NHL 2023-24 - Day 139

There's nine games on this Tuesday. First up...

The New Jersey Devils host the Florida Panthers. Anthony Stolarz and Akira Schmid are the backups in goal. Florida opened in the first period with a Nick Cousins goal, his fourth of the season, guided in by Matthew Tkachuk. The Panthers added on with an Evan Rodrigues power play goal, his tenth of the year, powered by Tkachuk and Sam Bennett. New Jersey got on the board with a Jack Hughes power play goal, his twenty-first of the season, with assists provided by Jesper Bratt and Luke Hughes. The Devils tied it in the second period with a Timo Meier goal, his fourteenth of the year, going in unassisted. Florida retook the lead with an Eetu Luostarinen goal, his eleventh of the season, made possible by Dmitry Kulikov and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The Panthers extended the lead in the third period as Cousins scored his second of the game and fifth of the year, thanks to Gustav Forsling and Tkachuk. New Jersey pulled one back with a Colin Miller goal, his fourth of the season, with helpers from Bratt and Jack Hughes. Florida iced it at 5-3 with a Sam Reinhart empty net goal, his forty-fifth of the year, set up by Aaron Ekblad. The three stars were Cousins, Tkachuk, and Jack Hughes, while Bratt gets an honorable mention.

In Pittsburgh, the Penguins welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets. Jet Greaves is mismatched with Tristan Jarry in goal. Pittsburgh started in the first period with a Jesse Puljujarvi goal, coming off of Ryan Graves. The Penguins added on with an Evgeni Malkin goal, his eighteenth of the season, assisted by Reilly Smith and Graves. Columbus got on the board in the second period with a Johnny Gaudreau goal, his tenth of the year, fueled by Jack Roslovic and Zach Werenski. The Blue Jackets tied it on an Andrew Peeke goal, made possible by Jake Bean and Alexandre Texier. Pittsburgh pulled ahead with a Rickard Rakell goal, his ninth of the season, going in unassisted. Columbus tied it in the third period with a Roslovic shorthanded goal, his fifth of the year, set up by Peeke. The Penguins retook the lead with a Jeff Carter power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Emil Bemstrom and Smith. Pittsburgh extended the lead as Smith scored his eleventh of the year, thanks to Malkin. This held for a 5-3 win, with the three stars going to Malkin, Smith, and Peeke, while Roslovic and Graves get the honorable mentions.

Over in Boston, the Bruins bring in the Edmonton Oilers. Stuart Skinner and Linus Ullmark protect the nets. Boston dented the scoreboard in the third period with a Pavel Zacha goal, his fifteenth of the season, via Danton Heinen and Parker Wotherspoon. Edmonton tied it on a Leon Draisaitl goal, his thirty-first of the year, passed from Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard. The Oilers won 2-1 in overtime with a Draisaitl goal, his second of the game and thirty-second of the campaign, assisted by McDavid and Bouchard. The three stars were Draisaitl, McDavid, and Bouchard.

To New York, as the Islanders host the St. Louis Blues. Joel Hofer and Ilya Sorokin are scheduled to start in goal. St. Louis got going in the second period with an Alexey Toropchenko goal, his eleventh of the season, guided in by Jake Neighbours. The Blues added on with a Jordan Kyrou goal, his twentieth of the year, made possible by Brandon Saad and Marco Scandella. New York got on the board with a Kyle Palmieri goal, his nineteenth of the season, assisted by Adam Pelech and Noah Dobson. The Islanders tied it on a Jean-Gabriel Pageau goal, his eighth of the year, fueled by Palmieri and Sebastian Aho. New York pulled ahead on a Bo Horvat goal in the third period, his twenty-fourth of the season, via Brock Nelson and Pelech. The Islanders iced it at 4-2 with a Mathew Barzal empty net goal, his nineteenth of the year, set up by Nelson and Alexander Romanov. The three stars were Palmieri, Pelech, and Nelson. 

Down in Nashville, the Predators welcome the Montreal Canadiens. Jake Allen and Juuse Saros are in the blue paint. Nashville began in the first period with a Filip Forsberg goal, his thirtieth of the season, coming off of Luke Evangelista and Ryan O'Reilly. The Predators added on with a Gustav Nyquist goal in the second period, his seventeenth of the year, assisted by Forsberg and O'Reilly. Montreal got on the board with a Brendan Gallagher goal, his tenth of the season, via Jake Evans and Josh Anderson. The Canadiens tied it on a David Savard goal, his fifth of the year, courtesy of Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. Nashville took the lead with an O'Reilly goal, his twenty-third of the season, fueled by Nyquist and Jeremy Lauzon. Montreal tied it on a Joshua Roy goal, his second of the year, going in unassisted. The Canadiens won 4-3 in overtime on a Suzuki goal, his twenty-fifth of the season, guided in by Caufield. The three stars were Suzuki, O'Reilly, and Forsberg, while Caufield and Nyquist get the honorable mentions.

Up in Winnipeg, the Jets bring in the Seattle Kraken. Joey Daccord and Connor Hellebuyck tend the twines. Seattle led off in the first period with a Justin Schultz goal, his sixth of the season, via Oliver Bjorkstrand and Jared McCann. Winnipeg tied it in the second period with a Kyle Connor goal, his twenty-sixth of the year, passed from Mark Scheifele and Vladislav Namestnikov. The Kraken retook the lead with a McCann shorthanded goal, his twenty-seventh of the season, set up by Yanni Gourde and Jamie Oleksiak. The Jets retied it on an Adam Lowry goal, his ninth of the year, helped along by Mason Appleton and Dylan Samberg. Winnipeg pulled ahead in the third period with a Nino Niederreiter goal, his eighteenth of the season, assisted by Appleton and Lowry. Seattle retied it on a Tomas Tatar goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Matty Beniers and Jordan Eberle. The Kraken pulled ahead with an Andre Burakovsky power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Ryker Evans and McCann. This stood for a 4-3 win, with the three stars going to McCann, Lowry, and Appleton.

Back south, the Arizona Coyotes host the Chicago Blackhawks. Arvid Soderblom and Connor Ingram receive the starts in goal. Chicago struck first in the first period with a Seth Jones power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Connor Bedard and Tyler Johnson. Arizona tied it on a Nick Bjugstad goal, his fourteenth of the year, fueled by Matt Dumba. The Blackhawks retook the lead with a Nick Foligno power play goal, his fifteenth of the season, with assists provided by Bedard and Johnson. The Coyotes tied it on a Michael Carcone goal, his seventeenth of the year, going in unassisted. Chicago retook the lead with a Jason Dickinson power play goal, his eighteenth of the season, with helpers from Kevin Korchinski and Alex Vlasic. The Blackhawks added on with a Philipp Kurashev power play goal, his eleventh of the year, passed from Foligno and Johnson. Chicago iced it at 5-2 with a Jones empty net goal, his second of the game and third of the campaign, set up by Dickinson. The three stars were Jones, Dickinson, and Johnson, while Bedard and Foligno get the honorable mentions.

In California, the Los Angeles Kings welcome the Vancouver Canucks. Thatcher Demko and Cam Talbot guard the cages. Los Angeles kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Trevor Moore goal, his twenty-fourth of the season, via Phillip Danault. Vancouver tied it on an Elias Pettersson goal in the second period, his thirtieth of the year, assisted by Nils Hoglander and Quinn Hughes. The Canucks won 2-1 in overtime with a J.T. Miller goal, his thirty-first of the campaign, made possible by Brock Boeser and Hughes. The three stars were Demko (23 for 24 in saves), Hughes, and Miller.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks bring in the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger and Kaapo Kahkonen patrol the creases. San Jose was first to score in the first period with an Anthony Duclair power play goal, his fifteenth of the season, powered by Fabian Zetterlund and William Eklund. The Sharks added on with a Zetterlund goal, his sixteenth of the year, via Duclair and Jan Rutta. Dallas got on the board with a Jamie Benn power play goal, his tenth of the season, with assists provided by Miro Heiskanen and Jason Robertson. The Stars tied it on a Logan Stankoven power play goal, his fourth of the year, passed from Heiskanen and Wyatt Johnston. San Jose took the lead back in the second period with a Ryan Carpenter goal, his fourth of the season, guided in by Nico Sturm and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. Dallas tied it again with a Johnston goal, his twentieth of the year, fueled by Benn and Ty Dellandrea. The Sharks retook the lead with another Duclair goal, his second of the game and sixteenth of the season, helped along by Zetterlund and Mikael Granlund. San Jose extended the lead as Filip Zadina scored his tenth of the year, thanks to Mike Hoffman and Calen Addison. The Sharks padded the lead on a Granlund goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Duclair. The Stars got one back on Stankoven's second goal of the game and fifth of the year, coming off of Johnston. Dallas pulled closer on a Johnston goal, his second of the game and twenty-first of the season, courtesy of Stankoven and Benn. The Stars tied it as Johnston completed his hat trick on his twenty-second of the year, with the help of Heiskanen and Benn. Dallas won 7-6 in overtime with a Roope Hintz goal, his twenty-fifth of the campaign, with helpers from Stankoven and Heiskanen. The three stars were Johnston, Stankoven, and Heiskanen, while Benn, Duclair, Zetterlund and Granlund get the honorable mentions.
