NHL 2021-22 - Day 171

There's a big 14-game schedule on today, beginning with...

The Boston Bruins hosting the St. Louis Blues. Ville Husso and Jeremy Swayman are the masked men. St. Louis started in the first period with a David Perron goal, his twenty-fourth of the season, coming off of Ryan O'Reilly and Brandon Saad. Boston tied it on a Patrice Bergeron goal, his twentieth of the year, via Brad Marchand and Derek Forbort. The Bruins took the lead with a Marc McLaughlin goal, his second of the season, fueled by Erik Haula and Connor Clifton. The Blues retied it in the second period on a Torey Krug power play goal, his ninth of the year, powered by Brayden Schenn and Perron. St. Louis took the lead with a Vladimir Tarasenko goal, his twenty-seventh of the season, passed from Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich. The Blues added on in the third period with another Tarasenko goal, his second of the game and twenty-eighth of the year, with helpers from Buchnevich and Krug. This stood for a 4-2 final, with the three stars being Tarasenko, Krug, and Buchnevich, while Perron gets an honorable mention.

In Toronto, the Maple Leafs welcome the Buffalo Sabres. Craig Anderson and Erik Kallgren are in the blue paint. Buffalo began in the first period with a Kyle Okposo power play goal, his nineteenth of the season, powered by Victor Olofsson and Rasmus Dahlin. Toronto tied it in the second period on a Timothy Liljegren, his fourth of the year, via William Nylander and Morgan Rielly. The Sabres pulled ahead again with a Tage Thompson power play goal, his thirty-third of the season, with assists provided by Alex Tuch and Henri Jokiharju. Buffalo added on in the third period with a Jeff Skinner goal, his thirty-first of the year, passed from Tuch and Thompson. The Sabres extended the lead as Dahlin scored his tenth of the season, thanks to Olofsson and Rasmus Asplund. The Maple Leafs got one back on an Alexander Kerfoot goal, his thirteenth of the year, made possible by Rielly and Pierre Engvall. Down in Florida, the Panthers bring in the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Sergei Bobrovsky are the veterans in goal. Anaheim led off in the first period with a Troy Terry goal, his thirty-third of the season, coming off of Trevor Zegras and Derek Grant. Florida tied it in the second period on an Anthony Duclair goal, his twenty-ninth of the year, via Carter Verhaeghe and Aleksander Barkov. The Ducks took the lead back with a Grant goal, his fourteenth of the season, assisted by Jamie Drysdale and Adam Henrique. The Panthers tied it again with a Duclair power play goal, his second of the game and thirtieth of the year, powered by Sam Reinhart and Claude Giroux. Florida won 3-2 in overtime with a Jonathan Huberdeau goal, his twenty-eighth of the campaign, going in unassisted. The three stars were Duclair, Huberdeau, and Grant.

Back north, the New York Rangers host the Carolina Hurricanes. Frederik Andersen and Igor Shesterkin tend the twines. New York got going in the second period with a K'Andre Miller goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Mika Zibanejad and Frank Vatrano. Carolina tied it on an Andrei Svechnikov goal, his twenty-ninth of the year, via Seth Jarvis and Sebastian Aho. The Hurricanes took the lead in the third period with a Jarvis goal, his fourteenth of the season, coming off of Aho and Brady Skjei. Carolina added on with a Jordan Staal goal, his fourteenth of the year, guided in by Skjei and Jesper Fast. The Rangers got one back with a Chris Kreider goal, his fiftieth of the season, helped along by Andrew Copp and Ryan Strome. The Hurricanes iced it at 4-2 with an empty net goal by Aho, his thirty-fourth of the year, set up by Svechnikov and Teuvo Teravainen. Along to DC, as the Washington Capitals welcome the Philadelphia Flyers. Carter Hart and Ilya Samsonov man the nets. Washington opened in the first period with Alex Ovechkin goal, his forty-sixth of the season, assisted by Conor Sheary and Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Capitals added on with a T.J. Oshie goal, his ninth of the year, via John Carlson and Nicklas Backstrom. Philadelphia got on the board with a James van Riemsdyk goal, his nineteenth of the season, going in unassisted. Washington shot back with a Martin Fehervary goal, his eighth of the year, made possible by Nic Dowd and Garnet Hathaway. Martin Jones replaced Hart to start the second period. The Capitals extended the lead in the second period as Lars Eller scored his eleventh of the season, thanks to Anthony Mantha and Tom Wilson. The Capitals padded the lead on a Sheary goal, his seventeenth of the year, fueled by Kuznetsov and Ovechkin. Washington continued with a Matt Irwin goal, helped along by Justin Schultz and Johan Larsson. Back in New York, the Islanders bring in the Pittsburgh Penguins. Casey DeSmith is mismatched with Ilya Sorokin in goal. Pittsburgh struck first in the first period with a Jake Guentzel goal, his thirty-fourth of the season, courtesy of Rickard Rakell and Sidney Crosby. New York tied it on a Zach Parise power play goal, his twelfth of the year, powered by Mathew Barzal and Noah Dobson. The Islanders pulled ahead on another Parise shorthanded goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the season, set up by Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Adam Pelech. New York added on with a Josh Bailey goal, his ninth of the year, an unassisted goal. The Penguins got one back with a Danton Heinen goal, his fifteenth of the season, helped along by Kasperi Kapanen and Brian Boyle in the second period. Pittsburgh tied it on another Guentzel goal, his second of the game and thirty-fifth of the year, with helpers from Rakell and Chad Ruhwedel. The Islanders pulled ahead in the third period with a Bailey goal, his second of the game and tenth of the season, going in unassisted. The Penguins retied it on a Jeff Carter power play goal, his eighteenth of the year, with assists provided by Guentzel and Crosby. The tie lasted to a shootout, where Kyle Palmieri's lone tally gave the Islanders a 5-4 win. The three stars were Bailey, Parise, and Guentzel, while Crosby and Rakell get the honorable mentions.

Next up, the Detroit Red Wings host the Ottawa Senators. Anton Forsberg and Thomas Greiss make the starts in goal. Ottawa kicked off the scoring in the first period with an Austin Watson goal, his eighth of the season, via Josh Norris and Mathieu Joseph. Detroit tied it in the second period on a Tyler Bertuzzi power play goal, his twenty-seventh of the year, powered by Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond. The Senators retook the lead with a Drake Batherson goal, his fifteenth of the season, coming off of Michael Del Zotto and Tim Stutzle. Ottawa added on in the third period with an empty net goal by Stutzle, his sixteenth of the year, set up by Nick Holden. The Senators finished it at 4-1 with another Stutzle empty net goal, his second of the game and seventeenth of the campaign, passed from Watson. Westward to Minnesota, as the Wild welcome the Edmonton Oilers. Mikko Koskinen and Cam Talbot protect the nets. Minnesota was first to score in the first period with a Frederick Gaudreau goal, his eleventh of the season, going in unassisted. The Wild added on in the second period with a Kevin Fiala goal, his twenty-fifth of the year, via Matt Boldy and Dmitry Kulikov. Minnesota extended the lead as Fiala scored his second of the game and twenty-sixth of the season, an unassisted goal. The Wild padded the lead on a Ryan Hartman goal, his twenty-eighth of the year, made possible by Kirill Kaprizov. Minnesota continued in the third period with a Hartman goal, his second of the game and twenty-ninth of the season, fueled by Jordie Benn and Kaprizov. Edmonton got on the board with a Leon Draisaitl power play goal, his fifty-first of the year, powered by Tyson Barrie and Zach Hyman. The final stood at 5-1, with the three stars given to Fiala, Hartman, and Kaprizov.

Down in Nashville, the Predators bring in the San Jose Sharks. Kaapo Kahkonen and Juuse Saros are the Finnish goalies. Nashville won 1-0 in overtime with a Mattias Ekholm goal, his sixth of the season, via Ryan Johansen and Filip Forsberg. The three stars were Saros (25 save shutout), Ekholm, and Kahkonen (40 for 41 in saves).

Along to Chicago, as the Blackhawks host the Los Angeles Kings. Jonathan Quick and Collin Delia are set to start in goal. Los Angeles drew first blood in the first period with a Trevor Moore goal, his fifteenth of the season, courtesy of Phillip Danault and Viktor Arvidsson. The Kings added on with a Danault goal, his twenty-second of the year, via Matt Roy and Arvidsson. Chicago got on the board in the second period with a Taylor Raddysh goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by Philipp Kurashev and Jonathan Toews. Los Angeles replied with a Blake Lizotte goal, his ninth of the year, coming off of Alex Iafallo and Dustin Brown. The Kings extended the lead in the third period as Jordan Spence scored his second of the season, thanks to Anze Kopitar and Arthur Kaliyev. The Blackhawks got one back with a Patrick Kane goal, his twenty-third of the year, with helpers from Raddysh and Kurashev. Los Angeles iced it at 5-2 with a Lizotte empty net goal, his second of the game and tenth of the campaign, set up by Brown and Alexander Edler. The final stood at 5-2, with the three stars being Danault, Raddysh, and Lizotte, while Arvidsson, Brown, and Kurashev get the honorable mentions.

Northwest to Calgary, with the Flames welcoming the Seattle Kraken. Chris Driedger and Jacob Markstrom patrol the creases. Seattle opened in the first period with a Ryan Donato goal, his fifteenth of the season, assisted by Matty Beniers and Vince Dunn. Calgary tied it on a Matthew Tkachuk goal, his thirty-fifth of the year, via Noah Hanifin and Rasmus Andersson. The Kraken took the lead back in the second period with a Victor Rask goal, his seventh of the season, made possible by Yanni Gourde and Kole Lind. Seattle added on with an Adam Larsson goal, his seventh of the year, with helpers from Alexander Wennberg and Joonas Donskoi. Dan Vladar replaced Markstrom in goal. The Flames got one back on a Tkachuk power play goal, his second of the game and thirty-sixth of the season, powered by Johnny Gaudreau and Andersson. Calgary tied it on an Andrew Mangiapane goal, his thirty-first of the year, guided in by Elias Lindholm and Connor Mackey. The Flames took the lead with a Hanifin power play goal, his eighth of the season, with assists provided by Michael Stone and Mikael Backlund. Calgary iced it at 5-3 with a Tkachuk empty net goal, completing his hat trick on his thirty-seventh of the year, set up by Gaudreau. Backtracking to Dallas, as the Stars bring in the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Scott Wedgewood are designated to start in goal. Dallas dented the scoreboard in the third period with a Roope Hintz goal, his thirty-second of the season, assisted by Joe Pavelski and Jason Robertson. The final held at 1-0, with the three stars going to Wedgewood (24 save shutout), Hintz, and Vasilevskiy (28 for 29 in saves).

Over in Arizona, the Coyotes host the New Jersey Devils. Nico Daws and Karel Vejmelka are the inexperienced goalies. Arizona led off in the first period with a Travis Boyd goal, his fourteenth of the season, via Nick Schmaltz and Nick Ritchie. New Jersey tied it on a Fabian Zetterlund goal, coming off of Nico Hischier and Yegor Sharangovich. The Devils took the lead in the second period with a Kevin Bahl goal, assisted by Nathan Bastian. The Coyotes tied it with a Schmaltz power play goal, his twenty-third of the year, powered by Shayne Gostisbehere and Matias Maccelli. New Jersey took the lead back with a Tomas Tatar goal, his fifteenth of the season, courtesy of Jesper Bratt. The Devils added on with a Jesper Boqvist goal, his seventh of the year, helped along by Janne Kuokkanen and P.K. Subban. New Jersey extended the lead in the third period as Sharangovich scored his twenty-first of the season, with the help of Zetterlund and Hischier. The Devils padded the lead as Sharangovich scored his second of the game and twenty-second of the year, thanks to Bahl and Hischier. This made it 6-2, the final, with the three stars going to Sharangovich, Hischier, and Zetterlund, while Bahl and Schmaltz get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Vancouver Canucks host the Vegas Golden Knights. Robin Lehner and Thatcher Demko protect the nets. Vancouver began in the first period with a Bo Horvat power play goal, his thirty-first of the season, powered by Alex Chiasson and J.T. Miller. Vegas tied it on an Alec Martinez goal, assisted by Mattias Janmark and Keegan Kolesar. The Canucks took the lead with a Vasily Podkolzin goal, his eleventh of the year, coming off of Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes in the second period. Vancouver added on with a Pettersson goal, his twenty-sixth of the season, helped along by Conor Garland. The Golden Knights got one back with a Michael Amadio goal, his ninth of the year, with helpers from Jonathan Marchessault and William Karlsson. The Canucks shot back on a Brad Richardson goal, his fourth of the season, courtesy of Pettersson. Vegas got one back with a Shea Theodore goal, his twelfth of the year, with assists provided by Evgenii Dadonov and Martinez. The Golden Knights tied it on a Theodore goal, his second of the game and thirteenth of the season, made possible by Alex Pietrangelo and Jack Eichel. Vancouver won 5-4 in overtime with a Hughes goal, his sixth of the year, guided in by Garland and Horvat. The three stars were Pettersson, Hughes, and Theodore, while Horvat, Garland, and Martinez get the honorable mentions.
