NHL 2016/17 - Day 22

Twelve more games fill tonight's schedule, beginning with...

The Buffalo Sabres hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen and Robin Lehner man the nets. Toronto opened in the first period with a Mitchell Marner goal, his second of the season, coming off of Tyler Bozak and James van Riemsdyk. The Maple Leafs added on with a Marner goal in the second period, his second of the game and third of the year, going in unassisted. Buffalo got on the board with a Marcus Foligno goal, his second of the season, helped along by Johan Larsson and Sam Reinhart. This only made it 2-1, the final, with the three stars going to Marner, Andersen (42 for 43 in saves), and Foligno.

Out in Brooklyn, the New York Islanders welcome the Philadelphia Flyers. Michal Neuvirth and Jaroslav Halak play in goal. Philadelphia got going in the second period with a Travis Konecny goal, his second of the season, made possible by Radko Gudas. New York tied it with a John Tavares power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Casey Cizikas and Thomas Hickey. The Islanders took the lead in the third period with a Dennis Seidenberg goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Josh Bailey and Calvin de Haan. The Flyers tied it again on a Matt Read power play goal, his sixth of the year, helped along by Nick Cousins and Mark Streit. The tie went to a shootout, where Claude Giroux's lone tally lifted the Flyers to a 3-2 win. The three stars went to Read, Konecny, and Giroux.

Across town in Manhattan, the New York Rangers bring in the Edmonton Oilers. Cam Talbot and Henrik Lundqvist draw the starts in goal. Edmonton started in the first period with a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins power play goal, powered by Connor McDavid and Jordan Eberle. New York tied it on a Kevin Hayes goal, his fourth of the season, passed from Michael Grabner and Brady Skjei. The Oilers retook the lead with a Patrick Maroon goal, his third of the year, with a lone helper from Jesse Puljujarvi. The Rangers tied it again with a Grabner goal, his sixth of the season, via J.T. Miller and Hayes. Edmonton regained the lead with an Adam Larsson goal, guided in by Andrej Sekera and Mark Letestu. New York tied it with a Jesper Fast goal, fueled by Brandon Pirri and Skjei. The Rangers pulled ahead as Rick Nash scored his sixth of the year, thanks to Nick Holden and Derek Stepan. New York iced it at 5-3 with a Miller empty net goal, his fourth of the campaign, set up by Holden and Hayes. The three stars belonged to Hayes, Grabner, and Miller, while Holden and Skjei get the honorable mentions.

Down in Washington, the Capitals host the Winnipeg Jets. Michael Hutchinson and Braden Holtby are the masked men. Washington led off in the first period with a Nicklas Backstrom goal, assisted by Alex Ovechkin and Justin Williams. The Capitals added on in the second period with a T.J. Oshie goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Andre Burakovsky. Washington extended the lead as Ovechkin scored his fifth of the year, thanks to John Carlson and Backstrom. Winnipeg got on the board in the third period with a shorthanded and unassisted Toby Enstrom goal. The Jets got closer with an Adam Lowry goal, his second of the season, made possible by Dustin Byfuglien. Winnipeg tied it on a Marko Dano goal, passed from Andrew Copp and Brandon Tanev. The Capitals won 4-3 in overtime with an Ovechkin power play goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year, powered by Carlson and Backstrom. The three stars were Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Carlson.

Up in Canada, the Ottawa Senators welcome the Vancouver Canucks. Jacob Markstrom and Mike Condon are the backups in goal. Ottawa dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Mike Hoffman goal, his second of the campaign, going in unassisted. The score held from here at 1-0, with the three stars awarded to Hoffman, Condon (27 save shutout), and Markstrom (23 for 24 in saves).

South to Tampa Bay, where the Lightning bring in the Boston Bruins. Tuukka Rask and Andrei Vasilevskiy are in the creases. Boston began in the first period with a Brandon Carlo goal, his second of the season, made possible by Patrice Bergeron. The Bruins added on with a Ryan Spooner power play goal, his second of the year, powered by Torey Krug and David Krejci. Tampa Bay got on the board with a Victor Hedman power play goal, his second of the season, with assists provided by Nikita Kucherov and Valtteri Filppula. Boston replied in the second period with a David Pastrnak goal, his sixth of the year, helped along by Bergeron and Brad Marchand. The Lightning got one back with a Tyler Johnson power play goal, his third of the season, coming off of Anton Stralman and Steven Stamkos. Tampa Bay tied it with another Johnson goal, his second of the game and fourth of the year, passed from Braydon Coburn and Slater Koekkoek in the third period. The tie went to a shootout, where Brayden Point of the Lightning and Riley Nash of the Bruins cancelled out before Jimmy Hayes lifted Boston to the 5-4 win. The three stars went to Johnson, Bergeron, and Hayes.

Staying in the state, the Florida Panthers host the New Jersey Devils. Corey Schneider and James Reimer receive the starting nods in goal. Florida struck first in the first period with an Aaron Ekblad power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Keith Yandle and Jonathan Marchessault. The Panthers added on in the second period with a Denis Malgin power play goal, his second of the year, via Jason Demers and Colton Sceviour. New Jersey got on the board with a Travis Zajac power play goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Kyle Palmieri and Damon Severson. Florida countered with a Vincent Trocheck goal, his fifth of the year, helped along by Jaromir Jagr and Mark Pysyk. The Devils replied on a P.A. Parenteau goal, his fourth of the season, guided in by John Moore and Nick Lappin. New Jersey tied it with a Pavel Zacha goal, passed from Beau Bennett and Severson. The Panthers won 4-3 in overtime with a Trocheck goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year, with a lone assist by Reilly Smith. The three stars were handed to Trocheck, Severson, and Zacha.

Northwest to Chicago, where the Blackhawks welcome the Colorado Avalanche. Semyon Varlamov and Corey Crawford guard the cages. Chicago was first to score in the first period with a Jonathan Toews goal, his second of the season, helped along by Duncan Keith. The Blackhawks added on with a Marian Hossa goal, his fourth of the year, passed from Artemi Panarin and Artem Anisimov. Chicago extended the lead in the third period as Hossa scored his second of the game and fifth of the season, with a lone assist by Keith. The Blackhawks iced it at 4-0 on a Panarin goal, his fifth of the year, made possible by Patrick Kane. The three stars went to Hossa, Crawford (38 save shutout), and Panarin, while Keith gets an honorable mention.

Down in Dallas, the Stars bring in the St. Louis Blues. Jake Allen and Antti Niemi are in the blue paint. Dallas cracked the scoresheet in the second period with a Patrick Eaves goal, his second of the season, helped along by Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. St. Louis tied it with a Paul Stastny goal, his fourth of the year, via Alex Pietrangelo and Alexander Steen. The Stars retook the lead on a John Klingberg goal, courtesy of Jamie Benn and Seguin. Dallas added on in the third period with a Stephen Johns goal, his second of the season, coming off of Seguin, who got a sock trick, and Johnny Oduya. The Stars extended the lead as Jason Spezza scored his fourth of the year on the power play, with the help of Seguin and Esa Lindell. The Blues got one back with a Pietrangelo goal, his second of the season, guided in by Stastny and Dmitrij Jaskin. Dallas replied with an empty net goal by Klingberg, his second of the game, set up by Jamie Benn, who got a sock trick. The Stars iced it at 6-2 with a Jordie Benn goal, passed from Dam Hamhuis and Lauri Korpikoski. The three stars were given to Seguin, Jamie Benn, and Klingberg, while Pietrangelo and Stastny receive the honorable mentions.

Over in Arizona, the Coyotes host the Nashville Predators. Pekka Rinne and Louis Domingue are the goalies. Arizona led off in the first period with a Christian Dvorak goal, passed from Ryan White and Alex Goligoski. Nashville tied it with a Matt Irwin goal, his second of the season, coming off of Yannick Weber and Mike Ribeiro. The Predators took the lead with a Craig Smith power play goal in the second period, his fifth of the year, powered by P.K. Subban and Mattias Ekholm. The Coyotes retied it with an Anthony Duclair goal in the third period, helped along by Max Domi. The tie went to a shootout, where Duclair and Radim Vrbata lifted the Coyotes to a 3-2 win. The three stars went to Duclair, Dvorak, and Vrbata.

Further west, the Los Angeles Kings welcome the Pittsburgh Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury and Peter Budaj have the green light in goal. Pittsburgh began in the first period with a Sidney Crosby goal, his fifth of the season, via Patric Hornqvist and Kris Letang. Los Angeles tied it in the second period with a Trevor Lewis goal, assisted by Kyle Clifford and Alec Martinez. The Kings took the lead in the third period on a Matt Greene goal, fueled by Jeff Carter. The Penguins retied it with another Crosby goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year, passed from Letang. Los Angeles won 3-2 in overtime with a Nic Dowd goal, his second of the campaign, with helpers from Tanner Pearson and Martinez. The three stars were given to Martinez, Crosby, and Letang.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks bring in the Calgary Flames. Chad Johnson and Martin Jones are between the pipes. Calgary drew first blood in the second period on a Troy Brouwer goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Micheal Ferland and Sam Bennett. The Flames added on with a Matthew Tkachuk goal, his second of the year, helped along by Deryk Engelland and Michael Frolik. San Jose got on the board in the third period with a Brent Burns power play goal, his fourth of the season, powered by Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton. The Sharks tied it on a Melker Karlsson goal, his second of the year, coming off of Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Chris Tierney. Calgary retook the lead with a Tkachuk goal, his second of the game and third of the campaign, with helpers from Frolik and Engelland. This stood for a 3-2 win, with the three stars being Tkachuk, Frolik and Engelland.
