NHL 2023-24 - Day 98

There's 12 games on for Hockey Day in Canada, beginning with...

The Buffalo Sabres hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning. Jonas Johansson and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen are in goal. Tampa Bay led off in the first period with a Nick Paul goal, his twelfth of the season, via Brandon Hagel and Anthony Cirelli. The Lightning added on with a shorthanded and unassisted Tyler Motte goal, his fourth of the year. Buffalo got on the board in the second period with a Dylan Cozens goal, his eighth of the season, assisted by JJ Peterka and Rasmus Dahlin. Tampa Bay iced it at 3-1 in the third period with a Calvin de Haan empty net goal, his third of the year, set up by Hagel and Paul. The three stars were Johansson (26 for 27 in saves), Paul, and Hagel. 

Over in Philadelphia, the Flyers welcome the Colorado Avalanche. Alexandar Georgiev and Carter Hart guard the cages. Colorado began in the first period with a Logan O'Connor goal, his ninth of the season, fueled by Ross Colton and Sam Malinski. The Avalanche added on with a Mikko Rantanen goal, his twenty-fifth of the year, guided in by Nathan MacKinnon and Colton. Colorado extended the lead in the second period as MacKinnon scored his twenty-fifth of the season, thanks to Miles Wood and Josh Manson. Philadelphia got on the board with a Joel Farabee goal, his sixteenth of the year, coming off of Morgan Frost and Cam Atkinson. The Avalanche replied with an O'Connor goal, his second of the game and tenth of the season, passed from Wood and Colton. The Flyers shot back on a Travis Konecny goal, his twenty-second of the year, courtesy of Owen Tippett and Ryan Poehling. Colorado responded on a MacKinnon goal, his second of the game and twenty-sixth of the season, with helpers from Manson and Joel Kiviranta. Samuel Ersson replaced Hart in goal. Philadelphia got one back in the third period with a Tyson Foerster goal, his seventh of the year, helped along by Frost and Atkinson. The Flyers pulled closer with an Atkinson goal, his twelfth of the season, made possible by Rasmus Ristolainen and Noah Cates. The Avalanche countered with a Rantanen power play goal, his second of the game and twenty-sixth of the year, powered by Cale Makar and Jonathan Drouin. Colorado iced it at 7-4 with an O'Connor empty net goal to complete his hat trick on his eleventh of the campaign, set up by MacKinnon and Devon Toews. The three stars were O'Connor, MacKinnon, and Rantanen, while Colton, Wood, Manson, Atkinson, and Frost get the honorable mentions. 

Up in Ottawa, the Senators bring in the Winnipeg Jets. Connor Hellebuyck and Joonas Korpisalo patrol the creases. Winnipeg got going in the second period with a Mason Appleton goal, his eighth of the season, via Nino Niederreiter and Dylan Samberg. Ottawa tied it on a Parker Kelly goal, his sixth of the year, coming off of Vladimir Tarasenko and Josh Norris. The Jets won 2-1 in overtime with a Nikolaj Ehlers goal, his sixteenth of the campaign, assisted by Neal Pionk and Vladislav Namestnikov. The three stars were Hellebuyck (34 for 35 in saves), Ehlers, and Appleton.

Way southwest to Arizona, as the Coyotes host the Nashville Predators. Juuse Saros and Connor Ingram are the masked men. Arizona opened in the first period with a Clayton Keller goal, his eighteenth of the season, assisted by Dylan Guenther and Sean Durzi. The Coyotes added on in the second period with a Keller goal, his second of the game and nineteenth of the year, coming off of Matias Maccelli. Nashville got on the board with a Roman Josi power play goal, his ninth of the season, powered by Gustav Nyquist and Colton Sissons. Arizona fired back with a Michael Carcone goal, his fifteenth of the year, courtesy of Jack McBain and Durzi. The Predators pulled one back in the third period with a Tommy Novak goal, his eighth of the campaign, with a lone assist by Filip Forsberg. This only made it 3-2, the final, with the three stars going to Keller, Durzi, and Carcone. 

Back east, the Boston Bruins welcome the Montreal Canadiens. Sam Montembeault and Linus Ullmark are set to start in goal. Montreal started in the first period with a Cole Caufield power play goal, his sixteenth of the season, powered by Sean Monahan and Juraj Slafkovsky. Boston tied it on a Brandon Carlo goal, his third of the year, courtesy of Trent Frederic and Jakub Lauko. The Canadiens took the lead back with a Joel Armia goal, his eighth of the season, made possible by Joshua Roy and Monahan. The Bruins tied it again with a Jake DeBrusk goal, his eleventh of the year, guided in by James van Riemsdyk. Boston took the lead with a Danton Heinen goal, his sixth of the season, assisted by Matt Grzelcyk and Charlie McAvoy. Montreal tied it again with a Michael Matheson power play goal in the second period, his seventh of the year, with assists provided by Monahan and Nick Suzuki. The Bruins pulled ahead again with another Heinen goal, his second of the game and seventh of the season, fueled by Jesper Boqvist and Hampus Lindholm. Boston added on with a Charlie Coyle goal, his sixteenth of the year, with helpers from David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand. The Canadiens responded with a Brendan Gallagher goal, his eighth of the season, with a lone assist by Rafael Harvey-Pinard. The Bruins countered in the third period with an unassisted Pastrnak goal, his thirtieth of the year. Boston extended the lead as Marchand scored his twentieth of the season, thanks to Coyle. The Bruins padded the lead on a Pavel Zacha goal, his tenth of the year, passed from DeBrusk and van Riemsdyk. Cayden Primeau replaced Montembeault in goal. Boston finished it at 9-4 with a Heinen power play goal to complete his hat trick on his eighth of the campaign, dished from Morgan Geekie and Kevin Shattenkirk. The three stars were Heinen, Pastrnak, and Marchand, while Coyle, DeBrusk, van Riemsdyk and Monahan get the honorable mentions.

In New Jersey, the Devils bring in the Dallas Stars. Scott Wedgewood and Nico Daws are the backups in goal. Dallas struck first in the first period with a Joe Pavelski power play goal, his nineteenth of the season, powered by Jamie Benn and Jason Robertson. The Stars added on with a Roope Hintz shorthanded goal in the second period, his nineteenth of the year, set up by Ryan Suter. Dallas extended the lead as Matt Duchene scored his fifteenth of the season, thanks to Tyler Seguin and Thomas Harley. The Stars padded the lead on a Hintz goal, his second of the game and twentieth of the year, assisted by Wyatt Johnston and Suter. Dallas continued in the third period with a Craig Smith goal, his fifth of the season, helped along by Ty Dellandrea and Harley. The Stars kept going with a Johnston goal, his thirteenth of the year, made possible by Robertson and Esa Lindell. New Jersey got on the board with a Jesper Bratt goal, his seventeenth of the season, coming off of Timo Meier and Nico Hischier. The Devils got closer with an unassisted Tyler Toffoli goal, his seventeenth of the year. This only made it 6-2, the final, with the three stars being Hintz, Johnston, and Robertson, while Harley and Suter get the honorable mentions.

Westward to Vancouver, as the Canucks host the Toronto Maple Leafs. Martin Jones and Thatcher Demko are the veteran goalies. Vancouver kicked off the scoring in the first period with a Nils Hoglander goal, his thirteenth of the season, via Sam Lafferty and Quinn Hughes. The Canucks added on with another Hoglander goal, his second of the game and fourteenth of the year, assisted by Nils Aman and Conor Garland. Vancouver extended the lead as Garland scored his seventh of the season, thanks to Teddy Blueger and Dakota Joshua. Toronto got on the board in the second period with a William Nylander goal, his twenty-second of the year, passed from Morgan Rielly and T.J. Brodie. The Maple Leafs got one back with a Jake McCabe goal, his third of the season, courtesy of Mitchell Marner and Auston Matthews. Toronto tied it as Nylander scored his second of the game and twenty-third of the year, with the help of Rielly. The Canucks retook the lead on a Garland goal, his second of the game and eighth of the season, made possible by Blueger. The Maple Leafs tied it again on a Marner shorthanded and unassisted goal in the third period, his twentieth of the year. Vancouver pulled ahead again with a J.T. Miller power play goal, his twenty-first of the season, powered by Hughes and Elias Pettersson. The Canucks padded the lead on a Pettersson power play goal, his twenty-fifth of the year, with assists provided by Miller and Hughes. This stood for a 6-4 win, with the three stars going to Garland, Hoglander, and Miller, while Nylander, Pettersson, Hughes, Blueger, Marner, and Rielly get the honorable mentions.

Backtracking to St. Louis, as the Blues welcome the Washington Capitals. Charlie Lindgren and Jordan Binnington are the former teammates in goal. St. Louis was first to score in the first period with a Colton Parayko shorthanded goal, his eighth of the season, set up by Robert Thomas. The Blues added on in the second period with a Brayden Schenn goal, his tenth of the year, courtesy of Justin Faulk and Pavel Buchnevich. St. Louis extended the lead in the third period as Jake Neighbours scored his fourteenth of the campaign on the power play, powered by Thomas and Jordan Kyrou. The final held at 3-0, with the three stars awarded to Binnington (18 save shutout), Parayko, and Thomas.

Northwest to Calgary as the Flames bring in the Edmonton Oilers. Stuart Skinner faces a lesser foe in Dan Vladar in goal. Edmonton drew first blood in the first period with a Ryan McLeod goal, his ninth of the season, via Warren Foegele and Vincent Desharnais. Calgary tied it in the second period with a MacKenzie Weegar goal, his tenth of the year, made possible by Blake Coleman. The Oilers took the lead back with a Sam Gagner goal, his fifth of the season, passed from Dylan Holloway and Cody Ceci in the third period. Edmonton iced it at 3-1 with a Zach Hyman empty net goal, his twenty-eighth of the year, set up by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The three stars were Skinner (26 for 27 in saves), Gagner, and McLeod.

South to Vegas, where the Golden Knights host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tristan Jarry and Logan Thompson protect the nets. Pittsburgh dented the scoreboard in the second period with a Ryan Graves goal, his third of the season, via Erik Karlsson and Evgeni Malkin. The Penguins added on with a Jake Guentzel goal, his twentieth of the year, assisted by Sidney Crosby and Marcus Pettersson. Vegas got on the board in the third period with a Jonathan Marchessault goal, his twentieth of the season, passed from Ivan Barbashev and Alec Martinez. The Golden Knights tied it on a Pavel Dorofeyev goal, his sixth of the year, coming off of Chandler Stephenson and Mark Stone. Vegas took the lead with a Brendan Brisson goal, helped along by Barbashev and Alex Pietrangelo. This stood for a 3-2 win, with the three stars being Barbashev, Brisson, and Thompson (23 for 25 in saves).

Over in San Jose, the Sharks welcome the Anaheim Ducks. John Gibson and Mackenzie Blackwood start in goal. San Jose cracked the scoresheet in the second period with a Marc-Edouard Vlasic goal, his second of the season, assisted by Logan Couture and the goalie Blackwood. Anaheim tied it on a Jackson LaCombe goal, via Adam Henrique. The Sharks retook the lead with a Kyle Burroughs goal, guided in by Tomas Hertl. San Jose added on with a Fabian Zetterlund goal, his thirteenth of the year, passed from Ryan Carpenter and Henry Thrun. The Ducks got one back with a Henrique goal, his twelfth of the season, made possible by Troy Terry and Leo Carlsson. The Sharks replied in the third period with a Jan Rutta goal, coming off of Zetterlund and Mike Hoffman. Anaheim got one back with a Mason McTavish power play goal, his thirteenth of the year, powered by Terry. San Jose iced it at 5-3 with a Hertl empty net goal, his fourteenth of the campaign, set up by Nico Sturm. The three stars were Zetterlund, Hertl, and Henrique, while Terry gets an honorable mention.

Finally, the Los Angeles Kings bring in the New York Rangers. Jonathan Quick and David Rittich draw the starts in goal. Los Angeles got the first goal in the first period with a Kevin Fiala goal, his eleventh of the season, passed from Trevor Moore. New York tied it in the second period with a Chris Kreider goal, his twenty-first of the year, fueled by Adam Fox and Mika Zibanejad. The Kings took the lead back with a Quinton Byfield goal, his thirteenth of the season, going in unassisted. This held for an eventual 2-1 win, with the three stars given to Rittich (22 for 23 in saves), Byfield, and Fiala.
