NHL 2023-24 - Day 66

It's a 13-game Saturday slate, beginning with one matinee as...

The Minnesota Wild host the Vancouver Canucks. Casey DeSmith and Filip Gustavsson man the nets. Minnesota started in the first period with a Frederick Gaudreau goal, his second of the season, via Marcus Foligno and Pat Maroon. Vancouver tied it in the second period on a Teddy Blueger goal, his third of the year, courtesy of Dakota Joshua and Conor Garland. The tie went to a shootout, where the Wild won 2-1 with a lone tally by Mats Zuccarello. The three stars were Gustavsson (35 for 36 in saves), DeSmith (30 for 31 in saves), and Gaudreau. 

East to Boston, as the Bruins welcome the New York Rangers. Igor Shesterkin and Jeremy Swayman guard the cages. Boston got going in the second period with a Trent Frederic goal, his seventh of the season, guided in by James van Riemsdyk and Matthew Poitras. New York tied it in the third period with a Vincent Trocheck power play goal, his seventh of the year, powered by Mika Zibanejad. The Rangers won 2-1 in overtime with a Trocheck goal, his second of the game and eighth of the campaign, assisted by Artemi Panarin and Erik Gustafsson. The three stars were given to Trocheck, Shesterkin (22 for 23 in saves), and Swayman (31 for 33 in saves).

Next up, the Columbus Blue Jackets bring in the New Jersey Devils. Akira Schmid and Daniil Tarasov play in goal. New Jersey opened in the first period with a Jack Hughes goal, his twelfth of the season, coming off of Tyler Toffoli. The Devils added on with an Erik Haula goal, his eighth of the year, courtesy of Dawson Mercer and Alexander Holtz. Columbus got on the board with a Kirill Marchenko power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Johnny Gaudreau. New Jersey replied on a Toffoli goal, his thirteenth of the year, via Jesper Bratt. The Blue Jackets got one back with a Yegor Chinakov goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Andrew Peeke and Dmitri Voronkov. The Devils shot back with a Hughes power play goal, his thirteenth of the year, with assists provided by Bratt and Nico Hischier. New Jersey extended the lead in the third period as Hischier scored his seventh of the season, thanks to Bratt. Columbus got one back on an Alexandre Texier goal, his sixth of the year, passed from Adam Fantilli and David Jiricek. The Devils iced it at 6-3 with a Hughes empty net goal, completing his hat trick on his fourteenth of the campaign, going in unassisted. The three stars were Hughes, Bratt, and Hischier, while Toffoli gets an honorable mention.

In Montreal, the Canadiens host the New York Islanders. Semyon Varlamov and Sam Montembeault are set to start in goal. Montreal dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Joel Armia goal, his fourth of the season, via Brendan Gallagher and Kaiden Guhle. The Canadiens added on with a Josh Anderson goal, his second of the year, fueled by Justin Barron and Sean Monahan. Montreal extended the lead as Anderson scored his second of the game and third of the season, thanks to Monahan and Barron. The Canadiens padded the lead on a Cole Caufield goal, his eighth of the year, made possible by Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky. New York got on the board in the third period with a Brock Nelson shorthanded goal, his fourteenth of the season, set up by Noah Dobson. The Islanders got one back with another Nelson goal, his second of the game and fifteenth of the year, passed from Dobson. New York pulled closer with a Bo Horvat goal, his twelfth of the season, coming off of Dobson. Montreal iced it at 5-3 with an empty net goal by Christian Dvorak, his second of the year, courtesy of Suzuki. The three stars were Anderson, Nelson, and Dobson, while Monahan, Barron, and Suzuki get the honorable mentions.

Back stateside, the Philadelphia Flyers welcome the Detroit Red Wings. Alex Lyon and Samuel Ersson are the backups in goal. Philadelphia led off in the first period with a Cam York goal, his fifth of the season, guided in by Travis Konecny and Tyson Foerster. Ville Husso replaced an injured Lyon in the second period. The final held at 1-0, with the three stars awarded to Ersson (34 save shutout), York, and Husso (18 for 18 in saves in relief).

To Canada again, as the Toronto Maple Leafs bring in the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tristan Jarry and Martin Jones are the veteran goalies. Toronto began in the first period with a Matthew Knies goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Max Domi. The Maple Leafs added on with a Mitchell Marner goal, his thirteenth of the year, via Nicholas Robertson and Domi. Toronto extended the lead as Bobby McMann scored, with the help of Tyler Bertuzzi and Pontus Holmberg. The Maple Leafs padded the lead in the second period on a Domi goal, his second of the season, assisted by Knies and Marner. Alex Nedeljkovic replaced Jarry in goal. Toronto kept going with a John Tavares power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by William Nylander and Morgan Rielly. The Maple Leafs continued with a Noah Gregor power play goal, his fifth of the season, guided in by Bertuzzi and Conor Timmins. Toronto struck again with a Nylander goal in the third period, his fifteenth of the year, with helpers from Bertuzzi and Jake McCabe. The final stood at 7-0, with the three stars handed to Domi, Knies, and Jones (38 save shutout), while Nylander, Marner, and Bertuzzi get the honorable mentions.

Out west, the Winnipeg Jets host the Colorado Avalanche. Ivan Prosvetov is mismatched with Connor Hellebuyck in goal. Winnipeg struck first in the first period with a Gabriel Vilardi goal, his third of the season, fueled by Mark Scheifele and Josh Morrissey. The Jets added on with a Vladislav Gavrikov power play goal, his third of the year, powered by Alex Iafallo and Neal Pionk. Winnipeg extended the lead in the second period as Iafallo scored his fifth of the season, an unassisted goal. Colorado got on the board in the third period with a Jonathan Drouin power play goal, his fourth of the year, with assists provided by Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon. The Jets answered with a Vilardi goal, his second of the game and fourth of the season, made possible by Nikolaj Ehlers and Morrissey. Winnipeg padded the lead on a Nino Niederreiter goal, his eighth of the year, with helpers from Namestnikov and Mason Appleton. The Avalanche got one back with a Jack Johnson goal, his second of the season, helped along by Valeri Nichushkin and MacKinnon. The Jets finished it at 6-2 with an empty net goal by Ehlers, his tenth of the year, set up by Scheifele. The three stars were Vilardi, Namestnikov, and Ehlers, while Scheifele, Iafallo, Morrissey, and MacKinnon get the honorable mentions.

Down in Nashville, the Predators welcome the Washington Capitals. Charlie Lindgren and Juuse Saros protect the nets. Nashville kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Colton Sissons power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Roman Josi and Filip Forsberg. Washington tied it in the second period on a T.J. Oshie power play goal, his second of the year, with assists provided by Dylan Strome and Alex Ovechkin. The Predators retook the lead with a Philip Tomasino goal, his second of the season, made possible by Cole Smith. Nashville added on in the third period with a Yakov Trenin goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Alexandre Carrier and Michael McCarron. This stood for a 3-1 win, with the three stars going to Saros (21 for 22 in saves), Tomasino, and Trenin.

Along to St. Louis, where the Blues bring in the Dallas Stars. Scott Wedgewood and Jordan Binnington are in the creases. Dallas was first to score in the first period with a Mason Marchment goal, his tenth of the season, coming off of Tyler Seguin and Matt Duchene. The Stars added on with a Ty Dellandrea goal, via Sam Steel and Radek Faksa. St. Louis got on the board with a Brandon Saad power play goal, his eighth of the year, powered by Jordan Kyrou and Kevin Hayes. The Blues tied it on a Kyrou goal in the second period, his sixth of the season, courtesy of Torey Krug and Robert Thomas. St. Louis took the lead with a Hayes goal, his ninth of the year, made possible by Alexey Toropchenko and Krug. Dallas tied it on an Evgenii Dadonov goal in the third period, his seventh of the season, with helpers from Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley. The Blues won 4-3 in overtime with a Colton Parayko goal, his fifth of the year, fueled by Kyrou and Thomas. The three stars were Kyrou, Hayes, and Thomas, while Krug gets an honorable mention.

Southwest to Arizona, as the Coyotes host the Buffalo Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Karel Vejmelka are in the blue paint. Arizona cracked the scoresheet in the second period with a Clayton Keller goal, his tenth of the season, via Alexander Kerfoot. The Coyotes added on with a Liam O'Brien goal, his third of the year, courtesy of Logan Cooley. The final stood at 2-0, with the three stars going to Vejmelka (28 save shutout), Keller, and O'Brien.

North to Calgary, as the Flames welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy faces a lesser foe in Dan Vladar in goal. Calgary got going in the second period with an A.J. Greer goal, his fifth of the season, courtesy of Rasmus Andersson and Noah Hanifin. The Flames added on with a MacKenzie Weegar goal, his eighth of the year, via Andrew Mangiapane and Blake Coleman. Calgary extended the lead as Yegor Sharangovich scored his eleventh of the season, thanks to Jordan Oesterle and Elias Lindholm. Tampa Bay got on the board in the third period with a Brayden Point goal, his fourteenth of the year, assisted by Nikita Kucherov. The Lightning got closer with a Steven Stamkos power play goal, his fifteenth of the season, powered by Kucherov and Victor Hedman. The Flames replied with a Connor Zary goal, his seventh of the year, guided in by Oesterle. This stood for a 4-2 win, with the three stars being Oesterle, Kucherov, and Sharangovich.

Also in Alberta, the Edmonton Oilers bring in the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and Calvin Pickard receive the starting nods in goal. Florida led off in the first period with a Carter Verhaeghe goal, his fourteenth of the season, assisted by Sam Bennett and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The Panthers added on with a Brandon Montour goal, courtesy of Verhaeghe and Bennett. Florida extended the lead as Aleksander Barkov scored his eleventh of the year, thanks to Sam Reinhart and Ekman-Larsson. Edmonton got on the board with a Zach Hyman goal, his eighteenth of the season, made possible by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Connor McDavid. The Panthers shot back with a Bennett power play goal, his fourth of the year, powered by Montour and the goalie Bobrovsky. Florida padded the lead in the third period with another Verhaeghe goal, his second of the game and fifteenth of the season, helped along by Matthew Tkachuk. This made it 5-1, the final, with the three stars going to Verhaeghe, Bennett, and Montour, while Ekman-Larsson gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Seattle Kraken host the Los Angeles Kings. Cam Talbot and Joey Daccord guard the cages. Seattle drew first blood in the first period with an Adam Larsson goal, his second of the season, coming off of Devin Shore and Vince Dunn. Los Angeles tied it on a Trevor Moore goal, his fourteenth of the year, via Phillip Danault and Kevin Fiala. The Kings took the lead with an Anze Kopitar power play goal, his twelfth of the season, powered by Quinton Byfield and Adrian Kempe in the second period. The Kraken tied it on an Oliver Bjorkstrand power play goal in the third period, his tenth of the year, with assists provided by Ryker Evans and Jared McCann. The tie went to a shootout, where Kempe, Arthur Kaliyev, Trevor Lewis and Carl Grundstrom lifted the Kings to a 4-3 win over Kailer Yamamoto, Yanni Gourde and Matty Beniers. The three stars went to Talbot (17 for 19 in saves), Kempe, and Daccord (36 for 38 in saves).
