NHL 2016/17 - Day 39

Five games are on the schedule for today. We begin with a matinee in...

DC, as the Washington Capitals host the Columbus Blue Jackets. Sergei Bobrovsky and Braden Holtby guard the cages. Washington started in the first period with a Nicklas Backstrom goal, his fifth of the season, going in unassisted. Columbus tied it on a Nick Foligno power play goal in the second period, his seventh of the year, powered by Alexander Wennberg and Zach Werenski. The Capitals retook the lead on an Alex Ovechkin power play goal, his ninth of the season, via Backstrom and Matt Niskanen. The Blue Jackets tied it on a Brandon Dubinsky goal in the third period, his second of the year, coming off of Cam Atkinson and Brandon Saad. Columbus took the lead with a Wennberg power play goal, his third of the campaign, made possible by Foligno and Sam Gagner. This made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars going to Wennberg, Foligno, and Backstrom.

Down in Raleigh, the Carolina Hurricanes welcome the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Cam Ward are the goalies. Carolina led off in the first period with an Elias Lindholm goal, passed from Ron Hainsey. The Hurricanes added on in the third period with a Victor Rask goal, his eighth of the season, a power play goal powered by Lee Stempniak and Jeff Skinner. Winnipeg got on the board with a Mark Scheifele goal, his eleventh of the year, guided in by Nikolaj Ehlers and Josh Morrissey. Carolina iced it at 3-1 with a Noah Hanifin power play goal, with assists provided by Justin Faulk and Teuvo Teravainen. The three stars went to Ward (28 for 29 in saves), Rask, and Hanifin.

Back up north, the New York Rangers host the Florida Panthers. James Reimer is mismatched with Henrik Lundqvist in goal. New York began in the first period with a Chris Kreider goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Derek Stepan and Marc Staal. Florida tied it in the second period on a Keith Yandle power play goal, powered by Vincent Trocheck and Aleksander Barkov. The Rangers retook the lead on a Mika Zibanejad goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Mats Zuccarello and Jimmy Vesey in the third period. The Panthers retied it on an Aaron Ekblad goal, his fifth of the campaign, via Jakub Kindl and Trocheck. In the shootout, Trocheck and Barkov scored for Florida for a 3-2 win. The three stars went to Trocheck, Barkov, and Ekblad.

Over to Detroit, where the Red Wings bring in the Calgary Flames. Chad Johnson and Jimmy Howard are in the creases. Detroit struck first in the first period with a Tomas Tatar goal, his third of the season, fueled by Justin Abdelkader and Alexey Marchenko. Calgary tied it on a Garnet Hathaway goal in the second period, helped along by Dougie Hamilton and Micheal Ferland. The Flames took the lead in the third period with a Matt Stajan goal, made possible by Hamilton and Hunter Shinkaruk. The Red Wings retied it on an Anthony Mantha goal, passed from Henrik Zetterberg and Gustav Nyquist. Calgary pulled ahead on a Mikael Backlund goal, his second of the year, via Michael Frolik and Hamilton, the latter earning a sock trick. This stood for a 3-2 win, with the three stars being Hamilton, Hathaway, and Backlund.

Finally, the Anaheim Ducks host their rivals, the Los Angeles Kings. Peter Budaj and John Gibson man the nets. Los Angeles dented the scoreboard in the second period on a Drew Doughty goal, his third of the season, coming off of Jeff Carter. The Kings added on with a Carter power play goal, his eighth of the year, powered by Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli. Los Angeles extended the lead on another Carter power play goal, his second of the game and ninth of the season, with the help of Doughty and Alec Martinez. Anaheim got on the board in the third period with an Antoine Vermette goal, his fourth of the year, passed from Hampus Lindholm. The Ducks got closer with a Rickard Rakell power play goal, his sixth of the campaign, assisted by Jakob Silfverberg and Lindholm. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars going to Carter, Doughty, and Lindholm.

KHL 2016/17 - Day 85

Just two games today, beginning with...

Vityaz Podolsk hosting Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. Alexei Murygin and Harri Sateri are the goalies. Yaroslavl opened in the first period with a Maxime Talbot power play goal, powered by Petri Kontiola and Brandon Kozun. Podolsk tied it in the second period on a Miro Aaltonen goal, via Jakub Jerabek on the power play. Vityaz took the lead with an Alexei Kopeikin goal, assisted by Jerabek and Mario Kempe in the third period. The final held at 2-1, with the three stars going to Kopeikin, Sateri (43 for 44 in saves), and Jerabek.

The other game has Ak Bars Kazan hosting Lada Togliatti. Ilya Ezhov and Stanislav Galimov draw the starts in goal. Togliatti got going in the second period with a Vasily Streltsov goal, assisted by Kristaps Sotnieks and Alexander Streltsov. Kazan tied it with a Mikhail Varnakov goal, made possible by Dmitry Obukhov. Ak Bars added on with a Mikhail Glukhov goal, helped along by Anton Glinkin. Kazan added on with a Vasily Tokranov goal, passed from Alexander Svitov and Jiri Sekac. Ak Bars extended the lead in the third period as Obukhov scored, thanks to Atte Ohtamaa and Varnakov. Lada got one back with a Viktor Komarov goal, coming off of Anton Krysanov and Taylor Aronson. Togliatti pulled closer on a Denis Zernov goal, guided in by Sotnieks and Anton Shenfeld. Kazan iced it at 5-3 with an unassisted Glinkin empty net goal. The three stars were Obukhov, Varnakov, and Sotnieks, while Glinkin gets an honorable mention.

NHL 2016/17 - Day 38

There's eleven games on for today, including a pair of matinees. The first is in...

Philadelphia, as the Flyers host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Steve Mason are the goalies. Tampa Bay started in the first period with a Tyler Johnson power play goal, his sixth of the season, powered by Alex Killorn and Valtteri Filppula. The Lightning added on in the second period with an Ondrej Palat goal, his third of the year, coming off of Vladislav Namestnikov. Tampa Bay extended the lead in the third period as Jonathan Drouin scored his third of the campaign, thanks to Palat. This made it 3-0, the final, with the three stars going to Palat, Vasilevskiy (32 save shutout), and Johnson.

Out in California, the Los Angeles Kings welcome the New Jersey Devils. Cory Schneider and Peter Budaj are in goal. New Jersey opened in the first period with a John Moore goal, his third of the season, assisted by Reid Boucher and Devante Smith-Pelly. Los Angeles tied it in the second period with an Alec Martinez goal, his third of the year, courtesy of Nic Dowd and Devin Setoguchi. The Kings took the lead with a Tanner Pearson goal, his seventh of the campaign, going in unassisted. Los Angeles added on with a Jeff Carter goal in the third period, his seventh of the season, via Tyler Toffoli and Drew Doughty. The Devils got one back with a Nick Lappin goal, his third of the year, coming off of P.A. Parenteau and Beau Bennett. The Kings iced it at 4-2 with an empty net goal by Jake Muzzin, his second of the campaign, set up by Dwight King. The three stars went to Carter, Pearson, and Martinez.

At the normal time, the Boston Bruins bring in the Winnipeg Jets. Michael Hutchinson and Tuukka Rask are set to start in goal. Boston got going in the second period with a Matt Beleskey goal, his second of the season, via Joe Morrow and Dominic Moore. The Bruins added on with a Brad Marchand goal, his sixth of the year, courtesy of Zdeno Chara. Boston extended the lead as Patrice Bergeron scored a power play goal, his third of the season, powered by David Krejci and Chara. The Bruins padded the lead in the third period on a Tim Schaller goal, his third of the year, passed from Torey Krug and Austin Czarnik. Winnipeg got on the board with an Adam Lowry goal, his fifth of the campaign, assisted by Patrik Laine and Toby Enstrom. The game ended with this 4-1 score, and the three stars went to Chara, Marchand, and Bergeron.

Along to Buffalo, where the Sabres host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury and Anders Nilsson are in the blue paint. Buffalo led off in the first period with a William Carrier goal, coming off of Taylor Fedun. Pittsburgh tied it in the third period with a Sidney Crosby power play goal, his twelfth of the campaign, powered by Chris Kunitz and Evgeni Malkin. The tie went to a shootout, where Cal O'Reilly gave the Sabres a 2-1 win with his lone tally. The three stars were given to Nilsson (46 for 47 in saves), Carrier, and Fleury (32 for 33 in saves).

South to Dallas, where the Stars welcome the Edmonton Oilers. Cam Talbot and Kari Lehtonen are given the starting nods. Edmonton began in the first period with a Connor McDavid goal, his sixth of the season, going in unassisted. The Oilers added on with a Tyler Pitlick goal, his sixth of the year, passed from Drake Caggiula and Matt Hendricks. Edmonton extended the lead as Oscar Klefbom scored in the second period, his second of the season, with the help of Anton Slepyshev and Leon Draisaitl. The Oilers chased Lehtonen in favor of Antti Niemi with a McDavid goal, his second of the game and seventh of the year, guided in by Jesse Puljujarvi and Matthew Benning. Dallas got on the board with a Patrick Eaves unassisted power play goal, his ninth of the season. The Stars got closer with a Jamie Benn power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by John Klingberg and Jason Spezza. Edmonton shot back in the third period when McDavid finished his hat trick on his eighth of the campaign, fueled by Puljujarvi and Slepyshev. North to Canada, where the Montreal Canadiens bring in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen and Carey Price are between the pipes. The Canadiens added on in the second period with an Alex Galchenyuk power play goal, his seventh of the year, powered by Radulov and Weber. Toronto got on the board with a William Nylander power play goal, his sixth of the campaign, via Leo Komarov and Auston Matthews. Over in Ontario, the Ottawa Senators host the Florida Panthers. Roberto Luongo and Craig Anderson guard the cages. Ten games are on today for the last big day for awhile. We begin in the Far East with...

Amur Khabarovsk hosting Metallurg Novokuznetsk. Andrei Kareyev and Juha Metsola are the goalies. Khabarovsk got going in the second period with an Alexei Byvaltsev goal, via Jan Kolar. Amur iced it at 2-0 with a Tomas Zohorna empty net goal, set up by Kristian Kuusela and Maxim Kondratyev. The three stars went to Metsola (20 save shutout), Byvaltsev, and Kareyev (39 for 40 in saves).

Down to Vladivostok, where Admiral welcomes Avangard Omsk. Dominik Furch and Igor Bobkov are in goal. Vladivostok dented the scoreboard in the second period with a James Wright power play goal, powered by James Wisniewski and Robert Sabolic. Omsk tied it on a Nikolai Lemtyugov goal, assisted by Vladimir Sobotka and Evgeny Medvedev on the power play. Avangard took the lead in the third period on an Alexander Perezhogin goal, guided in by Sobotka and Pyotr Khokhryakov. This made it 2-1, the final, with the three stars being Sobotka, Furch (23 for 24 in saves), and Perezhogin.

In China, Kunlun Red Star Beijing brings in Sibir Novosibirsk. Danny Taylor and Andrei Makarov man the nets. South to Sochi, where the Leopards welcome Salavat Yulaev Ufa. Niklas Svedberg and Konstantin Barulin guard the cages. Ufa led off in the first period with a Maxim Mayorov goal, guided in by Maxim Goncharov. Sochi tied it in the second period with a Sergei Kuznetsov goal, helped along by Eric O'Dell. Salavat Yulaev took the lead back with a Linus Omark power play goal, powered by Teemu Hartikainen and Kirill Kaprizov. The Leopards retied it in the third period with an Alexander Mereskin goal, passed from Pavel Padakin. Sochi took the lead with a Ben Maxwell goal, via Oscar Fantenberg and Yegor Morozov. Ufa tied it on an Enver Lisin goal, coming off of Hartikainen and Omark. In the shootout, Morozov and Mayorov cancelled out, and Maxwell had the decisive goal to give the Leopards a 4-3 win. In Moscow, CSKA brings in Barys Astana. Henrik Karlsson and Ilya Sorokin tend the twines. Moscow began in the first period with a Kirill Petrov power play goal, powered by Denis Denisov. CSKA added on in the second period with a Greg Scott goal, via Andrei Yermakov and Vladimir Zharkov. Astana got on the board with a Martin St. Pierre power play goal, coming off of Nigel Dawes and Brandon Bochenski. Moscow replied with another Scott goal in the third period, assisted by Semyon Koshelev. CSKA extended the lead as Vyacheslav Osnovin scored an unassisted empty net goal. Barys got one back with a Vladimir Markelov goal, helped along by Roman Savchenko and Maxim Khudyakov. The final held at 4-2, with the three stars being Scott, Petrov, and Osnovin.

Out to Nizhny Novgorod, where Torpedo welcomes Traktor Chelyabinsk. Pavel Francouz and Ilya Proskuryakov are the masked men. Nizhny Novgorod drew first blood in the second period with an Artyom Alyayev power play goal, powered by Kaspars Daugavins and Maxim Osipov. Chelyabinsk tied it with a Maxim Yakutsenya goal in the third period, fueled by Alexander Chernikov. Torpedo took the lead back with a Vladimir Galuzin goal, helped along by Evgeny Grachyov. Nizhny Novgorod added on with an Alexei Potapov goal, guided in by John Norman and Osipov. Torpedo iced it at 4-1 with a shorthanded and unassisted Dmitry Semin goal into an empty net. The three stars were Osipov, Proskuryakov (24 for 25 in saves), and Galuzin.

In Slovakia, Slovan Bratislava brings in Dinamo Minsk. Ben Scrivens and Barry Brust are between the pipes. Minsk struck first in the first period with a Matt Ellison goal, assisted by Dmitry Ambrozheichik and Sergei Drozd. Bratislava tied it on a Kyle Chipchura goal, passed from Andrej Meszaros and Filip Novak. Dinamo took the lead back in the second period with an Andrei Stepanov power play goal, powered by Ellison and Alexander Materukhin. The game ended at 2-1, with the three stars going to Ellison, Scrivens (30 for 31 in saves), and Stepanov.

Finally, Medvescak Zagreb hosts Dinamo Riga. Janis Kalnins and Michael Garnett are in the blue paint. Zagreb was first to score in the first period with an Edwin Hedberg goal, fueled by Francis Pare and Bobby Butler. This lasted the whole game for a 1-0 Medvescak win, with the three stars awarded to Garnett (26 save shutout), Hedberg, and Kalnins (20 for 21 in saves).

Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk hosts Lada Togliatti. Edgars Masalskis and Ville Kolppanen man the nets. Nizhnekamsk led off in the first period with a Richard Gynge power play goal, powered by Gilbert Brule and Dan Sexton. Togliatti tied it with a Nikita Filatov goal, helped along by Andrei Ivanov. Neftekhimik took the lead back in the second period on an Igor Polygalov power play goal, via Yegor Milovzorov and Dmitry Ogurtsov. Nizhnekamsk added on with a Sexton goal, with a lone assist by Geoffrey Kinrade. Neftekhimik extended the lead as Sergei Konkov scored, thanks to Gynge and Brule. Nizhnekamsk padded the lead with a Brule power play goal in the third period, with helpers from Kinrade and Gynge. Lada got one back with a Kristaps Sotnieks goal, assisted by Anton Shenfeld and Filatov. NHL 2016/17 - Day 36

There's ten games on tonight, beginning with...

The Buffalo Sabres hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ben Bishop and Robin Lehner are the goalies. Tampa Bay led off in the first period with a Nikita Nesterov goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Valtteri Filppula and Jonathan Drouin. The Lightning added on in the second period with an Alex Killorn power play goal, his seventh of the year, powered by Filppula and Brayden Point. Buffalo got on the board with a Cody Franson goal, helped along by Evander Kane and Taylor Fedun on the power play. Tampa Bay replied with a Nikita Kucherov goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Killorn. The Lightning iced it at 4-1 with a Point power play goal, his second of the year, made possible by Tyler Johnson. Florida got on the board with an Aaron Ekblad goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Jared McCann and Denis Malgin. St. Louis tied it on a Jaden Schwartz goal, his fifth of the year, assisted by Alex Pietrangelo. The Blues took the lead in the second period on a Schwartz goal, his second of the game and sixth of the season, going in unassisted. The Sharks retied it on a Kevin Leblanc goal, passed from Joe Thornton and Justin Brain. Khabarovsk, as Amur hosts Avangard Omsk. Oleg Shilin and Ilya Andryukhov are the backups in goal. Omsk got going in the second period with a Nikolai Lemtyugov goal, assisted by Yegor Martynov. Avangard added on with an Alexander Osipov goal, passed from Vladimir Sobotka and Alexander Perezhogin. Omsk iced it at 3-0 with a Maxim Pestushko empty net goal in the third period, set up by Erik Gustafsson and Perezhogin. The three stars went to Shilin (29 save shutout), Perezhogin, and Lemtyugov.

Down in Vladivostok, Admiral welcomes Sibir Novosibirsk. Danny Taylor and Igor Bobkov man the nets.
