NHL 2017-18 Day 66

Twelve games on for today, beginning with one matinee from...

Detroit, as the Red Wings host the St. Louis Blues. Jake Allen and Jimmy Howard are the veterans in goal. St. Louis led off in the first period with a Jaden Schwartz goal, his fourteenth of the season, passed from Alexander Steen and Brayden Schenn. The Blues added on with a Vladimir Sobotka goal, his sixth of the year, coming off of Vladimir Tarasenko and Paul Stastny in the second period. St. Louis extended the lead on an unassisted Scottie Upshall goal, his fifth of the season. The Blues padded the lead as Jay Bouwmeester scored, thanks to Alex Pietrangelo and Sammy Blais. Petr Mrazek replaced Howard for the third period. Detroit got on the board with a Frans Nielsen goal, his eighth of the year, courtesy of Luke Glendening and Jonathan Ericsson. St. Louis replied with a Dmitrij Jaskin goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Pietrangelo and Joel Edmundson. The Blues capped it at 6-1 with a Schenn goal, his fifteenth of the year, made possible by Bouwmeester and Steen. The three stars were Bouwmeester, Schenn, and Pietrangelo, while Steen gets an honorable mention.

Over in Boston, the Bruins welcome the New York Islanders. Jaroslav Halak and Tuukka Rask man the nets. Boston got going in the second period with a Brad Marchand power play goal, his eleventh of the season, powered by Torey Krug and David Pastrnak. The Bruins added on with a Jake DeBrusk goal, his sixth of the year, via Krug and Pastrnak. New York got on the board with an Anders Lee goal, his seventeenth of the season, helped along by Josh Bailey and Mathew Barzal. Boston iced it at 3-1 with a Danton Heinen empty net goal, his sixth of the year, set up by Patrice Bergeron. The three stars were Rask (30 for 31 in saves), Krug, and Pastrnak.

In Quebec, the Montreal Canadiens bring in the Edmonton Oilers. Laurent Brossoit and Carey Price draw the starts in goal. Edmonton began in the first period with a Michael Cammalleri goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Patrick Maroon. The Oilers added on with a Jujhar Khaira goal, his fourth of the year, with a lone assist by Ryan Strome. Edmonton extended the lead as Khaira scored his second of the game and fifth of the season, thanks to Strome and Kris Russell. The Oilers chased Price with a Milan Lucic power play goal, his sixth of the year, powered by Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid. Antti Niemi came on in relief. Montreal got on the board with an Alex Galchenyuk power play goal, his seventh of the season, with assists provided by Jeff Petry and Max Pacioretty. Edmonton answered in the third period with an Oscar Klefbom power play goal, his third of the year, guided in by Mark Letestu and Lucic. The Oilers padded the lead on a Yohann Auvitu goal, his second of the season, passed from McDavid and Jesse Puljujarvi. The Canadiens got one back with a Phillip Danault goal, his sixth of the year, fueled by Byron Froese and Daniel Carr. This only made it 6-2, the final, with the three stars given to Khaira, Strome, and Lucic, while McDavid gets an honorable mention.

Back stateside, the New York Rangers host the New Jersey Devils. Keith Kinkaid and Henrik Lundqvist man the nets. New York opened in the first period with a Jimmy Vesey goal, his sixth of the season, made possible by Paul Carey and Boo Nieves. The Rangers added on in the second period with a Jesper Fast goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Rick Nash. New Jersey got on the board with a Damon Severson goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Blake Coleman and Stefan Noesen. New York replied with an unassisted Mats Zuccarello goal, his sixth of the year. The Rangers extended the lead as Zuccarello scored his second of the game and seventh of the season in the third period, with the help of J.T. Miller and Ryan McDonagh. The Devils got one back with a Miles Wood goal, his seventh of the year, courtesy of Pavel Zacha and Will Butcher. New York answered on a Kevin Hayes goal, his sixth of the campaign, with helpers from Nash and Fast. This stood for a 5-2 win, with the three stars being Zuccarello, Fast, and Nash.

West to Pittsburgh, as the Penguins welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen and Tristan Jarry are in the blue paint. Toronto started in the first period with a Connor Brown goal, his ninth of the season, via Morgan Rielly and Ron Hainsey. The Maple Leafs added on with a James van Riemsdyk goal, his fourteenth of the year, coming off of Mitchell Marner and Tyler Bozak. Toronto extended the lead as Tyler Bozak scored his fifth of the season, thanks to Marner and Roman Polak. Pittsburgh got on the board in the second period with a Riley Sheahan goal, his third of the year, helped along by Dominik Simon and Brian Dumoulin. The Penguins got closer with an Evgeni Malkin power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Phil Kessel. The Maple Leafs answered on a Bozak goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year, with assists provided by Jake Gardiner and Marner. Pittsburgh replied in the third period with a Sidney Crosby goal, his thirteenth of the campaign, made possible by Kris Letang and Simon. This only made it 4-3, the final, with the three stars given to Bozak, Marner, and Simon.

Down in Tampa Bay, the Lightning bring in the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Andrei Vasilevskiy protect the nets. Winnipeg struck first in the first period with an Andrew Copp goal, his fourth of the season, passed from Adam Lowry and Brandon Tanev. Tampa Bay tied it on a Yanni Gourde power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Brayden Point and Tyler Johnson. The Lightning took the lead with a Mikhail Sergachev goal, his seventh of the season, via Jonson and Ondrej Palat in the second period. The Jets tied it again with a Kyle Connor goal, his tenth of the year, fueled by Josh Morrissey and Blake Wheeler. Winnipeg gained the lead in the third period with a Nikolaj Ehlers goal, his thirteenth of the season, assisted by Jacob Trouba and Patrik Laine. Tampa Bay retied it on a Nikita Kucherov goal, his twentieth of the year, guided in by Jake Dotchin and Steven Stamkos. The Lightning won 4-3 in overtime with a Point goal, his twelfth of the campaign, made possible by Anton Stralman. The three stars were Point, Johnson, and Kucherov.

Staying in the state, the Florida Panthers host the Colorado Avalanche. Semyon Varlamov and James Reimer are the veterans in goal. Colorado was first to score in the first period with a Mikko Rantanen goal, his ninth of the season, via Mark Barberio and Gabriel Landeskog. Florida tied it on an Aaron Ekblad goal, his sixth of the year, assisted by Jonathan Huberdeau and Keith Yandle. The Panthers went ahead on a Denis Malgin goal, his fourth of the season, guided in by Jamie McGinn and Jared McCann. The Avalanche retied it on a Nathan MacKinnon goal, his eleventh of the year, fueled by J.T. Compher and Patrik Nemeth. Colorado took the lead with an Alexander Kerfoot goal, his ninth of the season, passed from Tyson Barrie and Rantanen. The Avalanche added on in the third period with an Erik Johnson goal, his fourth of the year, with a lone assist by Matt Nieto. Colorado extended the lead as Colin Wilson scored his second of the season, thanks to Compher and Sven Andrighetto. Florida got one back with a Huberdeau goal, his ninth of the year, dished from Yandle and Vincent Trocheck. The Avalanche countered with a Nieto empty net goal, his fourth of the season, set up by Blake Comeau and Carl Soderberg. Colorado iced it at 7-3 with a Soderberg empty net goal, his fourth of the year, with helpers from Comeau and Nieto. Back north, the Columbus Blue Jackets welcome the Arizona Coyotes. Antti Raanta and Sergei Bobrovsky are between the pipes. Columbus led off in the first period with a Josh Anderson goal, his eleventh of the season, via Artemi Panarin and Pierre-Luc Dubois. This stood throughout the game for a 1-0 win, with the three stars awarded to Bobrovsky (35 save shutout), Raanta (33 for 34 in saves), and Anderson.

Down in Dallas, the Stars bring in the Vegas Golden Knights. Maxime Lagace and Ben Bishop are the goalies. Vegas began in the first period with an Alex Tuch goal, his seventh of the season, assisted by Brendan Leipsic and Cody Eakin. Dallas tied it on a Tyler Pitlick goal, his third of the year, via Antoine Roussel and Radek Faksa. The Golden Knights retook the lead on a David Perron power play goal in the second period, his seventh of the season, powered by James Neal. The Stars retied it on a Jason Spezza goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Mattias Janmark and John Klingberg. Vegas answered with a Reilly Smith goal, his eighth of the season, passed from Jonathan Marchessault. The Golden Knights added on with a Brayden McNabb goal, his second of the year, fueled by Leipsix and Eakin. Dallas pulled one back with a Jamie Benn goal, his twelfth of the season, coming off of Tyler Seguin and Esa Lindell. Vegas iced it at 5-3 with an Erik Haula empty net goal, his eleventh of the year, set up by Perron. The three stars went to Perron, Leipsic, and Eakin.

In Alberta, the Calgary Flames host the Vancouver Canucks. Anders Nilsson is mismatched with Mike Smith in goal. Vancouver opened in the first period with a Jake Virtanen goal, his fourth of the season, with a lone assist by Michael Del Zotto. Calgary tied it on a Troy Brouwer goal, his second of the year, helped along by Curtis Lazar. The Canucks took the lead back in the second period with a Brock Boeser power play goal, his fifteenth of the season, powered by Markus Granlund and Daniel Sedin. The Flames tied it in the third period with a Matthew Tkachuk goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Garnet Hathaway and Mikael Backlund. Calgary took the lead on a Sam Bennett goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Mark Jankowski and Hathaway. The Flames iced it at 4-2 with a Tkachuk empty net goal, his sixth of the year, set up by Michael Frolik and Travis Hamonic. The three stars went to Tkachuk, Hathaway, and Bennett.

Down in California, the San Jose Sharks welcome the Ottawa Senators. Craig Anderson and Aaron Dell have the green light to play in goal. San Jose started in the first period with a Logan Couture goal, his fifteenth of the season, coming off of Kevin Labanc and Justin Braun. The Sharks added on with a Marc-Edouard Vlasic goal in the second period, his third of the year, via Tim Heed and Labanc. San Jose extended the lead as Melker Karlsson scored his fifth of the season, thanks to Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton. The Sharks padded the lead on a Pavelski power play goal in the third period, his sixth of the year, powered by Couture and Brent Burns. Finally, the Los Angeles Kings bring in the Carolina Hurricanes. Scott Darling and Jonathan Quick guard the cages. Los Angeles dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Tyler Toffoli goal, his fourteenth of the season, via Anze Kopitar and Tanner Pearson. The Kings added on with a Kopitar goal, his sixteenth of the year, helped along by Toffoli and Christian Folin. Carolina got on the board with a Victor Rask power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Teuvo Teravainen. The Hurricanes tied it on an Elias Lindholm goal, his eighth of the year, coming off of Derek Ryan and Brock McGinn. Los Angeles won 3-2 in overtime with a Pearson goal, his sixth of the campaign, assisted by Jake Muzzin and the goalie Quick. The three stars belonged to Pearson, Kopitar, and Toffoli.
