NHL 2018/19 - Day 48

Nine games on across the league tonight, beginning with...

The New York Rangers hosting the Dallas Stars. Ben Bishop and Henrik Lundqvist guard the cages. Dallas got going in the second period with a Tyler Seguin power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Esa Lindell and Jason Spezza. New York tied it on a Jimmy Vesey goal, his seventh of the year, via Marc Staal and Brett Howden. Anton Khudobin replaced Bishop for the third period. The Rangers retook the lead on a Filip Chytil goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Brendan Smith in the third period. This held for a 2-1 Rangers win, with the three stars going to Smith, Vesey, and Lundqvist (16 for 17 in saves).

Over in Pittsburgh, the Penguins welcome the Buffalo Sabres. Carter Hutton and Casey DeSmith play in goal. Pittsburgh started in the first period with a Derick Brassard goal, his second of the season, with a lone assist by Patric Hornqvist. Buffalo tied it on a Tage Thompson goal, coming off of Sam Reinhart and Rasmus Ristolainen. The Penguins took the lead back with a Phil Kessel goal, his tenth of the year, courtesy of Tanner Pearson and Evgeni Malkin. Pittsburgh added on in the second period with a Jake Guentzel goal, his seventh of the season, fueled by Hornqvist. The Penguins extended the lead as Pearson scored, thanks to Jack Johnson and Malkin. The Sabres got one back on a Zach Bogosian goal, his second of the year, guided in by Jeff Skinner and Jack Eichel. Buffalo pulled closer with a Casey Nelson goal, made possible by Kyle Okposo and Conor Sheary. The Sabres tied it in the third period with a Casey Mittelstadt goal, his third of the season, with helpers from Okposo and Bogosian. Buffalo won 5-4 in overtime on an Eichel goal, his fifth of the year, helped along by Ristolainen. The three stars were Eichel, Bogosian, and Ristolainen, while Okposo, Pearson, Hornqvist, and Malkin get the honorable mentions.

In Canada, the Toronto Maple Leafs bring in the Columbus Blue Jackets. Sergei Bobrovsky and Frederik Andersen tend the twines. Columbus opened in the first period with a Cam Atkinson goal, his thirteenth of the season, with a lone assist from Pierre-Luc Dubois. The Blue Jackets added on with a Dubois goal, his tenth of the year, coming off of Atkinson and Artemi Panarin. Toronto got on the board in the second period with a Tyler Ennis goal, his third of the season, made possible by Frederik Gauthier and Ron Hainsey. The Maple Leafs tied it with a John Tavares goal, his thirteenth of the year, via Mitchell Marner and Kasperi Kapanen. The Maple Leafs took the lead in the third period with a Zach Hyman goal, his second of the season, guided in by Morgan Rielly and Tavares. Toronto iced it at 4-2 with a Hyman empty net goal, his second of the game and third of the year, set up by Marner and Hainsey. The three stars were given to Tavares, Hyman, and Dubois, while Atkinson, Hainsey, and Marner take the honorable mentions.

Over in Quebec, the Montreal Canadiens host the Washington Capitals. Pheonix Copley is mismatched with Carey Price in goal. Montreal led off in the first period with a Mike Reilly goal, his second of the season, helped along by Matthew Peca. Washington tied it on a Brett Connolly goal, his third of the year, passed from John Carlson and Dmitry Orlov. The Capitals took the lead with an Alex Ovechkin goal, his fourteenth of the season, assisted by Tom Wilson and Orlov. The Canadiens tied it in the second period with a Brendan Gallagher goal, his tenth of the year, courtesy of Phillip Danault and Jeff Petry. Montreal pulled ahead with a Petry power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Max Domi. The Canadiens added on with a Kenny Agostino goal, coming off of Artturi Lehkonen and Kotkaniemi. Washington got one back with a Nicklas Backstrom goal, his sixth of the year, fueled by Christian Djoos and Madison Bowey. The Capitals tied it in the third period with an Ovechkin goal, his second of the game and fifteenth of the season, coming on the power play from Carlson and Wilson. Washington won 5-4 in overtime with a Lars Eller goal, his fourth of the year, via Jakub Vrana and Michal Kempny. The three stars were Ovechkin, Carlson, and Wilson, while Orlov, Petry, and Kotkaniemi earn the honorable mentions.

Back in Ontario, the Ottawa Senators welcome the Florida Panthers. James Reimer and Craig Anderson are between the pipes. Ottawa struck first in the first period with a Matt Duchene goal, his ninth of the season, helped along by Christian Jaros and Thomas Chabot. Florida tied it on a Troy Brouwer goal, his fourth of the year, via Juho Lammikko. The Panthers took the lead on an Aleksander Barkov power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Vincent Trocheck and Keith Yandle. Florida added on with a Jared McCann goal, his second of the year, with a lone helper by Dryden Hunt. After medical emergencies on and off the ice, the Panthers extended the lead as Evgenii Dadonov scored his ninth of the season, with the help of Barkov and Aaron Ekblad. The Senators got one back with a Duchene goal, his second of the game and tenth of the year, courtesy of Drake Batherson in the second period proper. Ottawa got closer with a Batherson power play goal, his second of the season, with assists provided by Duchene and Maxime Lajoie. Florida answered with a Micheal Haley goal, assisted by Lammikko and Ekblad. The Panthers padded the lead on a Frank Vatrano goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Lammikko. The Senators pulled back in the third period with a Zack Smith goal, his third of the season, dished from Bobby Ryan and Mark Borowiecki. Ottawa chipped closer on a Brady Tkachuk goal, his sixth of the year, with helpers from Mark Stone and Chris Tierney. Florida capped it at 7-5 with a Mike Hoffman goal, his ninth of the campaign, fueled by Lammikko and Jonathan Huberdeau. The three stars belonged to Lammikko, Barkov, and Duchene, while Batherson and Ekblad take the honorable mentions.

Stateside, the St. Louis Blues bring in the Los Angeles kings. Calvin Petersen and Jake Allen are in the creases. Los Angeles dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Matt Luff goal, assisted by Adrian Kempe and Carl Hagelin. The Kings iced it at 2-0 in the third period with an empty net goal by Anze Kopitar, his sixth of the campaign, set up by Dustin Brown and Drew Doughty. The three stars were awarded to Petersen (29 save shutout), Luff, and Allen (25 for 26 in saves).

Further along, the Nashville Predators host the Tampa Bay Lightning in a clash of titans. Louis Domingue and Pekka Rinne man the nets. Tampa Bay was first to score in the first period with a Victor Hedman goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Brayden Point and Erik Cernak. Nashville tied it on a Kyle Turris power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Calle Jarnkrok and Mattias Ekholm. The Predators took the lead in the second period with a Filip Forsberg goal, his thirteenth of the season, via Ekholm and Ryan Johansen. Nashville added on with a Johansen goal, his fourth of the year, guided in by Craig Smith and Roman Josi. The Lightning got one back in the third period with a Nikita Kucherov goal, his eighth of the campaign, passed from Point and Ryan McDonagh. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars going to Johansen, Ekholm, and Point.

Northwest to Alberta, as the Calgary Flames welcome the Vegas Golden Knights. Malcolm Subban and David Rittich are the backups in goal. Calgary drew first blood in the first period with a Matthew Tkachuk power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Johnny Gaudreau and Mark Giordano. The Flames added on with a Gaudreau goal, his seventh of the year, via Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm. Calgary extended the lead as Monahan scored his eleventh of the season, thanks to Gaudreau. The Flames padded the lead on a T.J. Brodie goal, made possible by Tkachuk and Giordano. Calgary kept going with another Monahan goal on the power play, his second of the game and twelfth of the year, helped along by Tkachuk and Gaudreau, the latter earning a sock trick. The Flames struck again in the second period on another Tkachuk goal, his second of the game and eleventh of the season, assisted by Mikael Backlund. Calgary continued on a Sam Bennett power play goal, his third of the year, with assists provided by Derek Ryan and Noah Hanifin. Vegas got on the board in the third period with a Nick Holden goal, his third of the season, courtesy of Ryan Reaves and William Karlsson. The Golden Knights got closer with a Max Pacioretty power play goal, his fourth of the year, with helpers from Reilly Smith and Jonathan Marchessault. The final remained at 7-2, with the three stars awarded to Tkachuk, Gaudreau, and Monahan, while Giordano gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Vancouver Canucks bring in the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Jacob Markstrom are the masked men. Winnipeg kicked off the scoring in the first period with an unassisted Bryan Little goal, his fourth of the season. Vancouver tied it on an Elias Pettersson power play goal, his twelfth of the year, powered by Ben Hutton and Nikolay Goldobin. The Jets took the lead back with a Mark Scheifele goal, his eleventh of the season, via Nikolaj Ehlers and Jacob Trouba. Winnipeg added on with a Kyle Connor power play goal, his tenth of the year, assisted by Scheifele and Dustin Byfuglien. The Jets extended the lead as Patrik Laine scored his ninth of the season in the second period, with the help of Connor. The Canucks got one back on a Tyler Motte shorthanded goal, his second of the year, set up by Bo Horvat. Vancouver pulled closer on a Goldobin goal, his third of the season, going in unassisted. Winnipeg responded in the third period with a Laine goal, his second of the game and tenth of the year, with helpers from Little and Connor. The Jets iced it at 6-3 with a Laine empty net goal to complete his hat trick, his eleventh of the campaign made possible by Connor, who had a sock trick, and Tyler Myers. The three stars were Laine, Connor, and Scheifele, while Little and Goldobin get the honorable mentions.
