NHL 2021-22 - Day 169

We've got seven games on for this Sunday, beginning with...

The Washington Capitals hosting the Boston Bruins. Linus Ullmark and Vitek Vanecek are the goalies. Washington got going in the second period with a John Carlson goal, his fourteenth of the season, fueled by Conor Sheary. Boston tied it on a Curtis Lazar goal, his eighth of the year, via Nick Foligno. The Bruins took the lead with an Erik Haula goal, his fourteenth of the season, made possible by Charlie McAvoy. The Capitals retied it on a Tom Wilson goal, his twenty-third of the year, guided in by Lars Eller and Anthony Mantha. Washington retook the lead in the third period with an Eller goal, his tenth of the season, assisted by Nick Jensen. The Capitals iced it at 4-2 with an Alex Ovechkin empty net goal, his forty-fifth of the year, set up by Evgeny Kuznetsov and Carlson. The three stars were Eller, Carlson, and Wilson. 

Over in Pittsburgh, the Penguins welcome the Nashville Predators. David Rittich and Casey DeSmith are the backups in goal. Pittsburgh led off in the first period with a Sidney Crosby goal, his twenty-seventh of the season, coming off of Rickard Rakell and Kris Letang. Nashville tied it on a Matt Duchene goal, his thirty-eighth of the year, helped along by Mikael Granlund. The Predators took the lead in the third period with a Nick Cousins power play goal, his eighth of the season, going in unassisted. The Penguins retied it on a Jason Zucker goal, his seventh of the year, passed from Crosby and Rakell. Pittsburgh won 3-2 in overtime with a Crosby goal, his second of the game and twenty-eighth of the campaign, made possible by Rakell. The three stars were Crosby, Rakell, and Zucker.

Down in Tampa Bay, the Lightning bring in the Buffalo Sabres. Craig Anderson and Brian Elliott are the veterans in goal. Tampa Bay began in the first period with a Corey Perry goal, his seventeenth of the season, via Zach Bogosian. The Lightning added on with an Ondrej Palat goal, his sixteenth of the year, assisted by Brayden Point. Tampa Bay extended the lead in the second period as Brandon Hagel scored his twenty-fourth of the season, thanks to Anthony Cirelli and Victor Hedman. The Lightning padded the lead on a Nikita Kucherov goal, his fifteenth of the year, made possible by Ryan McDonagh and Palat. Tampa Bay continued in the third period with a Ross Colton goal, his sixteenth of the season, courtesy of Steven Stamkos and Nick Paul. The final was 5-0, with the three stars being Elliott (28 save shutout), Palat, and Perry.

Up in Minnesota, the Wild host the Los Angeles Kings. Cal Petersen and Marc-Andre Fleury are in the creases. Los Angeles opened in the first period with a shorthanded Rasmus Kupari goal, his fifth of the season, set up by Trevor Moore. The Kings added on with a Carl Grundstrom goal, his ninth of the year, going in unassisted. Los Angeles extended the lead with an Adrian Kempe power play goal, his thirty-second of the season, powered by Sean Durzi and Phillip Danault. Minnesota got on the board with a Kirill Kaprizov power play goal, his forty-second of the year, with assists provided by Matt Boldy and Jared Spurgeon. The Wild got closer with a Boldy goal, his thirteenth of the season, coming off of Kevin Fiala and Jacob Middleton. Minnesota tied it in the second period with an unassisted Spurgeon goal, his seventh of the year. The Wild took the lead as Mats Zuccarello scored his twenty-second of the season, thanks to Ryan Hartman. Minnesota padded the lead on a Marcus Foligno goal, his twenty-first of the year, helped along by Jordie Benn and Jordan Greenway. The Wild continued with a Nick Bjugstad shorthanded goal, his sixth of the season, with a lone helper by Middleton. This made it 6-3, the final, with the three stars being Spurgeon, Boldy, and Middleton.

Southeast again to Raleigh, as the Carolina Hurricanes welcome the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Frederik Andersen are the masked men. Carolina started in the first period with an Andrei Svechnikov goal, his twenty-eighth of the season, coming off of Brady Skjei and Seth Jarvis. The Hurricanes added on with a Jordan Staal goal, his eleventh of the year, via Nino Niederreiter and Jesper Fast. Anaheim got one back with a Josh Mahura goal, his second of the season, passed from Dominik Simon. Carolina replied with a Jordan Martinook goal, his fourth of the year, helped along by Max Domi and Svechnikov. The Ducks replied with a Troy Terry goal, his thirty-second of the season, made possible by Trevor Zegras and Derek Grant. The Hurricanes answered in the third period with a Staal goal, his second of the game and twelfth of the year, assisted by Niederreiter and Jaccob Slavin. Carolina iced it at 5-2 with a Staal empty net goal, completing his hat trick on his thirteenth of the campaign, set up by Fast and Tony DeAngelo. The three stars were Staal, Svechnikov, and Niederreiter.

Over in Chicago, the Blackhawks bring in the Dallas Stars. Jake Oettinger and Kevin Lankinen are the young goalies. Dallas struck first in the first period with a Jamie Benn power play goal, his eighteenth of the season, powered by Miro Heiskanen and Ryan Suter. Chicago tied it on a Philipp Kurashev goal, his sixth of the year, courtesy of Patrick Kane.The Blackhawks took the lead with a Jonathan Toews power play goal, his eleventh of the season, fueled by Kane and Kirby Dach. The Stars tied it again with a Joe Pavelski power play goal, his twenty-seventh of the year, with assists provided by Tyler Seguin and John Klingberg. Dallas took the lead in the second period with a Roope Hintz goal, his thirty-first of the season, with a lone helper from Pavelski. Chicago retied it on a Boris Katchouk goal, his third of the year, helped along by Erik Gustafsson and Reese Johnson. The Stars pulled ahead again with a Jason Robertson goal, his thirty-third of the season, coming off of Hintz. Dallas added on with another Robertson goal, his second of the game and thirty-fourth of the year, guided in by Hintz and Suter. The Stars extended the lead in the third period as Seguin scored his twenty-second of the season, thanks to Benn and Heiskanen. The Blackhawks got one back with a Dach goal, his ninth of the year, with helpers from Sam Lafferty and MacKenzie Entwistle. The final was 6-4, with the three stars awarded to Robertson, Hintz, and Benn, while Pavelski, Seguin, Suter, Dach, Heiskanen, and Kane get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Ottawa Senators host the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck faces a lesser foe in Mads Sogaard in goal. Ottawa kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Josh Norris goal, his thirty-second of the season, coming off of Brady Tkachuk. Winnipeg tied it on a Nikolaj Ehlers goal, his twenty-fifth of the year, via Dylan DeMelo and Paul Stastny. The Jets took the lead in the second period with a Pierre-Luc Dubois power play goal, his twenty-sixth of the season, powered by Kyle Connor and Neal Pionk. Winnipeg added on with a Stastny goal, his nineteenth of the year, made possible by Ehlers and Mark Scheifele. The Senators got one back with a Tkachuk power play goal in the third period, his twenty-fifth of the season, with assists provided by Colin White and Tim Stutzle. The Jets replied with a Connor power play goal, his forty-second of the year, helped along by Dubois and Ehlers. Ottawa fired back on another Tkachuk power play goal, his second of the game and twenty-sixth of the season, passed from Norris and Erik Brannstrom. This only made it 4-3, the final, with the three stars given to Ehlers, Connor, and Dubois, while Tkachuk, Norris, and Stastny get the honorable mentions.
