NHL 2022-23 - Day 62

It's a six-pack on a Sunday this time, beginning with...

The St. Louis Blues hosting the Colorado Avalanche. Pavel Francouz and Jordan Binnington are the goalies. Colorado got going in the second period with a Mikko Rantanen goal, his seventeenth of the season, fueled by Alex Newhook and Brad Hunt. St. Louis tied it in the third period with a Vladimir Tarasenko power play goal, his eighth of the year, powered by Ryan O'Reilly and Robert Thomas. The Blues took the lead with a shorthanded and unassisted Brandon Saad goal, his sixth of the season. The Avalanche retied it on another Rantanen goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the year, courtesy of J.T. Compher and Devon Toews. Colorado won 3-2 in overtime with a Rantanen goal to complete his hat trick on his nineteenth of the campaign, passed from Cale Makar and Valeri Nichushkin. The three stars were Rantanen, Francouz (30 for 32 in saves), and Saad. 

Southeast to Florida, as the Panthers welcome the Seattle Kraken. Martin Jones and Sergei Bobrovsky man the nets. Seattle led off in the first period with a Matty Beniers goal, his eleventh of the season, via Jared McCann. Florida tied it in the second period with an Eric Staal goal, assisted by Colin White and Nick Cousins. The Kraken took the lead with an Andre Burakovsky goal, his tenth of the year, fueled by Yanni Gourde and Oliver Bjorkstrand. Seattle added on in the third period with a Jordan Eberle goal, his seventh of the season, guided in by Will Borgen and Beniers. The Kraken extended the lead on a Daniel Sprong power play goal, his sixth of the year, powered by Alexander Wennberg and Burakovsky. Seattle padded the lead on a Gourde empty net goal, his fourth of the season, set up by Brandon Tanev and Adam Larsson. The Panthers got one back with a Chris Tierney goal, his second of the year, made possible by Matt Kiersted and Zac Dalpe. The final was 5-2, with the three stars being Burakovsky, Beniers, and Gourde.

Up in Columbus, the Blue Jackets bring in the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Quick and Elvis Merzlikins are set to start in goal. Columbus began in the first period with a Kirill Marchenko goal, assisted by Kent Johnson. The Blue Jackets added on with a Boone Jenner power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Jack Roslovic and Johnny Gaudreau. Los Angeles got on the board in the second period with an Anze Kopitar goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Arthur Kaliyev and Kevin Fiala. The Kings tied it on a Blake Lizotte goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of Carl Grundstrom and Alex Iafallo. Columbus pulled ahead with a Patrik Laine goal, his eighth of the year, fueled by Roslovic and Erik Gudbranson. Los Angeles tied it again with a Jaret Anderson-Dolan goal, his second of the season, helped along by Sean Durzi. The Blue Jackets regained the lead with a Roslovic shorthanded goal, his second of the year, set up by Eric Robinson and Vladislav Gavrikov. Columbus extended the lead as Roslovic scored his second of the game and third of the season on the power play, thanks to Gaudreau and Laine. The Kings got one back in the third period with a Kopitar goal, his second of the game and tenth of the year, courtesy of Sean Walker. Los Angeles tied it on an Adrian Kempe goal, his tenth of the season, going in unassisted. The Blue Jackets won 6-5 in overtime with a Gaudreau goal, his tenth of the year, made possible by Laine and Vladislav Gavrikov. The three stars were given to Roslovic, Laine, and Gaudreau, while Kopitar and Gavrikov get the honorable mentions.

Further north, the Winnipeg Jets host the Washington Capitals. Charlie Lindgren and Connor Hellebuyck are in the creases. Washington dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Trevor van Riemsdyk goal, his second of the season, helped along by Nic Dowd and Aliaksei Protas. The Capitals added on with an Evgeny Kuznetsov power play goal, his fourth of the year, powered by John Carlson and Conor Sheary. Washington extended the lead as Marcus Johansson scored his seventh of the season, a shorthanded penalty shot. The Capitals padded the lead as Lars Eller scored his sixth of the year, thanks to Anthony Mantha and Dmitry Orlov. Winnipeg got on the board in the third period with an Adam Lowry goal, his seventh of the season, coming off of Josh Morrissey and Morgan Barron. The Jets got closer with a Pierre-Luc Dubois goal, his fourteenth of the year, guided in by Kyle Connor and Mikey Eyssimont. Washington iced it at 5-2 with an Alex Ovechkin empty net goal, his seventeenth of the campaign, set up by Orlov. The three stars were Johansson, Orlov, and Lindgren (29 for 31 in saves).

Way down in Arizona, the Coyotes welcome the Philadelphia Flyers. Carter Hart and Karel Vejmelka protect the nets. Arizona started in the first period with a Clayton Keller power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by J.J. Moser and Nick Ritchie. Philadelphia tied it in the second period with a Morgan Frost goal, his fourth of the year, via James van Riemsdyk and Owen Tippett. The Flyers took the lead with a van Riemsdyk goal, his third of the season, coming off of Frost. The Coyotes tied it again with a Keller goal, his second of the game and ninth of the year, passed from Nick Schmaltz and Travis Boyd. Arizona gained the lead on a Jack McBain goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Moser and Liam O'Brien. Philadelphia tied it with a Tippett goal, his eighth of the year, helped along by van Riemsdyk and Frost. The Coyotes pulled ahead in the third period with an unassisted Ritchie goal, his seventh of the season. The Flyers evened it on a Travis Konecny goal, his eleventh of the year, made possible by Frost. Arizona won 5-4 in overtime when Keller completed his hat trick on his tenth of the season, thanks to Jakob Chychrun and Schmaltz. The three stars were Keller, Ritchie, and Frost, while Schmaltz, Moser, van Riemsdyk and Tippett get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Vegas Golden Knights bring in the Boston Bruins. Linus Ullmark and Logan Thompson guard the cages. Vegas opened in the first period with a Mark Stone power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Chandler Stephenson and Ben Hutton. Boston tied it in the second period with a Patrice Bergeron goal, his tenth of the year, coming off of David Pastrnak and Connor Clifton. The Bruins took the lead with a Jake DeBrusk goal, his ninth of the season, via Pavel Zacha and Taylor Hall. Boston added on with a Charlie Coyle goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Derek Forbort. This stood for a 3-1 final score, with the three stars given to Ullmark (30 for 31 in saves), DeBrusk, and Coyle.

NHL 2022-23 - Day 61

Eight games on for a Saturday, beginning with...

The Nashville Predators hosting the Ottawa Senators. Cam Talbot and Juuse Saros are the goalies. Nashville got going in the second period with a Yakov Trenin goal, his second of the season, assisted Mark Jankowski and Tanner Jeannot. Ottawa tied it on a Claude Giroux goal, his twelfth of the year, courtesy of Derick Brassard and Shane Pinto. The Senators took the lead with an Alex DeBrincat goal, his seventh of the season, coming off of Pinto and Drake Batherson in the third period. Ottawa added on with a Batherson power play goal, his seventh of the year, powered by Brady Tkachuk. The Predators got one back with a Nino Niederreiter goal, his tenth of the season, made possible by Roman Josi and Ryan Johansen. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars going to Batherson, Pinto, and DeBrincat.

Along to Dallas, as the Stars welcome the Detroit Red Wings. Ville Husso and Jake Oettinger tend the twines. Detroit began in the first period with a Dylan Larkin goal, his tenth of the season, via Austin Czarnik. Dallas tied it on a Denis Gurianov goal, his second of the year, coming off of Mason Marchment and Tyler Seguin. The Stars pulled ahead in the second period with a Jamie Benn power play goal, his eleventh of the season, powered by Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen. The Red Wings tied it on a David Perron goal, his ninth of the year, passed from Ben Chiarot and Moritz Seider. Dallas won 3-2 in overtime with a Nils Lundkvist goal, his third of the campaign, guided in by Marchment. The three stars were Marchment, Lundkvist, and Benn.

Over in Tampa Bay, the Lightning host the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and Andrei Vasilevskiy are the Russian goalies. Tampa Bay led off in the first period with a Pat Maroon goal, via Anthony Cirelli and Cal Foote. Florida tied it in the second period with a Zac Dalpe goal, his second of the season, made possible by Josh Mahura and Eric Staal. The Lightning retook the lead with a Brayden Point goal in the third period, his fourteenth of the year, coming off of Nikita Kucherov and Brandon Hagel. Tampa Bay added on with a Mikhail Sergachev goal, his fifth of the season, passed from Foote and Vladislav Namestnikov. The Lightning extended the lead as Steven Stamkos scored his fifteenth of the year, thanks to Alex Killorn and Nick Paul. The final was 4-1, and the three stars were Vasilevskiy (24 for 25 in saves), Foote, and Point. 

Up in Montreal, the Canadiens bring in the Los Angeles Kings. Pheonix Copley and Jake Allen are in the blue paint. Los Angeles started in the first period with an Anze Kopitar goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Kevin Fiala. The Kings added on with a Viktor Arvidsson goal, his eighth of the year, passed from Phillip Danault and Mikey Anderson. Los Angeles extended the lead in the third period as Alexander Edler scored, thanks to Blake Lizotte. Montreal got on the board with a Mike Hoffman goal, his sixth of the season, via Kaiden Guhle and Evgenii Dadonov. The Canadiens got closer with a Cole Caufield goal, his sixteenth of the year, with helpers from Jordan Harris and Christian Dvorak. The Kings iced it at 4-2 with an Adrian Kempe empty net goal, his ninth of the campaign, going in unassisted. The three stars were Edler, Arvidsson, and Kopitar. 

Stateside, the Pittsburgh Penguins welcome the Buffalo Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Casey DeSmith man the nets. Pittsburgh opened in the first period with a Rickard Rakell power play goal, his twelfth of the season, powered by Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby. The Penguins added on with a Crosby goal, his sixteenth of the year, helped along by Jake Guentzel and Brian Dumoulin. Buffalo got on the board with a Peyton Krebs goal in the third period, his second of the season, coming off of Casey Fitzgerald and Zemgus Girgensons. Pittsburgh replied on a Crosby goal, his second of the game and seventeenth of the year, set up by Guentzel and Bryan Rust. The final was 3-1, and the three stars were Crosby, DeSmith (37 for 38 in saves), and Guentzel. 

North again to Toronto, as the Maple Leafs host the Calgary Flames. Dan Vladar and Matt Murray are the masked men. Toronto struck first in the first period with an Auston Matthews power play goal, his fifteenth of the season, powered by William Nylander and Rasmus Sandin. Calgary tied it on a Noah Hanifin goal, his second of the year, courtesy of Jonathan Huberdeau and Elias Lindholm. The Flames took the lead on a Nazem Kadri goal, his eleventh of the season, assisted by Dillon Dube and Andrew Mangiapane. The Maple Leafs tied it again with a Nylander power play goal, his sixteenth of the year, with assists provided by Sandin and Mitch Marner. Calgary gained the lead in second period with a Trevor Lewis goal, his fifth of the season, made possible by Mikael Backlund. Toronto tied it on a Nylander goal, his second of the game and seventeenth of the year, guided in by Matthews. The Flames took the lead again with a Hanifin power play goal, his second of the game and third of the season, with helpers from Adam Ruzicka and Mangiapane. The Maple Leafs tied it again with a Michael Bunting goal, his fifth of the year, fueled by Matthews and Nylander. In New York, the Islanders bring in the Carolina Hurricanes. Pyotr Kochetkov and Ilya Sorokin guard the cages. The Hurricanes added on in the third period with a Jesperi Kotkaniemi goal, his third of the season, assisted by Brent Burns and Teuvo Teravainen. Carolina iced it at 3-0 with a Jordan Staal goal, his seventh of the year, helped along by Jordan Martinook and Stefan Noesen. Finally, the Vancouver Canucks host the Minnesota Wild. Filip Gustavsson and Spencer Martin patrol the creases. Minnesota kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Matt Boldy power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Mats Zuccarello and Calen Addison. The Wild added on in the second period with a Connor Dewar shorthanded goal, his fourth of the year, going in unassisted. Minnesota extended the lead in the third period as Sam Steel scored his sixth of the season, thanks to Zuccarello. The final stood at 3-0, with the three stars awarded to Gustavsson (35 save shutout), Zuccarello, and Boldy.

Pittsburgh got going in the second period with a Jake Guentzel power play goal, his thirteenth of the season, powered by Evgeni Malkin and Jeff Petry. Buffalo tied it on a Victor Olofsson goal, his twelfth of the year, coming off of Tyson Jost and Casey Mittelstadt. The Sabres took the lead with a Jeff Skinner goal, his thirteenth of the season, courtesy of Tage Thompson and Mittelstadt. The Penguins tied it in the third period with a Rickard Rakell goal, his eleventh of the year, guided in by Danton Heinen. Pittsburgh took the lead with a Brock McGinn goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Kasperi Kapanen and Jan Rutta. Buffalo tied it on a Kyle Okposo power play goal, his second of the year, with assists provided by Jack Quinn and Mittelstadt. Finally, the Anaheim Ducks host the San Jose Sharks. Eetu Makiniemi is mismatched with John Gibson in goal. San Jose cracked the scoresheet in the first period with a Timo Meier goal, his fourteenth of the season, fueled by Erik Karlsson and Tomas Hertl. The Sharks added on in the second period with a Scott Harrington goal, via Kevin Labanc and Meier. San Jose extended the lead on a Karlsson power play goal, his twelfth of the year, powered by Alexander Barabanov and Hertl. The Sharks padded the lead as Nico Sturm scored his seventh of the season, with the help of Matt Benning. The Predators tied it in the second period with an Alexandre Carrier goal, passed from Filip Forsberg and Nino Neiderreiter. Tampa Bay retook the lead in the third period with a Point goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the year, guided in by Anthony Cirelli and Nikita Kucherov. The Lightning extended the lead as Nick Paul scored his twelfth of the season, thanks to Stamkos. The Jets added on in the second period with a Kyle Connor goal, his eleventh of the year, fueled by Mikey Eyssimont and Neal Pionk. Winnipeg extended the lead as Blake Wheeler scored his eighth of the season on the power play, powered by Scheifele and Dubois. St. Louis got on the board with a Robert Thomas goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Vladimir Tarasenko and Calle Rosen. The Jets fired back with a Dubois goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the season, assisted by Josh Morrissey and Dylan DeMelo. The Blues fired back with a Josh Leivo goal, his second of the year, helped along by Ryan O'Reilly and Brayden Schenn. Seven games on an unusually busy Wednesday. First up...

The Philadelphia Flyers host the Washington Capitals. Charlie Lindgren and Carter Hart are the goalies. Philadelphia opened in the first period with a Kevin Hayes power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Travis Konecny and Tony DeAngelo. Washington tied it in the second period with a T.J. Oshie power play goal, his fifth of the year, helped along by Dylan Strome and Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Capitals pulled ahead in the third period with a Strome goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of John Carlson and Erik Gustafsson. Washington added on with an empty net goal by Alex Ovechkin, his fourteenth of the year, set up by Anthony Mantha and Carlson. The Capitals iced it at 4-1 with another Ovechkin empty net goal, his second of the game and fifteenth of the campaign, going in unassisted. The three stars were Strome, Ovechkin, and Carlson.

Over in Columbus, the Blue Jackets welcome the Buffalo Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Joonas Korpisalo are the Finnish goalies. Buffalo started in the first period with a Dylan Cozens power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Rasmus Dahlin and Tage Thompson. The Sabres added on with a Thompson goal, his seventeenth of the year, guided in by Alex Tuch. Buffalo extended the lead as Dahlin scored his ninth of the season, thanks to Cozens and Jack Quinn. The Wild added on with a Mason Shaw goal, his fourth of the year, via Connor Dewar and Jon Merrill. Calgary got on the board with a Nazem Kadri power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Elias Lindholm and Rasmus Andersson. The Flames tied it on a Blake Coleman goal, his fifth of the year, helped along by Adam Ruzicka and Mikael Backlund. Calgary pulled ahead with a Tyler Toffoli power play goal, his ninth of the season, with assists provided by Andersson and Lindholm. Minnesota retied it on a Merrill goal in the third period, coming off of Shaw and Dewar. The Flames fired back with an Andersson goal, his fourth of the year, made possible by Coleman and Ruzicka. Vegas opened in the first period with a Paul Cotter goal, his third of the season, assisted by William Karlsson and Shea Theodore. The Golden Knights added on with a Jonathan Marchessault goal, his tenth of the year, going in unassisted. Vegas extended the lead in the second period as Cotter scored his second of the game and fourth of the season, thanks to Mark Stone and Theodore. Boston got on the board with a Brad Marchand goal, his eighth of the year, coming off of Patrice Bergeron and Brandon Carlo. The Bruins got closer with a David Pastrnak goal, his seventeenth of the season, helped along by Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm. Boston tied it in the third period with a Taylor Hall power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Marchand. Washington took the lead in the third period with a Nic Dowd goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Aliaksei Protas and Nick Jensen. The final held at 3-2, with the three stars being Dowd, Oshie, and Eller.

Also in Alberta, the Calgary Flames welcome the Arizona Coyotes. Karel Vejmelka and Dan Vladar start in goal. Calgary began in the first period with a Dillon Dube goal, his fifth of the season, made possible by Chris Tanev and Nazem Kadri. The Flames added on with an Elias Lindholm power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau. Arizona got on the board with a Shayne Gostisbehere goal in the second period, his fifth of the season, courtesy of Matias Maccelli and Jakob Chychrun. The Coyotes tied it in the third period with a Chychrun goal, his third of the year, passed from Clayton Keller and Gostisbehere. Calgary took the lead with a Kadri power play goal, his ninth of the season, with assists provided by Tyler Toffoli and Huberdeau. The final held at 3-2, with the three stars given to Kadri, Chychrun, and Gostisbehere, while Huberdeau gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Vancouver Canucks bring in the Montreal Canadiens. Sam Montembeault and Spencer Martin are the inexperienced goalies. Montreal kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Cole Caufield goal, his fourteenth of the season, assisted by Jordan Harris. The Canadiens added on with a Nick Suzuki goal, his fourteenth of the year, via Kaiden Guhle. Montreal extended the lead as Sean Monahan scored his sixth of the season, thanks to Suzuki and Mike Matheson. The Canadiens padded the lead on a Michael Pezzetta goal, made possible by Harris and Jake Evans. Vancouver got on the board in the second period with a Conor Garland goal, his fourth of the year, passed from Andrei Kuzmenko. The Canucks got closer with an Ilya Mikheyev goal, his seventh of the season, coming off of Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser. Vancouver chipped away in the third period with a Bo Horvat goal, his twentieth of the year, guided in by Nils Hoglander and Riley Stillman. The Canucks tied it on a Mikheyev goal, his second of the game and eighth of the season, helped along by Pettersson and Stillman. Vancouver pulled ahead with a Jack Studnicka goal, his second of the year, going in unassisted. Montreal tied it on a Christian Dvorak goal, his fifth of the season, with helpers from Evgenii Dadonov and Joel Armia. The Canadiens regained the lead with a Josh Anderson goal, his sixth of the year, an unassisted goal. The Canucks tied it again with a Kuzmenko power play goal, his twelfth of the season, powered by J.T. Miller and Quinn Hughes. Vancouver won 7-6 in overtime with a Pettersson goal, his twelfth of the year, going in unassisted. The three stars were Pettersson, Mikheyev, and Kuzmenko, while Stillman, Suzuki, and Harris get the honorable mentions.
