NHL 2019-20 - Day 23

It's another ten-game night in the league, beginning with...

The Columbus Blue Jackets hosting the Carolina Hurricanes. Petr Mrazek and Joonas Korpisalo are the lesser-known goalies. Columbus opened in the first period with an Alexandre Texier goal, his second of the season, made possible by Emil Bemstrom and Riley Nash. Carolina tied it on a Dougie Hamilton goal, his sixth of the year, via Warren Foegele and Jaccob Slavin. The Hurricanes took the lead with a Ryan Dzingel goal, his third of the season, with a lone assist by Martin Necas. Carolina added on with a Sebastian Aho goal, his third of the year, passed from Brett Pesce and Lucas Wallmark. The Blue Jackets got one back in the second period with a Ryan Murray goal, guided in by Boone Jenner and David Savard. Columbus tied it on a Sonny Milano goal, his second of the season, assisted by Savard and Murray. The Blue Jackets won 4-3 in overtime with a Cam Atkinson goal, his third of the year, with helpers from Pierre-Luc Dubois and Seth Jones. The three stars were Murray, Savard, and Atkinson.

East to New York, as the Rangers welcome the Buffalo Sabres. Carter Hutton and Henrik Lundqvist are in the blue paint. New York started in the first period with an unassisted Artemi Panarin goal, his fifth of the season. The Rangers added on with a Brett Howden goal, his second of the year, passed from Jesper Fast and Brendan Lemieux. New York extended the lead as Ryan Strome scored, thanks to Brady Skjei and Tony DeAngelo. Buffalo got on the board in the second period with a Marco Scandella goal, his second of the season, going in unassisted. The Rangers shot back with a DeAngelo goal, his fourth of the year, via Pavel Buchnevich and Skjei. The Sabres pulled back on a Vladimir Sobotka goal, made possible by Kyle Okposo and Marcus Johansson. New York countered in the third period with Strome's second of the game, with a lone helper from Howden. The Rangers capped it at 6-2 with a Chris Kreider goal, fueled by Adam Fox and Fast. The three stars went to Strome, Howden, and DeAngelo, while Skjei and Fast get the honorable mentions.

Over on Long Island, the New York Islanders bring in the Arizona Coyotes. Darcy Kuemper and Semyon Varlamov are the masked men. New York led off in the first period with a Derick Brassard goal, coming off of Ryan Pulock and Brock Nelson. Arizona tied it on a Michael Grabner goal, his second of the season, via Jakob Chychrun. The Islanders retook the lead in the second period with a Josh Bailey goal, his fourth of the year, assisted by Nick Leddy and Nelson. New York added on in the third period with an Anders Lee goal, his third of the season, made possible by Bailey and Devon Toews. The Coyotes got one back with a Conor Garland goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Chychrun and Phil Kessel. The Islanders iced it at 4-2 with a Scott Mayfield empty net goal, set up by Johnny Boychuk. The three stars were given to Bailey, Nelson, and Chychrun.

In Canada, the Montreal Canadiens host the San Jose Sharks. Aaron Dell is mismatched with Carey Price in goal. Montreal began in the first period with a Nick Cousins goal, courtesy of Nate Thompson. San Jose tied it on an Evander Kane power play goal, his fifth of the season, powered by Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl. The Sharks pulled ahead with another Kane power play goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year, with assists provided by Hertl and Brent Burns. San Jose added on with a Kevin Labanc goal, his third of the season, coming off of Hertl and Kane. The Sharks extended the lead as Melker Karlsson scored, thanks to Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. The Canadiens got one back with a Joel Armia goal, his fifth of the year, via Max Domi and Shea Weber. This stood for the eventual 4-2 final score, with the three stars being Kane, Hertl, and Dell (35 for 37 in saves).

Back stateside, the Nashville Predators welcome the Minnesota Wild. Alex Stalock and Pekka Rinne are in the blue paint. Nashville got going in the second period with a Miikka Salomaki goal, assisted by Colton Sissons and Roman Josi. The Predators added on with a Calle Jarnkrok goal, his second of the season, via Viktor Arvidsson and Ryan Johansen. Nashville extended the lead in the third period as Craig Smith scored, thanks to Nick Bonino and Rocco Grimaldi. The Predators iced it at 4-0 with a Sissons shorthanded goal, his fourth of the year, set up by Mattias Ekholm. The three stars were Rinne (26 save shutout), Sissons, and Salomaki.

Along to St. Louis, as the Blues bring in the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Quick and Jordan Binnington patrol the creases. Los Angeles struck first in the first period with a Jeff Carter goal, his second of the season, passed from Blake Lizotte and Drew Doughty. St. Louis tied it with a Vince Dunn power play goal, his second of the year, powered by Jaden Schwartz and Colton Parayko. The Kings retook the lead in the second period on an Alex Iafallo goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Sean Walker and Anze Kopitar. The Blues tied it again with an Alex Pietrangelo power play goal, his fourth of the year, with assists provided by David Perron and Ryan O'Reilly. St. Louis took the lead with a Robert Thomas goal, coming off of Zach Sanford and Tyler Bozak. The Blues added on with a Brayden Schenn power play goal in the third period, his seventh of the season, made possible by Schwartz and Parayko. St. Louis iced it at 5-2 with a Schenn empty net goal, his second of the game and eighth of the year, set up by Alexander Steen. The three stars were Schenn, Schwartz, and Parayko.

Down in Dallas, the Stars host the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Ben Bishop tend the twines. Dallas kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Denis Gurianov goal, assisted by Andrew Cogliano. The Stars added on with another Gurianov goal, passed from Taylor Fedun and Jamie Oleksiak. Anaheim got on the board in the second period with a Max Comtois power play goal, powered by Nick Ritchie and Sam Steel. This only made it 2-1, the eventual final, with the three stars handed to Gurianov, Bishop (29 for 30 in saves), and Gibson (27 for 29 in saves).

Back north, the Chicago Blackhawks welcome the Philadelphia Flyers. Brian Elliott and Robin Lehner play in goal. Philadelphia drew first blood in the first period with an Oskar Lindblom goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Travis Konecny. The Flyers added on with a Claude Giroux goal, assisted by Travis Sanheim and James van Riemsdyk. Chicago got on the board with a Brandon Saad goal in the third period, his third of the year, via Andrew Shaw and Kirby Dach. Philadelphia replied with a Kevin Hayes goal, his third of the season, passed from Scott Laughton and Joel Farabee. The Flyers extended the lead as van Riemsdyk scored an unassisted goal. This stood for a 4-1 win, with the three stars being van Riemsdyk, Elliott (23 for 24 in saves), and Giroux.

To Alberta, where the Edmonton Oilers bring in the Washington Capitals. Braden Holtby and Mikko Koskinen receive the starting nods in goal. Edmonton cracked the scoresheet in the first period with a Darnell Nurse goal, his second of the season, via Leon Draisaitl and Zack Kassian. Washington tied it on an unassisted Jakub Vrana goal, his fourth of the year. The Capitals took the lead with an Alex Ovechkin goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Jonas Siegenthaler and John Carlson. Washington added on with an Ovechkin power play goal, his second of the game and ninth of the year, powered by Tom Wilson and Vrana. The Oilers got one back with a Draisaitl goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Connor McDavid and Kassian. Edmonton tied it with a McDavid goal, his sixth of the year, with helpers from James Neal and Alex Chiasson. The Oilers won 4-3 in overtime on a Draisaitl goal, his second of the game and eighth of the campaign, with a lone assist by McDavid. The three stars were Draisaitl, McDavid, and Ovechkin, while Vrana and Kassian get the honorable mentions.

Also in the province, the Calgary Flames host the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and David Rittich guard the cages. Calgary was first to score in the first period with an Austin Czarnik power play goal, his second of the season, powered by T.J. Brodie and Milan Lucic. Florida tied it on a Jonathan Huberdeau goal, his fifth of the year, fueled by Aleksander Barkov. The Flames retook the lead with a Matthew Tkachuk goal, his third of the season, via Michael Frolik and Brodie. The Panthers tied it on a MacKenzie Weegar goal, his third of the year, with a lone helper by Barkov. Calgary pulled ahead again with a Tkachuk goal, his second of the game and fourth of the season, passed from Frolik and Mark Giordano. The Flames added on with a Giordano goal, his third of the year, helped along by Elias Lindholm and Sean Monahan. Florida got one back with a Josh Brown goal, guided in by Keith Yandle and Barkov. The Panthers tied it on an Evgenii Dadonov goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Huberdeau and Barkov. Florida surged ahead on a Mark Pysyk goal, courtesy of Denis Malgin and Frank Vatrano. Calgary tied it as Sam Bennett scored his second of the year, thanks to Andrew Mangiapane and Travis Hamonic. The tie went to a shootout, where Monahan and Tkachuk gave the Flames a 6-5 win. The three stars were Tkachuk, Giordano, and Barkov, while Monahan, Brodie, Frolik, and Huberdeau get the honorable mentions.
