2019 NHL Eastern Conference Finals

With four teams left in the hunt, we're switching the content coverage to be series posts. In the Eastern Conference Finals, the Boston Bruins meet the Carolina Hurricanes.

Game 1: TD Garden, Boston, Massachusetts. In goal: Tuukka Rask for the Bruins and Petr Mrazek for the Hurricanes. Boston led off in the first period with a Steven Kampfer goal, assisted by Marcus Johansson. Carolina tied it on a Sebastian Aho power play goal, his fifth of the postseason, powered by Andrei Svechnikov and Jordan Staal. The Hurricanes took the lead in the second period with a Greg McKegg goal, his second of the playoffs, guided in by Jordan Martinook and Micheal Ferland. The Bruins retied it in the third period on a Johansson power play goal, his third of the postseason, with assists provided by Brad Marchand and David Krejci. Boston gained the lead on a Patrice Bergeron power play goal, his sixth of the playoffs, guided in by Marchand and Jake DeBrusk. The Bruins extended the lead on a Charlie Coyle empty net goal, his sixth of the postseason, set up by Brandon Carlo and Sean Kuraly. Boston padded the lead with an unassisted Chris Wagner goal. This made it 5-2, the final, with the three stars given to Johansson, Marchand, and Bergeron. The Bruins begin the series ahead 1-0.

Boston extended the lead as Connor Clifton scored in the second period, thanks to Johansson and Danton Heinen. The Bruins padded the lead on a Grzelcyk power play goal, his second of the game and third of the postseason, with assists provided by Coyle and Krug. Boston kept going in the third period with a David Backes goal, his second of the playoffs, fueled by David Krejci and Krug, the latter earning a sock trick. The Bruins continued with a Heinen goal, his second of the postseason, made possible by Patrice Bergeron and Coyle. Carolina got on the board with a Justin Williams goal, his fourth of the playoffs, assisted by Justin Faulk and Sebastian Aho. The Hurricanes got another with a Teuvo Teravainen goal, his seventh of the postseason, going in unassisted. This only made it 6-2, the final, with the three stars being Grzelcyk, Krug, and Coyle, while Johansson and Heinen get the honorable mentions. The Bruins took care of business and will travel with a 2-0 series lead.

Game 3: PNC Arena, Raleigh, North Carolina. In goal: Curtis McElhinney for the Hurricanes and Tuukka Rask for the Bruins. Boston got going in the second period with a Chris Wagner goal, his second of the postseason, via Joakim Nordstrom and Sean Kuraly. The Bruins added on with a Brad Marchand power play goal, his sixth of the playoffs, powered by David Krejci and Charlie McAvoy. Carolina got on the board with a Calvin de Haan goal, passed from Justin Faulk and Sebastian Aho. This only made it 2-1, the final, with the three stars awarded to Rask (35 for 36 in saves), Marchand, and Wagner. The Bruins lead the series 3-0, just one victory away from a place in the Stanley Cup Finals. 

Game 4: PNC Arena, Raleigh, North Carolina. In goal: Curtis McElhinney for the Hurricanes and Tuukka Rask for the Bruins. Boston dented the scoreboard in the second period with a David Pastrnak power play goal, his seventh of the postseason, powered by Brad Marchand and Torey Krug. The Bruins added on with a Patrice Bergeron power play goal, his seventh of the playoffs, with a lone assist by Pastrnak. Boston extended the lead as Bergeron scored again in the third period, his second of the game and eighth of the postseason coming with the help of Pastrnak. The Bruins iced it at 4-0 with a Marchand empty net goal, his seventh of the playoffs, set up by Bergeron and David Krejci. The three stars were awarded to Bergeron, Pastrnak, and Rask (24 save shutout), while Marchand took an honorable mention. The Bruins swept the series 4-0 to earn their spot in the Stanley Cup Finals.

MLS 2019 - Week 11

A new week of games begins on Friday with...

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC hosting the Portland Timbers. Steve Clark and Maxime Crepeau are in goal. Vancouver began in the 9th minute with a Fredy Montero goal, assisted by Russell Teibert. Portland saw a yellow card for a Sebastian Blanco foul in the 28th minute. The Timbers' Cristhian Paredes took a yellow card for his 48th minute foul. Erik Godoy of the Whitecaps received a yellow card in the 61st minute for his foul. Portland's Diego Chara was booked for a foul in the 90th minute. The final held at 1-0, with the man of the match being Crepeau for his five-save clean sheet.

On Saturday, FC Cincinnati welcomes the Montreal Impact. Evan Bush and Spencer Richey are set to start in goal. Cincinnati led off in the 7th minute with an Allan Cruz goal, via Darren Mattocks. Micheal Azira of Montreal took a yellow card for a 47th minute foul. The Orange and Blue added on in the 62nd minute with a Fatai Alashe goal, set up by Rolan Lamah and Leonardo Bertone. The Impact got on the board with an Orji Okwonkwo goal, assisted by Maximiliano Urruti. Bacary Sagna of Montreal picked up a yellow card for an 87th minute foul. The final stayed at 2-1, with Cruz as the man of the match.

Down in Texas, FC Dallas brings in the New York Red Bulls. Ryan Meara and Jose Luis Gonzalez play in goal. New York started in the 12th minute with a Cristian Casseres Jr goal, courtesy of Andreas Ivan. Kyle Duncan of the Red Bulls had a yellow card for a foul in first half stoppage time, leading to Dallas tying the game on a Jesus Ferreira goal, via Jacori Hayes. New York reclaimed the lead with a Sean Nealis goal in the 58th minute, assisted by Michael Murillo. The Red Bulls added on with a Brian White goal in the 85th minute, helped along by Omir Fernandez. This led to the 3-1 final score, with Nealis picked as man of the match.

Way north to Canada, as Toronto FC hosts the Philadelphia Union. Carlos and Quentin Westberg are the goalies. Philadelphia got a gift at the start with an own goal by Toronto's Chris Mavinga in the 25th minute. Alejandro Bedoya of the Union took a yellow card for time wasting in the 32nd minute. The Reds tied it in the 51st minute with an Alejandro Pozuelo goal. Laurent Ciman of Toronto took a yellow card for a 61st minute foul. Philadelphia reclaimed the lead with a Jamiro Monteiro goal, set up by Kacper Przybylko in the 68th minute. Jozy Altidore of the Reds picked up a yellow card for dissent in the 82nd minute. Auston Trusty of the Union had an 86th minute yellow card for a foul. In stoppage time, Przybylko of Philadelphia and Pozuelo of Toronto each received yellow cards. The game ended 2-1 Union, with Monteiro tabbed as man of the match.

Out in California, the Los Angeles Galaxy welcome New York City FC. Sean Johnson and David Bingham are the gloved men. New York City opened in the 44th minute with a Heber goal. In first half stoppage time, Maximiliano Moralez doubled the Pigeons' lead with a penalty kick goal. Los Angeles saw yellow cards for fouls by Servando Carrasco in the 79th minute and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 87th minute. Johnson, the New York City keeper, had a yellow card for his 87th minute foul as well. Joe Corona of the Galaxy picked up a yellow card for persistent infringement in the 90th minute. The game ended 2-0, with Heber as the man of the match.

Back east to Columbus, as the Crew SC bring in Los Angeles FC. Tyler Miller and Joe Bendik draw the starts in goal. Wil Trapp of Columbus picked up a yellow card for a 27th minute foul. In the 28th minute, Walker Zimmerman of Los Angeles had a yellow card for his foul. The Black and Gold drew first blood in the 37th minute with a Mark-Anthony Kaye goal, courtesy of Latif Blessing and Carlos Vela. David Guzman of the Crew took a yellow card in the 43rd minute for a foul. Pedro Santos of Columbus had a yellow card for his 54th minute foul. Los Angeles added on in the 88th minute with an Adama Diomande goal. The Black and Gold iced it at 3-0 with a Vela goal in the 90th minute. The man of the match was Vela.

Further east, the New England Revolution host the San Jose Earthquakes. Daniel Vega and Matt Turner are the lesser-known keepers. New England struck first in the 18th minute with a Juan Agudelo goal, via Edgar Castillo and Cristian Penilla. San Jose's Harold Cummings took a yellow card for a 25th minute foul. The Revolution added on in the 29th minute with a Penilla penalty kick goal. New England extended the lead in the 68th minute as Carles Gil scored, thanks to Tajon Buchanan. The Earthquakes got on the board in the 88th minute with a Valeri Qazaishvili goal, set up by Danny Hoesen. Revolution keeper Turner took a yellow card for a foul in stoppage time. The final stood at 3-1, with the man of the match being Penilla.

Backtracking to Chicago, where the Fire welcome Minnesota United FC. Vito Mannone and David Ousted are between the sticks. Chicago was first to score in the 21st minute with a Nicolas Gaitan goal, set up by Przemyslaw Frankowski. The Fire added on with an Aleksandar Katai goal in the 34th minute, coming off of Johan Kappelhof. Romain Metanire of Minnesota took a yellow card for a handball in the 42nd minute. Chicago's Bastian Schweinsteiger had a yellow card for a 77th minute foul. The Loons' Angelo Rodriguez received a yellow card for persistent infringement in the 78th minute. Minnesota saw yellow cards for dissent by Abu Danladi and a foul by Darwin Quintero in stoppage time. The final remained at 2-0, with Gaitan being the man of the match.

Westward to Colorado, as the Rapids bring in Real Salt Lake for the Rocky Mountain Derby. Andrew Putna is mismatched with Tim Howard in goal. Salt Lake kicked off the scoring in the 25th minute with an Albert Rusnak penalty kick goal. Real added on with a Corey Baird goal in the 27th minute, via Nick Besler. Colorado's Danny Wilson had a yellow card for a 32nd minute foul. In the 33rd minute, Salt Lake's Justen Glad received a yellow for a foul. Colorado got on the board in first half stoppage time with a Kellyn Acosta goal. The Rapids tied it in the 47th minute with a Wilson goal. Real retook the lead in the 53rd minute on a Johnson goal. Sebastian Anderson of the Rapids had a yellow card for his 64th minute foul. Salt Lake saw Damir Kreilach receive a yellow card in the 76th minute for a foul. The game ended 3-2 for Real, with Johnson as the man of the match.

Saturday ends in Seattle, as the Sounders FC host the Houston Dynamo. Joe Willis and Stefan Frei protect the twines. Seattle cracked the scoresheet in the 5th minute with a Cristian Roldan goal. Houston's Darwin Ceren took a yellow card for a 28th minute foul. In the 59th minute, A.J. DeLaGarza of the Dynamo had a yellow card for persistent infringement. The Sounders' Will Bruin took a yellow card for his 78th minute foul. In stoppage time, Alejandro Fuenmayor of Houston picked up a yellow card for a handball. The final stayed at 1-0, with Roldan picked as man of the match.

On Sunday, Atlanta United FC welcomes Orlando City SC. Brian Rowe and Brad Guzan patrol the penalty areas. Atlanta got going in the 14th minute on a Gonzalo Martinez goal, via Hector Villalba. Michael Parkhurst of the Five Stripes had a yellow card for a 65th minute foul. Orlando City's Robin Jansson took a yellow card for his foul in the 90th minute foul. The final was 1-0, with Martinez taking man of the match honors.

Finally, DC United brings in Sporting Kansas City. Tim Melia and Bill Hamid are the strong keepers. Daniel Salloi of Kansas City took a yellow card for his 11th minute foul. In the 45th minute, DC's Frederic Brillant had a yellow card for a foul. The Black and Red dented the scoreboard on a Paul Arriola goal in the 78th minute, courtesy of Wayne Rooney. This led to the 1-0 final score, with the man of the match being Arriola.

NWSL 2019 - Week 5

Four games are on this weekend, beginning with...

Sky Blue FC hosting the Washington Spirit. Aubrey Bledsoe and DiDi Haracic are in goal. Washington began in the 22nd minute with a Cheyna Matthews goal. In the 27th minute, the Spirit's Meggie Dougherty Howard took a yellow card for a foul. Sky Blue tied it in the 32nd minute with a Raquel Rodriguez goal, assisted by Savannah McCaskill. In the 54th minute, Washington's Paige Nielsen received a yellow card for her professional foul. The Spirit retook the lead in the 55th minute with a Jordan DiBiasi goal, via Amy Harrison and Chloe Logarzo. Washington added on in the 68th minute with another Matthews goal, coming off of Cali Farquharson and DiBiasi. Sky Blue pulled one back with an Imani Dorsey goal in the 80th minute, helped along by Amandine Pierre-Louis. The final remained 3-2 in favor of the Spirit, with Matthews' brace making her the woman of the match.

West to Utah, as Royals FC welcomes the Houston Dash. Jane Campbell and Nicole Barnhart are the gloved women. Utah led off in the 29th minute with an Amy Rodriguez goal, set up by Vero Boquete. Houston tied it in the 42nd minute with a Rachel Daly goal. Samantha Johnson of the Royal had a yellow card for a 44th minute foul. The Dash pulled ahead in the 50th minute with a Daly goal, courtesy of Ari Romero. Utah's Rachel Corsie picked up a yellow card for a 69th minute foul. Houston's Haley Hanson received a yellow card for a 72nd minute foul, as did teammate Christine Nairn in the 83rd minute. In the 90th minute, Daly of the Dash received a straight red card for violent conduct against Meghan Cox, putting the visitors at ten women. The final stayed at 2-1, with Daly picked as woman of the match.

Back east, the Orlando Pride bring in the Portland Thorns FC. Britt Eckerstrom and Haley Kopmeyer are the backups in goal. Orlando started in the 10th minute with a Toni Pressley goal, via Carson Pickett. Portland tied it in the 28th minute with a Dagny Brynjarsdottir goal. Rachel Hill of the Pride took a yellow card for a 35th minute foul. The Thorns took the lead with an Andressinha goal in the 36th minute. Portland added on with a Caitlin Foord goal in the 57th minute. Celeste Boureille of the Thorns received a yellow card for her 61st minute foul. In the 74th minute, Orlando's Pickett picked up a yellow card for a foul. The game ended 3-1, with Andressihna as the woman of the match.

On Sunday, the Chicago Red Stars host the North Carolina Courage. Katelyn Rowland and Emily Boyd draw the starts in goal. Chicago opened in the 13th minute with a Sam Kerr goal, via Yuki Nagasato. North Carolina tied it on a Lynn Williams goal in the 33rd minute, courtesy of Merritt Mathias. The Red Stars reclaimed the lead on a Michele Vasconcelos goal in the 40th minute, passed from Kerr. Nikki Stanton of Chicago had a yellow card for a 72nd minute foul. The Courage's Leah Pruitt took a yellow card in the 80th minute for a foul. The Red Stars iced it with a Kerr goal in stoppage time, giving them a 3-1 win and giving Kerr woman of the match honors.

2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs - Round 2 Day 14

The last day of the second round is here, with the San Jose Sharks hosting the Colorado Avalanche. Philipp Grubauer and Martin Jones are the goalies. San Jose drew first blood in the first period with a Joe Pavelski goal, his third of the postseason, via Brent Burns and Tomas Hertl. The Sharks added on with a Hertl goal, his ninth of the playoffs, courtesy of Pavelski and Evander Kane. Colorado got on the board with a Mikko Rantanen goal, his sixth of the postseason, assisted by Samuel Girard and Gabriel Landeskog. San Jose replied with a Joonas Donskoi goal, coming off of Burns and Melker Karlsson. The Avalanche got one back in the third period with a Tyson Jost goal, his third of the playoffs, guided in by Colin Wilson and Alexander Kerfoot. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars being Hertl, Pavelski, and Burns. The Sharks won the series 4-3 and will face the St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference finals.

MLS Midweek - May 8, 2019

Four games grace the midweek slate this time, beginning with...

Atlanta United FC hosting Toronto FC. Alex Bono and Brad Guzan are in goal. Atlanta began in the 17th minute on a Hector Villalba goal, set up by Josef Martinez. Richie Laryea of Toronto took a yellow card in the 21st minute. Franco Escobar of the Five Stripes had a yellow card for a 56th minute foul. Atlanta added on with a Julian Gressel goal in the 67th minute, made possible by Martinez. The Reds saw yellow cards for a handball by Eriq Zavaleta in the 74th minute, fouls by Michael Bradley and Terrence Boyd in the 76th and 77th minutes respectively, and a dive by Jonathan Osorio in the 83rd minute. The final stayed at 2-0, with the man of the match being Martinez.

Up in Columbus, the Crew SC welcome the Los Angeles Galaxy. David Bingham and Zack Steffen draw the starts in goal. Columbus led off in the 27th minute with a Gyasi Zardes goal, assisted by Robinho and Federico Higuain. The Crew added on with a Higuain goal in the 53rd minute, courtesy of Zardes. Uriel Antuna of Los Angeles took a yellow card for his 59th minute foul. Jonathan Mensah of Columbus received a yellow card for time wasting in the 61st minute. The Crew extended the lead as Hector Jimenez scored in the 66th minute. Diego Polenta of the Galaxy had a yellow card for a handball in the 80th minute. Los Angeles got on the board with a Daniel Steres goal, via Sebastian Lletget in the 87th minute. This only made it 3-1, with Zardes named man of the match.

Over to Chicago, where the Fire bring in the New England Revolution. Matt Turner and David Ousted protect the nets. Chicago opened in the 28th minute with a Nemanja Nikolic goal, via Nicolas Gaitan. The Fire added on in the 40th minute with a Nikolic goal, set up by Bastian Schweinsteiger and Gaitan. Chicago's Johan Kappelhof took a yellow card for a 55th minute foul. New England saw a yellow card for a 58th minute foul by Luis Caicedo. The Fire extended the lead in the 78th minute as Brandt Bronico scored, thanks to Aleksandar Katai. Chicago padded the lead on a Gaitan goal, helped along by Katai. The Fire kept going with a Przemyslaw Frankowski goal in the 89th minute. This made it 5-0, the final, with the man of the match being Nikolic.

Finally, the New York Red Bulls host the Montreal Impact. Evan Bush and Luis Robles are the gloved men. New York's Amro Tarek had a yellow card for a foul in the 23rd minute. The Red Bulls started in the 36th minute with an Aaron Long goal, assisted by Marc Rzatkowski. Maximiliano Urruti of Montreal had a yellow card for a 51st minute foul. New York saw Tim Parker received a yellow card for his 63rd minute foul. The Impact tied it in the 64th minute with a Zakaria Diallo goal, coming off of Urruti and Omar Browne. In the 73rd minute, Montreal's Samuel Piette took a yellow card for a foul. The Impact pulled ahead in the 79th minute with an Urruti penalty kick goal. The final held from here at 2-1, with Urruti as the man of the match.

2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs - Round 2 Day 13

Just one game tonight, as the St. Louis Blues host the Dallas Stars in a Game 7. Ben Bishop and Jordan Binnington draw the starts in goal. St. Louis led off in the first period with a Vince Dunn goal, passed from Alex Pietrangelo and Robert Thomas. Dallas tied it on a Mats Zuccarello goal, his fourth of the postseason, going in unassisted. The Blues won 2-1 in double overtime with a Pat Maroon goal, his third of the playoffs, guided in by Thomas and Tyler Bozak. The three stars were Thomas, Maroon, and Bishop (52 for 54 in saves). The Blues won the series 4-3 and advance to the Western Conference finals.

2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs - Round 2 Day 12

The last day with a pair of games on sees...

The Columbus Blue Jackets welcoming the Boston Bruins. Tuukka Rask and Sergei Bobrovsky tend the twines. Boston got going in the second period with a David Krejci goal, his fourth of the postseason, coming off of Jake DeBrusk and Connor Clifton. The Bruins added on with a Marcus Johansson goal, his second of the playoffs, via Charlie Coyle and Danton Heinen in the third period. Boston extended the lead as David Backes scored, thanks to Torey Krug and Krejci. This made it 3-0, the final, with the three stars going to Rask (39 save shutout), Krejci, and Johansson. The Bruins won the series 4-2 and will meet the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference finals.

Out west, the Colorado Avalanche bring in the San Jose Sharks. Martin Jones and Philipp Grubauer are in the creases. Colorado dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Tyson Jost goal, his second of the postseason, courtesy of J.T. Compher. San Jose tied it on a Marc-Edouard Vlasic goal, his second of the playoffs, guided in by Timo Meier and Gustav Nyquist. The Avalanche retook the lead with a Compher goal, his third of the postseason, assisted by Carl Soderberg and Alexander Kerfoot. The Sharks tied it again on a Brent Burns goal, his fifth of the playoffs, with a lone helper by Erik Karlsson. Colorado regained the lead on a Compher goal in the third period, his second of the game and fourth of the postseason, helped along by Derick Brassard and Colin Wilson. San Jose retied it with a Vlasic goal, his second of the game and third of the playoffs, fueled by Logan Couture and Nyquist. The Avalanche won 4-3 in overtime with a Gabriel Landeskog goal, his third of the postseason, made possible by Cale Makar. The three stars went to Compher, Landeskog, and Vlasic, while Nyquist gets an honorable mention. The series heads back to San Jose one more time, tied at 3 games apiece.
