Montreal got going in the second period with a Kirby Dach power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Christian Dvorak and Cole Caufield. New York tied it on an Artemi Panarin goal, his twelfth of the year, assisted by Filip Chytil and K'Andre Miller. The Canadiens took the lead back in the third period with a Caufield goal, his twenty-sixth of the campaign, passed from Nick Suzuki and Joel Armia. This stood for a 2-1 win, with the three stars going to Caufield, Montembeault (38 for 39 in saves), and Dach. 

Finally, the Winnipeg Jets bring in the Arizona Coyotes. Karel Vejmelka and Connor Hellebuyck protect the nets. Dallas got on the board with a Jamie Benn shorthanded goal, his sixteenth of the season, set up by Ty Dellandrea. Calgary replied in the second period with an Elias Lindholm power play goal, his fourteenth of the year, with assists provided by Tyler Toffoli and Rasmus Andersson. The Flames extended the lead as Nazem Kadri scored his seventeenth of the season, thanks to Jonathan Huberdeau and Michael Stone. Nashville tied it on a Roman Josi power play goal, his eleventh of the year, powered by Ryan Johansen and Juuso Parssinen. The Sabres took the lead back in the second period with a Dylan Cozens goal, his fourteenth of the season, assisted by JJ Peterka and Jack Quinn. Buffalo added on with a Victor Olofsson power play goal, his seventeenth of the year, with assists provided by Owen Power and Casey Mittelstadt. The Predators pulled one back on a Jeremy Lauzon goal, his third of the season, made possible by Cody Glass and Colton Sissons. Nashville tied it on a Johansen goal, his tenth of the year, via Dante Fabbro and Mattias Ekholm. The Sabres took the lead with a Kyle Okposo shorthanded goal, his seventh of the season, set up by Ilya Lyubushkin and Mattias Samuelsson. Buffalo extended the lead as Quinn scored his seventh of the year, going in unassisted. The final was 5-3, with the three stars being Quinn, Johansen, and Okposo.

North to Minnesota, as the Wild bring in the Arizona Coyotes. Connor Ingram and Marc-Andre Fleury have the green light to start in goal. Minnesota got going in the second period with a Mats Zuccarello power play goal, his eighteenth of the season, powered by Calen Addison and Kirill Kaprizov. The Wild added on with a Frederick Gaudreau goal, his eleventh of the year, via Ryan Hartman and Sam Steel. Arizona got on the board with a Lawson Crouse goal, his sixteenth of the season, assisted by Jack McBain and Jakob Chychrun. The final stood at 2-1, with the three stars being Fleury (27 for 28 in saves), Gaudreau, and Zuccarello.

Westward to Vegas, as the Golden Knights host the Edmonton Oilers. Jack Campbell and Logan Thompson are the masked men. Edmonton opened in the first period with a Mattias Janmark goal, his fourth of the season, made possible by Tyson Barrie and Brett Kulak. The Oilers added on with a Leon Draisaitl goal, his twenty-fifth of the year, assisted by Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman. Vegas got on the board with a Keegan Kolesar goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of William Carrier and Brayden McNabb. Edmonton shot back with a Draisaitl goal in the second period, his second of the game and twenty-sixth of the year, via Hyman. The Golden Knights got one back on a Paul Cotter goal, his sixth of the season, courtesy of Byron Froese and Phil Kessel. The Oilers answered with a Klim Kostin goal, his ninth of the year, helped along by Janmark. Vegas shot back with a William Karlsson goal, his ninth of the season, with helpers from Jonathan Marchessault and Alec Martinez. The final stayed at 4-3, with the three stars given to Draisaitl, Janmark, and Hyman.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings host the New Jersey Devils. Mackenzie Blackwood and Jonathan Quick play in goal. Los Angeles struck first in the first period with a Kevin Fiala power play goal, his sixteenth of the season, powered by Adrian Kempe and Drew Doughty. New Jersey tied it on a Tomas Tatar power play goal, his tenth of the year, with assists provided by Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes. The Devils took the lead in the second period with an Erik Haula goal, his third of the season, made possible by Dawson Mercer. The Kings tied it again with an Anze Kopitar power play goal, his twelfth of the year, helped along by Doughty and Gabriel Vilardi. New Jersey regained the lead on a Nikita Okhotiuk goal, via Ondrej Palat and Hughes. The Devils added on with a Ryan Graves goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Yegor Sharangovich. New Jersey iced it at 5-2 with a Jesper Bratt empty net goal, his eighteenth of the year, set up by Sharangovich and Graves. The three stars were Graves, Hughes, and Sharangovich, while Doughty gets an honorable mention.

NHL 2022-23 - Day 92

A quieter day with three games on today, beginning with...

The Pittsburgh Penguins hosting the Winnipeg Jets. David Rittich and Dustin Tokarski are the backups in goal. Winnipeg started in the first period with a Blake Wheeler power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Cole Perfetti. Pittsburgh tied it on a Drew O'Connor goal, his second of the year, coming off of Kasperi Kapanen. The Jets took the lead back in the second period with a Mark Scheifele goal, his twenty-fifth of the season, via Wheeler and Perfetti. Winnipeg added on with a Nikolaj Ehlers goal, his third of the year, courtesy of Kyle Connor and Dylan DeMelo. The Jets extended the lead in the third period as Scheifele scored his second of the game and twenty-sixth of the campaign, thanks to DeMelo and Perfetti. This made it 4-1, the final, with the three stars going to Scheifele, Perfetti, and Wheeler, while DeMelo gets an honorable mention. 

Out west, the Anaheim Ducks welcome the New Jersey Devils. Vitek Vanecek and John Gibson start in goal. New Jersey opened in the first period with a Dougie Hamilton goal, his tenth of the season, courtesy of Dawson Mercer and Michael McLeod. The Devils added on with a Jesper Bratt goal, his sixteenth of the year, coming off of Ryan Graves and Damon Severson. New Jersey extended the lead as Jack Hughes scored his twenty-seventh of the season on the power play, powered by Hamilton and Tomas Tatar. The Devils padded the lead in the second period on a Bratt goal, his second of the game and seventeenth of the year, passed from Hughes and Severson. Anaheim got on the board with an Adam Henrique goal, his thirteenth of the season, helped along by Troy Terry. New Jersey replied in the third period with a Jesper Boqvist goal, his fifth of the year, made possible by Severson. The Ducks answered with a Trevor Zegras power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, with assists provided by Henrique and Cam Fowler. The Devils countered with a Hughes goal, his second of the game and twenty-eighth of the year, guided in by Yegor Sharangovich. The final held at 6-2, with the three stars given to Hughes, Bratt, and Severson, while Hamilton, Boqvist, and Henrique get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks bring in the Edmonton Oilers. Jack Campbell and Kaapo Kahkonen man the nets. Edmonton kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Connor McDavid power play goal, his thirty-sixth of the season, powered by Leon Draisaitl and Tyson Barrie. The Oilers added on with a Klim Kostin goal, his eighth of the year, passed from Zach Hyman and Vincent Desharnais. Edmonton extended the lead in the second period as McDavid scored his second of the game and thirty-seventh of the season, thanks to Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The Oilers padded the lead on a Nugent-Hopkins shorthanded goal, his twenty-first of the year, set up by Mattias Janmark. Edmonton continued with a Draisaitl goal, his twenty-fourth of the season, coming off of McDavid. The Oilers kept going in the third period with a Jesse Puljujarvi goal, his fourth of the year, helped along by Nugent-Hopkins. Edmonton struck again with a Ryan McLeod goal, his fifth of the season, courtesy of Warren Foegele. San Jose got on the board with an Oskar Lindblom goal, his fourth of the year, via Matt Benning and Jonah Gadjovich. The final held at 7-1, with the three stars being McDavid, Draisaitl, and Nugent-Hopkins.
