NHL 2019-20 - Day 59

Twelve games on for a Black Friday slate made of mostly matinees. First up...

The Boston Bruins host the New York Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist and Jaroslav Halak are the veterans in goal. New York led off in the first period with a Pavel Buchnevich goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Tony DeAngelo and Jacob Trouba. The Rangers added on in the second period with a Filip Chytil goal, his eighth of the year, courtesy of Ryan Strome and Artemi Panarin. Boston tied it on a Sean Kuraly goal, his second of the season, via Jake DeBrusk and Brandon Carlo. The Bruins tied it in the third period with a David Pastrnak goal, his twenty-fourth of the year, assisted by David Krejci and DeBrusk. Boston won 3-2 in overtime with a Krejci goal, his fifth of the campaign, made possible by Pastrnak and the goalie Halak. The three stars were Krejci, Pastrnak, and DeBrusk.

Way out west, the Anaheim Ducks welcome the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and John Gibson tend the twines. Winnipeg got going in the second period with a Neal Pionk power play goal, his third of the season, powered by Blake Wheeler and Patrik Laine. The Jets added on with a Nikolaj Ehlers goal, his twelfth of the year, courtesy of Wheeler and Josh Morrissey. Winnipeg extended the lead as Kyle Connor scored his tenth of the campaign in the third period, thanks to Mark Scheifele and Laine. This stood for a 3-0 win, with the three stars awarded to Hellebuyck (24 save shutout), Wheeler, and Laine.

Back east, the Buffalo Sabres bring in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Michael Hutchinson and Linus Ullmark are in the creases. Toronto began in the first period with a John Tavares goal, his eighth of the season, coming off of Ilya Mikheyev. The Maple Leafs added on in the second period with another Tavares goal, his second of the game and ninth of the year, with a lone helper by Kasperi Kapanen. Buffalo got on the board with a Jeff Skinner goal, his tenth of the season, assisted by Johan Larsson and Brandon Montour. The Sabres tied it on a Jack Eichel goal, his fifteenth of the year, via Zach Bogosian. Buffalo took the lead on a Casey Mittelstadt goal, his fourth of the season, fueled by Marco Scandella and Jimmy Vesey. The Sabres extended the lead as Victor Olofsson scored his tenth of the year, thanks to Eichel and Scandella. Toronto got one back in the third period on a Dmytro Timashov goal, his second of the season, helped along by Jason Spezza and Morgan Rielly. Buffalo responded with a Vesey goal, his third of the year, going in unassisted. The Maple Leafs chipped back on a Kapanen goal, his eighth of the season, with helpers from Nic Petan and Justin Holl. The Sabres iced it at 6-4 with an Eichel empty net goal, his second of the game and sixteenth of the year, set up by Rasmus Ristolainen. The three stars were Eichel, Vesey, and Tavares, while Kapanen and Scandella get the honorable mentions.

Over in Chicago, the Blackhawks host the Colorado Avalanche. Pavel Francouz and Corey Crawford draw the starts in goal. Colorado opened in the first period with a Nathan MacKinnon goal, his sixteenth of the season, with a lone assist by J.T. Compher. The Avalanche added on with a Ryan Graves goal, his third of the year, passed from Matt Nieto and MacKinnon. Chicago got on the board with a Zack Smith goal, made possible by Ryan Carpenter. Colorado shot back with a Cale Makar power play goal, his eighth of the season, powered by MacKinnon and Compher. The Avalanche extended the lead in the second period on a Valeri Nichushkin goal, his second of the year, going in unassisted. Colorado padded the lead with a Compher goal, his third of the season, guided in by MacKinnon. The Blackhawks got one back as Patrick Kane scored his thirteenth of the year, thanks to Jonathan Toews and Brandon Saad. This only made it 5-2, the eventual final, with the three stars being MacKinnon, Compher, and Francouz (34 for 36 in saves).

East again to Philadelphia, where the Flyers welcome the Detroit Red Wings. Calvin Pickard and Carter Hart are the young goalies. Philadelphia started in the first period with a Scott Laughton goal, his second of the season, coming off of Matt Niskanen. Detroit tied it with a Robby Fabbri goal, his fifth of the year, assisted by Andreas Athanasiou and Valtteri Filppula. The Flyers replied with a Shayne Gostisbehere power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Jakub Voracek and Sean Couturier. Philadelphia added on in the second period with a Couturier goal, his eighth of the year, fueled by Niskanen and Voracek. The Flyers extended the lead in the third period as Kevin Hayes scored his seventh of the season, with the help of Laughton and Joel Farabee. Philadelphia padded the lead on an Oskar Lindblom goal, his tenth of the year, courtesy of Ivan Provorov and Voracek. The Flyers finished it at 6-1 with a James van Riemsdyk goal, his fifth of the campaign, with helpers from Tyler Pitlick and Robert Hagg. The three stars were Laughton, Couturier, and Voracek, while Niskanen gets an honorable mention.

In California, the San Jose Sharks bring in their in-state rivals, the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Quick and Martin Jones are the struggling goalies. San Jose struck first in the first period with a Patrick Marleau goal, his sixth of the season, coming off of Marcus Sorensen and Joe Thornton. The Sharks added on with a Marc-Edouard Vlasic goal, his fourth of the year, via Erik Karlsson and Timo Meier. San Jose extended the lead in the second period as Noah Gregor scored, thanks to Brenden Dillon and the goalie Jones. The Sharks padded the lead on a Logan Couture goal, his sixth of the season, made possible by Barclay Goodrow and Karlsson. Los Angeles got on the board in the third period with a Kyle Clifford goal, his third of the year, fueled by Matt Luff. The final remained at 4-1, with the three stars being Jones (33 for 34 in saves), Karlsson, and Gregor.

Northeast to Minnesota, as the Wild host the Ottawa Senators. Anders Nilsson and Alex Stalock are the unremarkable goalies. Ottawa was first to score in the first period with a Nick Paul goal, his third of the season, via Nikita Zaitsev and Mark Borowiecki. Minnesota tied it in the second period on a Ryan Donato goal, his third of the year, going in unassisted. The Senators took the lead back with a Brady Tkachuk goal, his ninth of the season, passed from Connor Brown and Logan Brown. The Wild tied it again with a Jared Spurgeon goal, his third of the year, fueled by Mats Zuccarello and Eric Staal. Minnesota took the lead on a Zach Parise goal, his eleventh of the season, with a lone assist by Kevin Fiala. The Wild added on in the third period with a Luke Kunin goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Joel Eriksson Ek and Spurgeon. Minnesota extended the lead as Ryan Hartman scored his third of the season, thanks to Jonas Brodin. The Wild padded the lead on an unassisted Staal power play goal, his eighth of the year. Minnesota capped it at 7-2 with a Jason Zucker goal, his ninth of the campaign, with helpers from Spurgeon and Brodin. The three stars went to Spurgeon, Staal, and Brodin.

Along to DC, as the Washington Capitals welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Braden Holtby guard the cages. Tampa Bay kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Brayden Point power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman. The Lightning added on with a Mikhail Sergachev goal, his third of the year, via Kucherov and Kevin Shattenkirk. Washington got on the board with an Evgeny Kuznetsov power play goal, his eleventh of the season, with assists provided by T.J. Oshie and Jakub Vrana. Tampa Bay shot back with an Alex Killorn goal, his sixth of the year, helped along by Point and Kucherov. The Capitals got one back in the third period with a Vrana goal, his twelfth of the season, with a lone assist by Oshie. Washington tied it on an Alex Ovechkin power play goal, his seventeenth of the year, with helpers from Dmitry Orlov and Travis Boyd. The Capitals won 4-3 in overtime with an Orlov goal, his second of the campaign, passed from Kuznetsov and Oshie. The three stars were Vrana, Oshie, and Orlov, while Kuznetsov, Kucherov, and Point get the honorable mentions.

Westward to Nevada, as the Vegas Golden Knights bring in the Arizona Coyotes. Darcy Kuemper faces a lesser foe in Malcolm Subban in goal. Vegas dented the scoreboard in the second period with an Alex Tuch power play goal, his second of the season, powered by Nicolas Hague and Jonathan Marchessault. Arizona tied it on a Jakob Chychrun goal, his sixth of the year, via Christian Dvorak and Alex Goligoski. In the shootout, Marchessault and Tuch lifted the Golden Knights 2-1 over Dvorak and the Coyotes. The three stars were Subban (35 for 36 in saves), Tuch, and Kuemper (37 for 38 in saves), while Marchessault and Dvorak get the honorable mentions.

Cross-country again to Columbus, where the Blue Jackets host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tristan Jarry and Joonas Korpisalo are set to start in goal. Columbus drew first blood in the first period with a Gustav Nyquist goal, his fifth of the season, made possible by Oliver Bjorkstrand. Pittsburgh tied it on a Jake Guentzel goal, his fifteenth of the year, guided in by Evgeni Malkin and Dominik Simon. The Blue Jackets retook the lead in the second period on an unassisted Nick Foligno goal, his third of the season. Columbus added on with another Nyquist goal, his second of the game and sixth of the year coming on the power play, powered by Pierre-Luc Dubois and Zach Werenski. The Blue Jackets extended the lead as Foligno scored his second of the game and fourth of the season on the power play, thanks to Alexander Wennberg and Seth Jones. The Penguins got one back in the third period with a Kris Letang goal, his sixth of the year, via Guentzel and Malkin. Columbus iced it at 5-2 with a Nyquist empty net goal, completing his hat trick on his seventh of the campaign, set up by Josh Anderson and David Savard. The three stars were Nyquist, Foligno, and Guentzel, while Malkin gets an honorable mention.

Southeast to Raleigh, as the Carolina Hurricanes welcome the Nashville Predators. Pekka Rinne and Petr Mrazek protect the nets. Nashville cracked the scoresheet in the first period with a Rocco Grimaldi goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Nick Bonino. The Predators added on with a Calle Jarnkrok goal, his ninth of the year, made possible by Filip Forsberg. Nashville extended the lead in the second period as Austin Watson scored his fourth of the season, thanks to Mattias Ekholm and Matt Duchene. This stood for the eventual 3-0 final score, with the three stars given to Rinne (31 save shutout), Grimaldi, and Jarnkrok.

Finally, the Dallas Stars bring in the St. Louis Blues. Jake Allen is mismatched with Ben Bishop in goal. St. Louis scored first in the first period with a Colton Parayko goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Ryan O'Reilly and David Perron. Dallas tied it on a Roope Hintz goal, his eleventh of the year, via Blake Comeau and Roman Polak in the third period. The Blues retook the lead with an O'Reilly goal, his sixth of the season, passed from Ivan Barbashev and Jay Bouwmeester. St. Louis iced it at 3-1 with a Barbashev empty net goal, his third of the year, set up by Perron and Brayden Schenn. The three stars went to O'Reilly, Allen (31 for 32 in saves), and Barbashev, while Perron gets an honorable mention.
