NHL 2022-23 - Day 18

It's another 10-game night, beginning in...

Boston, as the Bruins host the Detroit Red Wings. Ville Husso and Jeremy Swayman man the nets. Boston opened in the first period with a Charlie Coyle goal, his second of the season, fueled by Derek Forbort and Brad Marchand. The Bruins added on in the second period with a Marchand power play goal, assisted by Hampus Lindholm and David Pastrnak. Detroit got on the board with an Adam Erne goal, his second of the year, coming off of Filip Hronek. Boston replied in the third period with a Marchand power play goal, his second of the game, with assists provided by Jake DeBrusk and Pastrnak. The Bruins extended the lead as Craig Smith scored, thanks to Tomas Nosek and Forbort. Boston padded the lead as Pastrnak scored his sixth of the season, thanks to Patrice Bergeron and Lindholm on the power play. The final stayed at 5-1, with the three stars awarded to Marchand, Pastrnak, and Lindholm, while Forbort gets an honorable mention.

Along to Buffalo, as the Sabres welcome the Montreal Canadiens. Sam Montembeault and Eric Comrie are set to start in goal. Montreal started in the first period with a Brendan Gallagher goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Josh Anderson and Christian Dvorak. Buffalo tied it in the second period with a Jeff Skinner power play goal, powered by Alex Tuch and Jack Quinn. The Canadiens took the lead in the third period with a Kaiden Guhle goal, helped along by David Savard and Cole Caufield. The Sabres retied it on a Dylan Cozens goal, his third of the year, coming off of Jacob Bryson and Lawrence Pilut. Montreal retook the lead on a Gallagher goal, his second of the game and third of the season, with helpers from Savard. The final held at 3-2, with the three stars given to Gallagher, Montembeault (43 for 45 in saves), and Savard.

In Ottawa, the Senators bring in the Minnesota Wild. Marc-Andre Fleury and Anton Forsberg are the goalies. Ottawa began in the first period with an Alex DeBrincat goal, his second of the season, via Claude Giroux and Travis Hamonic. Minnesota tied it on a Mats Zuccarello power play goal, his fifth of the year, powered by Calen Addison and Kirill Kaprizov. The Wild pulled ahead with a Kaprizov goal, his fifth of the season, assisted by Jared Spurgeon and Frederick Gaudreau. Minnesota added on with a Ryan Hartman goal in the second period, fueled by Joel Eriksson Ek. The Senators got one back in the third period with a Thomas Chabot power play goal, his second of the year, with assists provided by DeBrincat and Drake Batherson. The Wild fired back with a shorthanded empty net goal by Gaudreau, set up by Hartman. This made it 4-2, the final, with the three stars handed to Kaprizov, Gaudreau, and DeBrincat, while Hartman gets an honorable mention.

Back stateside, the Philadelphia Flyers host the Florida Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky and Carter Hart protect the nets. Florida led off in the first period with a Gustav Forsling goal, his second of the season, coming off of Aleksander Barkov and Carter Verhaeghe. Philadelphia tied it on a Tony DeAngelo goal, his second of the year, passed from Travis Konecny and Joel Farabee. The Panthers retook the lead on a Josh Mahura goal, his second of the season, guided in by Radko Gudas and Colin White. The Flyers tied it on a Scott Laughton power play goal, his third of the year, powered by Konecny and Kevin Hayes. Philadelphia pulled ahead in the second period with a Zack MacEwen goal, his second of the season, courtesy of Nick Seeler and Nicolas Deslauriers. The Flyers added on with a Farabee goal, his  of the year, made possible by Hayes and Owen Tippett. Florida got one back in the third period with a Brandon Montour power play goal, his second of the season, with assists provided by Sam Reinhart and Matthew Tkachuk. This was as close as it got in the 4-3 game, with the three stars belonging to Farabee, Konecny, and Hayes.

Down in Nashville, the Predators welcome the St. Louis Blues. Thomas Greiss and Juuse Saros receive the starting nods in goal. St. Louis struck first in the first period with a Robert Thomas goal, assisted by Justin Faulk. Nashville tied it on a Tanner Jeannot goal, his third of the season, guided in by Yakov Trenin and Roman Josi. The Blues pulled ahead in the second period with a Brayden Schenn power play goal, his second of the year, powered by Colton Parayko and Faulk. The Predators tied it on a Michael McCarron goal, via Josi and Filip Forsberg. Nashville pulled ahead with a Zach Sanford goal, fueled by Cole Smith. The Predators added on in the third period with a Ryan Johansen goal, his third of the season, coming off of Forsberg and Matt Duchene. Nashville extended the lead on a power play goal by Josi, with assists provided by Forsberg and Duchene. The Predators iced it at 6-2 with a Mikael Granlund empty net goal, set up by Duchene and Smith. The three stars were handed to Josi, Forsberg, and Duchene, while Faulk and Smith get the honorable mentions.

Next up, the Chicago Blackhawks bring in the Edmonton Oilers. Jack Campbell and Alex Stalock are in the creases. Edmonton kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Zach Hyman goal, his fourth of the season, fueled by Connor McDavid and Evander Kane. Chicago tied it on an Andreas Athanasiou goal, his second of the year, via Max Domi. The Blackhawks took the lead with a Reese Johnson goal, helped along by Caleb Jones and Colin Blackwell. The Oilers tied it on a McDavid goal in the second period, his sixth of the season, made possible by Evan Bouchard and Brett Kulak. Chicago retook the lead with a Jonathan Toews power play goal, his fourth of the year, powered by Domi and Patrick Kane. Edmonton tied it on another McDavid power play goal, his second of the game and seventh of the season, with helpers from Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The Blackhawks took the lead with a Domi power play goal, his fourth of the year, assisted by Taylor Raddysh and Patrick Kane. The Oilers tied it in the third period with a Nugent-Hopkins goal, his fifth of the season, courtesy of Draisaitl and Tyson Barrie. Edmonton pulled ahead on a McDavid goal, completing his hat trick on his eighth of the year, guided in by Bouchard and Nugent-Hopkins. Chicago tied it on a Patrick Kane goal, his second of the season, passed from Jake McCabe and Jones. The Oilers regained the lead with a Draisaitl goal, his fourth of the year, coming off of Kane and Kailer Yamamoto. The final was 6-5, with the three stars being McDavid, Draisaitl, and Nugent-Hopkins, while Bouchard, Patrick Kane, Domi, Evander Kane, and Jones get the honorable mentions.

South to Dallas, where the Stars host the Washington Capitals. Darcy Kuemper and Jake Oettinger tend the twines. Dallas was first to score in the first period with a Jason Robertson goal, his third of the season, passed from Nils Lundkvist and Roope Hintz. The Stars added on in the third period with a shorthanded and unassisted Joel Kiviranta goal, his third of the year. The final stood at 2-0, with the three stars awarded to Oettinger (27 save shutout), Robertson, and Kiviranta.

Back up north, the Seattle Kraken welcome the Vancouver Canucks. Thatcher Demko faces a lesser foe in Martin Jones in goal. Vancouver drew first blood in the first period with an Ilya Mikheyev goal, assisted by Luke Schenn and Andrei Kuzmenko. Seattle tied it on a Jamie Oleksiak goal, his second of the season, passed from Justin Schultz and Brandon Tanev. The Kraken took the lead with a Jared McCann goal, his fifth of the year, via Yanni Gourde and Vince Dunn. The Canucks tied it in the second period with a Mikheyev power play goal, his second of the game, powered by Sheldon Dries and Conor Garland. Vancouver pulled ahead with a Kuzmenko power play goal, his second of the season, with assists provided by J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson. Seattle retied it on a Matty Beniers goal, his fourth of the year, helped along by Jaden Schwartz and Jordan Eberle. The Canucks pulled ahead with a Pettersson goal, his fourth of the season, made possible by Schenn. Vancouver added on with a Garland empty net goal, his third of the year, going in unassisted. The Kraken got one back with a Schwartz power play goal, his fourth of the campaign, with helpers from Eberle and Andre Burakovsky. This only made it 5-4, the final, with the three stars being Mikheyev, Pettersson, and Kuzmenko, while Garland, Schwartz, Schenn, and Eberle get the honorable mentions.

Moving on to San Jose, as the Sharks bring in the Toronto Maple Leafs. Erik Kallgren and Kaapo Kahkonen are the backups in goal. San Jose dented the scoreboard in the first period with a Logan Couture goal, his third of the season, via Matt Nieto and Alexander Barabanov. Toronto tied it on a David Kampf goal, his third of the year, assisted by Alexander Kerfoot and Mitchell Marner. The Sharks took the lead back in the second period with a Couture power play goal, his second of the game and fourth of the season, powered by Barabanov and Erik Karlsson. San Jose added on with a Timo Meier power play goal, with helpers from Couture and Karlsson. The Maple Leafs got one back with a Marner goal, his second of the year, passed from Morgan Rielly and Kerfoot. Toronto tied it on an Auston Matthews power play goal in the third period, his second of the season, helped along by Rielly and John Tavares. The Sharks won 4-3 in overtime with a Karlsson goal, his fourth of the year, set up by Meier. The three stars were Couture, Karlsson, and Meier, while Marner, Rielly, and Kerfoot get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings host the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Jonathan Quick are between the pipes. Winnipeg got going in the first period with a Mark Scheifele goal, his fifth of the season, going in unassisted. Los Angeles tied it on an Arthur Kaliyev power play goal, his second of the year, powered by Trevor Moore and Sean Durzi. The Kings took the lead with a Blake Lizotte goal, his second of the season, coming off of Carl Grundstrom and Brendan Lemieux. Los Angeles added on with a Gabriel Vilardi goal, his sixth of the year, passed from Kevin Fiala. The Jets got one back with a shorthanded Adam Lowry goal, set up by David Gustafsson and Dylan DeMelo. Winnipeg tied it in the second period with a Pierre-Luc Dubois power play goal, his third of the season, with assists provided by Kyle Connor and Josh Morrissey. The Jets took the lead with a Nate Schmidt goal, assisted by Lowry and Morgan Barron. The Kings tied it on a Moore goal, courtesy of Phillip Danault. Winnipeg regained the lead with an Axel Jonsson-Fjallby goal, fueled by Brenden Dillon. The Jets capped it at 6-4 with a Blake Wheeler power play empty net goal, set up by Barron. The three stars belonged to Lowry, Moore, and Barron.
