NHL 2021-22 - Day 97

It's a busier Monday with seven games on, beginning with...

The New York Rangers hosting the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Quick and Igor Shesterkin man the nets. New York opened in the first period with a Chris Kreider power play goal, his thirtieth of the season, powered by Adam Fox and Artemi Panarin. Los Angeles tied it in the second period with a Blake Lizotte goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Mikey Anderson and Trevor Moore. The Kings took the lead with an Alex Iafallo power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, with assists provided by Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe. The Rangers retied it in the third period with a Barclay Goodrow goal, his eighth of the year, passed from Panarin and Ryan Strome. The tie went to a shootout, where the Rangers got a 3-2 with tallies by Panarin, Alexis Lafreniere and Fox, while Kopitar and Quinton Byfield tallied for the Kings. The three stars were Panarin, Fox, and Shesterkin (34 for 36 in saves). 

Along to DC, as the Washington Capitals welcome the Vegas Golden Knights. Robin Lehner and Vitek Vanecek are the goalies. Vegas got going in the second period with a Michael Amadio goal, his fourth of the season, fueled by Brett Howden. This held for a 1-0 final, with the three stars awarded to Lehner (34 save shutout), Amadio, and Vanecek (28 for 29 in saves). 

Up in Boston, the Bruins bring in the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Tuukka Rask are the veterans in goal. Anaheim started in the first period with a Derek Grant power play goal, his seventh of the season, powered by Ryan Getzlaf and Hampus Lindholm. The Ducks added on in the second period with a shorthanded Isac Lundestrom goal, his ninth of the year, set up by Lindholm. Boston got on the board with a David Pastrnak goal, his twentieth of the season, coming off of Tomas Nosek and Nick Foligno. Anaheim shot back with a Getzlaf goal, his third of the year, guided in by Rickard Rakell and Lindholm. The Bruins got one back with a Taylor Hall power play goal, his ninth of the season, with assists provided by Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. The Ducks fired back with a Troy Terry goal, his twenty-third of the year, helped along by Kevin Shattenkirk and Cam Fowler. Anaheim extended the lead as Greg Pateryn scored, thanks to Zegras and Rakell. Boston pulled back on an Erik Haula goal, his fourth of the campaign, with helpers from Mike Reilly and Pastrnak. This only made it 5-3, the final, with the three stars going to Getzlaf, Lindholm, and Pastrnak, while Rakell gets an honorable mention. 

Over in Philadelphia, the Flyers host the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger and Carter Hart are the young goalies. Dallas led off in the first period with a Roope Hintz goal, his eighteenth of the season, via Jason Robertson. Philadelphia tied it in the second period with an Ivan Provorov goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Travis Konecny and Justin Braun. The Stars retook the lead in the third period with a Jacob Peterson goal, his seventh of the season, assisted by Alexander Radulov and Ryan Suter. Dallas iced it at 3-1 with a Joe Pavelski empty net goal, his seventeenth of the year, set up by Hintz and Esa Lindell. The three stars went to Hintz, Oettinger (27 for 28 in saves), and Peterson. 

Westward to Minnesota, as the Wild welcome the Montreal Canadiens. Cayden Primeau and Cam Talbot are set to start in goal. Montreal began in the first period with a Mike Hoffman goal, his seventh of the season, assisted by Laurent Dauphin and Jeff Petry. Minnesota tied it on a Jared Spurgeon goal, his fourth of the year, courtesy of Alex Goligoski and Jordan Greenway. The Wild took the lead with a Marcus Foligno goal, his seventeenth of the season, coming off of Greenway and Jon Merrill. Minnesota added on in the second period with a Connor Dewar goal, passed from Nico Sturm and Goligoski. The Wild extended the lead as Sturm scored his seventh of the year, thanks to Dewar and Spurgeon. Minnesota padded the lead on a Mats Zuccarello goal, his twelfth of the season, fueled by Kirill Kaprizov. Both Primeau and Talbot exited after the second period, with Michael McNiven and Kaapo Kahkonen drawing into the contest. The Canadiens got one back in the third period with a Rem Pitlick goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Cedric Paquette and Jake Evans. The Wild fired back with a Matt Boldy power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Kaprizov and Zuccarello. Minnesota padded the lead on a Jordie Benn goal, via Sturm and Kevin Fiala. The Wild finished it at 8-2 with a Fiala goal, his eleventh of the year, helped along by Frederick Gaudreau and Boldy. Next up, the Colorado Avalanche bring in the Chicago Blackhawks. Marc-Andre Fleury and Pavel Francouz are the masked men. Colorado dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Nazem Kadri goal, his sixteenth of the season, powered by Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar on the power play. The Avalanche added on with a Mikko Rantanen goal, his twenty-second of the year, assisted by Gabriel Landeskog and Devon Toews. This stood for a 2-0 win, with the three stars awarded to Francouz (24 save shutout), Kadri, and Rantanen.

Finally, the Calgary Flames host the St. Louis Blues. Jordan Binnington and Jacob Markstrom guard the cages. St. Louis kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Tyler Bozak goal, his third of the season, via Oskar Sundqvist and Klim Kostin. Calgary tied it on a Nikita Zadorov goal, his third of the year, coming off of Matthew Tkachuk and Erik Gudbranson. The Flames took the lead with a Christopher Tanev goal, his second of the season, helped along by Johnny Gaudreau. Calgary added on with an Elias Lindholm power play goal, his thirteenth of the year, powered by Gaudreau and Tkachuk. The Flames extended the lead as Sean Monahan scored his seventh of the season on the power play, thanks to Tkachuk and Rasmus Andersson. Calgary padded the lead with a Blake Coleman goal, his eighth of the year, assisted by Mikael Backlund and Trevor Lewis. The Flames kept going with an Adam Ruzicka goal, his second of the season, passed from Tkachuk and Gaudreau. Calgary continued on a Gaudreau goal, his sixteenth of the year, fueled by Tkachuk and Zadorov. The final held at 7-1, with the three stars being Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Zadorov.

NHL 2021-22 - Day 96

Back down to five games on this day. First up...

The Pittsburgh Penguins host the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Tristan Jarry tend the twines. Winnipeg led off in the first period with a Blake Wheeler goal, his second of the season, via Mark Scheifele and Brenden Dillon. The Jets added on in the second period with a Kyle Connor power play goal, his twenty-second of the year, powered by Paul Stastny and Wheeler. Pittsburgh got on the board with a Kasperi Kapanen goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Evgeni Malkin and Danton Heinen. The Penguins tied it on a Jeff Carter goal, his twelfth of the year, going in unassisted. The tie went to a shootout, where Sidney Crosby had the lone tally for a 3-2 Penguins win. The three stars were Wheeler, Carter, and Kapanen. 

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets welcome the Ottawa Senators. Anton Forsberg and Elvis Merzlikins man the nets. Ottawa began in the first period with an Artem Zub goal, his fourth of the season, courtesy of Adam Gaudette and Tyler Ennis. Columbus tied it on a Sean Kuraly goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Jakub Voracek and Zach Werenski. The Senators retook the lead in the second period with a Tim Stutzle goal, his seventh of the season, via Alex Formenton. This stood for the eventual 2-1 final score, with the three stars being Stutzle, Forsberg (35 for 36 in saves), and Zub.

Back east, the New Jersey Devils host the Los Angeles Kings. Cal Petersen and Jon Gillies are the goalies. New Jersey opened in the first period with a Jesper Bratt goal, his twelfth of the season, guided in by Damon Severson. Los Angeles tied it on an Alex Iafallo goal, his twelfth of the year, going in unassisted. The Devils retook the lead on a Bratt power play goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the season, powered by Jack Hughes and Severson. The Kings tied it on a Viktor Arvidsson goal in the second period, his tenth of the year, helped along by Trevor Moore. Seattle added on with a Colin Blackwell goal, his fourth of the year, fueled by Mason Appleton and Riley Sheahan. The Panthers got one back with a Huberdeau power play goal, his sixteenth of the season, powered by Ekblad and Barkov. Florida tied it on an Aleksander Barkov goal, his eighteenth of the year, passed from Huberdeau. The Kraken gained the lead again in the third period with an Appleton goal, his third of the season, assisted by Alex Wennberg and Vince Dunn. Seattle iced it at 5-3 with a Calle Jarnkrok empty net goal, his seventh of the year, going in unassisted. The Blues took the lad in the second period with a Brayden Schenn power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Vladimir Tarasenko and Torey Krug. St. Louis added on with a Jordan Kyrou goal, his sixteenth of the year, coming off of Tarasenko and Faulk. This held up for a 3-1 win, with the three stars being Tarasenko, Faulk, and Husso (38 for 39 in saves).

NHL 2021-22 - Day 95

We've got eleven games this Saturday, including a pair of matinees. First up...

The Buffalo Sabres host the Philadelphia Flyers. Martin Jones and Michael Houser are the goalies. Buffalo led off in the first period with a Jeff Skinner goal, his fifteenth of the season, via Alex Tuch and Dylan Cozens. Philadelphia tied it on a Rasmus Ristolainen goal, his second of the year, coming off of Travis Sanheim. The Flyers took the lead with a Claude Giroux goal, his thirteenth of the season, passed from Ivan Provorov and Cam Atkinson. The Sabres tied it again with a Tage Thompson power play goal, his thirteenth of the year, powered by Tuch and Skinner. Buffalo took the lead with another Thompson power play goal, his second of the game and fourteenth of the season, made possible by Rasmus Dahlin. The Sabres chased Jones with a Peyton Krebs goal, with helpers from Henri Jokiharju and Mark Jankowski. Carter Hart came into the game in relief. Buffalo added on in the second period with another Krebs goal, fueled by Rasmus Asplund. The Rangers got one back on a shorthanded goal by Kreider, his twenty-seventh of the season, set up by Trouba. New York tied it on a Julien Gauthier goal, his third of the year, passed from Dryden Hunt and Kevin Rooney. Eight games on for an unusually busy Friday. First up...

The Carolina Hurricanes host the New York Rangers. Alexandar Georgiev and Frederik Andersen man the nets. Carolina started in the first period with a Vincent Trocheck power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Tony DeAngelo and Andrei Svechnikov. The Hurricanes added on with a Seth Jarvis goal, his eighth of the year, courtesy of Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen. Carolina extended the lead in the second period as Jesper Fast scored his ninth of the season, thanks to DeAngelo and Steven Lorentz. New York got on the board with a Mika Zibanejad power play goal, his fifteenth of the year, with assists provided by Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider. The Hurricanes replied on an unassisted Aho goal, his seventeenth of the season. Carolina padded the lead on a Nino Niederreiter goal, his eleventh of the year, assisted by Svechnikov and Ian Cole. The Rangers pulled one back in the third period on a Kreider power play goal, his twenty-sixth of the season, with helpers from Adam Fox and Zibanejad. The Islanders padded the lead on another Nelson goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the year, coming off of Anthony Beauvillier and Bailey. This stood for a 4-0 win, with the three stars being Sorokin (17 save shutout), Nelson, and Mayfield, while Pelech and Bailey get the honorable mentions. 

Along to Detroit, as the Red Wings bring in the Dallas Stars. Braden Holtby and Alex Nedeljkovic protect the nets. Dallas opened in the first period with a Ryan Suter goal, his fourth of the season, via Miro Heiskanen and Tyler Seguin. Detroit tied it on a Robby Fabbri goal, his eleventh of the year, assisted by Tyler Bertuzzi. The Stars took the lead back in the second period on a Joel Kiviranta goal, guided in by Heiskanen and Esa Lindell. The Red Wings retied it on a Pius Suter goal, his ninth of the season, made possible by Bertuzzi and Filip Hronek. Detroit took the lead with an unassisted Dylan Larkin goal, his nineteenth of the year. Dallas evened the score on a Lindell goal, his third of the season, with helpers from Joe Pavelski and Jason Robertson. The Red Wings pulled ahead in the third period with a Bertuzzi power play goal, his nineteenth of the year, powered by Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider. Florida tied it on a Sam Reinhart power play goal in the third period, his twelfth of the year, with assists provided by Anthony Duclair and Jonathan Huberdeau. The tie went to a shootout, where Brock Boeser's lone goal wasn't enough as the Canucks lost 2-1 to Anton Lundell, Aleksander Barkov, and the Panthers. Stateside, the Seattle Kraken host the St. Louis Blues. Ville Husso and Joey Daccord draw the starts in goal. The Blues added on with a Brayden Schenn power play goal, his eighth of the year, powered by Ryan O'Reilly and David Perron. The Blues padded the lead on a penalty shot goal by Colton Parayko, his fifth of the year. Finally, the Anaheim Ducks bring in the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and John Gibson guard the cages. The Bruins took the lead in the second period on another Pastrnak goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the season, passed from Matt Grzelcyk on the power play. The Capitals tied it again with a Lars Eller goal, his seventh of the year, helped along by Connor McMichael. Boston took the lead in the third period with a Jake DeBrusk goal, his sixth of the season, going in unassisted. Washington retied it on a Nicklas Backstrom goal, helped along by Tom Wilson. New Jersey led off in the first period with a Nico Hischier power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Jesper Bratt and Jack Hughes. Arizona tied it in the second period on a Dysin Mayo goal, his third of the year, guided in by Loui Eriksson and Alex Galchenyuk. The Coyotes pulled ahead with a Lawson Crouse goal, his tenth of the season, via Eriksson and Anton Stralman. Arizona added on with a Travis Boyd goal, his tenth of the year, helped along by Clayton Keller and Jakob Chychrun. The Coyotes extended the lead in the third period as Johan Larsson scored his sixth of the season, thanks to Crouse and Phil Kessel. Florida got one back with a Sam Bennett goal, his sixteenth of the year, guided in by Mason Marchment and Carter Verhaeghe. Calgary shot back on a Sean Monahan power play goal, his fifth of the season, helped along by Gaudreau. The Flames extended the lead in the third period as Tkachuk scored his seventeenth of the year, thanks to Elias Lindholm and Gaudreau. Calgary padded the lead on a Monahan goal, his second of the game and sixth of the season, courtesy of Gaudreau and Tkachuk. This stood for a 5-1 win, with the three stars given to Tkachuk, Gaudreau, and Monahan.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings bring in the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Cal Petersen guard the cages. Tampa Bay struck first in the first period with a Victor Hedman goal, his eighth of the season, going in unassisted. Los Angeles tied it in the second period on a Blake Lizotte goal, his fifth of the year, an unassisted goal. The Kings took the lead on a shorthanded and unassisted Alex Iafallo goal, his eleventh of the season. The Lightning tied it on a Nikita Kucherov power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Hedman and Steven Stamkos. Tampa Bay retook the lead with a Pierre-Edouard Bellemare shorthanded goal, his fifth of the season, set up by Mathieu Joseph. Los Angeles tied it again with an Arthur Kaliyev power play goal, his seventh of the year, with assists provided by Sean Durzi and Rasmus Kupari. The Lightning took the lead in the third period with a Hedman goal, his second of the game and ninth of the season, made possible by Kucherov and Brayden Point. Tampa Bay added on with a Joseph goal, his sixth of the year, helped along by Ryan McDonagh and Mikhail Sergachev. The Lightning extended the lead with a Stamkos empty net goal, his nineteenth of the season, assisted by Alex Killorn. The Kings got one back with a Phillip Danault goal, his tenth of the year, courtesy of Viktor Arvidsson. The three stars of the 6-4 game were Hedman, Kucherov, and Joseph, while Stamkos gets an honorable mention.
