NHL Day 40 2013-2014

Ten games on throughout the day, including two matinees, beginning in...

Philadelphia, as the Flyers host the Edmonton Oilers. Devan Dubnyk and Steve Mason are the weak goalies. Philadelphia began in the first period with a Jay Rosehill goal, via Mark Streit and Nicklas Grossmann. The Flyers added on as Scott Hartnell scored his second of the season, coming off of Streit and Braydon Coburn. Edmonton got on the board in the second period with a David Perron goal, his third of the year coming on the power play with the help of Ales Hemsky. Philadelphia answered in the third period as Claude Giroux scored, thanks to Jakub Voracek. The Oilers pulled back on a Taylor Hall goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Sam Gagner and Philip Larsen. The Flyers wrapped it up at 4-2 on a Vincent Lecavalier goal, his sixth of the year, passed from Brayden Schenn and Matt Read. The three stars were Giroux, Streit, and Hall.

North to Ottawa, where the Senators welcome the Florida Panthers. Tim Thomas and Robin Lehner play in the blue paint. Ottawa was first to score in the first period on a Kyle Turris goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Bobby Ryan. The Senators added on with an unassisted goal by Mika Zibanejad, his fourth of the year. Florida got on the board as Nick Bjugstad scored his second of the season, with a lone assist by Tomas Kopecky. The Senators replied in the second period with a power play goal by Clarke MacArthur, his third of the year, powered by Erik Karlsson and Turris. The Panthers got one back in the third period on a Marcel Goc goal, his fifth of the campaign, guided in by Matt Gilroy. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars going to Turris, MacArthur, and Zibanejad.

Back stateside and at a regular time, the Boston Bruins host the Toronto Maple Leafs. James Reimer and Tuukka Rask are the masked men. Boston dented the scoreboard in the first period on a Zdeno Chara power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Jarome Iginla and Torey Krug. Toronto tied it on a second period Joffrey Lupul goal, his eighth of the year, with a lone helper by Paul Ranger. The Bruins took the lead as Patrice Bergeron scored a power play goal, his fourth of the season, helped along by Carl Soderberg and Reilly Smith. Boston iced it at 3-1 with a Bergeron empty net goal, his second of the game and fifth of the year, set up by Loui Eriksson and Brad Marchand. Bergeron, Rask (33 for 34 in saves), and Reimer (31 for 33 in saves).

West to Detroit, as the Red Wings bring in the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ben Bishop is mismatched with Jimmy Howard in goal. Detroit led off in the first period on a Henrik Zetterberg goal, his ninth of the season, going in unassisted. Tampa Bay tied it with a Ryan Malone goal, his second of the year, passed from Matthew Carle and Nate Thompson. The Lightning took the lead in the second period on a Steven Stamkos goal, his fourteenth of the season, helped along by Victor Hedman. The Red Wings retied it in the third period as Zetterberg scored his second of the game and tenth of the year, with a lone helper from by Danny DeKeyser. Tampa Bay won 3-2 in overtime with a Teddy Purcell goal, his fifth of the campaign, with a lone assist by Richard Panik. The three stars went to Purcell, Zetterberg, and Stamkos.

Southeast to Raleigh, as the Carolina Hurricanes host the Minnesota Wild. Josh Harding and Justin Peters will be between the pipes. Minnesota opened in the first period with a Jason Pominville goal, his eleventh of the season, with a lone assist by Ryan Suter. Carolina tied it on a Ryan Murphy goal, his second of the year, coming off of Drayson Bowman and the goalie Peters. The Hurricanes took the lead when Jiri Tlusty scored his third of the season in the second period, thanks to Alexander Semin and Brett Bellemore. The Wild retied it with a Justin Fontaine goal, his sixth of the year, helped along by Marco Scandella and Jared Spurgeon. Minnesota won 3-2 in the shootout when Zach Parise, Mikko Koivu, and Pominville all scored to top a lone tally by Carolina's Chris Terry. Pominville, Peters (28 for 30 in saves), and Harding (27 for 29 in saves) get the three stars.

Backtracking to Columbus, where the Blue Jackets host the New York Islanders. Evgeni Nabokov and Sergei Bobrovsky are the Russian goalies. Columbus started in the first period with a Brandon Dubinsky goal, his fourth of the season, a power play goal powered by Mark Letestu and Fedor Tyutin. New York tied it as Frans Nielsen potted his ninth of the year, assisted by Eric Boulton and Andrew MacDonald. The Blue Jackets took the lead back on a Ryan Johansen goal, his fifth of the season, courtesy of Dubinsky. The Islanders evened the score on a Thomas Hickey goal, fueled by John Tavares and Matt Donovan. Columbus gained the lead in the third period as R.J. Umberger scored his third of the year, a power play goal, guided in by James Wisniewski and Johansen. The Blue Jackets added on with a Cam Atkinson goal, his fourth of the season, set up by Johansen and Dubinsky. Columbus iced it at 5-2 with a Wisniewski empty net goal, his second of the year, with a lone assist by the goalie Bobrovsky. Dubinsky, Johansen, and Wisniewski were named the three stars.

Down in Dallas, the Stars welcome the Chicago Blackhawks. Corey Crawford and Kari Lehtonen guard the cages. Dallas struck first in the first period on a Cody Eakin goal, his fifth of the season, via Shawn Horcoff and Trevor Daley. Chicago tied it on a Marian Hossa goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp. The Stars retook the lead with a Tyler Seguin goal, his seventh of the season, with a lone assist by Jamie Benn. The Blackhawks retied it on a Toews goal, his ninth of the year, passed from Patrick Kane and Sharp. Chicago gained the lead on a Kane power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Andrew Shaw and Sharp, the latter getting a sock trick. The Blackhawks added on in the third period as Hossa scored his second of the game and eighth of the year, guided in by Sharp and Johnny Oduya. Chicago won 5-2 after Niklas Hjalmarsson scored his second of the campaign, a shorthanded empty net goal set up by Oduya. The three stars were Hossa, Sharp, and Toews, while Kane and Oduya get the honorable mentions.

Northward to St. Louis, as the Blues host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury and Jaroslav Halak protect the nets. St. Louis got going in the second period with a Ryan Reaves goal, his second of the season, assisted by Maxim Lapierre and Alexander Steen. Pittsburgh tied it as Jussi Jokinen scored his eighth of the year, a power play goal, powered by Evgeni Malkin and James Neal. The Blues took the lead in the third period as Kevin Shattenkirk scored, thanks to Barret Jackman and Jaden Schwartz. This was good for a 2-1 win, with the three stars going to Shattenkirk, Halak (19 for 20 in saves), and Reaves.

Southwest to Phoenix, where the Coyotes bring in the Washington Capitals. Michal Neuvirth and Mike Smith have the green light to start. Pheonix opened in the first period with a Shane Doan goal, his seventh of the season, coming on the power play with assists from Martin Hanzal and Keith Yandle. Washington tied it in the second period on a Troy Brouwer power play goal, his fifth of the year, via Mike Green and goalie Neuvirth. The Capitals took the lead as John Carlson scored his third of the season, a power play goal powered by Marcus Johansson and Alex Ovechkin. Washington added on as Joel Ward scored his seventh of the year, coming off of Michael Latta and Jason Chimera. The Coyotes got one back in the third period when Lauri Korpikoski scored his second of the season, guided in by Antoine Vermette and David Schlemko. Phoenix tied it with Doan's second of the game and eighth of the year, assisted by Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Yandle on the power play. The tie lasted to a shootout, where goals by Mikkel Boedker and Vermette gave the Coyotes a 4-3 win. The three stars were Doan, Vermette, and Yandle.

Finally, in Los Angeles, the Kings host the Vancouver Canucks. Roberto Luongo and Jonathan Quick tend the twines. Los Angeles led off in the first period with Jordan Nolan's third of the season, courtesy of Linden Vey and Alec Martinez. The Kings added on with a Tyler Toffoli goal, coming off of Drew Doughty and Mike Richards. Vancouver got on the board in the second period on a Dan Hamhuis goal, his fourth of the year, assisted by Kevin Bieksa and Ryan Kesler. Los Angeles replied as Richards scored fifth of the season, thanks to Dwight King and Toffoli. The Kings extended the lead as Justin Williams notched his sixth of the year, with the help of Anze Kopitar and Slava Voynov. Eddie Lack replaced Luongo at this time. Los Angeles padded the lead as Toffoli scored his second of the game, via Richards and King. This made it 5-1, the eventual final, with Toffoli, Richards, and King getting the three stars.

NHL Day 39 2013-2014

Four games to go with tonight, beginning in...

Toronto, as the Maple Leafs host the New Jersey Devils. Cory Schneider and Jonathan Bernier are the goalies who had to be traded to become starters. Toronto got going in the third period as Phil Kessel scored his tenth of the season, a power play goal powered by Cody Franson. New Jersey tied it with a Michael Ryder power play goal, his fifth of the year, via Eric Gelinas and Andy Greene. The tie lasted to a shootout, where James van Riemsdyk had the only goal to give the Maple Leafs a 2-1 win. The three stars were Bernier (34 for 35 in saves), Schneider (27 for 28 in saves), and Kessel.

West to Winnipeg, as the Jets welcome the Nashville Predators. Carter Hutton and Ondrej Pavelec get the starting nods. Winnipeg led off in the first period with a Bryan Little goal, his ninth of the season, fueled by Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler. The Jets added on as Olli Jokinen scored his third of the year, thanks to Evander Kane and Keaton Ellerby. Winnipeg extended the lead with an Eric Tangradi  goal, via Dustin Byfuglien and Grant Clitsome. Marek Mazanec relieved Hutton at this time. The Jets padded the lead as Devin Setoguchi scored his fourth of the season, with a lone helper by Jokinen. Winnipeg iced it in the third period on Little's second of the game and tenth of the year, passed from Ladd and Wheeler. The final was 5-0, with Little, Pavelec (41 save shutout), and Jokinen getting the three stars while Ladd and Wheeler get the honorable mentions.

Down in Colorado, the Avalanche bring in the Calgary Flames. Karri Ramo and Jean-Sebastien Giguere are in the blue paint. Colorado began in the first period with a Ryan O'Reilly goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of P.A. Parenteau and Jan Hejda. The Avalanche added on in the second period as Paul Stastny scored his sixth of the year, thanks to Erik Johnson and Andre Benoit on the power play. Calgary got on the board as Michael Cammalleri sank his sixth of the season, assisted by Mikael Backlund and Jiri Hudler. Colorado replied as John Mitchell scored his second of the year, with the help of Nathan MacKinnon and Cory Sarich. The Flames chipped back on another Cammalleri goal, his second of the game and seventh of the season, guided in by Hudler and Backlund. The Avalanche iced it at 4-2 in the third period with an empty net goal by Matt Duchene, his eleventh of the year, set up by O'Reilly. The three stars were handed to O'Reilly, Cammalleri, and Giguere (30 for 32 in saves), while Hudler and Backlund receive the honorable mentions.

Finally, out in Anaheim, the Ducks host the Buffalo Sabres. Ryan Miller and Frederik Andersen draw the starts. Anaheim was first to score in the first period as Ryan Getzlaf potted his eighth of the season, a power play goal powered by Cam Fowler and Dustin Penner. The Ducks added on as Fowler scored a power play goal, his second of the year, via Penner and Getzlaf. Buffalo got on the board as Mikhail Grigorenko scored, with the help of Cody McCormick and Drew Stafford. Anaheim answered on a Getzlaf goal, his second of the game and ninth of the season, going in unassisted. The Ducks extended the lead as Getzlaf finished his hat trick with his tenth of the year, made possible by Corey Perry and Penner, the latter getting a sock trick. Anaheim padded the lead in the second period on a Penner goal, his third of the season, with a lone assist by Perry. The Sabres got one back as Grigorenko scored his second of the game, with helpers provided by Corey Tropp and McCormick. The Ducks responded on an Andrew Cogliano goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Rickard Rakell and Daniel Winnik. This held up for a 6-2 win, with the three stars going to Getzlaf, Penner, and Grigorenko, while Perry, Fowler, and McCormick got the honorable mentions.

Thursday Night Football Week 10 2013

Our Thursday night game is in Minnesota, as the Vikings host the Washington Redskins. Washington led off in the first quarter on a Kai Forbath field goal of 20 yards. Minnesota took the lead when Adrian Peterson rushed 18 yards for a touchdown, and Blair Walsh made the extra point. The Redskins gained the lead with a Robert Griffin III touchdown pass of 8 yards to Pierre Garcon, and Forbath knocked in the extra point. The Vikings retook the lead as Christian Ponder tossed a 2 yard touchdown to Cordarrelle Patterson in the second quarter, and Walsh supplied the extra point. Washington edged ahead again with an 11 yard Griffin touchdown pass to Jordan Reed, and Forbath drilled the extra point. The Redskins added on as Griffin found Logan Paulsen for 1 yard and a touchdown, and Forbath handled another PAT. Washington extended the lead in the third quarter as Forbath made a 40 yard field goal. Minnesota pulled back as Ponder found John Carlson for 28 yards and a touchdown, and Walsh booted the extra point. The Vikings took the lead as Peterson ran 1 yard for a touchdown, and Walsh made another extra point. Minnesota padded the lead as Walsh nailed a 39 yard field goal. The Vikings wrapped it up at 34-27 as Walsh made a 40 yard field goal. The Vikings are now 2-7 while the Redskins are 3-6.

NHL Day 38 2013-2014

Eleven games on tonight, beginning in...

Boston, as the Bruins host the Florida Panthers. Scott Clemmensen and Tuukka Rask are set to start. Boston got going in the second period on a David Krejci goal, his third of the season, assisted by Zdeno Chara and Dougie Hamilton. The Bruins added on in the third period as Brad Marchand scored his second of the year, thanks to Loui Eriksson and Dennis Seidenberg. Boston extended the lead on the sixth of the season by Torey Krug, coming off of Chris Kelly and Reilly Smith. Florida got on the board with a Jesse Winchester goal, his fourth of the year, passed from Nick Bjugstad and Jonathan Huberdeau. The Bruins iced it at 4-1 with an unassisted goal by Smith, his second of the campaign. The three stars were Smith, Rask (23 for 24 in saves), and Marchand.

Down to Raleigh, where the Carolina Hurricanes welcome the New York Islanders. Kevin Poulin and Justin Peters are the relatively unknown goalies. Carolina was first to score as Radek Dvorak scored his third of the season, with a lone assist by Ron Hainsey. This was good for a 1-0 win, with the three stars being Peters (21 save shutout), Dvorak, and Poulin (23 for 24 in saves).

North again to Ottawa, where the Senators bring in the Montreal Canadiens. Carey Price and Robin Lehner are in the creases. Montreal opened in the first period on an Andrei Markov power play goal, his second of the season, powered by P.K. Subban and Tomas Plekanec. Ottawa tied it on a Bobby Ryan goal, his ninth of the year, with the help of Clarke MacArthur and Eric Gryba. The Senators took the lead in the second period with a Marc Methot goal, his second of the season, going in unassisted. Ottawa added on with a Matt Borowiecki goal, coming off of MacArthur and Ryan. The Senators made it 4-1 in the third period on a Kyle Turris empty net goal, his third of the year, set up by Ryan. The three stars belonged to Ryan, Lehner (33 for 34 in saves), and MacArthur.

Back in the States, the Philadelphia Flyers host the New Jersey Devils. Martin Brodeur faces a lesser foe in Ray Emery in goal. New Jersey began with an Adam Henrique goal, his fifth of the season, via Eric Gelinas and Michael Ryder. The Devils added on in the third period with a Cam Janssen goal, with assists provided by Adam Larsson and Ryan Carter. New Jersey iced it at 3-0 with a Jaromir Jagr empty net goal, his fourth of the year, going in unassisted. The three stars were Brodeur (22 save shutout), Henrique, and Janssen.

Over in DC, the Washington Capitals welcome the Minnesota Wild. Josh Harding and Braden Holtby receive the starting nods. The Wild took the lead in the second period as Mikael Granlund scored his second of the year, with the help of Jason Pominville and Nino Neiderreiter. The Capitals tied it in the third period as Johansson put away his second of the campaign, via Tom Wilson and Brooks Laich. The tie lasted to a shootout, where Backstrom had the only goal for a 3-2 Washington win. The three stars were Backstrom, Johansson, and Holtby (33 for 35 in saves).

To the west, the Columbus Blue Jackets bring in the New York Rangers. Cam Talbot is mismatched with Sergei Bobrovsky in goal. New York struck first in the first period on a Carl Hagelin goal, his third of the season, coming off of Ryan Callahan and Brad Richards. Columbus answered as Fedor Tyutin scored, with assists provided by Brandon Dubinsky and Jack Johnson. The Rangers retook the lead in the second period on a Callahan power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Mats Zuccarello and Ryan McDonagh. New York added on as Hagelin scored his second of the game and fifth of the season, going in unassisted. The Rangers wrapped it up at 4-2 with an unassisted McDonagh empty net goal, his fourth of the campaign, set up by Dan Girardi and Derek Stepan. Northwest to St. Louis, as the Blues bring in the Calgary Flames. Reto Berra and Brian Elliott are the reliable backups goalies starting. St. Louis started in the first period with a Vladimir Tarasenko goal, his fifth of the season, coming on the power play from Jay Bouwmeester and Jaden Schwartz. The Blues added on with a Maxim Lapierre goal, via Jordan Leopold and Kevin Shattenkirk. St. Louis extended the lead with an Alexander Steen goal, his fourteenth of the year, coming off of T.J. Oshie and Leopold. Calgary got on the board in the third period with a Tim Jackman goal, made possible by Shane O'Brien and Chad Billins. The Flames pulled closer as Michael Cammalleri scored his fifth of the campaign, with the help of Chris Butler and Jiri Hudler. They failed to tie the game, losing 3-2, with the three stars going to Leopold, Steen, and Elliott (18 for 20 in saves).

Way to the west, the Los Angeles Kings host the Buffalo Sabres. Jhonas Enroth and Jonathan Quick are between the pipes. Los Angeles was first to score in the first period on a Mike Richards power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Jake Muzzin and Tyler Toffoli. The Kings added on in the second period as Anze Kopitar sank his fourth of the year, a power play goal, via Drew Doughty and Richards. This held up as a 2-0 win, with Richards, Quick (19 save shutout), and Kopitar getting the three stars.

Finally, in San Jose, the Sharks host the Vancouver Canucks. Roberto Luongo and Antti Niemi guard the cages. San Jose struck first in the first period with a Joe Thornton goal, his second of the season, passed from Tomas Hertl and Tommy Wingels. Vancouver tied it on a Brad Richardson goal, his fifth of the year, via Darren Archibald and Kevin Bieksa. The Canucks took the lead as Mike Santorelli notched his fifth of the season, with the help of Chris Higgins and Alexandre Burrows. The Sharks tied it as Mike Brown scored, thanks to James Sheppard and Andrew Desjardins. Vancouver replied on a Higgins goal, his sixth of the year, coming off of Burrows. The Canucks chased Niemi in the second period on a Zack Kassian goal, his fourth of the season, with assists provided by Bieksa and Ryan Stanton. Alex Stalock replaced Niemi. The scoring was done, with the final being 4-2, with the three stars going to Higgins, Burrows, and Bieksa.

NHL Day 37 2013-2014

There are only four games on tonight, beginning in...

New York City, as the Rangers host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury and Henrik Lundqvist tend the twines. New York led off in the first period as Ryan McDonagh scored his third of the season, thanks to Brian Boyle. The Rangers added on in the second period as Derek Stepan notched his fourth of the year, via Mats Zuccarello and Chris Kreider. New York extended the lead in the second period as Boyle scored, with assists provided by Brad Richards and Anton Stralman. Pittsburgh got on the board as Kris Letang scored his third of the season, a power play goal, powered by Chris Kunitz and Evgeni Malkin. The Rangers shot back as Ryan Callahan scored his fourth of the year, coming off of Richards and Carl Hagelin. New York padded the lead in the third period on a Derick Brassard goal, his third of the season, set up by Derek Dorsett. This was good for a 5-1 win, with the three stars being Lundqvist (28 for 29 in saves), Boyle, and Richards.

To the west, the Chicago Blackhawks welcome the Winnipeg Jets. Al Montoya and Corey Crawford are the masked men. The Predators added on with a Wilson power play goal, his second of the season, guided in by Ellis and Roman Josi. Colorado got one back as Paul Stastny scored his fifth of the year, with the help of Jamie McGinn. The Avalanche tied it in the third period as Duchene potted his tenth of the season, via Cody McLeod and Cory Sarich. Nashville retook the lead as Wilson scored his second of the game and third of the year, thanks to Stalberg and David Legwand. The Predators iced it at 6-4 with an empty net goal by Gabriel Bourque, set up by Legwand. The three stars were given to Wilson, Duchene, and Stalberg, while Parenteau, Ellis, and Legwand get the honorable mentions.

Finally, in Anaheim, the Ducks bring in the Phoenix Coyotes. Mike Smith and Jonas Hiller draw the starts. Phoenix started in the first period on a Shane Doan goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Mike Ribeiro and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Anaheim tied it with a Hampus Lindholm goal, passed from Mathieu Perreault and Devante Smith-Pelly. The Coyotes took the lead back in the second period with a Michael Stone power play goal, his third of the year, via David Moss and Martin Hanzal. The Ducks tied it again on a power play goal by Ryan Getzlaf, his seventh of the season, powered by Cam Fowler and Nick Bonino. Anaheim took the lead with a Corey Perry goal, his tenth of the year, coming off of Lindholm and Getzlaf. The Ducks added on in the third period as Fowler scored, with a lone helper from Bonino on the power play. Anaheim wrapped it up at 5-2 on an Andrew Cogliano empty net goal, his third of the campaign, set up by Dustin Penner. The three stars were Getzlaf, Lindholm, and Bonino, while Fowler gets an honorable mention.

NHL Day 36 2013-2014

Nine games on tonight, beginning with...

The Boston Bruins hosting the Dallas Stars. Kari Lehtonen and Tuukka Rask get the starting nods. Dallas began in the first period with a Jamie Benn goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Valeri Nichushkin and Jordie Benn. Boston tied it as Torey Krug potted his fifth of the year, thanks to Reilly Smith and Carl Soderberg. The Bruins took the lead in the third period on a Milan Lucic goal, his seventh of the season, coming off of Dougie Hamilton and David Krejci. The Stars tied it as Vernon fiddler notched his second of the year on a penalty shot after being hooked on a breakaway by Dennis Seidenberg. The tie lasted to a shootout, where, with sweet irony, the Stars won as former Bruins Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley scored to top a Patrice Bergeron tally for a 3-2 win. The three stars were Lehtonen (34 for 36 in saves), Fiddler, and Rask (34 for 36 in saves).

Down in DC, the Washington Capitals welcome the New York Islanders. Evgeni Nabokov and Braden Holtby are set to start. New York struck first in the first period on a John Tavares goal, his seventh of the season, courtesy of Frans Nielsen and Kyle Okposo. Washington tied it on a John Carlson unassisted goal in the second period, his second of the year. The Capitals took the lead with an Alex Ovechkin goal, his eleventh of the season coming on the power play via Nicklas Backstrom. The Islanders pulled even as Okposo scored his fifth of the year, thanks to Tavares and Andrew MacDonald. Washington took the lead back as Marcus Johansson scored a power play goal, powered by Troy Brouwer and Backstrom. The Capitals added on with an Alexandr Urbom goal, fueled by Tom Wilson and Steve Oleksy. Washington extended the lead as Ovechkin scored another power play goal, his second of the game and twelfth of the campaign, passed from Johansson and Backstrom, the latter getting a sock trick. The Capitals wrapped it up at 6-2 with a Wilson power play goal in the third period, set up by Ovechkin and Mikhail Grabovski. Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Johansson get the three stars, while Wilson, Okposo, and Tavares get the honorable mentions.

To the west, the Columbus Blue Jackets bring in the Ottawa Senators. Robin Lehner and Curtis McElhinney are the backups making spot starts. Ottawa started in the first period with the fifth of the season by Erik Karlsson, going in unassisted. The Senators added on with a Clarke MacArthur goal, his second of the year, coming off of Bobby Ryan and Kyle Turris. Columbus got on the board in the third period as R.J. Umberger scored his second of the season, a power play goal powered by Fedor Tyutin and Brandon Dubinsky. Ottawa extended their lead with a Chris Neil goal, his second of the year, assisted by Jason Spezza and Eric Gryba. The Senators iced it at 4-1 as Karlsson scored his second of the game and sixth of the campaign, an empty net goal set up by Spezza and Milan Michalek. The three stars were Karlsson, Lehner (32 for 33 in saves), and Spezza.

Back east, the Carolina Hurricanes host the Philadelphia Flyers. Steve Mason and Justin Peters are the weak goalies. Philadelphia got going in the third period with a Scott Hartnell power play goal, powered by Kimmo Timonen and Claude Giroux. Carolina tied it with a Jordan Staal goal, his second of the season, made possible by Eric Staal and Jiri Tlusty. The Hurricanes won 2-1 in overtime with a Manny Malhotra goal, coming off of Ron Hainsey. The three stars were Malhotra, Peters (28 for 29 in saves), and Mason (36 for 38 in saves).

Up in Montreal, the Canadiens welcome the St. Louis Blues. Jaroslav Halak tends the twines against his former team, which trots out his replacement, Carey Price. St. Louis was first to score with a first period Alexander Steen goal, his thirteenth of the season, assisted by David Backes. Montreal tied it in the second period when Rene Bourque scored his fifth of the year, via Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban. The Canadiens took the lead on a Michael Bournival goal, his fourth of the season, made possible by Brian Gionta. The Blues tied it in the third period with a Chris Stewart goal, his second of the year, passed from Kevin Shattenkirk and Vladimir Sobotka. St. Louis won 3-2 in the shootout as T.J. Oshie had the only tally. The three stars were handed to Halak (25 for 27 in saves), Price (30 for 32 in saves), and Stewart.

Way to the south, the Florida Panthers bring in the Edmonton Oilers. Devan Dubnyk and Jacob Markstrom are the unproven goalies. Florida led off in the first period with a Marcel Goc goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Jonathan Huberdeau and Tomas Fleischmann. Edmonton tied it as Philip Larsen scored, thanks to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Boyd Gordon. The Oilers took the lead in the second period on a Mark Arcobello goal, fueled by Gordon and Ryan Jones. Edmonton added on with a Taylor Fedun goal, coming off of Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle. The Panthers got one back in the third period as Scottie Upshall scored, with the help of Jesse Winchester and Brian Campbell. Florida tied it on Upshall's second of the game, guided in by Goc and Dmitry Kulikov. The Oilers won 4-3 in overtime as Arcobello scored his second of the game on the power play, powered by Ales Hemsky and Gordon, the latter getting a sock trick. The three stars were Arcobello, Upshall, and Gordon, while Goc and Nugent-Hopkins get the honorable mentions.

Back north, the Minnesota Wild host the Calgary Flames. Reto Berra and Josh Harding play in the blue paint. Calgary opened in the first period as Jiri Hudler scored his sixth of the season, via Lance Bouma and Chad Billins. Minnesota tied it as Mikko Koivu scored his second of the year, thanks to Zach Parise and Charlie Coyle. The Wild took the lead in the second period on a Parise power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Ryan Suter and Koivu. Minnesota added on in the third period with a Justin Fontaine goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Matt Cooke and Kyle Brodziak. The Wild extended the lead on a Zenon Konopka goal, fueled by Torrey Mitchell and Marco Scandella. Minnesota wrapped it up at 5-1 with another Parise goal, his second of the game and eighth of the campaign, set up by Koivu and Suter. The three stars were awarded to Parise, Koivu, and Suter.

Zigzagging to the south, where the Phoenix Coyotes welcome the Vancouver Canucks. Roberto Luongo and Mike Smith tend the twines. Phoenix dented the scoreboard in the first period as Radim Vrbata netted his sixth of the season, with the help of Martin Hanzal. Vancouver tied it in the second period as Dan Hamhuis scored his third of the year, thanks to Mike Santorelli. The Canucks took the lead with a Ryan Kesler power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin. The Coyotes retied it on a Shane Doan goal, his fifth of the year, passed from Keith Yandle and David Moss. The tie lasted to a shootout, where Vrbata exchanged a goal with Alexandre Burrows before Phoenix could win 3-2 with an Antoine Vermette goal. The three stars were Smith (31 for 33 in saves), Vrbata, and Luongo (30 for 32 in saves).

Finally, the San Jose Sharks bring in the Buffalo Sabres. Ryan Miller and Antti Niemi protect the nets. San Jose began in the first period with a Martin Havlat goal, assisted by Brad Stuart and Dan Boyle. Buffalo tied it in the second period when Drew Stafford scored his second of the season, courtesy of Jamie McBain and Zemgus Girgensons. The Sabres took the lead as Cody McCormirck scored, with the help of Stafford and Girgensons. Buffalo extended the lead with a Tyler Ennis goal, his second of the year, a power play goal powered by Cody Hodgson and Matt Moulson. The Sharks got one back on Tyler Kennedy's second of the season, via Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Joe Pavelski. San Jose tied it on a Tomas Hertl goal, his ninth of the year, fueled by Scott Hannan and Joe Thornton. The Sabres retook the lead as Henrik Tallinder scored his second of the season, passed from Ennis and Hodgson. The Sharks pulled even again as Tommy Wingels sank his fourth of the year, with assists provided by Havlat and Hertl. The tie lasted to a shootout, where Logan Couture and Moulson exchanged goals and then Hodgson scored to give the Sabres a 5-4 win. The three stars were Hodgson, Ennis, and Moulson, while Havlat, Hertl, Stafford, and Girgensons get the honorable mentions.

Monday Night Football Week 9 2013

Tonight's Monday Night Game comes from Green Bay, where the Packers host their division rivals, the Chicago Bears. Green Bay opened in the first quarter on a Mason Crosby field goal of 30 yards. Chicago took the lead with a Josh McCown 23 yard touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall, and Robbie Gould supplied the extra point. The Packers retook the lead with a James Starks 32 yard touchdown run, and Crosby was there with the extra point. The Bears took the lead back in the second quarter as Matt Forte ran 1 yard for a touchdown, and Gould knocked in the PAT. Chicago added on with a Gould field goal of 24 yards. Green Bay pulled even in the third quarter as Eddie Lacy rushed 1 yard for a touchdown, and Crosby was true with the extra point. The Packers took the lead again on a 23 yard Crosby field goal. The Bears replied as McCown found Alshon Jeffery for 6 yards and a touchdown, and Gould booted the extra point. Chicago extended the lead in the fourth quarter on a Gould field goal from 27 yards away. This made it 27-20, the final, with both teams moving to 5-3 for the season.
