NHL 2019-20 - Day 46

We've got the maximum 15 games to kick off this weekend. First up...

The Minnesota Wild host the Carolina Hurricanes. James Reimer and Devan Dubnyk are the goalies. Carolina started in the first period with a Joel Edmundson goal, his second of the season, via Martin Necas and Nino Niederreiter. The Hurricanes added on with a Brock McGinn goal, his second of the year, coming off of Teuvo Teravainen and Jordan Martinook. Minnesota got on the board in the second period with a Luke Kunin goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Jonas Brodin and Jordan Greenway. Carolina replied with a Warren Foegele goal, his third of the year, passed from Ryan Dzingel and Jordan Staal. The Wild pulled back with a shorthanded Zach Parise goal, his sixth of the season, set up by Matt Dumba and Mikko Koivu. Minnesota tied it as Carson Soucy scored, thanks to Victor Rask. The Hurricanes won 4-3 in overtime with an Andrei Svechnikov goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Dougie Hamilton. The three stars were Svechnikov, Foegele, and Soucy.

Down in Arizona, the Coyotes welcome the Calgary Flames. David Rittich and Darcy Kuemper protect the nets. Arizona got going in the second period with a Derek Stepan goal, his third of the season, going in unassisted. The Coyotes added on with a Carl Soderberg goal, his sixth of the year, courtesy of Lawson Crouse and Phil Kessel. Arizona iced it at 3-0 in the third period with a Crouse empty net goal, his fourth of the campaign, an unassisted tally. The three stars were Kuemper (38 save shutout), Stepan, and Crouse.

Way east to Tampa Bay, as the Lightning bring in the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Andrei Vasilevskiy tend the twines. Winnipeg opened in the first period on a Mathieu Perreault goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Josh Morrissey and Tucker Poolman. Tampa Bay tied it with a Victor Hedman goal, his fourth of the year, with a lone helper by Steven Stamkos. The Jets retook the lead in the second period with a Jack Roslovic goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Andrew Copp and Blake Wheeler. Winnipeg added on with a Nikolaj Ehlers power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Kyle Connor and Morrissey. The Lightning got one back in the third period with a Stamkos goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Hedman and Anthony Cirelli. The Jets shot back with a Connor empty net goal, his seventh of the year, set up by Wheeler and Luca Sbisa. Tampa Bay pulled back on a Cirelli goal, his second of the campaign, with assists from Nikita Kucherov and Ryan McDonagh. The final stayed at 4-3, with the three stars being Connor, Wheeler, and Morrissey, while Stamkos, Cirelli, and Hedman get the honorable mentions.

Crossing the country, the Los Angeles Kings host the Vegas Golden Knights. Malcolm Subban and Jonathan Quick receive the starting nods in goal. Los Angeles led off in the first period with a shorthanded Blake Lizotte goal, his second of the season, set up by Adrian Kempe and Drew Doughty. The Kings added on with a Doughty power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Alex Iafallo and Anze Kopitar. Vegas got on the board in the second period with a Max Pacioretty goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Reilly Smith and William Karlsson. Los Angeles replied with a Nikolai Prokhorkin goal, fueled by Kyle Clifford and Matt Luff. The Golden Knights chipped back with a Jonathan Marchessault goal, his fifth of the year, helped along by Cody Eakin. Vegas tied it on a Karlsson goal, his sixth of the season, courtesy of Pacioretty and Shea Theodore. The Kings regained the lead with a Jeff Carter goal in the third period, his sixth of the year, with a lone helper by Matt Roy. This made it 4-3, the final, with the three stars being Doughty, Carter, and Karlsson, while Pacioretty gets an honorable mention.

Up in Alberta, the Edmonton Oilers welcome the Dallas Stars. Ben Bishop and Mikko Koskinen are the masked men. Dallas began in the first period with a Jason Dickinson goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Tyler Seguin and Roman Polak. Edmonton tied it with an unassisted Jujhar Khaira goal, his second of the year. The Oilers took the lead with a Leon Draisaitl goal, his sixteenth of the season, coming off of Connor McDavid and Darnell Nurse. The Stars retied it on a Miro Heiskanen goal, his fifth of the year, passed from Jamie Benn and Dickinson. Edmonton retook the lead on a Khaira goal, his second of the game and third of the season, via McDavid and Oscar Klefbom. Anton Khudobin replaced Bishop in goal. The Oilers added on with an Ethan Bear power play goal, his third of the year, powered by McDavid and Draisaitl. Dallas got one back in the third period with a Blake Comeau goal, his second of the season, fueled by Andrew Cogliano and Radek Faksa. The Stars evened it as Seguin scored his fifth of the year, thanks to Heiskanen and the goalie Khudobin. Dallas won 5-4 in overtime on a Benn goal, his second of the campaign, set up by Seguin and Esa Lindell. The three stars belonged to Benn, Seguin, and McDavid, while Khaira, Draisaitl, Heiskanen, and Dickinson get the honorable mentions.

At the usual times, the Pittsburgh Penguins bring in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Kasimir Kaskisuo and Tristan Jarry are the backups in goal. Pittsburgh drew first blood in the first period with a Jake Guentzel power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Alex Galchenyuk and Evgeni Malkin. The Penguins added on with a Malkin goal, his third of the year, via Guentzel and Bryan Rust. Pittsburgh extended the lead in the second period as Dominik Kahun scored his fourth of the season, courtesy of John Marino and Rust. The Penguins padded the lead on a Kahun goal, his second of the game and fifth of the year, helped along by Brandon Tanev and Jack Johnson. Pittsburgh continued with a Jared McCann goal, his seventh of the season, coming off of Kahun and Tanev. Toronto got on the board with a Jason Spezza goal, his second of the year, guided in by Nic Petan and Tyson Barrie. The Penguins replied in the third period with a shorthanded Rust goal, his sixth of the season, set up by Teddy Blueger. This made it 6-1, the final, with the three stars belonging to Kahun, Rust, and Malkin, while Guentzel and Tanev get the honorable mentions.

Down in Florida, the Panthers host the New York Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist and Sergei Bobrovsky are the goalies. Florida struck first in the first period with a Mike Hoffman power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by Keith Yandle and Jonathan Huberdeau. New York tied it on a Ryan Strome goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Jesper Fast and Ryan Lindgren. The Panthers retook the lead with an Evgenii Dadonov power play goal, his ninth of the season, with assists provided by Huberdeau and Yandle. The Rangers tied it again with an Artemi Panarin goal, his ninth of the year, fueled by Strome and Libor Hajek. New York took the lead in the second period with a Tony DeAngelo goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of Panarin and Greg McKegg. Florida evened it on a Brett Connolly goal, his seventh of the year, passed from Brian Boyle. The Panthers pulled ahead on Dadonov's second of the game and tenth of the season, assisted by Yandle and Huberdeau. This produced the eventual 4-3 final score, with the three stars being Dadonov, Huberdeau, and Yandle, while Panarin and Strome earn the honorable mentions.

Back north, the Montreal Canadiens welcome the New Jersey Devils. MacKenzie Blackwood faces former teammate Keith Kinkaid in goal. Montreal cracked the scoresheet in the first period with a Brendan Gallagher goal, his ninth of the season, made possible by Jeff Petry and Tomas Tatar. New Jersey tied it on a Nikita Gusev goal, his fifth of the year, fueled by Blake Coleman and Travis Zajac. The Canadiens retook the lead with a Cale Fleury goal, with a lone assist by Phillip Danault. Montreal added on with a Nick Suzuki power play goal, his fifth of the season, powered by Max Domi and Shea Weber. The Devils got one back with a shorthanded Nico Hischier goal, his third of the year, set up by Pavel Zacha. New Jersey tied it with a Wayne Simmonds power play goal in the third period, his fourth of the season, with assists provided by Taylor Hall and Jack Hughes. The Devils won 4-3 in overtime on a Kyle Palmieri goal, his seventh of the year, a power play goal, with helpers from Hall and Hischier. The three stars were Hischier, Hall, and Palmieri.

Back stateside, the Philadelphia Flyers bring in the New York Islanders. Thomas Greiss and Brian Elliott are between the pipes. Philadelphia was first to score in the first period with a Sean Couturier goal, his sixth of the season, courtesy of Oskar Lindblom. The Flyers added on with an Ivan Provorov power play goal, his fourth of the year, powered by Couturier and Matt Niskanen. Philadelphia extended the lead in the second period as Lindblom scored his ninth of the season, thanks to Joel Farabee and Provorov. New York got on the board in the third period with an Anthony Beauvillier goal, his fifth of the year, fueled by Derick Brassard and Brock Nelson. The Islanders got closer with a Mathew Barzal power play goal, his ninth of the season, with assists provided by Nelson and Brassard. New York tied it on another Beauvillier goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year, going in unassisted. The Islanders won 4-3 in the shootout with tallies by Jordan Eberle and Barzal. The three stars were Beauvillier, Barzal, and Brassard, while Nelson, Provorov, Couturier, and Lindblom get the honorable mentions.

Along to Boston, as the Bruins host the Washington Capitals. Braden Holtby and Jaroslav Halak are set to start in goal. Boston kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Charlie Coyle goal, his fourth of the season, assisted by Danton Heinen and Charlie McAvoy. Washington tied it on a Travis Boyd goal, via John Carlson and Brendan Leipsic. The Bruins took the lead back in the second period with a David Pastrnak goal, his seventh of the year, passed from McAvoy and David Krejci. The Capitals tied it in the third period with a T.J. Oshie goal, his tenth of the season, coming off of Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom. The Capitals won 2-1 in a shootout, with Backstrom and Jakub Vrana overpowering Coyle. The three stars were Backstrom, Coyle, and McAvoy.

Over in Buffalo, the Sabres welcome the Ottawa Senators. Craig Anderson and Linus Ullmark are in the creases. Buffalo dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Jack Eichel goal, his ninth of the season, courtesy of Sam Reinhart and Rasmus Dahlin. Ottawa tied it on an Anthony Duclair power play goal, his seventh of the year, powered by Logan Brown and Thomas Chabot. The Sabres retook the lead with another Eichel goal, his second of the game and tenth of the season, via Victor Olofsson and Reinhart. The Senators retied it in the third period with a Tyler Ennis goal, his fifth of the year, made possible by Ron Hainsey and Vladislav Namestnikov. Buffalo retook the lead when Eichel completed his hat trick with his eleventh of the season, thanks to Jeff Skinner. The Sabres iced it at 4-2 with an empty net goal by Eichel, his fourth of the game and twelfth of the year, going in unassisted. The three stars were Eichel, Reinhart, and Skinner.

Southwest to Nashville, where the Predators bring in the Chicago Blackhawks. Robin Lehner and Pekka Rinne are set to start in goal. Chicago led off in the first period with an Erik Gustafsson goal, his second of the season, with a lone helper by Jonathan Toews. The Blackhawks added on with a Dominik Kubalik goal, his fifth of the year, guided in by Kirby Dach. Chicago extended the lead in the second period as Brent Seabrook scored his second of the season, with the help of Patrick Kane and Dylan Strome. The Blackhawks padded the lead on a David Kampf goal, his fourth of the year, courtesy of Olli Maatta and Andrew Shaw. Juuse Saros replaced Rinne in goal. Nashville got on the board in the third period with a Roman Josi goal, his sixth of the season, with a lone assist from Matt Duchene. Chicago countered with a Kane goal, his tenth of the year, made possible by Alex DeBrincat. The Blackhawks kept going with an Alex Nylander goal, his third of the season, fueled by Toews and Brandon Saad. Chicago continued with another Nylander goal, his second of the game and fourth of the year, helped along by Saad. The Predators got one back on Josi's second of the game and seventh of the campaign, assisted by Kyle Turris and Ryan Ellis. This only made it 7-2, the final, with the three stars given to Nylander, Kane, and Josi, while Toews and Saad get the honorable mentions.

Next up, the St. Louis Blues host the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Jordan Binnington guard the cages. Anaheim began in the first period with a Ryan Getzlaf goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Max Jones and Rickard Rakell. The Ducks added on with a Derek Grant goal, his third of the year, via Nicolas Deslauriers. St. Louis got on the board in the second period with a Vince Dunn goal, his third of the season, passed from Zach Sanford and Robert Bortuzzo. Anaheim replied with a shorthanded and unassisted Grant goal, his second of the game and fourth of the year. The Ducks iced it at 4-1 in the third period with a Grant empty net goal, completing his hat trick on his fifth of the campaign, set up by Getzlaf. The three stars were Grant, Gibson (37 for 38 in saves), and Getzlaf.

Northwest to Vancouver, where the Canucks welcome the Colorado Avalanche. Antoine Bibeau is mismatched with Thatcher Demko in goal. Colorado opened in the first period with a Pierre-Edouard Bellemare goal, his fourth of the season, passed from Erik Johnson and Nikita Zadorov. Vancouver tied it on an Adam Gaudette power play goal, his third of the year, powered by Josh Leivo and Alexander Edler. The Avalanche retook the lead with a Nathan MacKinnon power play goal in the second period, his twelfth of the season, with assists provided by Cale Makar and Andre Burakovsky. Colorado added on with a Nazem Kadri goal, his seventh of the year, guided in by Makar and J.T. Compher. The Canucks got one back with another Gaudette power play goal, his second of the game and fourth of the season, made possible by Sven Baertschi and Tanner Pearson. The Avalanche countered in the third period with a Burakovsky goal, his eighth of the year, assisted by MacKinnon and Makar. Vancouver got one back with an Edler goal, his fourth of the season, with helpers from Quinn Hughes and J.T. Miller. The Canucks tied it on a Brock Boeser goal, his ninth of the year, coming off of Elias Pettersson and Hughes. Colorado won 5-4 in overtime with a MacKinnon goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the campaign, set up by Makar and Compher. The three stars were MacKinnon, Makar, and Gaudette, while Burakovsky, Compher, Edler, and Hughes get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks bring in the Detroit Red Wings. Jimmy Howard and Martin Jones are the veterans in goal. San Jose started in the first period with a Kevin Labanc goal, his sixth of the season, courtesy of Logan Couture and Radim Simek. The Sharks added on in the second period with a Marc-Edouard Vlasic goal, his third of the year, via Couture and Labanc. Detroit got on the board with an Andreas Athanasiou goal, his fourth of the season, coming off of Robby Fabbri and Joe Hicketts. The Red Wings tied it on a Taro Hirose goal, made possible by Brendan Perlini and Madison Bowey. San Jose regained the lead with an Erik Karlsson power play goal, his second of the year, powered by Labanc and Couture. Detroit tied it in the third period with another Athanasiou goal, his second of the game and fifth of the season, helped along by Valtteri Filppula and Fabbri. The tie went to a shootout, where Labanc's lone tally decided the contest 4-3 for the Sharks. The three stars were Labanc, Couture, and Athanasiou, while Fabbri gets an honorable mention.
