NHL 2022-23 - Day 95

Another busy day with 11 games on, beginning with...

The Boston Bruins hosting the Philadelphia Flyers. Carter Hart and Jeremy Swayman protect the nets. Boston opened in the first period with a David Pastrnak goal, his thirty-fourth of the season, assisted by Pavel Zacha and David Krejci. The Bruins added on with a Zacha goal, his sixth of the year, via Krejci and Hampus Lindholm. Boston extended the lead in the second period as Brad Marchand scored his fourteenth of the season, thanks to Matt Grzelcyk and Patrice Bergeron. The Bruins padded the lead on a Zacha goal, his second of the game and seventh of the year, made possible by Krejci. Samuel Ersson replaced Hart in goal. Boston continued in the third period with a Pastrnak power play goal, his second of the game and thirty-fifth of the season, powered by Marchand and Charlie McAvoy. The Bruins kept going with a Grzelcyk goal, his third of the year, with helpers from McAvoy and Pastrnak. The final stayed at 6-0, with the three stars awarded to Pastrnak, Zacha, and Krejci, while Swayman (29 save shutout), Marchand, Grzelcyk, and McAvoy get the honorable mentions.

Along to Buffalo, as the Sabres welcome the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen are the goalies. Florida started in the first period with a Brandon Montour goal, his eighth of the season, helped along by Matthew Tkachuk. The Panthers added on in the second period with a Sam Bennett goal, his tenth of the year, via Tkachuk and Carter Verhaeghe. Florida extended the lead in the third period as Anton Lundell scored his fifth of the season, thanks to Sam Reinhart and Aleksander Barkov. Buffalo got on the board with an Alex Tuch goal, his twenty-first of the year, going in unassisted. The Panthers iced it at 4-1 with a Verhaeghe empty net goal, his twentieth of the campaign, set up by Tkachuk and Gustav Forsling. The three stars were Tkachuk, Verhaeghe, and Bobrovsky (28 for 29 in saves). 

Over in Colorado, the Avalanche bring in the Detroit Red Wings. Ville Husso and Pavel Francouz are set to start in goal. Colorado led off in the first period with an Artturi Lehkonen goal, his twelfth of the season, assisted by Cale Makar and Devon Toews. The Avalanche added on with a Makar power play goal, his twelfth of the year, powered by Nathan MacKinnon and Valeri Nichushkin. Colorado extended the lead in the second period as Makar scored his second of the game and thirteenth of the season, thanks to MacKinnon and J.T. Compher. The Avalanche padded the lead on a Compher power play goal, his ninth of the year, with assists provided by Evan Rodrigues and Samuel Girard. Colorado continued on a MacKinnon goal, his twelfth of the season, made possible by Rodrigues and Toews. Detroit got on the board with an Andrew Copp goal, his fourth of the year, helped along by David Perron and Michael Rasmussen. Magnus Hellberg replaced Husso for the third period. The Red Wings got on the board in the third period with a Ben Chiarot goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Filip Hronek and Dylan Larkin. Up in Seattle, the Kraken host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Philipp Grubauer man the nets. Tampa Bay struck first in the first period with a Pierre-Edouard Bellemare goal, his second of the season, coming off of Ian Cole and Corey Perry. The Lightning added on with a Nick Paul goal in the third period, his sixteenth of the year, going in unassisted. Seattle got on the board with a Vince Dunn goal, his eighth of the season, via Adam Larsson. Tampa Bay replied with a Brandon Hagel empty net goal, his seventeenth of the year, set up by Alex Killorn and Erik Cernak. The Lightning iced it at 4-1 with a Victor Hedman empty net goal, his second of the campaign, with helpers from Hagel and Steven Stamkos. The three stars were Hagel, Vasilevskiy (22 for 23 in saves), and Paul.

South to San Jose, where the Sharks welcome the New Jersey Devils. Vitek Vanecek and James Reimer are in the creases. New Jersey began in the first period with a Ryan Graves goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Nico Hischier and Yegor Sharangovich. San Jose tied it on a Timo Meier goal, his twenty-fifth of the year, courtesy of Mikey Eyssimont and Erik Karlsson. The Sharks took the lead with a Karlsson power play goal, his fourteenth of the season, powered by Meier and Tomas Hertl. The Devils tied it in the third period with a Hischier goal, his twentieth of the year, guided in by Ondrej Palat and Jesper Bratt. San Jose regained the lead on a Nick Bonino goal, his sixth of the season, helped along by Eyssimont and Matt Benning. New Jersey tied it on a Jack Hughes goal, his twenty-ninth of the year, coming off of Dougie Hamilton and Bratt. The Devils won 4-3 with Tomas Tatar netting the lone tally in the shootout. The three stars were Hischier, Bratt, and Karlsson, while Meier and Eyssimont get the honorable mentions.

Back east, the Vegas Golden Knights bring in the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger and Logan Thompson guard the cages. Dallas kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Jamie Benn goal, his seventeenth of the season, via Ty Dellandrea. The Stars added on in the second period with a Joel Kiviranta goal, his sixth of the year, courtesy of Fredrik Olofsson and Miro Heiskanen. Dallas extended the lead in the third period as Ryan Suter scored, thanks to Nils Lundkvist and Dellandrea. The Stars iced it at 4-0 with a Tyler Seguin empty net goal, his twelfth of the campaign, set up by Joe Pavelski. The three stars were Oettinger (27 save shutout), Dellandrea, and Benn.

Further east, the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Casey DeSmith are set to start in goal. Pittsburgh was first to score in the first period with a Jason Zucker goal, his eleventh of the season, made possible by Evgeni Malkin and Rickard Rakell. Anaheim tied it with an Adam Henrique power play goal, his fourteenth of the year, powered by Mason McTavish and Troy Terry. The Penguins took the lead in the second period on a Malkin goal, his fifteenth of the season, assisted by Rakell and Zucker. The Ducks tied it on a John Klingberg power play goal, his sixth of the year, with assists provided by Trevor Zegras and Terry in the third period. Anaheim took the lead with a Zegras goal, his fourteenth of the season, coming off of Ryan Strome. Pittsburgh retied it with a Bryan Rust goal, his tenth of the year, passed from Jake Guentzel and Rakell. The Penguins won 4-3 in overtime with a Guentzel goal, his eighteenth of the campaign, guided in by Sidney Crosby. The three stars were Guentzel, Rakell, and Zegras, while Malkin, Zucker, and Terry get the honorable mentions.

Along to Columbus, where the Blue Jackets welcome the New York Rangers. Jaroslav Halak and Elvis Merzlikins patrol the creases. New York drew first blood in the first period with a Mika Zibanejad goal, his twentieth of the season, assisted by Kaapo Kakko and Adam Fox. The Rangers added on with a Barclay Goodrow power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by K'Andre Miller and Kakko. New York extended the lead in the second period as Vitali Kravtsov scored his third of the season, thanks to Filip Chytil and Goodrow. Columbus got on the board in the third period with an Andrew Peeke goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Gustav Nyquist and Jack Roslovic. The final held at 3-1, with the three stars being Goodrow, Kakko, and Halak (24 for 25 in saves).

Next up, the New York Islanders bring in the Washington Capitals. Darcy Kuemper and Ilya Sorokin tend the twines. New York led off in the first period with a Sebastian Aho goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Josh Bailey and Noah Dobson. The Islanders added on with a Matt Martin goal, his fourth of the year, via Cal Clutterbuck and Alexander Romanov. New York extended the lead in the second period as Hudson Fasching scored his third of the season, thanks to Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Anthony Beauvillier. Washington got on the board with a Garnet Hathaway goal, his seventh of the year, passed from Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson. The Capitals got closer with a Tom Wilson goal, guided in by Nicklas Backstrom and Dmitry Orlov. Washington tied it in the third period as T.J. Oshie scored his ninth of the season, with the help of Erik Gustafsson and Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Capitals won 4-3 in overtime with an Orlov goal, his third of the year, helped along by Oshie and Sonny Milano. The three stars were Orlov, Oshie, and Wilson.

West again to St. Louis, where the Blues host the Ottawa Senators. Cam Talbot and Jordan Binnington are the veterans in goal. St. Louis began in the first period with a Jake Neighbours goal, his third of the season, via Calle Rosen and Josh Leivo. The Blues added on with a Noel Acciari goal, his tenth of the year, going in unassisted. Ottawa got on the board in the second period with a Tim Stutzle goal, his nineteenth of the campaign, assisted by Brady Tkachuk and Drake Batherson. This only made it 2-1, the eventual final, with the three stars going to Binnington (32 for 33 in saves), Acciari, and Neighbours. 

Finally, the Nashville Predators host the Calgary Flames. Jacob Markstrom and Juuse Saros are between the pipes. Nashville struck first in the first period with a Roman Josi goal, his twelfth of the season, via Ryan McDonagh and Matt Duchene. The Predators added on with a Juuso Parssinen goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Tanner Jeannot and Colton Sissons. Calgary got on the board in the second period with a Nikita Zadorov goal, his seventh of the campaign, guided in by Mikael Backlund and Andrew Mangiapane. The final held from here at 2-1, with the three stars being Saros (38 for 39 in saves), Parssinen, and Josi.

NHL 2022-23 - Day 94

There's just three games on today, beginning with...

The Carolina Hurricanes hosting the Vancouver Canucks. Collin Delia and Pyotr Kochetkov are the young goalies. Carolina began in the first period with a Paul Stastny goal, his third of the season, assisted by Andrei Svechnikov and Calvin de Haan. The Hurricanes added on with a Jordan Martinook goal, his tenth of the year, made possible by Jaccob Slavin. Vancouver got on the board with an Ethan Bear goal, his third of the season, fueled by Andrei Kuzmenko and Jack Studnicka in the second period. The Canucks tied it in the third period with a J.T. Miller goal, his seventeenth of the year, via Quinn Hughes. Carolina retook the lead with a Sebastian Aho goal, his fourteenth of the season, coming off of Teuvo Teravainen and Slavin. Vancouver retied it with a Brock Boeser goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Bo Horvat and Kuzmenko. The tie went to a shootout, where Kuzmenko and Elias Pettersson lifted the Canucks to a 4-3 win over Svechnikov and the Hurricanes. The three stars were Kuzmenko, Slavin, and Svechnikov. 

Up in New York, the Rangers welcome the Montreal Canadiens. Sam Montembeault is mismatched with Igor Shesterkin in goal. Montreal got going in the second period with a Kirby Dach power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Christian Dvorak and Cole Caufield. New York tied it on an Artemi Panarin goal, his twelfth of the year, assisted by Filip Chytil and K'Andre Miller. The Canadiens took the lead back in the third period with a Caufield goal, his twenty-sixth of the campaign, passed from Nick Suzuki and Joel Armia. This stood for a 2-1 win, with the three stars going to Caufield, Montembeault (38 for 39 in saves), and Dach. 

Finally, the Winnipeg Jets bring in the Arizona Coyotes. Karel Vejmelka and Connor Hellebuyck protect the nets. Winnipeg dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Pierre-Luc Dubois power play goal, his twentieth of the season, powered by Josh Morrissey and Nikolaj Ehlers. Arizona tied it on a Clayton Keller goal, his fifteenth of the year, guided in by Nick Schmaltz and Jakob Chychrun. The Jets retook the lead on a Blake Wheeler goal, his eleventh of the campaign, fueled by Mark Scheifele and Cole Perfetti. This stood for the eventual 2-1 final score, with the three stars given to Hellebuyck (20 for 21 in saves), Wheeler, and Dubois.

A heavy schedule today sees 14 games to be played. First up...

The Dallas Stars host the Calgary Flames. Dan Vladar and Scott Wedgewood are the backups in goal. Calgary led off in the first period with an Andrew Mangiapane goal, his ninth of the season, via Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman. The Flames added on with a Trevor Lewis power play goal, his eighth of the year, powered by MacKenzie Weegar and Chris Tanev. Dallas got on the board with a Jamie Benn shorthanded goal, his sixteenth of the season, set up by Ty Dellandrea. Calgary replied in the second period with an Elias Lindholm power play goal, his fourteenth of the year, with assists provided by Tyler Toffoli and Rasmus Andersson. The Flames extended the lead as Nazem Kadri scored his seventeenth of the season, thanks to Jonathan Huberdeau and Michael Stone. Calgary padded the lead on an Andersson goal, his sixth of the year, courtesy of Kadri and Huberdeau. The Flames continued with a Tanev goal, made possible by Weegar. NHL 2022-23 - Day 92

A quieter day with three games on today, beginning with...

The Pittsburgh Penguins hosting the Winnipeg Jets. David Rittich and Dustin Tokarski are the backups in goal. Winnipeg started in the first period with a Blake Wheeler power play goal, his tenth of the season, powered by Cole Perfetti. Pittsburgh tied it on a Drew O'Connor goal, his second of the year, coming off of Kasperi Kapanen. The Jets took the lead back in the second period with a Mark Scheifele goal, his twenty-fifth of the season, via Wheeler and Perfetti. Winnipeg added on with a Nikolaj Ehlers goal, his third of the year, courtesy of Kyle Connor and Dylan DeMelo. The Jets extended the lead in the third period as Scheifele scored his second of the game and twenty-sixth of the campaign, thanks to DeMelo and Perfetti. This made it 4-1, the final, with the three stars going to Scheifele, Perfetti, and Wheeler, while DeMelo gets an honorable mention. 

Out west, the Anaheim Ducks welcome the New Jersey Devils. Vitek Vanecek and John Gibson start in goal. The Canucks added on with a Brock Boeser goal, his eighth of the year, guided in by Bo Horvat and Ilya Mikheyev. Vancouver extended the lead as Hughes scored his second of the season, thanks to William Lockwood and Elias Pettersson. Dustin Tokarski replaced DeSmith in goal. Pittsburgh got on the board with a power play goal by Evgeni Malkin, his thirteenth of the year, powered by Ty Smith and Bryan Rust. The Penguins got closer with a Sidney Crosby goal, his twenty-first of the season, helped along by Brian Dumoulin and Rust. Pittsburgh tied it on a Jason Zucker goal, his tenth of the year, fueled by Malkin. The Penguins pulled ahead in the second period with another Malkin goal, his second of the game and fourteenth of the season, passed from Zucker. Pittsburgh padded the lead on a Rickard Rakell power play goal, his fourteenth of the year, with assists provided by Malkin and Smith. The Canucks got one back in the third period with a Travis Dermott goal, assisted by Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Boeser. The final held at 5-4, with the three stars being Malkin, Zucker, and Rust, while Smith, Boeser, Hughes, and Schenn get the honorable mentions.

South to Raleigh, as the Carolina Hurricanes welcome the New Jersey Devils. Vitek Vanecek and Pyotr Kochetkov are in the blue paint. Carolina kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Jesperi Kotkaniemi shorthanded goal, his seventh of the season, set up by Martin Necas. New Jersey tied it on a Jonas Siegenthaler goal, his second of the year, via Dougie Hamilton and Nico Hischier. The Hurricanes took the lead in the second period with a Max Pacioretty goal, his third of the season, passed from Sebastian Aho and Brady Skjei. Carolina added on with an Aho shorthanded goal, his thirteenth of the year, coming off of Teuvo Teravainen and Brett Pesce. The Devils replied with a Dawson Mercer goal, his ninth of the season, assisted by Damon Severson and Ryan Graves. New Jersey tied it on a Jesper Boqvist goal, his fourth of the year, guided in by Mercer and Michael McLeod. The Devils took the lead in the third period with a Mercer goal, his tenth of the season, helped along by Boqvist and McLeod. New Jersey iced it at 5-3 with a Hischier empty net goal, his nineteenth of the year, coming off of Tomas Tatar and Erik Haula. The three stars belonged to Mercer, Boqvist, and McLeod, while Hischier and Aho get the honorable mentions.

Along to Detroit, where the Red Wings bring in the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Ville Husso guard the cages. Detroit led off in the first period with a Jake Walman goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Moritz Seider and Andrew Copp. The Red Wings added on with a Jonatan Berggren goal, his seventh of the year, courtesy of Copp and Seider. Detroit extended the lead as Oskar Sundqvist scored his sixth of the season, thanks to Seider and Lucas Raymond. Winnipeg got on the board with a Neal Pionk goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Mark Scheifele and Cole Perfetti. The Red Wings replied in the second period with a Dominik Kubalik goal, his thirteenth of the season, passed from Sundqvist. The Jets got one back with a Sam Gagner goal, his eighth of the year, fueled by David Gustafsson and Axel Jonsson-Fjallby. Winnipeg pulled closer on a Nate Schmidt goal, his fourth of the season, guided in by Perfetti and Blake Wheeler. Detroit answered with a Dylan Larkin power play goal, his fourteenth of the year, powered by Seider and Raymond. The Jets got one back in the third period with a Nikolaj Ehlers goal, his second of the season, helped along by Kyle Connor and Pionk. The Red Wings countered with a Robby Fabbri goal, his second of the year, with helpers from Gustav Lindstrom and Joe Veleno. Winnipeg pulled one back with a Scheifele goal, his twenty-fourth of the season, with helpers from Pierre-Luc Dubois and Ehlers. Detroit finished it at 7-5 with a Raymond empty net goal, his eleventh of the year, set up by Larkin. Back east, the New York Islanders host the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger and Ilya Sorokin tend the twines. Dallas drew first blood in the first period with a Jason Robertson goal, his twenty-ninth of the season, assisted by Joe Pavelski and Tyler Seguin. New York tied it on an Anders Lee power play goal, his fifteenth of the season, powered by Brock Nelson and Noah Dobson. The tie went to a shootout, where Robertson's lone tally lifted the Stars to a 2-1 win. The three stars were Oettinger (26 for 27 in saves), Robertson, and Sorokin (25 for 26 in saves).

In St. Louis, the Blues welcome the Calgary Flames. Jacob Markstrom and Jordan Binnington are the masked men. St. Louis was first to score in the first period with a Pavel Buchnevich power play goal, his fourteenth of the season, powered by Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas. Calgary tied it on a Milan Lucic goal, his fourth of the year, guided in by Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau. The Flames took the lead with a Mikael Backlund goal, his ninth of the season, via Nikita Zadorov and Andrew Mangiapane. The Flames added on in the second period with a Mangiapane goal, his eighth of the year, passed from Noah Hanifin and Blake Coleman. The Blues got one back with a Nikita Alexandrov goal, his second of the season, made possible by Steven Santini and Jake Neighbours. St. Louis tied it on a Kyrou goal, his twentieth of the year, helped along by Buchnevich and Calle Rosen. The Blues won 4-3 on a Thomas goal, his eleventh of the campaign, courtesy of Kyrou and Justin Faulk. Further west, the Arizona Coyotes bring in the San Jose Sharks. Kaapo Kahkonen and Karel Vejmelka are in the creases. San Jose got going in the first period with a Kevin Labanc goal, his tenth of the season, via Tomas Hertl and Timo Meier. Arizona tied it on a Barrett Hayton goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Shayne Gostisbehere and Jakob Chychrun. The Coyotes took the lead with a Christian Fischer goal, his eighth of the season, passed from Gostisbehere and Chychrun. The Sharks tied it on a Nico Sturm goal in the second period, his tenth of the year, with helpers from Nick Bonino and Oskar Lindblom. The Sharks took the lead in the third period with a Matt Nieto goal, his eighth of the season, made possible by Logan Couture and Alexander Barabanov. San Jose added on with a Jaycob Megna goal, fueled by Erik Karlsson and Labanc. The final remained at 4-2, with the three stars being Labanc, Gostisbehere, and Chychrun.

Finally, the Colorado Avalanche host the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and Alexandar Georgiev are between the pipes. Florida dented the scoreboard in the second period with an Aleksander Barkov goal, his tenth of the season, made possible by Anton Lundell. The Panthers added on with a Brandon Montour goal, his seventh of the year, coming off of Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Bennett. Florida extended the lead on a Bennett power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Sam Reinhart. Colorado got on the board with an Andrew Cogliano goal, his sixth of the year, via Kurtis MacDermid and Cale Makar. The Panthers replied with a Matthew Tkachuk goal, his twenty-first of the season, helped along by Barkov and Montour. The Avalanche got one back with a Mikko Rantanen goal, his twenty-seventh of the year, passed from Brad Hunt and J.T. Compher. Colorado pulled one back with a Nathan MacKinnon goal, his eleventh of the season, with helpers from Rantanen and Samuel Girard. The Avalanche tied it on a Compher goal, his eighth of the year, courtesy of MacDermid and Evan Rodrigues. Florida pulled ahead with a Tkachuk power play goal, his second of the game and twenty-second of the season, going in unassisted. The final was 5-4, with the three stars being Tkachuk, Barkov, and Montour, while Bennett, Rantanen, Compher, and MacDermid get the honorable mentions.
