NHL 2018/19 - Day 129

Twelve games on for a busy Saturday slate. First up...

The Philadelphia Flyers host the Detroit Red Wings. Jimmy Howard and Carter Hart are set to start in goal. Philadelphia began in the first period with a Shayne Gostisbehere goal, his sixth of the season, made possible by Nolan Patrick and Scott Laughton. Detroit tied it on a Gustav Nyquist goal, his fifteenth of the year, via Tyler Bertuzzi and Mike Green. The Flyers retook the lead in the second period with a Travis Konecny power play goal, his sixteenth of the season, powered by Ivan Provorov and Sean Couturier. Philadelphia added on with a Laughton goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Wayne Simmonds and Patrick. The Flyers extended the lead in the third period as Jakub Voracek scored his fifteenth of the season, thanks to Oskar Lindblom. Philadelphia padded the lead on a Patrick goal, his twelfth of the year, coming off of Simmonds and Andrew MacDonald. The Red Wings got one back with a Bertuzzi goal, his fourteenth of the season, fueled by Dylan Lakin. Detroit pulled closer with an unassisted Thomas Vanek goal, his twelfth of the year. The Red Wings got closer with an Anthony Mantha goal, his thirteenth of the season, courtesy of Danny DeKeyser and Christoffer Ehn. Detroit tied it on Mantha's second of the game and fourteenth of the year, dished from Mike Green and Niklas Kronwall. The Flyers won 6-5 in overtime with Konecny's second goal of the game and seventeenth of the campaign, assisted by Couturier and Gostisbehere. The three stars were Konecny, Mantha, and Patrick, while Laughton, Simmonds, Couturier, Gostisbehere, Bertuzzi, and Green get the honorable mentions.

Across Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Penguins welcome the Calgary Flames. Mike Smith and Matt Murray are in the creases. Calgary led off in the first period with an Andrew Mangiapane goal, his second of the season, helped along by Oliver Kylington and Derek Ryan. Pittsburgh tied it on a Jake Guentzel goal, his twenty-eighth of the year, assisted by Justin Schultz and Nick Bjugstad. The Flames took the lead back with a Michael Frolik goal, his twelfth of the season, passed from Matthew Tkachuk and Rasmus Andersson. Calgary added on with an Austin Czarnik goal, his third of the year, with a lone helper from Ryan. The Penguins got one back on a Sidney Crosby power play goal, his twenty-fifth of the season, powered by Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel. The Flames shot back with a Travis Hamonic goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm. Calgary extended the lead as Sam Bennett scored his eleventh of the season on the power play, with the help of Ryan, who earned a sock trick, and Mikael Backlund. Casey DeSmith replaced Murray in goal for the third period. Pittsburgh got one back in the third period with a Malkin power play goal, his fifteenth of the year, with assists provided by Crosby and Kessel. The Penguins got closer with another Malkin power play goal, his second of the game and sixteenth of the season, helped along by Kris Letang and Crosby. This only made it 5-4, the final, with the three stars going to Ryan, Malkin, and Crosby, while Kessel gets an honorable mention.

Out west, the Colorado Avalanche bring in the St. Louis Blues. Jake Allen and Semyon Varlamov are the veterans in goal. St. Louis dented the scoreboard in the third period with a Vladimir Tarasenko goal, his twenty-fifth of the season, made possible by Ryan O'Reilly and Brayden Schenn. The Blues added on with a Zach Sanford goal, his seventh of the year, via Oskar Sundqvist and Pat Maroon. St. Louis iced it at 3-0 with a Jaden Schwartz empty net goal, his fifth of the campaign, set up by Tarasenko and Tyler Bozak. The three stars were Tarasenko, Allen (32 save shutout), and Sanford.

Back east, the New York Islanders host the Edmonton Oilers. Mikko Koskinen and Robin Lehner are the goalies. New York got going in the second period with a Ryan Pulock power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Devon Toews and Josh Bailey. The Islanders added on with a Valtteri Filppula goal, his twelfth of the year, via Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk. Edmonton got on the board with a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins goal, his eighteenth of the season, passed from Kris Russell and Tobias Rieder. New York replied in the third period with a Mathew Barzal goal, his seventeenth of the year, courtesy of Toews and Bailey. The Oilers pulled one back with a Leon Draisaitl power play goal, his thirty-fifth of the season, with assists provided by Connor McDavid and Oscar Klefbom. The Islanders shot back with an Anders Lee goal, his nineteenth of the year, with a lone assist by Leo Komarov. New York iced it at 5-2 with a Brock Nelson empty net goal, his eighteenth of the campaign, going in unassisted. The three stars were Toews, Bailey, and Lehner (34 for 36 in saves).

Down in Tampa Bay, the Lightning welcome the Montreal Canadiens. Carey Price and Andrei Vasilevskiy tend the twines. Tampa Bay cracked the scoresheet in the third period with a Nikita Kucherov power play goal, his twenty-seventh of the season, powered by Steven Stamkos and Ondrej Palat. The Lightning added on with a Yanni Gourde goal, his sixteenth of the year, assisted by Brayden Point and Kucherov. Tampa Bay extended the lead as Tyler Johnson scored his twenty-first of the campaign, with the help of Stamkos and Palat. The final held at 3-0, with the three stars awarded to Kucherov, Vasilevskiy (20 save shutout), and Stamkos, while Palat gets an honorable mention.

Way out west, the Arizona Coyotes bring in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen and Darcy Kuemper are in the blue paint. Arizona drew first blood in the second period with an Alex Galchenyuk goal, his thirteenth of the season, coming off of Jordan Oesterle. The Coyotes added on with a Josh Archibald goal, his seventh of the year, made possible by Derek Stepan and Lawson Crouse. This was it for the scoring in a 2-0 Coyotes win, with the three stars handed to Kuemper (22 save shutout), Galchenyuk, and Archibald.

Northeast to Winnipeg, as the Jets host the Ottawa Senators. Anders Nilsson and Laurent Brossoit receive the starting nods in goal. Ottawa opened in the first period with a Mark Stone power play goal, his twenty-seventh of the season, powered by Brady Tkachuk and Matt Duchene. Winnipeg tied it on a shorthanded Brandon Tanev goal, his thirteenth of the year, coming off of Adam Lowry. The Jets took the lead with a shorthanded Tyler Myers goal, his sixth of the season, with a lone assist by Tanev. The Senators tied it in the second period with a Rudolfs Balcers power play goal, his second of the year, with assists provided by Ryan Dzingel and Christian Jaros. Ottawa pulled ahead in the third period with a Duchene power play goal, his twenty-seventh of the season, courtesy of Bobby Ryan and Stone. Winnipeg tied it again with a Myers goal, his second of the game and seventh of the year, guided in by Jack Roslovic and Bryan Little. The Senators won 4-3 in overtime with a Dzingel goal, his twenty-second of the campaign, fueled by Chris Tierney and Jaros. The three stars were given to Duchene, Stone, and Dzingel, while Jaros, Myers, and Tanev get the honorable mentions.

Southeast to Raleigh, where the Carolina Hurricanes welcome the Dallas Stars. Anton Khudobin and Petr Mrazek are the average goalies. Carolina started in the first period with a Justin Williams goal, his fifteenth of the season, via Sebastian Aho and Nino Niederreiter. The Hurricanes added on with a Brock McGinn goal, his seventh of the year, passed from Justin Faulk. Carolina extended the lead on a Micheal Ferland power play goal in the third period, his sixteenth of the campaign, powered by Andrei Svechnikov and Lucas Wallmark. This stood for a 3-0 win, with the three stars awarded to Mrazek (33 save shutout), Williams, and McGinn.

Northwest to Chicago, as the Blackhawks bring in the Columbus Blue Jackets. Sergei Bobrovsky and Cam Ward are between the pipes. Columbus struck first in the first period with a Pierre-Luc Dubois goal, his twenty-second of the season, courtesy of David Savard. Chicago tied it on a Patrick Kane power play goal, his thirty-fifth of the year, powered by Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome. The Blue Jackets retook the lead with an Artemi Panarin goal, his twenty-third of the season, via Oliver Bjorkstrand and Dubois. Columbus added on with a Cam Atkinson goal, his thirty-second of the year, guided in by Panarin and Ryan Murray. The Blackhawks got one back in the second period with a Jonathan Toews goal, his twenty-seventh of the season, helped along by Erik Gustafsson and Kane. The Blue Jackets shot back in the third period with a Panarin goal, his second of the game and twenty-fourth of the year, passed from Seth Jones and Murray. Columbus extended the lead as Josh Anderson scored his twentieth of the campaign, thanks to Murray, who got a sock trick. This made it 5-2, the final, with the three stars given to Panarin, Murray, and Kane, while Dubois gets an honorable mention.

Out in California, the San Jose Sharks host the Vancouver Canucks. Jacob Markstrom and Martin Jones are the veterans in goal. San Jose was first to score in the first period with a Timo Meier power play goal, his twenty-first of the season, powered by Erik Karlsson and Evander Kane. Vancouver tied it on an Antoine Roussel goal, his seventh of the year, assisted by Alex Biega. The Sharks took the lead in the second period on a Logan Couture goal, his twenty-first of the season, made possible by Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns. The Canucks tied it in the third period with a Brock Boeser goal, his twenty-first of the year, courtesy of Elias Pettersson and Derrick Pouliot. San Jose regained the lead on a Pavelski goal, his thirty-first of the season, coming off of Meier and Couture. This made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars handed to Pavelski, Couture, and Meier.

Back in Nevada, the Vegas Golden Knights welcome the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros and Malcolm Subban are the backups in goal. Vegas kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Max Pacioretty goal, his seventeenth of the season, made possible by Cody Eakin and Oscar Lindberg. The Golden Knights added on in the second period with a Brandon Pirri power play goal, his tenth of the year, powered by Reilly Smith and William Karlsson. Vegas extended the lead as Shea Theodore scored his ninth of the season in the third period, thanks to Paul Stastny and Alex Tuch. Nashville got on the board with a Kevin Fiala goal, his tenth of the year, fueled by Mattias Ekholm. The Golden Knights replied with a Lindberg goal, his fourth of the season, via Tuch. Vegas padded the lead with an unassisted Pacioretty goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the year. The final held from here at 5-1, with the three stars going to Pacioretty, Lindberg, and Tuch.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings bring in the Boston Bruins. Tuukka Rask and Jack Campbell are in the creases. Boston got on the board first in the first period with a Jake DeBrusk goal, his seventeenth of the season, assisted by Peter Cehlarik and David Krejci. Los Angeles tied it in the second period with an Ilya Kovalchuk power play goal, his twelfth of the year, powered by Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty. The Bruins took the lead back with a Brad Marchand goal, his twenty-third of the season, helped along by Patrice Bergeron. The Kings tied it in the third period on an Alex Iafallo goal, his twelfth of the year, coming off of Paul LaDue and Adrian Kempe. Boston regained the lead with a Charlie McAvoy goal, his third of the season, passed from DeBrusk and Krejci. The Bruins iced it at 4-2 with an unassisted Bergeron goal, his twenty-first of the year. The final remained at 4-2, with the three stars going to DeBrusk, Bergeron, and Krejci.
