NHL 2022-23 - Day 121

There's six games on this Wednesday, beginning with...

The Toronto Maple Leafs hosting the Chicago Blackhawks. Petr Mrazek and Ilya Samsonov are set to start in goal. Toronto opened in the first period with a William Nylander goal, his thirtieth of the season, assisted by Morgan Rielly and T.J. Brodie. Chicago tied it on a Sam Lafferty goal, his ninth of the year, going in unassisted. The Maple Leafs took the lead back with a Rasmus Sandin goal, his fourth of the season, fueled by John Tavares. Toronto added on with an Auston Matthews goal, his twenty-sixth of the year, guided in by Nylander and Sandin. The Blackhawks got one back in the second period with a Philipp Kurashev goal, his eighth of the season, coming off of Max Domi and Jake McCabe. The Maple Leafs replied with a Tavares goal, his twenty-fourth of the year, made possible by Alexander Kerfoot and Mitch Marner. Toronto extended the lead as Conor Timmins scored his second of the season, thanks to Matthews and Nylander. The final stood at 5-2, with the three stars going to Nylander, Matthews, and Tavares, while Sandin gets an honorable mention.

Out in Arizona, the Coyotes welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning. Brian Elliott and Connor Ingram are the backups in goal. The scoreless tie went to a shootout, where Nick Schmaltz and Clayton Keller lifted the Coyotes to a 1-0 win over Steven Stamkos and the Lightning. The three stars were Ingram (47 save shutout), Elliott (26 save "shutout"), and Keller.

Backtracking to Minnesota, as the Wild bring in the Colorado Avalanche. Alexandar Georgiev and Marc-Andre Fleury protect the nets. Colorado struck first in the first period with an Andrew Cogliano goal, his ninth of the season, coming off of Devon Toews and Samuel Girard. The Avalanche added on in the second period with a Denis Malgin goal, his fourth of the year, via Nathan MacKinnon and Josh Manson. Minnesota got on the board with a Joel Eriksson Ek power play goal, his twenty-first of the season, powered by Mats Zuccarello and Matt Boldy. Colorado replied with a MacKinnon goal, his eighteenth of the year, guided in by Artturi Lehkonen and Toews. The Wild got one back on a Kirill Kaprizov goal, his thirty-first of the season, made possible by Zuccarello and Jonas Brodin. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars being MacKinnon, Toews, and Zuccarello.

West to Edmonton, as the Oilers host the Detroit Red Wings. Ville Husso and Jack Campbell are the masked men. Detroit started in the first period with a Dylan Larkin power play goal, his twenty-first of the season, powered by Robby Fabbri and David Perron. The Red Wings added on with a Moritz Seider goal, his fourth of the year, courtesy of Andrew Copp. Edmonton got on the board in the second period with a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins goal, his twenty-fifth of the season, via Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman. Detroit replied with a Fabbri power play goal, his sixth of the year, with assists provided by Perron and Filip Hronek. The Oilers replied with a Nugent-Hopkins goal, his second of the game and twenty-sixth of the season, helped along by McDavid and Evan Bouchard. The Red Wings shot back on an Olli Maatta goal, his fifth of the year, coming off of Larkin. Edmonton got one back with a Leon Draisaitl power play goal, his thirty-first of the season, with helpers from Tyson Barrie and Nugent-Hopkins. The Oilers tied it on a Derek Ryan goal, his ninth of the year, guided in by Klim Kostin and Philip Broberg. The tie lasted to a shootout, where Pius Suter and Perron lifted the Red Wings to a 5-4 win over McDavid. The three stars were Perron, Nugent-Hopkins, and McDavid, while Larkin and Fabbri get the honorable mentions.

Further west, the Vancouver Canucks welcome the New York Rangers. Igor Shesterkin faces a lesser foe in Arturs Silovs in goal. Vancouver led off in the first period with a Curtis Lazar goal, his third of the season, assisted by Dakota Joshua and Nils Aman. New York tied it on a Mika Zibanejad goal, his twenty-eighth of the year, passed from Adam Fox. The Rangers took the lead with an Artemi Panarin goal, his seventeenth of the season, coming off of Jimmy Vesey. The Canucks tied it on a J.T. Miller power play goal, his nineteenth of the year, powered by Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes. New York regained the lead on a Panarin goal, his second of the game and eighteenth of the season, via Niko Mikkola and Braden Schneider. The Rangers added on in the second period with a Chris Kreider goal, his twenty-second of the year, helped along by Zibanejad and Vladimir Tarasenko. Vancouver got one back with a Conor Garland goal, his eleventh of the season, guided in by Andrei Kuzmenko and Sheldon Dries. New York countered on a K'Andre Miller goal, his sixth of the year, going in unassisted. The Canucks got one back in the third period on a Kuzmenko goal, his twenty-third of the season, with helpers from Pettersson and Anthony Beauvillier. The Rangers replied with a Zibanejad empty net goal, his second of the game and twenty-ninth of the year, set up by Panarin. The three stars of the 6-4 game were Zibanejad, Panarin, and Kuzmenko, while Pettersson get the honorable mentions.

Finally, the Anaheim Ducks bring in the Buffalo Sabres. Eric Comrie and Lukas Dostal are in the blue paint. Buffalo began in the first period with a Tyson Jost goal, his fifth of the season, coming off of Rasmus Dahlin and Henri Jokiharju. The Sabres added on with a Tage Thompson power play goal, his thirty-sixth of the year, powered by Dahlin and Jeff Skinner. Anaheim got on the board with a Kevin Shattenkirk goal in the second period, assisted by Trevor Zegras and Derek Grant. The Ducks tied it on a Cam Fowler goal, his eighth of the season, helped along by Dmitry Kulikov and Ryan Strome. Anaheim pulled ahead with a Fowler goal, his second of the game and ninth of the year, guided in by Grant and Shattenkirk. Buffalo retied it on a Peyton Krebs goal, his eighth of the season, fueled by Jack Quinn and Kale Clague. The Sabres gained the lead back on a Casey Mittelstadt goal, his ninth of the year, via Krebs and Mattias Samuelsson. Buffalo extended the lead in the third period as Alex Tuch scored his twenty-fifth of the season, thanks to Dylan Cozens and Kyle Okposo. The Sabres padded the lead as Zemgus Girgensons scored his sixth of the year, with the help of Quinn and Jost. Buffalo iced it at 7-3 with a Cozens goal, his nineteenth of the campaign, courtesy of Tuch and Mittelstadt. The three stars went to Jost, Tuch, and Krebs, while Cozens, Mittelstadt, Quinn, Dahlin, Fowler, Shattenkirk, and Grant get the honorable mentions.
