NHL 2019-20 - Day 24

Six games on this Friday night, beginning with...

The Vegas Golden Knights hosting the Colorado Avalanche. Philipp Grubauer and Marc-Andre Fleury protect the nets. Colorado started in the first period with a Pierre-Edouard Bellemare goal, his third of the season, going in unassisted. Vegas tied it on a William Karlsson goal, his second of the season, via Reilly Smith. The Avalanche retook the lead on a Nazem Kadri goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Colin Wilson and Ian Cole. Colorado added on in the second period with a Cale Makar goal, passed from J.T. Compher and Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche extended the lead on a Kadri power play goal, his second of the game and fifth of the year, powered by MacKinnon. Colorado padded the lead as Matt Calvert scored his second of the season, thanks to Bellemare and Matt Nieto. The Avalanche kept going with another Calvert goal in the third period, his second of the game and third of the year coming shorthanded, set up by Bellemare. The three stars of the 6-1 game were Bellemare, Calvert, and MacKinnon, while Kadri gets an honorable mention.

Back east, the Toronto Maple Leafs welcome the San Jose Sharks. Martin Jones and Frederik Andersen play in goal. San Jose opened in the first period with a Kevin Labanc goal, his fourth of the season, guided in by Brent Burns and Tomas Hertl. Toronto tied it with a Jake Muzzin goal in the second period, his second of the year, via Jason Spezza and Ilya Mikheyev. The Maple Leafs took the lead with a Morgan Rielly goal, his third of the season, passed from William Nylander. Toronto added on with a Mikheyev empty net goal, his fourth of the year, set up by Mitchell Marner. The Maple Leafs extended the lead as Auston Matthews scored his ninth of the campaign, thanks to Marner. The three stars were Mihkeyev, Rielly, and Marner.

Stateside, the New Jersey Devils bring in the Arizona Coyotes. Antti Raanta and MacKenzie Blackwood are in goal. New Jersey led off in the first period with a Sami Vatanen goal, his second of the season, assisted by Jack Hughes and P.K. Subban. The Devils added on with a Hughes power play goal, his second of the year, powered by Taylor Hall and Vatanen. Arizona got on the board with a Nick Schmaltz goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Jason Demers. The Coyotes tied it in the second period on a shorthanded goal by Michael Grabner, his third of the year, set up by Demers. New Jersey reclaimed the lead with a Pavel Zacha goal, his second of the season, helped along by Hughes and Matt Tennyson. Arizona retied it on an Ekman-Larsson goal, his second of the year, with a lone assist from Lawson Crouse. The Coyotes gained the lead in the third period with a Barrett Hayton goal, courtesy of Schmaltz. Arizona iced it at 5-3 with an empty net goal by Clayton Keller, via Phil Kessel and Demers. The three stars were given to Ekman-Larsson, Hughes, and Schmaltz, while Demers and Vatanen get the honorable mentions.

Back in Canada, the Ottawa Senators host the New York Islanders. Thomas Greiss and Anders Nilsson draw the starts in goal. Ottawa began in the first period with a Tyler Ennis goal, courtesy of Thomas Chabot and Connor Brown. New York tied it on a Nick Leddy goal, via Matt Martin and Johnny Boychuk. The Islanders took the lead as Leddy scored on a power play penalty shot for his second goal of the game. New York added on with a Matt Martin goal, his second of the year, assisted by Nick Leddy and Cal Clutterbuck. The Islanders extended the lead as Derick Brassard scored his second of the season, thanks to Mathew Barzal and Devon Toews. Craig Anderson replaced Nilsson in goal. The Senators got one back in the third period with an Ennis power play goal, his second of the game, powered by Logan Brown and Anthony Duclair. The final remained at 4-2, with the three stars given to Leddy, Martin, and Ennis.

To Detroit, where the Red Wings welcome the Buffalo Sabres. Linus Ullmark and Jimmy Howard are in the blue paint. Buffalo got going in the second period with a Jake McCabe goal, coming off of Sam Reinhart and Jack Eichel. The Sabres added on with a Reinhart power play goal in the third period, his fifth of the season, powered by Victor Olofsson and Eichel. The final stood at 2-0, with the three stars awarded to Ullmark (40 save shutout), Reinhart, and Eichel.

Finally, the Vancouver Canucks bring in the Washington Capitals. Ilya Samsonov and Jacob Markstrom are between the pipes. Washington struck first in the first period with an Evgeny Kuznetsov goal, his fourth of the season, via Jakub Vrana. Vancouver tied it with a Brock Boeser power play goal, his third of the year, powered by Quinn Hughes and Bo Horvat. The Canucks took the lead with a shorthanded Tim Schaller goal, his second of the season, set up by Jay Beagle. Vancouver added on in the second period with an Elias Pettersson goal, his third of the year, passed from J.T. Miller and Boeser. The Canucks extended the lead as Schaller scored his second of the game and third of the season, going in unassisted. Vancouver padded the lead with a Jake Virtanen goal, his second of the year, with helpers from Horvat and Micheal Ferland. The Capitals got one back with a Kuznetsov goal, his second of the game and fifth of the season, assisted by Lars Eller and Radko Gudas. Washington got closer in the third period with a shorthanded Eller goal, his fourth of the year, with a lone assist by Garnet Hathaway. The Capitals pulled closer with a Michal Kempny goal, his second of the season, fueled by Carl Hagelin. Washington tied it on another Kempny goal, his second of the game and third of the year, with helpers from Brendan Leipsic and Travis Boyd. The tie went to a shootout, where T.J. Oshie and Nicklas Backstrom overwhelmed Pettersson for the 6-5 shootout win. The three stars were Kempny, Kuznetsov, and Schaller, while Eller, Boeser, and Horvat earn the honorable mentions.
