MLB Day 164 2012

Welcome to Super Sunday 2, the second of four busy Sundays for me. This is for the baseball, and the football will be in two posts throughout the day. We begin our games in...

New York, as the Yankees host the Tampa Bay Rays. Matt Moore and Hiroki Kuroda are set to start. New York got going in the third inning as Derek Jeter singled home Eduardo Nunez, before scoring on a single by Alex Rodriguez, and then Russell Martin hit a three-run home run, sweeping in Rodriguez and Robinson Cano. Tampa Bay got on the board in the fourth inning on a Ben Zobrist solo home run. The Yankees shot back in their half of the inning on a Rodriguez sacrifice fly to knock in Nunez. The Rays clawed back in the sixth inning when Evan Longoria singled both Jose Lobaton and Desmond Jennings across the dish, followed by Matt Joyce grounding into a double play that got Zobrist home safely. They got no closer, losing 6-4, with the win going to Kuroda, the save tossed by Rafael Soriano as his fortieth of the season, and Moore was on the hook for the loss.

Up in Toronto, the Blue Jays host the Boston Red Sox. Jon Lester and Brandon Morrow are the inconsistent pitchers. Toronto busted things open in the seventh inning as Omar Vizquel singled home Rajai Davis and Adeiny Hechavarria hit a two-run home run to finish Vizquel's trip around. The Blue Jays struck again in the eighth inning as Colby Rasmus singled in Brett Lawrie, before scoring on a Moises Sierra single. This made it 5-0, the final, with Brandon Lyon in line for the win and Lester was dealt the loss.

Back in the States, the Miami Marlins host the Cincinnati Reds. Mat Latos and Ricky Nolasco are the veteran starters. Cincinnati started in second inning as Didi Gregorius singled home Todd Frazier. The Reds struck again in the fourth inning as Brandon Phillips grounded out to get Dioner Navarro in. Miami got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Greg Dobbs tripled to force in Giancarlo Stanton and Carlos Lee. Cincinnati took the lead back in the fifth inning on a Navarro single, scoring Joey Votto. The Reds added on in the sixth inning with Ryan Ludwick singling to plate Phillips. The Marlins got one back in the seventh inning as Donovan Solano hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Lee to dash home. Miami tied it in the eighth inning as Jose Reyes doubled to drive in Austin Kearns. Cincinnati took the lead in the eleventh inning as Ludwick singled to score Chris Heisey. This was good for a 5-4 win, with the win going to Logan Ondrusek, while Jonathan Broxton closed out for the save, and Carlos Zambrano was responsible for the loss.

Over in Texas, the Houston Astros host the Philadelphia Phillies. Roy Halladay faces a lesser foe in Jordan Lyles. Philadelphia began with a first inning Chase Utley sacrifice fly to get Jimmy Rollins home. Houston replied in the third inning as Scott Moore hit a two-run home run, also scoring Jimmy Parades. The Phillies tied it in the fifth inning as Juan Pierre doubled in Rollins, before taking the lead as Ryan Howard doubled both Pierre and Utley across the dish. The Astros replied on a sixth inning Carlos Corporan solo home run. Houston took the lead in the seventh inning on a 2-RBI Justin Maxwell double, driving in both Jose Altuve and Parades, followed by Matt Dominguez singling to plate both Brandon Laird and Maxwell. Philadelphia pulled closer in the eighth inning as Domonic Brown doubled to score both Carlos Ruiz and John Mayberry. They failed to tie, losing 7-6, with the win belonging to Wesley Wright, while Wilton Lopez turned the save, and Antonio Bastardo was credited with the loss.

To the north, the Milwaukee Brewers host the New York Mets. Chris Young and Wily Peralta are the back-of-the-rotation starters. Milwaukee led off in the fourth inning with back-to-back solo home runs by Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez. The Brewers added on in the sixth inning as Braun hit another solo shot. This made it 3-0, the eventual final, with the win going to Peralta, the save tossed by John Axford, and the loss was stuck on Young.

Backtracking to Kansas City, as the Royals host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Dan Haren and Will Smith are penciled in to pitch. Los Angeles opened in the first inning as Torii Hunter singled in Erick Aybar. The Angels extended the lead in the second inning as Mark Trumbo hit a three-run home run, sweeping in Vernon Wells and Alberto Callaspo. Kansas City shot back in the bottom of the second on a Jeff Francoeur groundout to get Salvador Perez home. The Royals got another in the third inning on a Tony Abreu solo home run. Kansas City pulled closer in the fourth inning as Francoeur singled, which combined with an error to bring in Billy Butler. The scoring ended here at 4-3, with Haren holding onto the win, Kevin Jepsen converting his spot save, and Smith was not freed from the loss.

Farther north, the Minnesota Twins host the Chicago White Sox. Jake Peavy and Scott Diamond are the reliable pitchers. Minnesota was first to score in the first inning as Joe Mauer hit a solo home run. Chicago took the lead in the third inning as Dewayne Wise hit a sacrifice fly to get Tyler Flowers home, followed by Kevin Youkilis doubling to knock in Gordon Beckham. The White Sox got another in the fourth inning as Dayan Viciedo doubled home Alex Rios. The Twins replied in the fifth inning as Alexi Casilla doubled to plate Trevor Plouffe. Chicago answered with a sixth inning Adam Dunn solo shot, followed by a two-run blast from Viciedo, also scoring Rios, a Wise sacrifice fly to get Alexei Ramirez in, a Youkilis single to give time for Flowers to dash home, and a Dunn single doing the same for Beckham. This was good for a 9-2 win, with Peavy earning the win and Diamond suffering the loss.

Speaking of Chicago, the Cubs host the Pittsburgh Pirates. Jeff Locke and Chris Volstad are the uninspiring starters. Chicago struck first in the first inning as Alfonso Soriano singled in Anthony Rizzo. Pittsburgh pulled ahead in the second inning with a two-run Rod Barajas home run, also scoring Clint Barmes, followed by Andrew McCutchen singling to score Starling Marte. The Pirates added on in the fifth inning with two-run Pedro Alvarez home run, sweeping in Gaby Sanchez, followed by Marte singling Barajas across the plate. The Cubs shot back in the bottom of the fifth as Joe Mather hit a solo home run, followed by a two-run Rizzo home run, driving in Darwin Barney, and a Welington Castillo single to get Soriano safely home. Pittsburgh extended their lead in the sixth inning as Alvarez went yard again, this time with a three-run home run, and he brought McCutchen and Sanchez with him. Chicago rallied ahead in the bottom of the sixth with Barney singling to give time for Luis Valbuena to get in, followed by a Rizzo grand slam, pushing in all of Bryan LaHair, Mather, and Barney. The Cubs added on in the eighth inning when Soriano doubled to get Barney safely across the plate, followed by David DeJesus singling to score both Tony Campana and Starlin Castro. This produced the 13-9 final, with the win going to Jeff Beliveau and the loss pinned on Jared Hughes.

Back to Texas, with the Rangers hosting the Seattle Mariners. Blake Beavan is mismatched with Matt Harrison. After a long rain delay, Texas got going in the fourth inning with an Adrian Beltre solo home run. The Rangers added on in the fifth inning as Mitch Moreland doubled home David Murphy. Seattle got on the board in the eighth inning on a Justin Smoak solo shot. They failed to tie the game, losing 2-1, with Harrison earning the win, Koji Uehara turning a spot save, and Beavan took an unlucky loss.

Northward to Cleveland, as the Indians host the Detroit Tigers. Rick Porcello and Ubaldo Jimenez are the overrated pitchers. Detroit began in the first inning with Brennan Boesch singling in Andy Dirks, and later Miguel Cabrera after an error. The Tigers added on with a third inning Delmon Young single to plate Cabrera. Cleveland got on the board in the fourth inning as Shin-Soo Choo singled both Russ Canzler and Jack Hannahan in. The Indians tied it in the fifth inning on a Canzler single to drive in Asdrubal Cabrera, before taking the lead as Lonnie Chisenhall grounded into a fielder's choice to bring in Michael Brantley. Cleveland added on in the sixth inning as Carlos Santana singled Asdrubal Cabrera around. Detroit retook the lead in the seventh inning on a three-run home run by Miguel Cabrera, sweeping in Omar Infante and Dirks. The Indians tied it in the ninth inning as Santana tripled to force in Jason Kipnis, before coming the final 90 feet to win the game as Chisenhall hit a single for a 7-6 final. Esmil Rogers was in line for the win while Jose Valverde was responsible for the loss.

Way west, the Oakland Athletics host the Baltimore Orioles. Randy Wolf and Daniel Straily are sent out to pitch. Oakland led off in the first inning with a two-run Josh Reddick home run, also scoring Collin Cowgill. Baltimore got on the board in the second inning as Matt Wieters hit a solo home run. The Orioles tied it in the third inning on a J.J. Hardy single to get Endy Chavez home. Baltimore took the lead on another Wieters solo shot in the fourth inning. The Orioles added on in the fifth inning as Mark Reynolds walked with the bases-loaded to force in Chris Davis. Baltimore struck again in the seventh inning as Manny Machado doubled to knock in Wieters, followed by Chavez singling to score both Reynolds and Machado. The Athletics pulled closer in the eighth inning as Stephen Drew went yard on a two-run home run, bringing Josh Donaldson with him. The Orioles padded the lead in the ninth inning with Robert Andino doubling Chavez around, followed by Davis singling to finish Andino's trip around. Oakland tried a ninth inning rally as Reddck singled Brandon Moss across the dish, but this only made it a 9-5 final. Brian Matusz was in line for the win, Jim Johnson cleaned up a mess for a save, and Straily was dinged for the loss.

Down in San Diego, the Padres host the Colorado Rockies. Alex White and Andrew Werner are the young starters. San Diego started in the first inning with a Yonder Alonso single to bring in Logan Forsythe. Colorado took the lead in the second inning as the pitcher White hit a three-run home run, sweeping in Chris Nelson and Andrew Brown. The Rockies added on in the third inning when Matt McBride hit a two-run home run, also scoring Brown. The Padres got one back in the bottom of the third as Will Venable hit a sacrifice fly to allow Forsythe to dash home. San Diego pulled closer in the fourth inning when Everth Cabrera grounded into a fielder's choice to give time for John Baker to score. The Padres rallied ahead in the fifth inning as Baker singled both Chase Headley and Alonso across the dish, followed by Andy Parrino singling in Cameron Maybin, and then Cabrera hit a 2-RBI double to plate both Baker and Parrino, before he scored on an error, and Headley hit a two-run home run, driving in Forsythe. Colorado pulled back in the eighth inning as McBride grounded into a fielder's choice that combined with an error to get Nelson home, before he was forced in by Dexter Fowler drawing a walk with the bases loaded, and then they tied the game as Rutledge hit a grand slam, pushing in all of DJ LeMahieu, Charlie Blackmon, and Fowler. San Diego walked off in the ninth inning, winning 12-11 as Alonso singled to knock in Cabrera. Joe Thatcher was credited with the win while Matt Belisle was on the hook for the loss.

Back east a bit, the Arizona Diamondbacks host the San Francisco Giants. Ryan Vogelsong and Patrick Corbin take the hill. San Francisco quickly scored in the first inning as Buster Posey singled Angel Pagan in. Arizona took the lead in the third inning as Justin Upton doubled both Adam Eaton and Aaron Hill home. The Giants retied it in the fourth inning as Brandon Belt doubled Posey safely home. The Diamondbacks regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a 3-RBI triple by the pitcher Corbin, sweeping in Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Ransom, and Gerardo Parra, followed by Hill doubling both Corbin and Eaton home. Arizona struck again in the sixth inning on an Upton solo home run. The Diamondbacks kept going in the seventh inning when Corbin singled Ryan Wheeler around, followed by Parra scoring on a passed ball. This ended the scoring at 10-2, with Corbin getting the win (and helping himself out with plenty of offense) while Vogelson took another loss.

Into California again, as the Los Angeles Dodgers host the St. Louis Cardinals. Adam Wainwright and Stephen Fife are called on to start. St. Louis established a lead in the first inning as Allen Craig doubled in Carlos Beltran, and Matt Holliday scored on a wild pitch. Los Angeles tied the game in the third inning on a two-run home run by Andre Ethier, also scoring Matt Treanor. The Cardinals rallied ahead in the twelfth inning with Jon Jay doubling home Matt Carpenter before scoring on a Craig single, followed by Yadier Molina walking with the bases loaded to force in Beltran. This was good enough for a 5-2 win, picked up by Shelby Miller, while Jason Motte tossed his thirty-fifth save of the year, and John Ely was pinned with the loss.

Finally, we end way east in Atlanta, as the Braves host the Washington Nationals. Gio Gonzalez and Mike Minor show alliteration while pacing the game. Atlanta started in the third inning as Chipper Jones singled in Michael Bourn and Freddie Freeman hit a sacrifice fly to get Jason Heyward home. Washington got on the board in the sixth inning as Ian Desmond singled to plate Bryce Harper. The Braves padded the lead in the seventh inning as Heyward grounded out to give Bourn time to score, followed by a 2-RBI Dan Uggla single to drive in both Reed Johnson and Jones. This was all for the scoring, with the final being 5-1. Minor earned the win and Gonzalez was stuck holding the loss.
