NHL 2019-20 - Day 130

We've got eleven games today, including five early ones. First up...

The Boston Bruins host the Detroit Red Wings. Jonathan Bernier and Tuukka Rask are the masked men. Detroit led off in the first period with a Darren Helm shorthanded goal, his ninth of the season, going in unassisted. Boston tied it on an unassisted goal by Charlie McAvoy in the second period, his second of the year. The Bruins took the lead with a Patrice Bergeron shorthanded goal, his twenty-fifth of the season, set up by Brad Marchand. Boston added on with a Charlie Coyle goal, his thirteenth of the year, guided in by McAvoy and Danton Heinen. The Bruins iced it at 4-1 in the third period with a David Pastrnak goal, his forty-second of the campaign, coming off of Marchand.The three stars were McAvoy, Marchand, and Rask (25 for 26 in saves).

Over in St. Louis, the Blues welcome the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros and Jake Allen are set to start in goal. Nashville began in the first period with a Viktor Arvidsson goal, his thirteenth of the season, made possible by Mikael Granlund and Ryan Johansen. The Predators added on with a Matt Duchene goal, his twelfth of the year, via Filip Forsberg and Kyle Turris. St. Louis got on the board in the second period with a Zach Sanford goal, his thirteenth of the season, courtesy of Sammy Blais and Robert Thomas. Nashville replied with a Turris goal, his eighth of the year, passed from Duchene and Dan Hamhuis. St. Louis shot back on a Jaden Schwartz power play goal, his eighteenth of the season, powered by Brayden Schenn and David Perron. The Blues tied it on an Alexander Steen goal, his sixth of the year, coming off of Jordan Kyrou and Tyler Bozak. The Predators regained the lead in the third period with a Granlund power play goal, his fourteenth of the campaign, with assists provided by Roman Josi and Turris. This stood for a 4-3 win, with the three stars given to Granlund, Turris, and Duchene.

Southeast to Florida, as the Tampa Bay Lightning bring in the Philadelphia Flyers. Carter Hart and Andrei Vasilevskiy man the nets. Tampa Bay opened in the first period with an Alex Killorn goal, his twenty-second of the season, coming off of Kevin Shattenkirk and Mikhail Sergachev. The Lightning added on with a Cedric Paquette goal, his sixth of the year, via Tyler Johnson and Pat Maroon. Tampa Bay extended the lead in the second period as Carter Verhaeghe scored his eighth of the season, thanks to Victor Hedman and Yanni Gourde. Philadelphia got on the board with an Ivan Provorov power play goal, his eleventh of the year, powered by Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier. The Lightning countered in the third period with a Brayden Point goal, his twenty-first of the season, assisted by Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov. The Flyers pulled back with a James van Riemsdyk power play goal, his eighteenth of the year, with helpers from Matt Niskanen and Travis Sanheim. Philadelphia got closer with a Giroux goal, his sixteenth of the season, fueled by Provorov and Travis Konecny. Tampa Bay iced it at 5-3 with a Kucherov empty net goal, his twenty-eighth of the year, set up by Stamkos and Hedman. The three stars were Kucherov, Giroux, and Provorov, while Stamkos and Hedman get the honorable mentions.

Staying in the state, the Florida Panthers host the Edmonton Oilers. Mikko Koskinen and Sam Montembeault are the backups in goal. Edmonton started in the first period with an Adam Larsson goal, via Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Kailer Yamamoto. The Oilers added on in the third period with a Leon Draisaitl goal, his thirty-third of the season, assisted by Yamamoto and Nugent-Hopkins. Florida got on the board with a Jonathan Huberdeau goal, his twenty-first of the year, passed from Aaron Ekblad and Evgenii Dadonov. Edmonton responded with an unassisted empty net goal by Darnell Nurse, his fifth of the season. The Oilers extended the lead as Yamamoto scored his eighth of the year into an empty net, thanks to Draisaitl. This stood for a 4-1 win, with the three stars awarded to Yamamoto, Draisaitl, and Nugent-Hopkins.

Way up north, the Minnesota Wild welcome the San Jose Sharks. Martin Jones and Alex Stalock are set to start in goal. San Jose dented the scoreboard in the third period with a Dylan Gambrell goal, his third of the season, assisted by Brent Burns and Antti Suomela. The Sharks iced it at 2-0 with a Melker Karlsson empty net goal, his fifth of the year, set up by Barclay Goodrow and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. The three stars were Jones (39 save shutout), Gambrell, and Karlsson.

In Canada, the Montreal Canadiens bring in the Dallas Stars. Ben Bishop and Carey Price tend the twines. Montreal struck first in the first period with a Joel Armia goal, his fifteenth of the season, assisted by Max Domi and Artturi Lehkonen. The Canadiens added on with a Jordan Weal goal, his sixth of the year, passed from Nick Suzuki and Ben Chiarot in the second period. Montreal extended the lead as Nick Cousins scored his ninth of the season, thanks to Victor Mete. Dallas got on the board with a Mattias Janmark goal, his sixth of the year, courtesy of Joe Pavelski. The Stars got closer with a Tyler Seguin power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, powered by John Klingberg and Pavelski. Dallas tied it as Blake Comeau scored his eighth of the year, with the help of Andrew Cogliano in the third period. The Stars won 4-3 in overtime on a Seguin goal, his second of the game and fourteenth of the campaign, with a lone helper by Klingberg.

Over to Ontario, where the Ottawa Senators host provincial rivals in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jack Campbell and Craig Anderson make the starts. Toronto kicked off the scoring in the first period with an Auston Matthews goal, his forty-second of the season, via Zach Hyman and Travis Dermott. The Maple Leafs added on in the second period with a Jake Muzzin goal, his fourth of the year, passed from Alexander Kerfoot and Timothy Liljegren. Toronto extended the lead as William Nylander scored his twenty-sixth of the season, thanks to John Tavares. Marcus Hogberg replaced Anderson in goal. Ottawa got on the board with a Connor Brown goal, his eleventh of the year, courtesy of Vladislav Namestnikov and Chris Tierney. The Senators got closer with a Cody Goloubef goal in the third period, made possible by Thomas Chabot and Brady Tkachuk. The Maple Leafs capped it at 4-2 with a Mitchell Marner empty net goal, his fifteenth of the campaign, set up by Matthews. The three stars were Matthews, Nylander, and Muzzin.

Stateside, the Colorado Avalanche welcome the Los Angeles Kings to the Air Force Academy's Falcon Stadium. Jonathan Quick and Philipp Grubauer are in the blue paint. Los Angeles was first to score in the first period with a Tyler Toffoli goal, his sixteenth of the season, coming off of Alex Iafallo and Joakim Ryan. Colorado tied it in the second period with a Samuel Girard goal, his third of the year, via Mikko Rantanen. Pavel Francouz relieved an injured Grubauer in the third period. The Kings took the lead on another Toffoli goal, his second of the game and seventeenth of the season, assisted by Anze Kopitar. Los Angeles iced it at 3-1 with a Toffoli empty net goal to complete his hat trick on his eighteenth of the year, set up by Kopitar and Iafallo. The three stars were awarded to Toffoli, Quick (32 for 33 in saves), and Kopitar, while Iafallo gets an honorable mention.

North to Calgary, where the Flames bring in the Chicago Blackhawks. Robin Lehner and David Rittich protect the nets. Chicago drew first blood in the first period with a Jonathan Toews goal, his sixteenth of the season, courtesy of Dominik Kubalik and Slater Koekkoek. Calgary tied it on a Sam Bennett goal, his sixth of the year, via Dillon Dube and Milan Lucic. The Blackhawks replied on a Kubalik goal, his twenty-third of the season, guided in by Toews and Patrick Kane. The Flames retied it on another Bennett goal, his second of the game and seventh of the year, passed from Dube and Oliver Kylington. Chicago regained the lead with a Brandon Saad goal, his eighteenth of the season, assisted by Kane and Erik Gustafsson. The Blackhawks added on with an Alex Nylander goal, his seventh of the year, going in unassisted. Cam Talbot replaced Rittich in goal. Calgary got one back with an Elias Lindholm goal, his twenty-sixth of the season, fueled by Johnny Gaudreau and Kylington. Chicago answered on an Alex DeBrincat goal, his fourteenth of the year, with a lone helper by Dylan Strome and Kirby Dach. The Blackhawks extended the lead as Nylander scored his second of the game and eighth of the season, thanks to Matthew Highmore. The Flames chipped back in the third period on a Lindholm power play goal, his second of the game and twenty-seventh of the year, powered by Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk. Chicago countered with a Kane shorthanded empty net goal, his twenty-sixth of the season, set up by Toews. The Blackhawks padded the lead with a Dach goal, his eighth of the year, with assists from Drake Caggiula and Connor Murphy. This made it 8-4, the final, with the three stars handed to Toews, Kane, and Nylander, while Lindholm, Bennett, Kubalik, Dach, Gaudreau, Dube, and Kylington get the honorable mentions.

Down in the desert, the Arizona Coyotes host the Washington Capitals. Braden Holtby and Antti Raanta have the green light to play in goal. Arizona got going in the second period with a Christian Dvorak goal, his eighteenth of the season, assisted by Conor Garland and Alex Goligoski. Washington tied it on a Carl Hagelin goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Travis Boyd and Richard Panik. The Coyotes took the lead on a Phil Kessel power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, powered by Jakob Chychrun and Clayton Keller. Arizona iced it at 3-1 with a Lawson Crouse empty net goal, his fourteenth of the year, set up by Derek Stepan and Chychrun. The three stars went to Raanta (36 for 37 in saves), Kessel, and Chychrun.

Finally, the Vegas Golden Knights host the New York Islanders. Semyon Varlamov and Marc-Andre Fleury are the veteran goalies. Vegas cracked the scoresheet in the second period with a Reilly Smith goal, his twenty-second of the season, coming off of Jonathan Marchessault and Nate Schmidt. The final remained at 1-0, with the three stars belonging to Fleury (19 save shutout), Smith, and Varlamov (42 for 43 in saves).
