NHL 2019-20 - Day 7

Eight games on tonight to complete a week of the season. First up...

The New York Islanders host the Edmonton Oilers. Mikko Koskinen and Semyon Varlamov are the goalies. New York opened in the first period with a shorthanded Anthony Beauvillier goal, his second of the season, set up by Leo Komarov. Edmonton tied it on an unassisted James Neal goal, his third of the year. The Oilers took the lead with another Neal goal, his second of the game and fourth of the season, a power play goal powered by Connor McDavid and Darnell Nurse. Edmonton added on in the second period with a Neal power play goal, completing his hat trick on his fifth of the year, with assists provided by Leon Draisaitl and McDavid. The Oilers extended the lead as Zack Kassian scored his third of the season, thanks to Draisaitl and McDavid. Edmonton padded the lead with a Neal goal in the third period, his fourth of the game and sixth of the year, via Tomas Jurco and Oscar Klefbom. The Islanders got one back with a Matt Martin goal, helped along by Noah Dobson and Casey Cizikas. This only made it 5-2, the final, with the three stars awarded to Neal, McDavid, and Draisaitl.

Along to Pittsburgh, where the Penguins welcome the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Matt Murray are in goal. Pittsburgh started in the first period with a Sidney Crosby goal, passed from Jake Guentzel and Kris Letang. Winnipeg tied it on a Ville Heinola goal, courtesy of Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine. The Jets took the lead with an unassisted Nikolaj Ehlers goal. Winnipeg added on in the second period with a Tucker Poolman goal, coming off of Laine and Scheifele. The Jets extended the lead as Neal Pionk scored his second of the campaign, thanks to Laine and Scheifele, both of whom earned sock tricks. This stood as the eventual 4-1 final score, with the three stars handed to Hellebuyck (37 for 38 in saves), Laine, and Scheifele.

Over in DC, the Washington Capitals host the Dallas Stars. Ben Bishop and Braden Holtby are the masked men. Washington led off in the first period with an Evgeny Kuznetsov goal, made possible by Jonas Siegenthaler. Dallas tied it on a Roope Hintz goal in the second period, his fourth of the season, assisted by Jamie Oleksiak. The Capitals retook the lead with a John Carlson goal, guided in by Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. The Stars evened the score in the third period with an Alexander Radulov goal, via Esa Lindell and Jamie Benn. Dallas took the lead with a Nick Caamano goal, helped along by Andrew Cogliano and Tyler Seguin. Washington retied it on a Backstrom goal, passed from Tom Wilson and Carlson. The Stars won 4-3 win a Seguin goal in overtime, his second of the year, set up by Radulov. The three stars went to Seguin, Radulov, and Backstrom, while Carlson gets an honorable mention.

Down in Florida, the Panthers bring in the Carolina Hurricanes. James Reimer and Sergei Bobrovsky are the veterans in goal. Carolina began in the first period with a Jordan Staal goal, fueled by Brock McGinn and Jake Gardiner. The Hurricanes added on with a Teuvo Teravainen goal, passed from Haydn Fleury and Nino Niederreiter. Carolina extended the lead as Dougie Hamilton scored his second of the season, with the help of Andrei Svechnikov and Staal. The Hurricanes padded the lead on a Ryan Dzingel power play goal, powered by Teravainen and Svechnikov. Sam Montembeault replaced Bobrovsky in goal to start the second period. Carolina kept going with another Dzingel goal, made possible by Martin Necas and Fleury. Florida got on the board with a MacKenzie Weegar goal, guided in by Mike Hoffman and Aleksander Barkov. The Panthers got closer in the third period with a Keith Yandle power play goal, with helpers from Hoffman and Brett Connolly. Florida chipped closer on an Evgenii Dadonov power play goal, courtesy of Jonathan Huberdeau and Barkov. The Hurricanes iced it at 6-3 with a Sebastian Aho empty net goal, set up by Jaccob Slavin. The three stars were Dzingel, Teravainen, and Staal, while Svechnikov, Fleury, Hoffman, and Barkov get the honorable mentions.

Back north, the Detroit Red Wings host the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Jimmy Howard are between the pipes. Detroit got going in the second period with a Filip Hronek goal, via Andreas Athanasiou and Dylan Larkin. Anaheim tied it on a Rickard Rakell goal in the third period, passed from Hampus Lindholm and Jakob Silfverberg. The Ducks took the lead with a Nick Ritchie goal, courtesy of Derek Grant and Brendan Guhle. Anaheim added on with a Silfverberg goal, assisted by Devin Shore and Ryan Getzlaf. The final held at 3-1, with the three stars being Silfverberg, Gibson (31 for 32 in saves), and Ritchie.

To Nashville, as the Predators welcome the San Jose Sharks. Martin Jones and Pekka Rinne man the creases. Nashville struck first in the first period with a Roman Josi goal, courtesy of Colton Sissons and Ryan Ellis. The Predators added on with a Josi power play goal in the second period, going in unassisted. San Jose got on the board with an Evander Kane power play goal, powered by Logan Couture and Brent Burns. Nashville replied in the third period with a Kyle Turris goal, made possible by Rocco Grimaldi. The Predators extended the lead as Filip Forsberg scored his third of the season, thanks to Matt Duchene and Mikael Granlund. The Sharks pulled one back with a Burns goal, fueled by Lean Bergmann and Dylan Gambrell. Nashville iced it at 5-2 with a Dante Fabbro empty net goal, set up by Ryan Johansen. The three stars belonged to Josi, Burns, and Turris.

Northwest to Calgary, where the Flames bring in the Los Angeles Kings. Jack Campbell and David Rittich are set to start in goal. Los Angeles was first to score in the first period with a Tyler Toffoli goal, coming off of Ilya Kovalchuk and Drew Doughty. The Kings added on with a Sean Walker goal, passed from Blake Lizotte and Toffoli. Los Angeles extended the lead as Kovalchuk scored in the second period, thanks to Adrian Kempe and Doughty. Calgary got on the board with an unassisted Matthew Tkachuk goal. The Flames got closer with a Noah Hanifin goal, made possible by Tkachuk and T.J. Brodie. Calgary evened it with a Tkachuk goal, his second of the game, courtesy of Rasmus Andersson and Johnny Gaudreau. The Kings won 4-3 in overtime with a Doughty power play goal, his second of the campaign, powered by Anze Kopitar and Kovalchuk. The three stars belonged to Doughty, Tkachuk, and Kovalchuk, while Toffoli picked up an honorable mention.

Finally, the Vegas Golden Knights host the Boston Bruins. Tuukka Rask and Marc-Andre Fleury tend the twines. Vegas kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Mark Stone power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Max Pacioretty and Cody Glass. The Golden Knights added on with a Reilly Smith goal, his third of the year, courtesy of Jonathan Marchessault and William Karlsson. Boston got on the board with a David Pastrnak goal, via Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. The Bruins tied it with a Marchand power play goal, his second of the season, with assists provided by Pastrnak and Torey Krug. Boston took the lead with a Marchand goal, his second of the game and third of the year, helped along by Pastrnak in the second period. Vegas got one back with a Pacioretty power play goal in the third period, with helpers from Shea Theodore and Stone. This only made it 4-3, the final, with the three stars being Marchand, Pastrnak, and Krug, while Stone and Pacioretty get the honorable mentions.
